We are providing lifesaving health care to the forcibly displaced Myanmar Nationals (FDMN) in Cox s Bazar, focused on the most vulnerable ones; women and children. Because of your generosity, we have been able to alleviate the suffering of more than 100,000 Rohingya refugees, people who have fled their homes escaping from violence and persecution. I would also like to take this opportunity to express my deepest gratitude to our partners, who are supporting every step we take. Together we are stronger. Accept my endless appreciation. 3 Rohingya Crisis The Rohingya crisis is a human rights violation with serious humanitarian consequences. In Myanmar/Burma, the Rohingya have very limited access to basic services and viable livelihood opportunities due to strict movement restrictions and denied citizenship rights. This has rendered them one of the largest stateless populations in the world. The crisis has a wider regional dimension, with record numbers of Rohingya fleeing to neighbouring countries. Following violent incidents in northern Rakhine in August 2017, over 820,000 Rohingyas have fled across the border into Bangladesh. HOPE Foundation has been providing lifesaving health care to the Rohingya refugees in Cox s Bazar district through different partnerships and is working to address some of the most urgent needs, including: malnutrition, water, sanitation, protection and shelter for affected communities displaced by outbreaks of violence. 3

4 HOPE s Rohingya Response The Rakhine State in western Myanmar/Burma is home to at least 1.2 million Muslims, most of whom self-identify as Rohingya. For decades they have suffered legal and social discrimination; the 1982 Citizenship Law stripped Rohingyas of their citizenship and even the right to self-identify. The Rohingya are also subject to many restrictions in day to day life, including: a ban from traveling without authorization, being prohibited from working outside their villages and they cannot marry without permission. Due to movement restrictions, they lack sufficient access to livelihood opportunities, medical care and education. Because of the deplorable living conditions, tens of thousands of people including many women and children have fled on precarious boat journeys to Bangladesh. Many do not survive these journeys while others fall prey to human trafficking networks. HOPE Foundation has been serving the undeserved in Bangladesh since 1999 through its 40-bed hospital, 9 rural health centers, extensive field work, training health workers and midwives, and more. HOPE s team works every day to provide lifesaving care to the refugee and local population in Bangladesh. 4

5 Immediately after the Rohingya influx, HOPE Foundation established partnership with UNFPA Bangladesh and mobilized resources to serve the refugees through the following: Reproductive Health Centers Partners: UNFPA Bangladesh, Midwife Pilgrim a. 6 HOPE s Rohingya Response Primary Health Clinic Partners: UAE AID; Zayed Giving Initiative, Dar Al Bar Society, Sharjah Charity House, Saudi German Hospital Maternal Health Centers In Partnership with Minister of Health Bangladesh & UNFPA There are currently 4 maternal health centers including: Palongkhali Family Welfare Center (FWC), Whykong WFC, Rotna Palong, and Balukhali. 6

7 Emegency Evacuation System HOPE Foundation is running a 24/7 referral service by 20 Tom toms and 5 ambulances. 10 of these tom toms serve during day and 10 at night so as to facilitate quick transportation of patients with emergency. HOPE Hospital - 40 Beds HOPE Hospital, located several miles from the settlement, is expanding its capacity to treat patients from the Rohingya population. Serves as a referral center for the camp Deploys field workers to offer health advice door to door Mobilizes sick patients in the settlement area with makeshift stretchers Hosts visiting international medical teams and facilitates services & supplies 7

8 Rohingya Patient Stories Mohammad Ibrahim, 45 is from Shilkhali, near the Myanmar border. In Shilkhali he escaped while the military burnt his home to the ground; both of his sons were killed in this tragic incident. The next day he decided to flee from his village. It took 12 long and tiring days to reach safety in Bangladesh. Setera Begum, 23 is from Mondu, Myanmar. There she lived with her 2 sons, mother, and grandmother. The military came to her village one day and began burning houses to the ground. As soon as she saw her house on fire she and her family knew they had no choice but to flee. It took them 8 days to reach Bangladesh. Momtaz Begum, 35 is from Nappora, Myanmar; she currently lives in Jamtuli Camp in Cox s Bazar, Bangladesh. Here she lived with her husband and sons. In Nappora the military came into their village one day and brutally killed her husband, shooting him multiple times. Her sons constantly miss their father and begin weeping when they feel his absence. 8

10 HOPE Field Hospital for Women (Under Construction) The Field Hospital for Women will not only stabilize and - treat patients - it will also be a safe health care zone to stay (inpatient care) for women and children. This project is a collaborative initiative with multiple partners. This Field Hospital will be the first field hospital for women staffed by national and international professionals. It is estimated that around 1M refugees are living in the Rohingya settlements, 70% of them being women and children. The Field Hospital for Women is highly needed. These underserved people are living in very poor health conditions, suffering from preventable diseases. UNFPA + HOPE SRH and Emergency Training Program 1. HBB Helping Babies Breath 2.
