Explorers and settlers set up missions in the New World. Paul, the Apostle, had many churches built throughout the Roman Empire The Second Vatican Council dealt with many of the church s problems. Two popes fought for power. 1 Jesus Christ lived among his followers and spread the word of God Martin Luther began a reformation movement against the Catholic Church The Orthodox Church became the dominant religion in the east. The Church lost much of its land. Only the Vatican remained. T R U E O R F A L S E? Jesus Christ died on the cross. Resurrection is celebrated because the Virgin Mary rose to heaven. God sent Jesus Christ to Earth to save people from hell. Young priests receive holy orders. Before a Catholic marries they must be baptized. A priest often baptizes sick people before they die. At first Christians were persecuted in many areas of the Roman Empire. Priests are appointed by bishops. Muslims attacked European churches during the Crusades. During the 14th century cardinals elected two popes because Roman Catholicism spread very fast. Henry VIII broke away from Rome and founded the Anglican Church. During the 20th century the Pope became the most powerful leader in Europe. T F

The Roman Catholic church goes back almost two thousand years to the life of Jesus Christ and his. Today there are almost one members around the world. The church is led by the Pope, who rules from the Vatican. He selects and bishops who are responsible for their countries and dioceses. Roman Catholics believe in a God, who appears in three persons: the Father, the Son and the Holy. God sent his son, Jesus Christ to Earth as a. During his lifetime Jesus spent much time with his apostles, who continued his teachings after his. Catholics also believe in the Mary, mother of Jesus Christ. Catholics usually go to mass on Sunday. There they celebrate with a priest, who turns wine into blood and bread into Christ s body. During believers are allowed to eat a part of the body of Jesus. During mass they also say prayers and sing. Before a person becomes a Roman Catholic they are. A priest pours water over a person s and cleans them of their sin. In a a believer tells a priest what they have done wrong. Marriage is a in which a man and woman promise to live together, have children and bring them up in a Catholic way. Today s church is faced with many problems.
