THE GEPPO A publication of the Ogden Buddhist Temple 155 North Street Ogden, UT / Supervising Reverend: Rev. Jerry Hirano Temple President: James Aoki Rev. Hirano contact info: Office Minister s Assistant: Annette Koga Home Web site: Emergency The Realm of Gratitude J.K. Hirano Many things occur in human lives. But, whatever difficulties or sadness that we may have experienced, if we can look upon our lives as being rare and wondrous events, then we will truly have lived. If we are able to realize this realm of gratitude, in which we are able to liveand die-in gassho, then what else could we need? ~Bearer of the Light, Jitsuen Kakehashi This is the time of year when I really appreciate the idea of transformation and impermanence in my life. It is one of the fundamental teachings in Buddhism. All around me, the Earth calls us to wake up and see true and real life. The Spring flowers bursting forth out of the fallen leaves of Autumn. Life is born out of the debris and silent death that winter brings. The green grasses of Spring, seem to sing and stretch forth from the yellow sod. The Earth understands that in life there is death and life again. However, we live in a world where permanence is stressed. We try to hold onto our youth, forgetting the knowledge that our age has given us. In our lives we are stressed out by the natural changes to our physical conditions. Shakyamuni Buddha proclaimed that birth, sickness, old age and death were the natural conditions of our lives. If we only focus and hold on to these four sufferings as problems, rather than natural occurrences, we may actually be wasting that which we are so fearful of losing, life itself! Even after years of studying Buddhism and knowing of these truths, I put myself beyond above it. As I watch the blooming of Spring, I seem to not want to acknowledge the browning and hardening of my own core. I must force myself to look at the change in my life. Where once there may have been a Spring, I am now facing the Autumn. In embracing this truth, I must acknowledge the changing world around me. Critics of Buddhism often point to the first noble truth; Life is suffering as proof that our teachings are negative and pessimistic. This is an extremely shallow understanding of this truth. While this first truth points out the fact that in life there is suffering, the other three truths point out a way to alleviate these sufferings. In addition, the idea that life is suffering stems from a deeper existential dilemma; that for me to live, something else must die. All of us would like to live a life without sickness. I believe this is an unattainable wish and there is so much we learn from our illnesses. As for old age, I find that as I grow older, I appreciate the fullness of what I am given, from the laughter of my children to the sound of my bones creaking in the morning as I awake. I am still alive! This realm of gratitude is the life of Nembutsu. It is the impermanence of each moment in life, moving forward, that I am allowed to appreciate this life I have been given. Shakyamuni Buddha said, Do not vainly lament, but wonder at the law of transiency... Do not cherish the unworthy desire that the changeable might become unchanging. As a result of this dynamic life force, which we Jodo Shinshu Buddhist s refer to as Amida Buddha s call, I am allowed to appreciate my life. In Japanese there is a word Shoji. It consists of the characters for life and death. It expresses the knowledge that both are one. As something lives, it dies at the same time, moment after moment. Our life is Shoji.

