Page 2 Epistle Reading: Ephesians 4:1-7 THE THEOTOKIAN Brethren, I, a prisoner for the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all lowliness and meekness, with patience, forbearing one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of us all, who is above all and through all and in all. But grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ s gift. Gospel Reading: Saint Luke 8:41-56 Let us attend, At that time, there came to Jesus a man named Jairus, who was a ruler of the Synagogue; and falling at Jesus feet he besought him to come to his house, for he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying. As he went, the people pressed round him. And a woman who had had a flow of blood for twelve years and had spent all her living upon physicians and could not be healed by anyone, came up behind him, and touched the fringe of his garment; and immediately her flow of blood ceased. And Jesus said, Who was it that touched me? When all denied it, Peter and those who were with him said, Master, the multitudes surround you and press upon you! But Jesus said, Some one touched me; for I perceive that power has gone forth from me. And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before him declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been immediately healed And he said to her, Daughter, your faith has made you well go in peace. While he was still speaking, a man from the ruler s house came and said, Your daughter is dead, do not trouble the Teacher any more. But Jesus on hearing this answered him, Do not fear; only believe, and she shall be well. And when he came to the house, he permitted no one to enter with him, except Peter and John and James, and the father and mother of the child. And all were weeping and bewailing her; but he said, Do not weep, for she is not dead but sleeping. And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. But taking her by the hand he called saying, Child, arise. And her spirit returned, and she got up at once; and he directed that something should be given her to eat. And her parents were amazed; but he charged them to tell no one what had happened. 2
THE THEOTOKIAN Page 3 By Stanley S. Harakas IMMACULATE CONCEPTION Q: How does the Orthodox Church s view on the Virgin Mary s birth differ from that of the Roman Catholics? A: The Orthodox retain the ancient traditions of the Church on this matter which hold that though Mary was chosen to be the Mother of our Lord because of her holiness, purity and goodness, she was born just as all othe human beings were, in need of redemption and salvation, that is, in the condition of original sin. Tradition holds that Joachim and Anna her parents were without a child and that God answered their prayers for a child in their old age. This was the common view in the early undivided Church as we know from numerous sermons of the Church Fathers. About the 7th century the feast of the Conception of the Theotokos began to be celebrated and certain rhetorical statement by some writers and preachers arose in the Western part of the Church. Some claimed that the Virgin Mary was born without original sin. When this idea was introduced in France in the 12th century, the great figures of Western Theology opposed it (St. Bernard, St. Bonaventure, St. Thomas Aquinas). Among those who supported the teaching were the Franciscan Monks, the Carmelites and later, the Jesuits. In 1493 it was affirmed as a pios opinion in the Council of Basle of the Western Church. Soon it became a required belief. It was made a part of the meaning of the Feast of the Conception as a Feast of Obligation in The belief was mad a dogma by Pope Pious 9th in 1854., which means that for Roman Catholics it is a required article of Faith. Orthodox theologians and Orthodox Church Councils subsequently rejected this teaching as one which is not in harmony with the ancient traditions of the Church nor its doctrines. Known as the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception, it is one of the major differences separating Orthodoxy and Roman Catholicism. 3
Page 4 THE THEOTOKIAN THE JOY OF REPENTANCE Now the tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to him, to hear him. And the Pharisees and the scribes grumbled, saying, This man receives sinners and eats with them. So he told them this parable: What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one which is lost, until he finds it? And wen he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and this neighbors, saying to them, Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost. Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance. (Lk 15: 1-7) Indeed the self-righteousness of the Pharisees and scribes is no fun at all. They just grumble in their same old way all the time, finding fault with every little and big thing the Lord does. But the tax collectors and sinners draw near to him, with their ears, eyes, and hearts wide open to joyous, humble fellowship with the God-Man. And their openness to receiving Him, to receiving His light and truth, opens their lives to change; to the adventure of repentance, (or meta-noia, which means change of mind or change of focus ). THE JOY OF REPENTANCE Let me be teachable today, that I may be open to the change(s) God wants for me. Let me draw near to Him, not as one who has it all figured out, but as one lost, and in need of being carried home, on the shoulders of One much stronger than me. Let me stop wandering about in circles, in my own head, and hand myself over to Him today. Blessed ar You, O Lord, teach me Your statues! 4

