You have made me and remade me, And you have bestowed on me All the good things I possess, And still I do not know you. I have not yet done that For which I was made. Teach me to seek you, For I cannot seek you Unless you teach me, Or find you Unless you show yourself to me. Let me seek you in my desire, Let me desire you in my seeking. Let me find you by loving you, Let me love you when I find you.

Heroes & Believers of Faith
What makes someone a saint? The USCCB.org (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops) states: All Christians are called to be saints. Saints are persons in heaven (officially canonized or not), who lived vitreous lives in a heroic way or were martyred for the faith, and who are worthy of imitation. Heaven is filled with converted sinners of all kinds, and there is room for more. St. Joseph Cafasso
There are 3 steps in official church procedure for a candidate to obtain sainthood: Venerable Blessed Saint Venerable- the title given to a deceased person recognized formally by the pope as having lived a heroically virtuous life. Blessed-to be called blessed one miracle acquired through the candidate s intercession is required along with heroic virtue Saint-a second miracle after beatification is required before a candidate can be canonized a saint
A miracle is not required prior to a martyr s beatification but one is required before canonization. The pope may waive these requirements as Pope Francis did in 2016 when he waived the 5 year waiting period needed before starting the canonization process for Father Jacques Hamel. Father Hamel was slain by Islamic extremists while saying the mass in Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray, France. On September 14, 2016 Pope Francis said that He is a martyr and martyrs are beatified.
Before becoming Catholic I thought that saints were perfect. I thought that they lived perfect lives, never failed in their devotion to God, they always did the right thing, and never behaved badly. How else could you be a saint? It wasn t until RCIA that I discovered that many saints were not perfect, far from it in some cases. They actually had a lot of issues with anger, greed, promiscuity & insecurity. Every saint has a past and every sinner has a future. ~Oscar Wilde Saints are only sinners who keep trying ~Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta
Saint Mary of Egypt Ran away from home at early age and spent 17 years as a seductress Enjoyed the challenge of seducing men Went to Jerusalem with pilgrims intent on only seducing those aboard the ship While looking for victims at the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross was repeatedly repelled from entering the church Was struck with remorse for her sinful ways when she looked upon a statue of the Blessed Virgin. In deep faith and humility she asked for help from Mary to enter the church to venerate the sacred wood on which Jesus suffered and promised to renounce her sinful ways. After entering the church she prayed for further guidance; she heard a voice telling her to cross the Jordan and there she would find rest. She lived out her life as a hermit in the desert for 47 years

He reconciled with his wife and they both returned to the Catholic faith When trying to leave for the Continent so they could practice Catholicism freely they were stopped and Howard was imprisoned in the Tower of London He died there 10 years later his death warrant never signed by Queen Elizabeth I Canonized by Saint Pope Paul VI on October 25, 1970

What is Canonization? The process of declaring one a saint in the Catholic Church is called canonization. The canonization process is a canonical (Church law) procedure by which the Church through the Pope solemnly declares a Catholic to be united with God in heaven, an intercessory to God on behalf of the living, and worthy of public and universal veneration. - USSCB
Path to Canonization 1) Servant of God 2) Venerable 3) Blessed 4) Saint
Servant of God 5 year waiting period Bishop asks Vatican to open Cause for Canonization Official opening of the Cause = Servant of God
Venerable Investigation Documentation submitted to Vatican Examination Servant of God decreed as Venerable Decree of Martyrdom Decree of Heroic Virtue
Blessed A. Martyr a. Can immediately be declared Blessed B. Life of Heroic Virtue a. To be declared Blessed, there must be proof of one miracle (granted by God) through the intercession of the Venerable person b. Conditions of the miracle: Scientifically unexplainable i. Instantaneous ii. Permanent iii. Complete
Saint Declared a Saint if there is an additional, verified miracle Blessed (Martyr): Needs one miracle Blessed (Person of Heroic Virtue): Needs a second miracle in addition to the first miracle Ceremony of Canonization by the Pope
Why canonize? By canonizing some of the faithful, i.e., by solemnly proclaiming that they practiced heroic virtue and lived in fidelity to God's grace, the Church recognizes the power of the Spirit of holiness within her and sustains the hope of believers by proposing the saints to them as models and intercessors. The saints have always been the source and origin of renewal in the most difficult moments in the Church's history. - CCC, 828
