2 Chapter 2 : Dhamma Books â à à à à Š à à œà à Š ithink Download Sathyodaya - Ven Walpola Rahula Theravada Buddhism book March 23, By Hiran Leave a Comment Sathyodaya or The Dawn of Truth is an 88 page booklet, written by Ven. Prof Walpola Rahula, one of the greatest Buddhist scholars of our time. Who can write about a religion best? An insider or an outsider? Then surely the insider is the one best placed to introduce ot Invitation Complications or Who is the Best Spokesperson for a Religion? Then surely the insider is the one best placed to introduce others to this sacred mystery? This is done by adhering to a faithful and accurate presentation of the actual words used by the Buddha as they are to be found in the original Pali texts of the Tipitaka, universally accepted by scholars as the earliest extant records of the teachings of the Buddha. Almost all the material Rahula commands so effortlessly are taken directly from these originals. That way it must be admitted that only a scholar of his stature could have brought us so close to the original teachings. What that something is has to be judged by the author. The rest can be kept for later, if the guest decides to stay awhile. Now to return to our problem. Can an insider do this? After all, the insider is as much an alien to other religions as the visitor is to his own. So how can he write for the visitor? How can he inhabit his viewpoint and judge what would suit him best? Could it be that the one best placed to understand the house is not so well suited to understand the visitor? So a Christian reader would need a christian author to interpret Buddhism for him? A 21st century reader would need a 21st century guide? Who else can understand the reader as well? And in any case, since we are going down this road, who can understand both - the ancient house and the modern visitor? I think the best compromise would be to allow the welcome sermon to be delivered by a scholar outside the tradition, but steeped in it. One who has stayed in the house long enough to feel at home there. This is why every age needs to reinterpret its holy texts and greatest works. Only then would they take the trouble to go visit too. And maybe stay awhile. Page 2

3 Chapter 3 : Download Sathyodaya â Ven Walpola Rahula Theravada Buddhism book Walpola Rahula Thero () was a Sri Lankan Buddhist monk, scholar and writer. In, he became the Professor of History and Religions at Northwestern University, thus becoming the first bhikkhu to hold a professorial chair in the Western world. Walpola Rahula Thero â the finest make of a visionary academic Ven. Walpola Rahula thero was one of the most celebrated Buddhist monks in Sri Lankan history. Not only he was an excellent academic and keen scholar, but also a visionary leader. His fame travelled across borders which made him an internationally revered figure. Academic achievements Rahula thero received his education at Vidyalankara Pirivena and later on earned his degree at University of Ceylon present University of Colombo. He studied further at University of Culcutta and at Sorbonne University. His knowledge was well sought after. He visited many other foreign universities to hold lectures. The entire student population rejoiced over his instigation, as it was a triumph on the part of the university to have such an acclaimed academic in its highest administration. Accordingly, he did so much to the improvement of the university though his tenure of office was rather short. Having worked with academics from universities worldwide, Rahula thero succeeded in arranging for foreign professors to visit Sri Jayewardenepura University to conduct lectures for local students. Equally, there were opportunities created for local lecturers to go abroad for training programmes. During his time, he included several diploma and post-graduate diploma courses to the existing study list and many of them were new pathways for students to explore in. Rahula thero believed that a university must be an autonomous body. He viewed it to be the way that disciplined, efficient and productive academics could be turned out for the society. He administered the university in par with that belief. His vision and skill were thus showcased, proving him to be the best in the field of university education, in his time. When he resigned from the post in, Ven. Rahula thero had left behind a legend that is reminisced about up to date. Service to Buddhism His contribution to the advancement of Buddhism was tremendous. As an accomplished writer, Ven. Rahula had published books on Buddhism in Sinhala, English and French. Not only they took Buddhist doctrines to the world, but they also provided guidelines for monks, explaining how they can do more for the society with Buddhist teachings. After having left his office at Sri Jayewardenepura University, Rahula thero again rendered his services to foreign universities. Literary voyage Some of his most famous works among his numerous writings. The contents focus on basic realization on what is Buddhism. Rather than concentrating on the person of Buddha, it discusses his actual teachings. In its eight chapters, four are dedicated to the four noble truths, explaining them in vivid detail. Readers note that it is a kind of a book that compels you to go back to it, re-read, in order to find essence of life again and again. Rahula thero was beyond doubt an invaluable personage, who extended invaluable services to humanity. He took Sri Lanka to the world with his extraordinary knowledge and thus paid his dues to his country. He set a significant example to his students and monks. As a venerable priest, he worked assiduously for the expansion of Buddhism among masses. For all this and much more he offered, Ven. Page 3

It has. I encourage everyone to buy this jewel of a book. The Oxford Centre for! Buddhist Studies A Recognised Independent http: Walpola Rahula and the politicisation of the Sinhala Sangha. Tinti is an independent research scholar. Almost all major religions, whether western or eastern, renouncer or redeemer, monotheist or agnostic, have contested for sovereignty, even before the idea of a state came into existence. Sinhala Sangha activism Within the scope of political science, one cannot understand the processes of ac- cessing and using power, individually or collectively, without studying those who aspire to alter the course of their society. Records suggest that one can identify at least seven high points of Sangha activism in recent history. Senanayake Sangha initiative for organised demand Ven. Amid the deeply destabilising forces of globalisation that had shaken the foundations of the traditional security of Sri Lanka society, these monks found a new and more energised moral authority to intervene from the sacred sphere to the secular. Seneviratne has vividly doc- umented the social transformation of these monks, as they exchanged their lokut- tara supramundane spiritual responsibilities for laukika worldly secular power politics. Among them, Walpola Rahula was a powerful articulator with an appealing style of writing. Rahula took to preaching â of a reformist kind, calling on the institutionalised Sangha to rediscover their lost heritage. As a young, articulate monk, he was a natural leader in protest activities. Rahula by now fully understood the potential of the written word, and in late he published a manifesto for the future. We should not follow their example and should not attempt to withdraw bhikkhus from society. Such conduct would assuredly be a deplorable act of injustice, committed against our nation, our country and our religion. Rahula included both these texts in his Heritage, which instantly became a ready reference work for political activism amongst the Sangha. Senanayake, the agriculture minister in the last pro-colonist government. Yet he feared the power of this new Sangha nationalism. Rahula predicted the success of his own polemic. As summarised by Tilakaratne: Ananda was the exact opposite: As Seneviratne holds, the dhamma is to be practised and not to be pro- tected. To many younger monks who desired a liberated monastic order, he had provided a blueprint for action. With the success and the acceptance of the Heritage, Rahula took to task the relaxed, rural Sangha leadership. With self-appointed authority, he challenged â the ritualistic lifestyle of the average senior monk in Sri Lanka. Rahula, by his well-timed intervention in the form of the Heritage, seems to have achieved two distinct but convergent aims. Today there is a discourse about peace in Sri Lanka. Walpola Rahula was only one of those who, at a critical point in the modern history of Sri Lanka, permanently reshaped the polity of the island. A question of fundamentals.