JOHNSTOWN, PA [Diocesan Chancery] -- In an Archpastoral Letter released today, November 1, 2018, His Eminence, Metropolitan Gregory has enthusiastically endorsed a new initiative of the National American Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Youth Organization, its inaugaral Annual Stewardship Drive, to benefit charitable activities both within and outside of the Diocese. He has called upon all parishes of the Diocese to support this philanthropic endeavor of the National ACRY during the season of the Nativity Fast (Advent) which will soon begin. The full text of His Eminence's letter is as follows: Protocol No. 16/2018 November 1, 2018 Glory Be To Jesus Christ! Dear Reverend Fathers and Faithful, As you are aware, throughout the history of our God-Protected Diocese, the National ACRY (American Carpatho-Russian Youth) Organization has been at the forefront of the youth and philanthropic initiatives of the Diocese. Throughout the years a tremendous amount of financial support has been offered to our youth in the form of collegiate and seminary scholarships, missionary trips, and projects through the IOCC (International Orthodox Christian Charities) and OCF (Orthodox Christian Fellowship). Our Diocesan Mission Fund has also received more than $250,000 over the years. Additionally, 9
Camp Nazareth and Diocesan youth in need have benefited from the Bishop John Camperships and annual support sponsored by the ACRY. Numerous educational pamphlets and books for the benefit of all of our Diocesan faithful have been made possible through the generosity of the ACRY. Presently, the ACRY produces our Diocesan Yearbook /ACRY Annual in partnership with the Diocesan Chancery. I am proud of the steps the ACRY has taken in recent years to streamline its operating procedures. In addition to providing financial support, the ACRY has also placed an emphasis on providing hands-on opportunities for direct charitable and missionary work. Last year, through their leadership over $50, in donations were collected. In addition, 1486 health kits and 411 clean-up buckets were assembled by the faithful of our parishes and sent to IOCC for their hurricane relief efforts in Texas, Florida, and the Caribbean. [MOU2] Additionally, at this year s ACRY Convention, $2,109 was raised and donated to the UNIDOS disaster relief and recovery program for the ongoing relief work in Puerto Rico. As the Supreme Patron of the ACRY and your Diocesan Hierarch, I am calling upon your parish s support of the first annual ACRY stewardship campaign. Beginning this Advent Season (that starts November 15 th /28 th ), the ACRY will be seeking a single contribution from its chapter members, as well as the parishes and individuals of the Diocese. Your support will help them to continue and expand the many outreach projects and philanthropic works completed in the name of our Diocese. Please see the attached promotional materials for all necessary details and deadlines. As stewardship also includes the offering of one s time and talents, I urge parishes that do not have an active ACRY Chapter to consider starting or reactivating a chapter. Working in His Vineyard with much love, +Metropolitan Gregory of Nyssa 10
Memory Eternal +Protodeacon Dennis and +Matushka Helen Lucak It is with heavy heart that I have been notified of the falling asleep in the Lord of Protodeacon Dennis and Matushka Helen Lucak last Sunday, November 11, Both Protodeacon Dennis and Matushka Helen were longtime members of Archangel Michael Orthodox Church in Broadview Height, OH and where Proto - deacon Dennis served for over 20 years. Archangel Michael Church is also the home of our life long parishioner Susan Benyo Rigby, her husband David and their family. The Lucak s were the victims of a shooting in their home and a person of interest has been taken into custody but as of the time of this writing no charges have been filed. On behalf of our parish family we extend our deepest condolences to Archangel Michael s pastor, Archpriest John Memorich, the Archangel Michael parish family, to the Rigby family/benyo family and to the Lucak family and that our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ give them strength during this very difficult time. O God, grant to your servants Protodeacon Dennis and Matushka Helen rest where the righteous and just repose where there is no sorrow, suffering or pain but life everlasting. May their memory be eternal! In Christ, Father Dan Lord our God, who does not praise the fearful powers and host of heaven, Your archangels? For the sake of Your beloved servants they always keep those worthy of themselves in unchanging good. Rightly they ar epraised, for they are mighty and powerful as they worship You, Master of all Creation. Without ceasing they hymn You with a threefold voice to proclaim clearly the consubstantial radiance of the one Godhead as they lead in life the souls of those who reverently praise the fearful and glorious Mystery of the Trinity beyond our understanding. Through their prayers make all who celebrate their feast blessed, for You are God blessed and most glorious, and to You due glory, together with Your only Son and Your lifecreating Spirit, now and ever and forever. Amvon Prayer for the Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel and all the Heavenly Angels 11
