The Scapular and the Rosary 2012 AND AHEAD Today, as I write, it is November, ! Some people predict terrible events to happen next month in December. Others believe at the end of December we will enter a very different age where human beings will be radically changed for the good. The good and the bad for me personally this year have been mixed together. I had a heart attack on January 1 st. Today, nearing the end of the year, I am confined to bed, most likely for the rest of my life. Yet I feel more deeply fulfilled from the year 2012 than at any other time I can remember. I finally was led to understand why the Scapular and the Rosary are of HUGE importance for our future. Originally, the brown Scapular was a full size work apron. The Scapular, as worn by most Catholics today, is made of two pieces of fabric about the size of postage stamps joined by a string. The string goes around the neck and the pieces of fabric hang in the front, one on each side. Wearing the Scapular is a devotion richly blessed. Years ago I had a strong desire to wear the brown Scapular work apron in its original full size. I tried to sew one but the results were a disaster. I have little skill at dressmaking. This year, after my heart attack, I hired a dressmaker to make a pattern and to sew a brown Scapular. I have come to truly believe that our Blessed Mother The Apostles Creed Prayers for the Rosary I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, was born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified; died, and was buried. He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from there He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen. The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name: Thy kingdom come: Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread: and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation: but deliver us from evil. Amen Hail Mary Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. Glory Be Prayer Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen Jesus Prayer (optional) O my Jesus, forgive us. Deliver us from the fire of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those who are most in need. 1 28
ABOUT THE ROSARY What Is the Rosary? The Rosary is a form of reflective prayer based on the mysteries of our redemption. Its purpose is to deepen our prayer lives and to lead us into a profound encounter with the central truths of the Christian faith. The Rosary is composed of four meditations focused on events in the life, death, and resurrection of Christ. These events are found in the Bible. The four meditations are: Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful, and Glorious. The Rosary includes teachings of the Church regarding Mary, the mother of Jesus, and events in her life, too. Isn t reciting so many prayers vain repetition? Even one insincere prayer can be in vain. Some things bear repeating. Pray without ceasing the apostle Paul instructs in I Thes. 5:17. The repetition dissolves into contemplation as one progresses along the spiritual journey. The quantity of prayer does not matter but the depth. Silence Since stillness helps to nourish contemplation of the mysteries, praying the Rosary in silence can bring many blessings. When prayed faithfully, the Rosary may grow more and more into a love song for God. A decade a day Ten beads are called a decade. Usually the time for at least a decade a day can be found. That is only a few minutes a day for God who has given us life and all that is good. Why beads? Beads make it possible to keep one s place and to keep centered. The heart of the Rosary is the circlet of 54 beads, ten Hail Marys times five, and four Our Father beads. The circle begins and ends with praises to the Holy Trinity with the Glory Be prayers. wants the Scapular to be promoted now in a new way, as well as in its present form. I see the Scapular in its present form which is small as a code from the past. A treasured code. I believe it is time now to activate the message in the code. I remember the first time I saw a picture of the Blessed Mother holding her Rosary in one hand and her Scapular in the other. She lovingly extended the Rosary and Scapular to us. The picture spoke directly to my heart. The caption beneath the picture startled me. It said, ONE DAY WITH MY ROSARY AND MY SCAPULAR I WILL SAVE THE WORLD. These were amazing words. They were uttered hundreds of years ago, it is said, by Saint Dominic in a prophecy concerning Blessed Mother Mary and what she would one day do. Here is the story: It is said that there is a church in Rome which has a chapel honoring the chance meeting of three men who were all later to be declared saints. The men were Dominic, Francis, and Angeles. Followers of each of these men were supposedly present. Friar Dominic was busy recruiting members for his new religious order. Brother Francis was especially beloved of the poor who followed him (as well as the birds and the animals). Brother Angeles had been invited to Rome from Mt. Carmel in Palestine because of his fame as a preacher. The Holy Spirit arranged the meeting, it is said, because each of the three men recognized each other. They made prophecies to each other. Some of the followers who were present recorded the prophecies which were spoken at that time. 27 2
