2 The Eucharist Welcome to Ely Cathedral this morning. Everyone is very welcome for refreshments after the service near the main door to the Cathedral. Communicant members of all Christian denominations are welcome to receive Communion at this service. The ministry of healing is available this morning. If you would like prayer for yourself or someone else, please go to St Dunstan s Chapel, in the South Transept during the administration of Communion, where one of the clergy and a member of the Pastoral Team will be available to pray with you. There is an Induction Loop in both the North and South Transepts, the Choir and the Presbytery, for those using a hearing aid, and large copies of the service sheet are available on request. Photography or video recording are not permitted at this service. Please keep your mobile phones switched off throughout the service. GOSPEL Luke Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Jesus said to his disciples: There will be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars, and on the earth distress among nations confused by the roaring of the sea and the waves. People will faint from fear and foreboding of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. Now when these things begin to take place, stand up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near. Then he told them a parable: Look at the fig tree and all the trees; as soon as they sprout leaves you can see for yourselves and know that summer is already near. So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near. Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all things have taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. Be on guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life, and that day catch you unexpectedly, like a trap. For it will come upon all who live on the face of the whole earth. Be alert at all times, praying that you may have the strength to escape all these things that will take place, and to stand before the Son of Man. This is the Gospel of the Lord.

8 SERMON Please sit After the Sermon silence is kept THE NICENE CREED Please stand Let us confess our faith in God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. 8

The day is coming soon when you shall see God face to face. Remember the ways and the works of God. God calls you out of darkness to walk in the light of his coming. You are God s children. President In the tender mercy of our God, the dayspring from on high shall break upon us, to give light to those who dwell in darkness and in the shadow of death and to guide our feet into the way of peace. 11 The president takes the Bread and the Cup and praises God for his gifts As this bread was scattered and then gathered and made one, so may your Church be gathered into your kingdom. THE EUCHARISTIC PRAYER It is indeed right and good to give you thanks and praise, almighty God and everlasting Father, through Jesus Christ your Son. For when he humbled himself to come among us in human flesh, he fulfilled the plan you formed before the foundation of the world to open for us the way of salvation. Confident that your promise will be fulfilled, we now watch for the day when Christ our Lord will come again in glory. And so we join our voices with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven to proclaim your glory, for ever praising you and singing The choir sings 11

14 THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD The president breaks the consecrated bread, saying We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. THE GIVING OF COMMUNION The president invites the people to receive the Holy Communion, saying Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Blessed are those who are called to his supper. Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word, and I shall be healed. Communicant members of all Christian churches are welcome to receive Communion. All who are not communicants are invited to come forward for a blessing. If you wish to receive a blessing, please indicate this by bringing this service sheet with you. Gluten free wafers are available on request. A congregation member requires a lift to and from Littleport to the 10.30am Cathedral Eucharist. If you think you might be able to help them please send your contact details to the Chapter Office who will pass the information on. Without transport attendance is difficult. LITURGICAL CHANGES Many thanks to all who gave feedback on the changes to the services we have trialled in recent weeks. The beginning of the service will return to the pattern which existed before, with the choir at the West End processing in with the clergy and servers during the first hymn. At the end of the service we will continue current practice for the congregation to face west and sing the dismissal from the back of the Cathedral. 18

19 ELY CATHEDRAL ENVIRONMENT GROUP - Litter picking around Ely We plan to have litter picking sessions once a month, on the FIRST Saturday of the month, from 8.00 a.m. to 9.00 a.m. If you would be interested in joining us, please come to the South Door of the Cathedral at 8.00 a.m. on Saturday 5 January All equipment will be provided. We finish with coffee and cake in the Cathedral. We are rehearsing for the Community-Sing-along Service on 15 December. All are welcome. No auditions, no previous experience needed. Rehearsals take place from pm in the Song School on the following dates: 5 December and 11 December. JUNIOR CHURCH Children from Reception to Year 6. We would be pleased to welcome you to join us in exploring our faith through bible study, music, Godly Play, prayer and fun activities. Junior Church meet at 10.30am every Sunday during term time in Powcher s Hall. We rejoin the worship for Communion and have our seats at the front of the Octagon.
