W The Twenty-sixth Sunday after Pentecost November 18, 2018 The Holy Eucharist 9:00 a.m. ELCOME to Christ Church, Georgetown. We are grateful for your presence this morning. We hope you will return to Christ Church and worship with us again soon. For detailed information about the mission, ministry, work, and witness of the parish, including the complete schedule of Sunday and weekday services, visit our website: We extend a particular welcome to the children and youth among us, all of whom are encouraged to fully and actively participate in the liturgy. Children are also invited to peruse the worship resources at the back of the church. Optional nursery care for children three years of age and younger is available in the Parish Hall at 3116 O Street, NW. Please remember to silence all mobile phones and other electronic devices. Personal listening systems for the hearing impaired are available. Please speak with an usher. T HE ENTRANCE RITE The service follows the order for Holy Eucharist: Rite Two, which begins on page 355 in The Book of Common Prayer. The musical setting of the ordinary of the Eucharist is by Robert J. Powell (b. 1932). ORGAN VOLUNTARY: The Peace may be exchanged. from Rubrics Dan Locklair (b. 1949) THE OPENING ACCLAMATION All stand as the clergy, choristers, and assisting ministers enter. Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen. The says THE COLLECT FOR PURITY LMIGHTY God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse A the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

All join in singing GLORIA IN EXCELSIS THE SALUTATION AND COLLECT OF THE DAY The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. LESSED Lord, who caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: Grant us so to hear them, B read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD All sit for THE LESSON: Hebrews 10:11-25 E VERY priest stands day after day at his service, offering again and again the same sacrifices that can never take away sins. But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, and since then has been waiting until his enemies would be made a footstool for his feet. For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are sanctified. And the Holy Spirit also testifies to us, for after saying, This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds, he also adds, I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more. Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin. Therefore, my friends, since we have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain (that is, through his flesh), and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us approach with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful. And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching. Lector The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. The choristers sing PSALM 16 Conserva me, Domine Chant: A. Herbert Brewer ( ) 1 Protect me, O God, for I take refuge in you; * I have said to the LORD, You are my Lord, my good above all other. 2 All my delight is upon the godly that are in the land, * upon those who are noble among the people. 3 But those who run after other gods * shall have their troubles multiplied. 4 Their libations of blood I will not offer, * nor take the names of their gods upon my lips. 5 O LORD, you are my portion and my cup; * it is you who uphold my lot. 6 My boundaries enclose a pleasant land; * indeed, I have a goodly heritage. 7 I will bless the LORD who gives me counsel; * my heart teaches me, night after night. 8 I have set the LORD always before me; * because he is at my right hand I shall not fall. 9 My heart, therefore, is glad, and my spirit rejoices; * my body also shall rest in hope. 10 For you will not abandon me to the grave, * nor let your holy one see the Pit. 11 You will show me the path of life; * in your presence there is fullness of joy, and in your right hand are pleasures for evermore.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit: As it was in the beginning, is now, * and will be for ever. Amen. All stand and join in singing the hymn. Stanzas 1 and 2 precede the reading of the Holy Gospel; stanza 3 follows. HYMN AT THE GOSPEL PROCESSION 686: Come, thou fount of every blessing Nettleton THE HOLY GOSPEL: Mark 13:1-8 Gospeler The Holy Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to Saint Mark. Glory to you, Lord Christ. S Jesus came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, Look, Teacher, what large stones and A what large buildings! Then Jesus asked him, Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left here upon another; all will be thrown down. When he was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him privately, Tell us, when will this be, and what will be the sign that all these things are about to be accomplished? Then Jesus began to say to them, Beware that no one leads you astray. Many will come in my name and say, I am he! and they will lead many astray. When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed; this must take place, but the end is still to come. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. This is but the beginning of the birthpangs. Gospeler The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. At the invitation of the homilist, children may come forward, gathering at the foot of the chancel steps. Others sit for THE HOMILY The Reverend Elizabeth F. Keeler THE NICENE CREED W All stand and join in saying E believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE FORM III Father, we pray for your holy Catholic Church; That we all may be one. Grant that every member of the Church may truly and humbly serve you; That your Name may be glorified by all people. We pray for all bishops, priests, and deacons; That they may be faithful ministers of your Word and Sacraments. We pray for all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world; That there may be justice and peace on the earth. Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake; That our works may find favor in your sight. Have compassion on those who suffer from any grief or trouble; That they may be delivered from their distress. Give to the departed eternal rest; Let light perpetual shine upon them. We praise you for your saints who have entered into joy; May we also come to share in your heavenly kingdom. Let us pray for our own needs and those of others. A period of silence is kept. Then the adds a concluding collect. THE CONFESSION OF SIN AND ABSOLUTION The says Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. and M OST merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. The says Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. THE PEACE The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. THE GREETING AND ANNOUNCEMENTS All may greet one another in the name of the Lord. Then all sit for