St. Angeles foretold the stigmata of St. Francis. St. Dominic spoke to St. Angeles saying, One day, Brother Angeles, to your order of Carmel, the Most Blessed Virgin Mary will give a devotion to be known as the brown Scapular. And to my order of Preachers she will give a devotion to be known as the Rosary. AND ONE DAY, THROUGH THE ROSARY AND THE SCAPULAR, SHE WILL SAVE THE WORLD. The Rosary of the Great Coming Series My first reaction when I read these words was to think, But Jesus already saved the world. So how can this be? For months I wanted to understand the meaning of our Blessed Mother s words. When I felt called to promote the Scapular in addition to the Rosary, I changed the words Mother Mary spoke in the caption under her picture. Instead of, I will save the world, I would have her say, I will overcome the barriers to peace. Now I realize how wrong it is to change the Blessed Mother s words. Now I know there is a difference between how Mother Mary will save the world and how Jesus saved us. Booklet 1 Booklet 2 Booklet 3 Booklet 4 Booklet 5 The Rosary of the Great Coming Oneness Fatima Heavenly Beings 2012 and Ahead Jesus saved us on the Cross of Salvation. He sacrificed himself for our sakes out of infinite love. Jesus saved us by freeing us from sin that we might have eternal life. Christ Jesus, the Divine Son of God, redeemed us. Jesus saved souls. Jesus will continue to save souls. Booklets are available from Quick Solutions, Blessed Mary s promise is to save the world, a role greatly blessed by God. If the world is what Mother Mary will save, what will she save the world from? From destruction. 3 20
Design of the Scapular for Women (for cool weather) Square neck, small opening, not too low cut, yet wide enough to pull on over the head. Seam down the middle of the front and back. Side seams from under the arms part way down the side. Straight cut with slight flare or fullness if needed. A side slit opens from the hem of the Scapular to about half way up the thigh. The side opening permits freedom of movement for work (side slits on both sides). Length to just below the knee, or longer. The Scapular itself is sleeveless. A shirt or blouse should be worn under the Scapular (short sleeved or long sleeved). Sleeve openings are large enough to permit a jacket to be worn comfortably underneath the Scapular. A skirt or pants should be worn underneath the Scapular. Length of skirt or pants should be at least to below the length of the Scapular for modesty. Design of the Scapular for Women (for warm weather) To get the full meaning of these words save the world as promised by the Blessed Virgin, we need to reflect on the three saints who, it is said, met on the street corner in Rome in the year One of them did not speak. It seemed significant to me that it was St. Francis who did not speak. St. Francis of Assisi is the saint we think of first when we think of our earth and its life forms. I believe St. Francis was there at the meeting of the three saints to represent our beautiful planet with all its living creatures. He represented our world that the Blessed Mother will save. Mother Mary is Queen of Earth. If the earth is headed toward the great Tribulation, as foretold by Jesus, although we cannot know the exact day or hour, we need to pray, as Jesus advised. And the prayer we need is especially the Rosary. Now is the time for our Rosary prayers to join one another in the prayer of one world praying. Now also, I believe, is the time for us to join together in wearing the full size Scapular which is a brown work apron. Prayer and work. The Rosary and the Scapular. The design of a Scapular for warm weather would need the arm holes to be more closely fitted since no blouse would be necessary. A skirt or pants should be worn with length to at least below the length of the Scapular for modesty. Light weight fabric would be suitable. 19 4
The Blessed Mother is extending her arms to the whole world. Not just to Christians. We are all her children. The Rosary and the Scapular have a worldwide purpose. Because we can all see and touch the beads of the Rosary and the cloth of the Scapular, they will help draw others to us for the work ahead. The word work means physical or mental activity in order to achieve a purpose or result. The Rosary and the Scapular will be the means of achieving a world saved from self destructing. But who or what will unite all people of good will, Christian and non Christian alike, for the work to be accomplished? Design of Scapular for Men, Women, and Children Our Granddaughter showing the brown scapular work apron. The answer is the right Spirit. We who are Christian would say the Holy Spirit. The Spirit of God cannot be seen or touched by eyes or fingers, yet is very real. I am reminded of a story I heard years ago. I can t recall the details, but it starts out with the all too familiar situation where people in a group can t agree. In this case a meeting of high level importance had broken down in a deadlock. Despite hours of discussions, no agreement had been reached. The mood of the members had grown increasingly antagonistic. At that point one person stood up and risked being thought a fool by asking for ten minutes of shared silence. After the silence, the atmosphere in the room was entirely different. When negotiations began again, a new spirit of empathy and cooperation made it possible to quickly come to agreement. Sketches in pencil by Ken Charon 5 18
