2 Welcome to worship at First Lutheran! We especially welcome all who are visiting this morning! Held in Christ, our Center, and living in grateful response to God s love and grace, we welcome everyone, without exception. We make known our gratitude and appreciation of all, including people of every race, sex, age, color, creed, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, marital and familial status, physical and mental ability, health status, socioeconomic situation, education level and political affiliation. Please join with us as we seek to celebrate the image of God in all people, nurture meaningful relationships, and share our collective gifts in response to the world s deep hunger for hope, love, grace, justice, and peace. In the red pew hymnal (Evangelical Lutheran Worship), page numbers are at the bottom of the page in the front of the book, and hymn numbers are typically at the top of the page for the remainder of the book. Large print hymns are available from the ushers. An asterisk (*) invites you to stand in body or in spirit. All who thirst for God s love are welcome to participate during Holy Communion. Please extend your hands to receive Holy Communion or cross your arms to receive a blessing. Children s Bibles, Busy Boxes, and White Boards are available at the sanctuary entrance. A staffed nursery (for ages four and younger) is available down the hall across from the library. An usher will be happy to help you find it! Hearing assistance devices are available outside the sanctuary or from an usher. We also have a wheelchair and a defibrillator available let someone know if assistance is needed. You are invited to join us after worship for a time of fellowship in the Gathering Space right outside the sanctuary. You were foreigners, and did not belong to God s chosen people. You had no part in the covenants, which were based on God s promises to his people. You lived in this world without hope and without God! 13 But now, in union with Christ Jesus, you who used to be far away have been brought near by the death of Christ. 14 For Christ himself has brought us peace, by making the Jews and Gentiles one people. With his own body he broke down the wall that separated them and kept them enemies. 15 He abolished the Jewish Law, with its commandments and rules, in order to create out of the two races a single new people in union with himself, thus making peace. 16 By his death on the cross Christ destroyed the hatred; by means of the cross he united both races into one single body and brought them back to God. 17 So Christ came and preached the Good News of peace to all-to you Gentiles, who were far away from God, and to the Jews, who were near to him. 18 It is through Christ that all of us, Jews and Gentiles, are able to come in the one Spirit into the presence of the Father. 19 So then, you Gentiles are not foreigners or strangers any longer; you are now fellow-citizens with God s people, and members of the family of God! 20 You, too, are built upon the foundation laid by the apostles and prophets, the cornerstone being Christ Jesus himself. 21 He is the one who holds the whole building together and makes it grow into a sacred temple in the Lord. 22 In union with him you too are being built together with all the others into a house where God lives through his Spirt. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. 7 Distribution of Holy Communion This morning, we commune by means of intinction (dipping the wafer into the chalice). An usher will guide you forward. You will be given a wafer and offered a choice of two chalices. The wine is in a silver chalice; the grape juice is in a glass chalice. Gluten-free wafers are available. If you are unable to come forward, let an usher know, and communion will be brought to you. Parents, please assist children when they come forward to extend their hands if they are to receive the bread and wine. After receiving communion, you are invited to either side rail to receive a prayer of healing. Feel free to kneel or stand. 8 More about today s worship Ninth Sunday After Pentecost Mark s gospel makes clear how great was the press of the crowd, with its countless needs to be met, on Jesus and his disciples. Yet in today s gospel Jesus advises his disciples to get away and rest, to take care of themselves. Sometimes we think that when others are in great need we shouldn't think of ourselves at all; but Jesus also honors the caregivers need. We are sent from Christ s table to care for others and for ourselves (from Sundays and Seasons). The second pair of Pentecost panels features the flowers that are now appearing throughout our landscape, the next stage after the greening of the first pair. These changes reflect the changes in the lessons about the Holy Spirit and Christ's message and presence flourishing through this life. Note that the water on the East panels represent both the baptismal water of the adjacent font and the Minnesota river to the east of our church, while the grasses on the west represent the prairie which begins not so far to our west. We will now be reviewing notes from our interviews to select our preferred candidate and make a recommendation to the church council. If the council votes favorably on our recommendation, we will schedule a social opportunity for the congregation to meet the recommended pastor. This will prepare us for a special congregational meeting whereby the congregation will vote on the selection. If the congregational vote is favorable by a 2/3 majority ballot vote, the candidate will be issued a Letter of Call. Remaining recitals will be held at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. More info is at Back to School Backpack Project Friends of Learning (FOL) is organizing their annual Back to School Backpack Project to provide school supplies to local students whose families have limited resources. FOL believe that each child should start the school year with the tools needed to learn and therefore appreciates whatever cash contributions or school supplies you can donate.
