Learners in Action Wilmette Institute Learner Reports Becoming Closer To the Blessed Beauty during an Online Course Faculty: Paula Bidwell Duration of course: Seven weeks (September 7 - October 25, 2015) In Two Peacemakers: Baha'u'llah and Deganawida we will begin by reviewing Baha'i texts that support the idea that Messengers of God were sent to the indigenous peoples of North America. Native Baha'is (and many others) believe that "the Peacemaker" was a Messenger of God sent to the Five Nations of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois), just as Baha'u'llah was sent to the entire world. The Peacemaker (also known as Deganawida) revealed laws and founded a League of Peace, which was the first democracy in North America. The Peacemaker taught: "Now it is arriving, the Peace. This means that it is peace that will unite all the people. Indeed, it will be as though they have but one mind, which means that there will be unity. When they are functioning, the Good Message and also the Power and the Peace, moreover, these will be the principal things everybody will live by; these will be the great values among the people" (Concerning the League 39-40). We will focus on the Peacemaker's teachings, especially about peace and social order, and compare them with similar teachings in the writings of Baha'u'llah. Learn about Iran's ancient religion and its Manifestation and how they shaped the Baha'i Faith Another course in a series on world religions Lead Faculty: Susan Maneck Faculty: Robert Stockman Duration of course: Seven weeks (September 10 - October 28, 2013) Zoroastrianism, an ancient religious tradition founded by Zoroaster, or Zarathustra, some five hundred to one thousand years before Christ, is the focus of Zoroastrianism for Deepening and Dialogue. We will examine Zoroaster's life; what has survived of His words; His teachings; the subsequent spread and development of the Zoroastrian tradition; references to Zoroastrianism in the writings of Baha'u'llah and 'Abdu'l-Baha; and the relationship of Zoroastrianism to later religions (Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and the Baha'i Faith). We will study Zoroaster and the divinely ordained religion He founded to deepen in the basics of Zoroastrianism and its relationship to the Baha'i Faith and to prepare for dialogue with adherents of Zoroastrianism. Learn how to live sustainably to save the Earth One in a series of courses on aspects of global civilization Lead Faculty:Arthur Lyon Dahl Faculty:Gary Colliver, Carole Flood, Christine Muller Duration of course: Seven weeks (September 15 - November 2, 2015) In Sustainable Development and the Prosperity of Humankind we will address the urgent need to

Course Description Fees Course Schedule Register Financial Aid A new title for a course examining 'Abdu'l-Baha's advice on the need for a world federation of nation-states to solve global problems One in a series of courses on aspects of global civilization Lead Faculty: Sovaida Maani Ewing Duration of course: Seven weeks (October 1 - November 18, 2015) As humanity passes through stages of collective growth and moves toward integration and unity, it finds itself caught in the thick of many painful challenges that mark a turbulent adolescence. These challenges take the form of seemingly intractable collective crises such as climate change, financial upheavals (such as the Greek debt crisis), proliferation of nuclear weapons, gross human-rights atrocities, and mismanagement of critical natural resources. In Building a World Federation: The Key to Resolving Our Global Crises, we will together examine how we can solve these and similar problems. Key to taking the next steps toward the inevitable stage of maturity is 'Abdu'l-Baha's advice offered a century ago about establishing collective decision-making and implementing institutions that can and should evolve into a world federation of nation-states. Finally, we will learn how to respond effectively to skeptics who argue that creating a global federation is a pipe-dream because nations will never be willing to cede sovereignty, and we will equip ourselves with ways to allay fears that such a move will lead to an abusive world government that is so excessively centralized that it will not heed the voices of diverse populations and minorities and will trample upon their rights. Study what Shoghi Effendi calls the "most important book written on the spiritual significance of the Cause" One in a series of courses exploring the revelation of Baha'u'llah Lead Faculty: Christopher Buck Faculty: Daniel Pschaida Duration of course: Seven weeks (October 10 - November 28, 2015) Revealed in January 1861, the Kitab-i-Iqan (the Book of Certitude) is the "most important book written on the spiritual significance of the Cause" and a work that Baha'u'llah calls "the lord of books." Among the "foremost" works of His Revelation, the Iqan is "unequalled by any work in the entire range of Baha'i literature, except the Kitab-i-Aqdas." The Iqan is unique in that "this Book alone" provides the basis for reconciling the followers of "the great religions of the world." This celebrated book "contains