I remember playing bubbles with my children, we laughed and enjoyed the beauty of the bubbles. They glowed in the light as they flittered along the wind. The beauty of the bubble is in their fragile nature, their glow as they are embraced in the light and the sound of my children at play. Isn t the beauty of our lives and this life force, in knowing that we are all impermanent? To live forever would only mute the beauty and sound. Our lives are transformed moment after moment, living and dying, always embraced in the compassion of Amida Buddha. Let us try not to hold onto that which cannot be held onto. Life and death are one. As the Earth itself teaches us this lesson of birth and death, living and dying, let us live in the realm of gratitude. Appreciating both are essential aspects of who and what we are. This is the life of Nembutsu, this is the sound of Namo Amida Butsu. Dear Members and Friends, PRESIDENT S MESSAGE By James Aoki Can you believe the attendance at our Hanamatsuri Service! It was great to see so many of you attend the service, and support the Hanamatsuri program. I want to thank Mrs. Eiko Kishimoto for working with and teaching our Dharma schoolchildren the Japanese dances, the Dharma schoolteachers for all the creative and entertaining dances, skits, and songs, and our friends from the Salt Lake Buddhist Temple for participating in our program. I have received many positive comments on our program and hopefully the children had a good time performing. I also want to thank all those who braved the weather to help with the yard clean up; it looked wonderful and highlighted our beautiful Temple for our Hanamatsuri Service. It is going to be a very busy summer and in July we are having our Annual Obon Service and Dance Festival and the following week we are hosting the Mountain States District Conference so please volunteer if you have time and say yes if asked to help. We really need your support this summer. Again, if you have any questions about what s happening at the temple, want to help but don t know what to do or who to ask, please ask any board member. I look forward to seeing you at the temple. 4 My Three Days On A Quest By Annette Koga I want the members of Ogden Buddhist Church to know how much I appreciate the opportunity to go the Jodo Shinshu Center and to the BWA for sponsoring my trip. We started with a Thursday night service, with Socho Ogui giving his appreciation to each of us for taking time to come and learn the Buddha Dharma. I was over confident coming into this program. I ve been working as the Ministers Assistant for almost two years, and what I learned the first night was how much I didn t know. Before leaving home Emiko sent a service assignment by to all attendees. Even though we had our assignments we didn t know the Onaijin area, oh and by the way it is very nice. Ruth had pictures from when the BWA was given a tour, but they don t do it justice. It was moving. Rev. Zuikei Taniguchi gave a compelling talk titled Butsudan and I Learn from the Butsudan s Heart. He was very old school and I found it hard to understand every word he spoke, but I did not miss his message. His heart is so in tune with the Dharma. He made you feel, really feel respect for the Onaijin. After our time with him, I will do my best to show the utmost respect to our Onaijin in Ogden. We take so much for granted that was given with so much love and devotion. We each, as I said before, had an assignment for one service mine was Kansho - ringing the bell. I only do that about every week so again, over confident! My turn was on the second service together we had. We had a chance to practice as a group before we each did a solo. The Konsho was about 8 feet from the floor; I was very lucky to be as tall as I am. It was very hard to be soft and fast when you reach so high. We also practiced the traditional way to enter the Onaijin, I m mixed on my feeling on that. It was very respectful, very ritualistic but felt humbling. It s hard to explain other than a love / hate kind of thing. We were reminded very often that what we learned was the Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji-ha s way of doing things and not to worry or change anything our ministers have taught us. A lot of Temples are not set up to enter the way this was, from the back. We in Ogden can enter from the back but we would need several more ministers assistants to be able to work the whole thing out. Hint! Hint! We had two services each day and after each one we did a critique discussion and reflection. This was to learn not to discourage! The things we did wrong came back to the ritual of walking in and paying respect to the service book. The talks each person gave were excellent! I was moved by every one, and Mike was no exception. He gave his talk with confidence and heart, as did all the others. Maybe they will put them together somehow and let others hear or read them. I want the members to know one thing, even if you did not support the decision to build the JSC it is for the future of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism. One of the students in our group has been at the center for three weeks taking classes in religion and history. She is just thinking about the idea of taking things to the next level. If not for the center what could she do? She is not an IBS student, just a member that had some time, and a little curiosity. What if she did become a minister, what if a few other members felt maybe they would like to take a few weeks and really study Jodo Shinshu Buddhism? Now you have a place to come. I feel this will in a lot of ways make or break the church. If we don t show our support and get behind this it could be a great loss. It is a good thing they ve put together and we can benefit from it. It may take some of our money, but it will be well spent. Look into the classes they offer, example in June they have Honen & Shinran Pureland Masters within our Contemporary World Registration is $ and the rooms can be or This is Berkeley not very far from San Francisco, you can t get a room for that anyplace! Check out the website: bca-ocbc.org or even Rev. Umezu at: director@cbe-bca.org I sound like a commercial! It was a very good experience and I would just hope that as many members as possible could go and see for themselves how nice and sincere the people are. Thank you again, for giving me such a rewarding wonderful weekend. In Gassho, Annette Koga

