2 The Interregnum: It Is Over! Be careful what you wish for. I m sure the better read among you will be able to tell me who wrote that first. Anyway, in April 2017 when Peter Robinson, our former vicar, approached me and asked me to stand for the post of churchwarden, I warned him that the last time I became churchwarden, within months the vicar had left, and we were in an interregnum. That would never happen again; would it? Well, one Sunday morning in November of the same year I was stood in my elder son s bathroom in his house near Stirling brushing my teeth. Tracey, my wife, entered and handed me my mobile phone. It s Peter Robinson, she said. He needs to speak to you. In these situations, when someone calls unexpectedly, a whole series of doom scenarios cross your mind with remarkable speed. The church has burnt down. We ve poisoned half the population of Malton because of a rogue container of coffee at Saturday s Coffee Stop. Someone s put the wrong refuse bin out for emptying. No. It was none of these. Peter advised that he was to announce at that day s services that he intended to retire at the end of April So, there you have it; a clear correlation between my being churchwarden and the departure of the vicar, albeit based on a sample size of only two! Reason enough, if any were needed, that I should not serve the office of churchwarden for a third time! The time between one vicar leaving and the new one arriving is termed the interregnum. Even the mention of the word fills many churchwardens with dread since, in the absence of a vicar, many of his responsibilities default to the churchwardens to sort out. However, we knew that in the benefice we had an excellent team around us who would help and support with most things through the period. In addition, we had Glyn, our curate, on whom we could dump everything else! Then, of course, there is the process of appointing a successor to the departed vicar. This involves the production of, in our case, a Benefice Profile which describes the parishes and what we are looking for in a new vicar. It also involves the completion of several legal processes requiring extra PCC meetings and the filling-in of forms. Then, of course, there is the interview day itself. I m sure I speak for all my warden colleagues at both St. Michael s and St. Mary s in sincerely thanking everyone for their help and prayers during the interregnum. The process is nearly complete, with the licencing of Glyn scheduled for 28 November watch out for details later. Yes, Glyn has accepted the job; despite our dumping on him during the interregnum. My only hope as we go forward is that he doesn t have to ask me to become churchwarden for the third time, and if he does, that my son moves further into Scotland where mobile phone reception is non-existent! To paraphrase another literary giant: To lose two vicars may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose three looks like carelessness. Regards, Alan Young, Churchwarden, St. Michael s.

4 St Michael s News From the Registers: - Baptism 21st October William Henry Reeves November Music report Sarah led an excellent Open Rehearsal on October 18 th. All who came enjoyed the evening but we were a little bit disappointed that so few other members of the congregation didn t take the opportunity to come along and sing some favourite hymns and songs. Rehearsals for the Carol Service will start on November 1 st at 8.15pm following the regular choir practice. Extra singers are always welcome, but please let one of us know if you d like to come. 6 Brass Cleaning and Yew Tree Trimming Grateful thanks to Terry Brockless & Owen Weatherill for taking down and putting back the chandeliers in Church and for trimming the Yew trees at the front gates, the trees look magnificent after their haircut. Thank you also to all the ladies and gentleman who cleaned all the brass and the chandeliers in church on the 25th September, the brass now shines in the autumn sunlight. Harvest Thank you to everyone who gave the gifts of flowers, fruit and vegetable and to everyone who helped decorate the Church for Harvest. I would like to thank everyone who gave gifts of tins etc for the Foodbank a total of 61.2kg was delivered by me to the Foodbank It was a fantastic amount. A big thank you to the ladies of the fellowship who once again provided the Harvest Supper after the service and to those who served food, made the refreshments and washed up afterwards. Thank you to Keith, John & Steve for setting out the tables and chairs and returning them to their home. I think everyone enjoyed the Service, the supper afterwards and Judy s sermon It has been some time since I heard laughter in church during the sermon. As arranged with ladies fellowship all the Harvest gifts of fruit and vegetables were split between and delivered by me to Derwent Lodge and Next Steps. 7 The Hymns we Sing part 2 By Janet Patten Last month, I outlined the list of resources which we use when choosing the hymns for the Parish Communion. This month I will explain how we go about choosing for each Sunday. Towards the middle of the month I sit down at my desk, with my bible and other resources around me, and a blank sheet of paper in front of me. I divide the paper into quarters, one for each Sunday of the following month. Now I am ready to begin choosing the hymns. The first list is a rough draft where I list all the suitable hymns or songs for each week. The Eucharist can be seen as having four parts: Gathering, Liturgy of the Word, Liturgy of the Sacrament, and Dismissal. Each part includes an opportunity for a hymn or song to be sung. The first hymn needs to be a good Gathering hymn, well known and not too long, to bring everyone together. A good hymn of praise gives us confidence in our faith before the confession, and the singing of the Gloria after it, affirms our assurance of God s love for us. The second hymn comes during the Liturgy of the Word (before the Gospel), so should have a bearing on what is being read. This hymn needs to be quite short and devotional in order not to upset the flow of the readings. I have to be careful not to choose a hymn just because the text fits the readings or the gospel - the mood and feel have to be right as well as the text. The third hymn comes at the Offertory, just after we share the Peace, at the beginning of the Liturgy of the Sacrament. I like to choose a hymn here with words of dedication or offering of ourselves, and sufficiently long enough to cover the time taken for the presentation of the gifts. If a suitable hymn is too short, I can always play an extra verse quietly after the singing has finished. The final hymn comes after the blessing and before the dismissal. We have been assured of God s love and care during the Eucharist and we are being sent out into His world with confidence. The final hymn needs to reflect this and send us out with joy. We try to choose a hymn of praise with a good tune that will stay in people s minds as they leave the church. Having considered all these aspects, we can then make a final choice for each week from the draft list. There is usually a gap of a few days between the draft list and the final choice, allowing the ideas to develop. Next month, I will write about the music chosen for the choir to sing during the administration of Communion.

9 OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD SHOE BOXES AND LEAFLETS IN CHURCH FROM SUNDAY 07 OCTOBER A project of Samaritan's Purse - its Mission 'to demonstrate God's love in a tangible way to needy children around the world. In 2017 Operation Christmas Child delivered more than 11 million gift-filled shoeboxes to needy children worldwide, of which 678,000 of these were sent from the UK. This year, the suggested donation per shoe box is 5 to cover costs which now includes an amount for training local churches to run a course for children who are old enough to read, and who live in communities where the local culture allows it. Not everyone will wish to pay the higher amount and it is left to the individual to decide how much they will contribute, but anything from 3 to 5 is fine. Tip from Roz Dyson (area organiser). Don't fill your shoe box to the top. (a) it is less expensive and (b) it prevents the contents spilling out when they are being stacked for dispatch. All you need to do to take part is:- 1. Collect and cover a shoe box (either from Church or from any of the shoe shops in Malton who are very willing to donate them). We may even have some boxes already covered! 2. Collect a leaflet from the back of Church 3. Decide whether your gift is for a boy or girl (Age Range 2-4 / 5-9 / 10-14) 4. Fill your box with gifts using the gift ideas list contained in the leaflet 5. Include a donation of between 3 and 5 per box to cover costs. Boxes will be received in church at the 9.30 am service on Sunday 18 November. Once again, in anticipation of your ever generous response - many thanks. Anne Bell