the basic tenets of the Faith" and "explains the attitude" of the Baha'i Faith toward "the prophets of God and their mission in the history of society." It elucidates key allegorical passages in the New Testament and the Qur'an that have caused misunderstandings among religious leaders. The Book of Certitude is one of Baha'u'llah's great "contributions to the world's religious literature" and is "of unsurpassed preeminence among the doctrinal and ethical writings of the Author of the Baha'i Dispensation." Increase your understanding of Baha'u'llah's principle of the equality of women and men Another in a series on aspects of global civilization Lead Faculty: Vasu Mohan Faculty: Leila Milani, Anne Pearson, Fulya Vakiloglu Duration of course: Seven weeks (October 15 - December 9, 2015) In The Equality of Woman and Men: Application in Private and Public Life we will aim to acquire a thorough understanding of the Baha'i principle of the equality of women and men and to explore its application in personal development, family life, the workplace, and Baha'i communities and in engaging with public discourse. We will address topics such as the nature of human identity and the acquisition of self-knowledge; equality in the family; transforming economic structures and processes; women's role in building peace and governance; eliminating violence against women; men and boys as partners in achieving equality; and the important role played by the media. We will draw on the Baha'i writings, social science and policy research, and analysis and commentary from a variety of sources. Special emphasis will be placed on champions of equality from Baha'i history, including 'Abdu'l-Baha, and the use of case studies of successful

6 6 of 9 1/4/2016 8:59 AM initiatives and communities working toward gender equality in the private and public spheres. Participation from both male and female learners is strongly encouraged to maximize opportunities for learning. An introduction to the life of the Manifestation of God for this day One in a series of courses on the Central Figures of the Baha'i Faith Lead Faculty: Necati Alkan Faculty: Peter Smith Duration of course: Seven weeks (October 20 - December 9, 2015) At the center of the Baha'i Faith stands the person of Baha'u'llah, Who has the high station of the Manifestation of the Names and Attributes of God for this age. He envisioned the essential unity and interconnectedness among all humanity and laid down the principles and outlined the framework that would enable the creation of a more egalitarian and participative society, able to include women and ethnic minorities. We will study Baha'u'llah's childhood and youth; His acceptance of the Bab, His forerunner; His station as a Manifestation of God; His exiles to Baghdad, Istanbul, Edirne, and Acre; His years in Mazra'ih and Bahji; His Covenant; and His revelation that crystallized His vision into principles and teachings for transforming human life. Assigned readings are taken either from Moojan Momen's Bahá'u'lláh: A Short Biography or H. M. Balyuzi's Bahá'u'lláh: The King of Glory. Both can be purchased online, new or used. Worldcat.org can tell you if a local library has copies of them. Learn how to read historical writings carefully and analytically One in a series of courses on Baha'i history Lead Faculty: Moojan Momen Faculty: Susan Maneck Duration of course: Seven weeks (October 25 - December 13, 2015) Understanding Baha'i History differs from most courses offered by the Wilmette Institute in that it aims to teach students how to read historical writings critically, rather than to impart knowledge on a given topic. In other words, the course introduces students to the academic study of Baha'i history, showing them how to read historical accounts analytically. Three units will examine motifs of Baha'i history, breaking through cultural boundaries, and the basics of critical reading. Four additional units use specific accounts (for example, the Bab's childhood and the Danish Baha'i community) to examine the nature of the evidence an author uses and the arguments presented in an article. The course aims to provide learners with tools that will enable them to read more widely than the standard accounts of Baha'i history and to be able to assess them using the techniques taught in the course. Revisit how 'Abdu'l-Baha taught and how He inspired Bahá'ís and

7 7 of 9 1/4/2016 8:59 AM non-bahá'ís One in a series of courses exploring the ministry, writings, and talks of 'Abdu'l-Baha Lead Faculty: Robert Stockman Faculty: Anne Perry Duration of course: Seven weeks (November 1 - December 19, 2015) 'Abdu'l-Baha's Visit to North America will explore 'Abdu'l-Baha's epochal 239-day journey across the North American continent in In the course we will look at the journey both chronologically and thematically, considering each of the places the Master visited and His various accomplishments: proclaiming the Baha'i teachings to the public; demonstrating the oneness of humanity through His racially integrated meetings; encouraging the marriage of Louis Gregory, an African American, and Louisa Mathew, an English woman; affirming gender equality and the advancement of women; showing concern for the poor through visits to six social service agencies and settlement houses; comforting the infirm in visits to Baha'is and friends of Baha'is unable to come to Him; deepening Baha'is in the fundamental verities of the Faith and urging them to teach it widely; patiently explaining the Covenant and warning about Covenant-breakers; reforming Baha'i governing bodies; reinvigorating Baha'i communities; lovingly mentoring young Baha'is and pouring out His love to children. An initial unit will discuss requests from American Baha'is that prompted 'Abdu'l-Baha to visit North America. 