ARE YOU PREPARED FOR THE PANDEMIC FLU?? By Alice Hirai The Weber County Pandemic Task Force is actively educating residents in Weber County to be prepared for the Pandemic flu. Pandemic is a communicable disease that hits worldwide at the same time. The World Health Organization is monitoring the Avian flu, bird flu, in Asia. This disease is highly contagious. The mortality rate is 50 60%. There are 6 phases in the pandemic flu. World wide we are in phase 3 where humans are infected but there are no human to human spread. The officials are trying to contain it to phase 3. If we get into Phase 4 there are small clusters with limited human to human transmission but the spread is localized. The fear is when the disease becomes very contagious from human to human, our nation needs to be prepared. We encourage everyone to attend a Pandemic Presentation on Sunday, May 18, 2008, after our guest speaker, Reverend Gibbs, gives his Dharma Talk, 1 pm. The presentation is about 25 minutes. All the churches in our area are being contacted by a representative from the Weber County Pandemic Task Force to help members be prepared. Alice Hirai, member of this Task Force, will be making this presentation. The mission of this group is to identify members in our church who are vulnerable, living alone, no family, disabled, or homebound. If you have someone in that position please pass that person s name onto to Alice Hirai, ahirai1@msn.com WENDOVER TRIP Rainbow Casino Sunday, June 29 $18 per person (includes free buffet + $5 back) Reservation Deadline: JUNE 22 Call Ellen Kato, (Board the Bus in Ogden, Riverdale, Layton or Woods Cross) Sponsored by The Ogden BWA

Member News Our Elsie Shiramizu ~ Being Honored By Alice Hirai The YCC, Your Community Connection, annually recognizes outstanding women in Northern Utah, 2008 Mattie Wattis Harris, Spirit of the American Woman Awards. Elsie has been awarded the prestigious In the Spirit of Quan Yin Award. This is awarded to an outstanding Asian woman in Northern Utah. This has been long overdue. She doesn t talk about her outstanding life of giving and serving others. At a young age when she was in Poston Camp in Arizona during WW2, the Red Cross gave Christmas gifts to all the children for Christmas. She never forgot that heartwarming experience even though she and her family were imprisoned. She made a promise to herself that when she grows up she will live a life of serving others. She is a life-long member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha, an international women s organization whose mission is to serve others, promote sisterhood, and become more knowledgeable about the world. She achieved a goal that is not achieved without difficulty let alone almost impossible. She became the International President in It was her organization that established the continuous donations to Danny Thomas s St. Jude Children s Hospital in Tennessee. ESA has donated millions of dollars through the years. Last year, they donated $14,000, to Danny s Hospital. This was started by Elsie. She has touched many lives of women, particularly to millions of women around the world to encourage them to work hard to get their education and reach their goals. Her mother, Mrs. Hanako Moriyama, made a great impact on her children. She taught them to be positive whatever they do, stay strong, serve others, and to get their education. Her influence on Elsie was strong. She and Date established a lifetime perpetual Epsilon Sigma Alpha Foundation Scholarship funding for worthy students. In her career she was a nursing professor at Weber State University College of Nursing teaching pediatrics for 21 years. She instilled in her students to provide excellence in care with compassion for their patients. Her former students would make comments such as, She had high expectations from us. With her strong influence, we are better nurses. made. One page of telling the life story of Elsie is impossible. There were so many other achievements she has Elsie always acknowledges Date. She expresses her love and appreciation to her best friend and partner who is always there to support her and help her so that she could accomplish the many goals she has met with excellence. She said she could not have done all of her life works without Date. When you think of Elsie, you are also thinking of Date. They are inseparable. The 2008 Mattie Wattis Harris, Spirit of the American Woman Awards will be held Saturday, May 17, 2008 at the Weber State University, Allred Theatre, at 7 pm. We invite everyone attend this event to celebrate Elsie s life and accomplishments. For more information call

Special Services GUEST SPEAKER: Rev. Gregory George Gibbs GOTAN-E May Shotsuki Hoyo Hatsumairi Sunday, May 18, 2008 Service at 1:00 p.m. Rev. Gibbs was born in Santa Rosa California and later grew up in Fresno California. He attended Catholic schools growing up and then attended Fresno State College where he encountered and embraced the Buddhist teachings. After 15 years of a Soto Zen approach he came to the Fresno Betsuin where he was immediately attracted to Shinran's interpretation of the Nembutsu path. Rev. Gibbs studied at the Institue of Buddhist studies and the Graduate Theological Union, graduating with a Master of Jodo Shinshu Studies degree and a Masters degree in Religious Studies. He studied at Chuo Bukkyo Gakuin and received Tokudo ordination in 1993 and Kyoshi in From 1994 through 2001 he served at the Los Angeles Betsuin. Since January of 2002 he has been the resident Minister at the Oregon Buddhist Temple. This service is to celebrate the birth of Shinran Shonin ( ), the founder of our sect. It is also called Fujimatsuri in reference to the Wisteria flower which represents our sect. Unlike other flowers which seem to stand up straight and tall when in full blossom, the wisteria hangs down, when in full bloom, as if in humility. This teaches us that a true and real human being does not stand up in arrogance at their accomplishments, but rather realizes that they have so much for which to be grateful. In connection with this very special observance, we hold Shosanshiki also know as Hatsumairi (First visit ceremony) or Infant Presentation service. This service is held for all children born into our Sangha over the past year. It is a day to present the child to Buddha and to the Sangha, and to celebrate their first step upon following the Dharma. June Shotsuki Hoyo held in conjunction with Family Service Sunday, June 15, 2008 Service at 10:00 a.m.