Design of the Scapular I showed the dressmaker a picture of a Carmelite nun wearing a Scapular when I first met with her. Together, we worked out a pattern for a modern day Scapular. At the time I was still recovering from the heart attack. Before the last fitting, I became confined to bed. Our granddaughter replaced me for the final fitting. I never wanted to wear the Scapular in my grave, as one friend suggested. The brown work apron of the Blessed Mother is for the living for all willing workers of good will, praying and working together for peace. Our granddaughter brought the finished Scapular to me. She modeled the Scapular in a photo after I first held it close to my heart. Then she wrapped the precious garment carefully for mailing. The Scapular no longer mine is now in Fatima, Portugal, at the World Apostolate of Fatima headquarters accompanied by my writings on its significance. We must trust that the right Spirit will descend on all those who come together in good will for peace. We must trust in the Holy Spirit to unite us in heart. Over a year ago in 2011, I was busy planning a project which featured prayer beads of the world s religions. Students in a Catholic school were to paint a 4 ft. x 8 ft. mural. Although the school is Catholic, the student body is diverse in religious makeup. I wrote my sister a letter describing the proposal that I submitted to the school. It seems relevant to our Blessed Mother s promise to save the world, and to the role of the Holy Spirit in harmonizing our minds and hearts. My sister loved the idea of the mural. My letter to her (in summary) follows. It makes me happy to think of peacemakers all around the world wearing Blessed Mother Mary s Scapular in a new way so they can recognize each other and link up. 17 6

The Blessed Mother will prepare us for the coming difficult days of the Tribulation. Through her Rosary and her Scapular, she will be with us, sustaining us with her love during the Tribulation. And afterwards, through her Rosary and her Scapular, she will welcome us into the Millennium, the thousand years of peace on earth. A Letter to Lori I wonder if you will like the enclosed picture. I m eager to tell you the story of how Garden of Hope came to be drawn and painted. I have lifted parts of what follows from some of my other writings, so those sections may seem rather formal in tone. I am anxious for your feedback as a Protestant. Do you see the little girl in the foreground who is receiving a Rosary before joining the circle? She is the one who inspired the picture for me. She is Jacinta, now named Blessed by the Church. I think of Jacinta when I recall the scripture,...and a little child shall lead them. (Isaiah 11:6) Jacinta died in 1920 following the flu epidemic at the age of 9. Her dedication to praying the Rosary for world peace, despite suffering greatly from complications of the flu, are an inspiration to Christians and non Christians alike still today. Jacinta was the youngest of three shepherd children who had apparitions, first of an angel in 1916, and then of the Blessed Mother of Jesus in The apparitions took place in Fatima, Portugal. Back to the picture. Several months ago, in my mind, I began to see a circle of light coming down from heaven. In the circle were children from all over the world, diverse in race and culture. Some parents were there, too. The spirit of the gathering uplifted me because it was filled with peace and harmony. The scene was set in a garden. An angelic being of light watched over the gathering. 15 8
Many of the children and their parents held beads. Off in the distance I saw a city on fire. Out of the smoke and flames, a man with a large sword came riding a red horse. In the spring of 2011, I commissioned just such a picture. I met weekly with the artist, Ken Charon, over a period of several weeks before the final black and white drawing was brought to completion. An art teacher from the school was involved with us, too, during those weeks, because the drawing was intended for an art project a mural to be painted by the school children. The following is the preface to the proposal for the art project that we presented to the school, and since you are a teacher, I especially value what you may have to say about this introduction. I knew the drawing was complete when the artist drew a white dove in the picture. A dove.....symbol of both peace and the Holy Spirit. We can not have peace without the Holy Spirit acting in our lives. It is a given. In the proposal for the school art project, I wrote A Note for the Teachers. I