THE GATHERING When the bell rings, please stand ADVENT PROSE Cantor All All All All All Drop down, ye heavens, from above, and let the skies pour down righteousness. Be not wroth very sore, O Lord, neither remember iniquity for ever: thy holy cities are a wilderness, Sion is a wilderness, Jerusalem a desolation: our holy and our beautiful house, where our fathers praise thee. Drop down, ye heavens, from above, and let the skies pour down righteousness. We have sinned, and are as an unclean thing, and we all do fade as a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away; thou hast hid thy face from us: and hast consumed us, because of our iniquities. Drop down, ye heavens, from above, and let the skies pour down righteousness. Ye are my witnesses, saith the Lord, and my servant whom I have chosen; that ye may know me and believe me: I, even I, am the Lord, and beside me there is no Saviour: and there is none that can deliver out of my hand. Drop down, ye heavens, from above, and let the skies pour down righteousness. Comfort ye, comfort ye, my people, my salvation shall not tarry: I have blotted out as a thick cloud thy transgressions: Fear not, for I will save thee: For I am the Lord thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Redeemer. Drop down, ye heavens, from above, and let the skies pour down righteousness. 3 Words: The Advent Prose Tune: Plainsong Mode I NEH 501
THE GREETING President In the name of the Father and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The Lord be with you and also with you. The president welcomes the people and introduces the liturgy PRAYERS OF PENITENCE Deacon When the Lord comes, he will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness, and will disclose the purposes of the heart. Therefore in the light of Christ let us confess our sins. 1 Corinthians 4.5 Please kneel Silence is kept Most merciful God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we confess that we have sinned in thought, word and deed. We have not loved you with our whole heart. We have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. In your mercy forgive what we have been, help us to amend what we are, and direct what we shall be; that we may do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with you, our God. Amen. KYRIE sung by the choir Kyrie eleison Christe eleison Kyrie eleison Lord, have mercy Christ, have mercy Lord, have mercy 4
President Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. COLLECT Let us pray. Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness and to put on the armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life, in which your Son Jesus Christ came to us in great humility; that on the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen A reading from the Book of Jeremiah. THE LITURGY OF THE WORD Please sit FIRST READING Jeremiah The days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will fulfil the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David; and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will live in safety. And this is the name by which it will be called: The LORD is our righteousness. For the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 5
HYMN Please stand 1 Hark the glad sound! the Saviour comes, The Saviour promised long! Let every heart prepare a throne, And every voice a song. 2 He comes the prisoners to release In Satan s bondage held; The gates of brass before him burst, The iron fetters yield. 3 He comes the broken heart to bind, The bleeding soul to cure, And with the treasures of his grace Enrich the humble poor. 4 Our glad hosannas, Prince of peace, Thy welcome shall proclaim, And heaven s eternal arches ring With thy beloved name. A reading from the first letter to the Thessalonians. Words: Philip Doddridge Music: Bristol NEH 6 From Thomas Ravenscroft s Psalmes 1621 SECOND READING Please sit 1 Thessalonians How can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy that we feel before our God because of you? Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you face to face and restore whatever is lacking in your faith. Now may our God and Father himself and our Lord Jesus direct our way to you. And may the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all, just as we abound in love for you. And may he so strengthen your hearts in holiness that you may be blameless before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints. For the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 6
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Please stand and face the deacon Choir All All Alleluia, Alleluia. Alleluia, Alleluia. Truly I tell you, says the Lord, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God. Alleluia, Alleluia. The Lord be with you. And also with you. GOSPEL Luke Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Jesus said to his disciples: There will be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars, and on the earth distress among nations confused by the roaring of the sea and the waves. People will faint from fear and foreboding of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. Now when these things begin to take place, stand up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near. Then he told them a parable: Look at the fig tree and all the trees; as soon as they sprout leaves you can see for yourselves and know that summer is already near. So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near. Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all things have taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. Be on guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life, and that day catch you unexpectedly, like a trap. For it will come upon all who live on the face of the whole earth. Be alert at all times, praying that you may have the strength to escape all these things that will take place, and to stand before the Son of Man. This is the Gospel of the Lord.
