1 VIRTUAL ACADEMY Honors/AP Summer Reading Requirement Assignment to be completed during the summer break: 1. Choose one of the novels from the appropriate grade list. (library or purchase) 2. Complete a dialectic journal during the summer. Choose 10 quotes to thoroughly analyze (see the attached template). The completed journal is due the first day of class in the fall. 3. This is NOT a book review. Do not summarize the book. Do not explain the meaning of the quote. Your assignment is to ANALYZE how the quote contributes to the theme of the book (which you must also identify). When you get back to school: 4. All students will be required to write an in-class essay about the summer reading novel. These assignments are due on the first day of school and will count towards your grade; so it is very important that you complete all the reading and work. 2 Seniors, in addition to reading ONE novel, you need to read all of the book of Matthew and chapters 1-3 and 6-9 of Genesis, from the Bible. Online versions of the Bible abound; therefore, you do not have to purchase a Bible for this task. The preferred Bible translation is either New King James (NKJV) or American Standard Version (ASV). Honors/ AP Dialectical Journal Requirements The following are the guidelines/requirements for the Honors dialectical journal assignment: 1. Select a novel from the Summer Reading List document - Read the entire novel and take notes/mark passages that are important to the plot and theme. 2. Identify one of the major themes of the novel. This is the theme for which you will select supporting quotations. Some of the most common themes found in literature include: Man vs. Nature, Man vs. Society, Man struggles to Understand Divinity, Overcoming Adversity, Friendship/Love is dependent upon sacrifice, Sacrifice brings rewards, Death is part of Life. 3. Select ten (10) quotes from your novel that illustrate how the author develops the theme - The quotes should be of sufficient length to provide a thorough analysis (avoid single lines) and you should bold the literary device the author uses in the selected quote to develop the theme. i.e. symbolism, irony, foreshadowing, flashback, imagery, tone, characterization, plot development etc. 4. Organize the paper - Use MLA format headers, formatting, and labeling. Do not use a cover page for this assignment. The body of the dialectical journal should be in a double-column format with one column labeled Passage or Quote, and the other labeled Analysis. If you do not have access to a computer, use the same format, but print neatly, in ink.
3 5. Type (or print neatly, in ink) in the quotes - Ensure that the passages are accurately typed into the paper. Cite the passage using MLA format for parenthetical citations. (Author s last name number of page). (Shelley 73). 6. Type (or print neatly, in ink) your analysis of the quote - DO NOT SUMMARIZE in your analysis DO NOT REVIEW THE BOOK (statements such as this is a great book or an exciting book ) and DO NOT EXPLAIN THE QUOTE. Do not write In this quote the author is saying Your teachers understand the quotes. Your analysis should explain the quote s importance to developing the theme. 7. You must include the context for each quote. Explain where and when the quote occurs in the novel. Help the reader understand the context in which the quote occurs. The context for the quote must be completed for each quote. (Context must be completed for each passage. You will have a total of 10 passages, each with contexts and analysis). Quote / Passage 1. There is something at work in my soul which I do not understand there is a love of the marvelous, a belief in the marvelous which hurries me out of the common pathways of men, even to the Analysis This passage foreshadows Frankenstein s obsession with his creation supports the theme of the evil results of man s desire for power. Frankenstein also sees his new knowledge as marvelous, and pursues it relentlessly. His experiment eventually leads him out of the common
4 wild sea and unvisited regions I am about pathways of men, and into unvisited regions where to explore (Shelley 7). humans should not have gone, further supporting the theme. Additionally, this passage displays the narrator s optimistic view of the world. The tone of this particular passage borders on reverential, especially when speaking about the unknown. This view is then contrasted with the dark tale which follows. The contrast between optimism and bleak despair serves to highlight the theme about overreaching one s limits in the pursuit of power.