T HE LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST THE OFFERTORY ANTHEM: O salutaris hostia O The begins the Offertory with a sentence of Scripture. As the alms are collected and the altar prepared, the choristers sing salutaris hostia, quae cæli pandis ostium, bella premunt hostilia: Da robur fer auxilium. Uni trinoque Domino sit sempiterna gloria. Qui vitam sine termino, nobis donet in patria. Amen. O saving Victim, opening wide the gate of heaven to us below, our foes press on from every side, thine aid supply, thy strength bestow. All praise and thanks to thee ascend for evermore, blest One in Three; O grant us life that shall not end in our true native land with thee. Amen. Words: attr. St. Thomas Aquinas (1225?-1274) Music: Edward Elgar ( ) All stand and join in singing THE DOXOLOGY AT THE PRESENTATION P RAISE God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host: praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Old 100th THE GREAT THANKSGIVING EUCHARISTIC PRAYER B The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise. The proceeds It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Here a Proper Preface is said. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

SANCTUS AND BENEDICTUS QUI VENIT All join in singing W The people kneel. The continues E give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Therefore, according to his command, O Father, and We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory; The continues And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.

By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN. THE LORD S PRAYER And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, O and UR Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD FRACTION ANTHEM Cantor The breaks the consecrated bread. A period of silence is kept. Then all join in singing The offers the following invitation. EHOLD the Lamb of God; behold him who takes away the sins of the world. B The Gifts of God for the of God. 10 PARISH ANNOUNCEMENT S Rita Yoe to Leave Christ Church: After four and a half years as Youth Missioner at Christ Church, Rita Yoe has accepted a new position as Programs Coordinator at the Claggett Center, an Episcopal camp and conference center in Buckeystown, Maryland, where she will manage the summer camp and year-round programming for children, youth, and adults. Rita will remain in ministry at Christ Church through the Christmas season. She will begin her tenure at the Claggett Center in mid- January. Rita s departure is a significant loss for the Christ Church family. We will miss her immensely. It is a wonderful opportunity for Rita, however, and we offer heartfelt congratulations on her appointment and best wishes for an exciting new phase of life and ministry. The Claggett Center is most fortunate to get her! Stewardship Update: The Stewardship Co-chairs and Vestry are deeply grateful for the overwhelming response to this year s campaign. As of Wednesday, November 14, pledges for 2019 totaled nearly $1,000,000 toward our goal of $1,550,000. We have received roughly 40 new pledges totaling $61,000. Pledge increases from more than 90 households total $188,000. In addition, the average pledge has increased by nearly $1,000. If you have not yet made a financial commitment for the coming year, we encourage you to do so as soon as possible. The Vestry, which meets this week, will soon begin making decisions about the 2019 operating budget. Your pledge will have a real impact on the planning process. To submit a pledge, visit the parish website and click on Pledge at the top right-hand corner of the screen, or fill out a pledge card, found in the pews, and drop it in the offering plate today. Planned Giving: All parishioners are invited to remember Christ Church in their estate plans. The Church is like a cairn. We all leave a stone when we get to the top of life s hill.