emphasized that each child pictured in the mural was doing what is appropriate for the belief system in which the child was being raised. One little boy is reading a book, you may notice. I stressed that since not every pathway of faith or belief system teaches prayer as part of its practice, some children in the circle are not praying. (They may meditate, or reflect, or follow some other tradition.) For that reason, I suggested it was best to describe the activity of the children as coming together for peace rather than as praying together. In the West, we usually describe beads which are set aside for spiritual practice as prayer beads. I think eventually a more universal term will come into use for the strings of beads used in the various traditions around the world. The children painted the mural during the weeks of Lent Upper grade level students added the final details. Almost every student in the elementary, junior, and high school contributed to the finished work. Under Mother Mary s guidance, a mighty joining together to Save the World will escalate. I foresee an increasing number of projects to unite us all in a global Garden of Hope. 9 14
the unofficial minister for the group and led them in prayer. He was a man of faith, hope, and love. I want to give that gift of serenity to our children, I told everyone. I want them to be grounded in faith so that they can be set free from fear. (We kept the war image.) At first I planned to name the picture Gethsemane of Hope. (In fact, for me, that will always be the subtitle of the picture!) We substituted the word Garden because it is easier for the children to understand and pronounce, and because it is more universal. Even though the name was changed, because the artist had learned it was the name of the garden where Jesus prayed the night before the Crucifixion, he drew olive trees in the garden. As you no doubt know, there are very ancient olive trees in the garden of Gethsemane which, according to some experts, is located at the foot of the Mt. of Olives in Jerusalem. PREFACE (for the school art project) Our children brighten the world. They will take us into the future. What we teach our children will be critical for the kind of a world they establish. Will it be light filled with peace, or barren from the devastating weapons of war? We must, of course, defend our country. Yet more and more, our defenses need to be based on our relationships with others. The Mural, Garden of Hope, shows children of different religious traditions, or of no particular religion, gathering in a circle, for one purpose. To focus on world peace. They hold a single over arching goal in common a peaceable life on earth. Parents are there, too, in the garden, supporting the children. A beautiful glow fills the circle. Except for soft murmurs of devotions, silence descends. Like a gentle, whispering wind, longings for harmony among all peoples rise up. Because the children are from a variety of faith traditions, they represent the spiritual aspirations of our planet. Each child present has been taught to respect the rights of others for freedom of belief in his or her religion. Each child is growing in understanding of his or her own pathway of belief. The circle symbolizes time and space set side for prayer, reflection, meditation, or contemplation as is appropriate for each person s beliefs. What unites the circle is good will and an earnest spirit seeking peace on earth
It has been noted many times that there will never be peace on earth until there is peace among the religions (and within each religion). In our discussions about the mural project, the school art teacher and the artist at first opposed the war image in the drawing. I questioned my own sense that the war image was important for the picture as a whole. I asked our pastor, who had advised me from the beginning, and who saw the preliminary sketches, Is it right or wrong to include the horse, rider, and sword? It belongs in the picture, our pastor replied. Yes, it is right to keep it. Still, I worried and felt strong pressure to remove the war image. I decided maybe I simply had no choice but to leave it out of the picture. That night I suffered a terrible nightmare. I woke up the next morning with a realization that I must not go against what I truly believed was right for the message of the picture. I explained to all involved why it seemed important to include the horse, rider, and sword. I told everyone, Our children today watch scenes of violence and war almost daily in the news. Many children and their parents, too, live in fear. They want to escape to a safe place where there is security. But where on the earth is such a place? It doesn t exist. The only safe place is in the circle of God s light and love in prayer. Our children need to know the true source of peace of soul and security through all the dark days of life. I spoke of what happened to the 33 miners in Chili who were trapped in the mine for so many long days. After their rescue, all of them suffered from post traumatic stress syndrome. All of them except for one. This man acted as 11 12