The Jodo Shinshu Center Cost Story By Steven Kato James Aoki and I represented the Ogden Buddhist Temple at the 2008 BCA National Council meeting held in Portland, Oregon. Of the many topics discussed, I found those pertaining to the Jodo Shinshu Center (JSC) particularly interesting. I ll admit that prior to attending the National Council meeting, about the only things I knew about the JSC was that it was located in California, was severely in debt, and that BCA was always asking for large donations. I now know a little more and would like to inform the Sangha of my understandings. Several facts were however apparent - - More money is necessary to solve the JSC financial situation - The Campaign BCA the 21 st Century Annual Report shows o the Ogden Temple is one of the lowest within BCA regarding JSC contributions and o the Ogden Temple has the lowest percentage of Temple member participation within BCA. Following is a brief JSC history and where we are today. History The JSC was completed August 2006 with the purpose to serve BCA members and propagate Jodo Shinshu teachings in the United States. The JSC has classrooms for educational seminars and workshops, as well as dining and sleeping accommodations. The JSC also houses the Institute of Buddhist Studies, the Center for Buddhist Education, Kyoto s Ryuoku University, and the BCA Bookstore. The resolution to start Campaign BCA the 21 st Century was approved by the National Council in March At that time it was estimated that the JSC cost would be about $10 million. The final JSC cost was $21.6 million. Some factors contributing to the increased final cost were: - Higher than expected property and facility acquisition costs - Licensing problems - Facility re-designs during construction - Increased construction material costs - Rainy weather that caused unplanned construction efforts and expenses (A more complete discussion of cost increases is provided in the 2007 BCS Annual Report located in the Temple Library) Current Financial Status As of May 2007, the JSC debt was about $9.3 million. The Campaign BCA the 21 st Century Annual Report summarizes funds donated through December 2007 by each Temple and also the percent of Temple membership participation. As mentioned previously, - The Ogden Temple has the lowest membership participation within BCA at only 2.13%. This compares to an overall BCA membership participation of 29.83%. Summary I now believe the JSC is important to all of us - not only for today, but also for future generations. In hindsight, perhaps things could have done differently, but they cannot be changed - THIS IS the current situation confronting BCA and us. Both James and I feel the JSC deserves support from our Temple and members. Many qualified people are working extremely hard to resolve this issue. We know money is limited for everyone and we have our own Temple financial challenges. We also realize it can be difficult relating to the JSC being way out in Berkley, California. For these reasons, we re not so much concerned about the dollar amounts donated, but we do feel our membership participation number can be improved. Please feel free to call either of us if you have questions and we ll answer them to the best of our ability. If there s enough interest within the Sangha, we could even arrange to have someone from the Campaign committee meet with us in Ogden. We re confident that our Temple can show BCA that we are concerned about, and support the JSC. If possible, we d like our contributions to occur during calendar year 2008 so our numbers will be reflected in the next Campaign BCA the 21 st Century Annual Report. Thank you very much for your consideration on this matter.
