2 FROM FATHER S DESK Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, Last month we hosted the annual conference of our Diocese which saw Bishop Alexander ordain Deacon Esteban Vázquez to the Holy Presbyterate. As we continue to celebrate the centenary of our parish of St. Nicholas, some words that Bishop Alexander spoke at the conclusion of the Liturgy on July 26 struck me as important for us as a parish and as a Diocese. Bishop Alexander said We have three recently ordained of this Diocese, Fr. Esteban, Fr. Gabriel Bilas, Deacon Mikel Hill These are all the sons of our heart, all the sons of our Diocese, all our hope. And we are keeping them, so far as God enables us. So this, I think, as much as anything I can imagine offhand is evidence of that little grain of vitality which is still in this Diocese, small as it is This life, this kernel which has budded in these three young lives. I think the matter of how many enter the service of the Church from a given parish or community is, maybe, evidence number one of the vitality of that parish, that community. We have these three who are our comfort and our joy God bless them, God prosper them, God give them every good thing. In its one hundred year history, our parish has given sons to the service of the Church, from + Fr. Paul Kleinschrodt to Fr. John Baker to Fr. Esteban Vázquez and from +Archdeacon Taras Kononchuk to Deacon Kerry Luke Gonser. This parish has supported vocations also, both by prayer and financially. There are parishes that in their one hundred years s history have produced no vocations. The vocations from our parish are evidence of that little grain of vitality which is still in this (parish). God grant that we as a parish family remain open to our children, sons and daughters, entering the monastic life and sons entering the holy diaconate and priesthood. Let us pray for our vocations and continue our prayers that the kernel of God s call will bud forth in future generations in our parish and with our giving let us support them materially so that future deacons, priests, monks and nuns can continue to shine with Christ s light in the world. 3 MOLEBEN TO THE THEOTOKOS The fast for the Dormition of the Theotokos begins on August 1. As part of our preparation for the Dormition of the Theotokos, we will celebrate the Moleben to the Theotokos on Sunday, July 31; Sunday, August 7 and Sunday, August 14 at the Shrine following Liturgy. Our Shrine is dedicated to the Icon of the Mother of God of Iveron which is venerated on Mount Athos. We will offer up petition to the Theotokos, praying for the health of the sick. Please join us in celebration and prayerful petition at these services to the Mother of God. ST. CATHERINE S NEWS As a reminder St. Catherine s Women s League meets on the first Sunday of each month during coffee hour. Next meeting date: There will be a dinner meeting in August. Time and location to be announced. The parish council will meet on August, 9 at 6:45 pm. If you are unable to attend this meeting please call the parish office. The Orthodox Book Club will not meet until Monday, September 19 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at St. George. This year the date will be Sunday, August 21. The Divine Liturgy will begin with the procession with the icon of our Lady of Iveron at 9:45 am. Comfortable chairs will be available for the Divine Liturgy. Family Picnic to follow. 5 MEMORY ETERNAL +Lydia Keeler, wife of the late +Alfred Keeler, sister of the late +Maria Sztaba, fell asleep in the Lord on Saturday, July 9 at home. Viewing and Parastas were held at Swartz Funeral Home on Tuesday, July 12. Funeral services were held in church on Wednesday, July 13. Interment services were held at Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly, MI on Thursday, July 14. May God grant his servant +Lydia a blessed repose and rest among the saints.