'Abdu'l- Baha's journey in the United States and Canada teaches us many things, provides many stories we can tell that will attract others to Him and to the Baha'i Faith, and prepares us for ongoing opportunities for public discourse. The course will also provide ideas for observing the two November holy days associated with 'Abdu'l-Baha. Deepen on the New Testament and explore ways to dialogue with a variety of Christians One of many courses providing an integrated approach to world religions Lead Faculty: Ted Brownstein Duration of course: Seven weeks (November 10 - December 29, 2015) The Christian New Testament is a collection of chronicles and letters that pertain to the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth, known as Christ. Composed by several different writers between 50 and 130 C.E., the works were accepted as a sacred collection in the third and fourth Christian centuries. In Exploring the New Testament, we will study the New Testament's major books in the light of progressive revelation and in their historical context. We will cover the Gospels; writings attributed to James, Jude, Paul, and Peter; the Book of Revelation; and specific themes in the New Testament. We will also briefly examine the vast Christian literature that did not become part of the approved "canon" now known as the New Testament. Our study of the New Testament is for the purposes of deepening and dialogue--that is, for understanding the basics of Christianity as a divinely revealed religion (and, by comparison, the Baha'i Faith) and for learning how to share the perspective of the Baha'i Faith with a variety of Christians in an informed and respectful manner.

8 8 of 9 1/4/2016 8:59 AM Find out how the twentieth century prepares us for sharing the "challenging implications" of Baha'u'llah's revelation An historical study released by the Baha'i World Center Lead Faculty: Ed DiLiberto Faculty: Robert Wilson Duration of course: Seven weeks (November 15, January 2, 2016) 'Abdu'l-Baha referred to the twentieth century as the "century of light" while also forecasting terrible trials for humanity and events of great consequence for humanity's future. In 2001 the Universal House of Justice released an historical study of the century, noting that between 1900 and 2000 "our world underwent changes," mostly little understood, "far more profound than any in its preceding history" and, at the same time, the Baha'i Faith emerged from obscurity, "demonstrating on a global scale the unifying power with which its Divine origin has endowed it." In Century of Light we will review, in the context of the Baha'i teachings, the two processes of the disintegration of an old order and the emergence of a new order and will examine the relationship between them. Our aim will be to tap into a perspective that is "spiritually enriching" and also "of practical help in sharing with others the challenging implications of the Revelation brought by Baha'u'llah." Finding unity and harmony in the principles of science and religion One is a series of courses on Baha'i theology and philosophy Lead Faculty: Stephen Friberg Faculty: Roger Neyman, Lisa Ortuno Duration of course: Seven weeks (November 20, January 7, 2016) The world has seen a remarkable growth of science and an unprecedented decline in the influence of religion since the birth of Baha'u'llah two hundred years ago. Many have come to believe that science and religion are deeply at odds with each other, leading to bitter and sometime tragic divisiveness. In Science, Religion, and the Baha'i Faith, we will look at Baha'u'llah's teachings affirming that science and religion are both essential to human welfare and that they must be in harmony with each other. After examining an historical overview of the relationship between science and religion, we will explore the unique Baha'i approach to their affinity. Shoghi Effendi, the Guardian of the Baha'i Faith, for example, has declared that the Faith is "scientific in its method," suggesting that scientific implies a broader context than the natural sciences. We will study the Baha'i writings as they relate to physics, cosmology, biology, and evolution and then consider some perspectives they inspire with regard to the environment and new Atheism. Finally, we explore the call by the Universal House of Justice for the systematic development of strong and growing communities through a "culture of learning" and will consider effective ways to apply the principles of science and religion to unity and harmony.