SERMON Please sit After the Sermon silence is kept THE NICENE CREED Please stand Let us confess our faith in God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. 8
THE INTERCESSION President In the power of the Spirit and in union with Christ let us pray to the Father. Please kneel These responses may be used Lord, in your mercy or Lord, hear us. hear our prayer. Lord, graciously hear us. Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen. And at the end LIGHTING OF ADVENT WREATH People of God: awake! The day is coming soon when you shall see God face to face. Remember the ways and the works of God. God calls you out of darkness to walk in the light of his coming. You are God s children. Lord, make us one as we walk with Christ Today and for ever. Amen. President In the tender mercy of our God, the dayspring from on high shall break upon us, to give light to those who dwell in darkness and in the shadow of death and to guide our feet into the way of peace. Please stand THE LITURGY OF THE SACRAMENT THE PEACE Luke 1.78, 79 9
The peace of the Lord be always with you and also with you. Let us offer one another a sign of peace. The peace is shared THE PREPARATION OF THE TABLE OFFERTORY HYMN The altar is prepared and bread and wine are placed upon it. During this hymn an offering is received. If you pay tax in the UK, please place your offering in the envelope, remembering to include the details requested on the front of the envelope. Thank you. 1 Hark! a herald voice is calling: Christ is nigh, it seems to say; Cast away the dreams of darkness, O ye children of the day! 3 Lo! the Lamb, so long expected, Comes with pardon down from heaven; Let us haste, with tears of sorrow, One and all to be forgiven; 2 Startled at the solemn warning, Let the earth-bound soul arise; Christ, her Sun, all sloth dispelling, Shines upon the morning skies. 5 Honour, glory, virtue, merit, To the Father and the Son, With the co-eternal Spirit While unending ages run. Amen. 4 So when next he comes in glory, And earth s final hour draws near, May he then as our defender On the clouds of heaven appear. Words: From the Latin Tr E. Caswell Music: Merton NEH 5 W. H. Monk The gifts of the congregation and Junior Church are received 10
The president takes the Bread and the Cup and praises God for his gifts As this bread was scattered and then gathered and made one, so may your Church be gathered into your kingdom. Glory to you, O God, for ever. Wisdom has built her a house; she has mixed her wine; she has set her table. Glory to you, O God, for ever. THE EUCHARISTIC PRAYER It is indeed right and good to give you thanks and praise, almighty God and everlasting Father, through Jesus Christ your Son. For when he humbled himself to come among us in human flesh, he fulfilled the plan you formed before the foundation of the world to open for us the way of salvation. Confident that your promise will be fulfilled, we now watch for the day when Christ our Lord will come again in glory. And so we join our voices with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven to proclaim your glory, for ever praising you and singing The choir sings 11
Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts Heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Glory be to Thee, O Lord most High. Amen. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord, Hosanna in the highest. Please sit or kneel Accept our praises, heavenly Father, through your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ, and as we follow his example and obey his command, grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit these gifts of bread and wine may be to us his body and his blood; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Therefore, heavenly Father, we remember his offering of himself made once for all upon the cross; we proclaim his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; we look for the coming of your kingdom, and with this bread and this cup we make the memorial of Christ your Son our Lord. Great is the mystery of faith 12
Accept through him, our great high priest, this our sacrifice of thanks and praise, and as we eat and drink these holy gifts in the presence of your divine majesty, renew us by your Spirit, inspire us with your love and unite us in the body of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Through him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, with all who stand before you in earth and heaven, we worship you, Father almighty, in songs of everlasting praise: President Awaiting his coming in glory, let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. THE LORD S PRAYER 13
THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD The president breaks the consecrated bread, saying We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread. AGNUS DEI O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, grant us thy peace. THE GIVING OF COMMUNION The president invites the people to receive the Holy Communion, saying Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Blessed are those who are called to his supper. Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word, and I shall be healed. Communicant members of all Christian churches are welcome to receive Communion. All who are not communicants are invited to come forward for a blessing. If you wish to receive a blessing, please indicate this by bringing this service sheet with you. Gluten free wafers are available on request. The body of Christ or The blood of Christ The communicant responds Amen, and then receives. During Communion the Choir will sing Agnus Dei from Missa Brevis (Walton) and the anthems Never weather-beaten sail (Richard Shephard) and E en so Lord Jesus, quickly come (Paul Manz). MINISTRY OF HEALING The ministry of healing is available this morning. If you would like prayer for yourself or someone else, please go to St Dunstan s Chapel, in the South Transept during the administration of Communion, where one of the clergy and a member of the Pastoral Team will be available to pray with you. 14
Never weather beaten sail MOTET Never weather beaten sail more willing bent to shore, Never tired pilgrim s limbs affected slumber more, Than my wearied sprite now longs to fly out of my troubled breast. O come quickly, sweetest Lord, and take my soul to rest. Ever blooming are the joys of Heaven s high Paradise, Cold age deafs not there our ears nor vapour dims our eyes. Glory there the sun outshines whose beams the blessed only see. O come quickly, glorious Lord, and raise my sprite to Thee! Words: Thomas Campion Music: Richard Shephard b E en so Lord Jesus, quickly come Peace be to you and grace from him, Who freed us from our sins, Who loved us all and shed his blood That we might saved be. Sing holy, holy to our Lord The Lord, Almighty God, Who was, and is, and is to come, Sing holy, holy Lord! Rejoice in heaven all ye that dwell therein, Rejoice on earth ye saints below, For Christ is coming soon! E en so, Lord Jesus, quickly come And might shall be no more; They need no light, nor lamp, nor sun, For Christ will be their all! Words: Ruth Manz from Revelation 22 Music: Paul Manz
PRAYERS AFTER COMMUNION Please stand Let us pray. O Lord our God, make us watchful and keep us faithful as we await the coming of your Son our Lord; that, when he shall appear, he may not find us sleeping in sin but active in his service and joyful in his praise; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Father of all, we give you thanks and praise, that when we were still far off you met us in your Son and brought us home. Dying and living, he declared your love, gave us grace, and opened the gate of glory. May we who share Christ s body live his risen life; we who drink his cup bring life to others; we whom the Spirit lights give light to the world. Keep us firm in the hope you have set before us, so we and all your children shall be free, and the whole earth live to praise your name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.
