1 STEP ONE: ENQUIRER A seeker of information by investigation Understanding Roots Openness Skills Passion I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious. Albert Einstein Brett Moran: Being macho and not talking about emotions or feelings I actually needed to look inside and find out what was going on.

2 John Paul DeJoria: Open up and look at everything around you. It s almost like you re in a movie and you re the star actor. Enquiry encourages us to look and the world and to look at ourselves Where will your journey begin? Brett Moran: First of all it was hard, but it didn t seem as hard as I thought it would be. And I noticed I could start to make a bit of peace. Sometimes life s challenges lead us on a voyage of discovery James Caan: When I was leaving home, that giant step out of the house was an incredible emotional step forward because I was venturing out into the unknown. You know I had no money, I had no job Our problems provide us with an opportunity to make different choices Brett Moran: When they said you would be put on remand to await a sentence in HMP Highdown, it felt like the whole world had stopped again. You know my heart just sank. I could see my mum s reaction, she broke down in tears.

3 James Caan: And there was no question in my mind, that subconsciously I was hoping that my mother would come running after me and say, don t be silly. But to my shock and horror neither of them did. And every step I took it became even harder to look back. Brett Moran: It just felt like my whole life, my whole world, just completely stopped in that one moment. And the worst thing was the reaction on my mum. When I see my mum and see how much I really hurt her, it really confirmed all the crimes and the lifestyle I was sort of living. It just sort of showed me how much I was hurting people. Crisis bring on Enquiry and Opportunities for Growth James Caan: But kind of every day I became stronger and realized that I had to prove to my father that, you know what, I can make it and I will make it. Do our crises come from the patterns and cycles around us? Look around you, there are patterns and cycles everywhere.

4 Ian Stewart: Let s go for the big scale, and look out into the universe into space. The most striking pattern that everyone knows about is the spiraling pattern of galaxies. The galaxy is about two hundred billion stars, it s an enormous number of stars, but they clump together, like a kind of whirl pool in space. Spirals are very very common as mathematical patterns from the huge scale of the galaxies right down to snail s shells. Go out in your back garden and look at a snail, the shell is spiral, it coils round and round. If you look at a whirlpool, a little one maybe in a river, or one of the bigger ones you get in an ocean, that s water moving round and round in a spiral it flows in towards the middle. The wonderful thing is that when you look at these patterns, they are not just once offs, they keep coming up the same pattern comes up all over the place. Across all the worlds deserts you see the same basic 5 or 6 different kinds of sand dune. There are ones that just form straight lines; there are beautiful crescent shaped dunes which slowly move and then if you go out into the solar system and look on Mars, all of the same patterns of dunes are appearing on Mars. There are laws, there are perhaps secret rules behind the scenes that govern how the natural world, really behaves. If you see a very striking mathematical pattern repeated on several different planets, let alone across the surface of the earth, that says the same kinds of laws of nature must be operating everywhere. It s not just all chaotic and random there is something much deeper going on. By Understanding these cycles and patterns we can start to understand our lives Gregg Braden: When we see a neural pattern in a human brain, the neurons firing and the way the nerves connect with one another, we look at the energy patterns that connect galaxies in the universe. Those patterns side by side look very, very similar.

5 David Hamilton: If you look at blood vessels and the way they branch into tiny capillaries that look like a river delta. It also looks like branches in a tree. You can even look inside the brain and you can look at how brain cells create little branches that look, that look like branches in a tree or even roots on a tree. And you see this symmetry between the tiniest things in the neural net, in your blood vessels, in different parts of the body, even in the iris s and the eye, the way the blood vessels move through the iris, like a river delta. You see nature expressing itself inside your body in the same way that nature expresses itself out in the world. Jack Canfield: Reality has patterns, everything is a pattern. I mean, our breathing is a pattern, we inhale, and we exhale, there are circadian rhythms in body we can literally chart how our bio rhythms go throughout the day. Barbara Hubbard: A child has a pattern of development. It starts as a little zygote and then it becomes a fetus and it s going to overgrow the womb and be born. We re used to that pattern. The life cycle of a human Scilla Elworthy: There is really no effort required just to open up to what is the essential beauty of being a human being. You just have to look at a cell in your skin and it s exquisite. And billions of those cells go to make up this body with all these incredible organs that know what to do without us telling them and they do it 24/7. It s amazing and to inhabit one of those is the greatest privilege you could imagine, to inhabit a human body

6 Where do these patterns come from? Harry Massey: As I started to research and gain a greater understanding of how the world works, I came across this idea of fractal patterns and fractal patterns are a self repeating pattern that you see everywhere in nature from the, from clusters of galaxies down to the shape of DNA. Gregg Braden: Our reality, as chaotic as it looks to us, from time to time, is actually built of very simple patterns and probably relatively few simple patterns that simply repeat themselves, again and again and again, and combine in different ways to give us the reality as we know it today The whole universe is fractal in nature. Ian Stewart: If you go into a supermarket, you can buy a type of broccoli called Broccoli Romanesco. So it is like a cauliflower, but it is bright green. And it is absolutely beautiful; it really is worth looking at this thing. Because it s a wonderful spiral pattern of little lumps. Very regular spirals. But when you look at the little lumps they are very regular spirals of even smaller lumps. And in fact the smaller lumps are regular spirals of really, really tiny little lumps.

7 How do fractals affect our lives? David Hamilton: I would say that as we, as we are part of nature and nature has these cycles which influence our behavior, then many of the patterns of human experience you see in the world could actually be affected by these cycles of nature. So therefore what you see is political behavior running in cycles. You even see social behavior running in cycles. Which are probably in some way related to the overall cycles of nature. How do these fractal patterns show up in our lives? Ian Stewart: If you look at the stock market, the way the price changes over a day or a year. The stock market is going up and down all the time, the price in two seconds time might be higher than it is now, might be lower than it is now. But over the day you start to see some sort of general trend. Maybe the prices have declined; maybe the market s gone up. But it is not a straight line. So fractals in time are just as common, maybe even more common than fractals in space. What do fractals and cycles mean in my day to day life? Ian Stewart: What does all this mathematics of cycles and fractals and choice points and all of this stuff mean for a human being living their life, trying to make the right choices, trying to be successful, trying to protect their family, whatever, in a world that may or may not be designed to help them do that? If you look deep down inside nature, patterns will appear, things can look disordered, they can look random, but there should be a hidden order to them. And if we want to understand them our job is to find that hidden order.

8 Jack Canfield: There are patterns and seasons in nature, there are patterns of the lunar cycles that affect people. I mean, I ve have nights where my whole family couldn t sleep as there was a full moon. Why is that? There s a pattern there and one that fascinates me the most is astrology. There are pattern as we move through the twelve houses, through the twelve months of the years, there are different things that occur, different possibilities that are more lined up. And as we understand these patterns, and co-operate with these patterns, then it s like you get to dance through life, rather than to be dragged through life. AS Nature repeats similar patterns, those similar patterns also affect our lives. Vlatko Vedral: And the power of science is really to see patterns and universal trends in what we observe. So for example, prior to Einstein s special theory of relativity, people thought about two different fundamental entities in the universe. There was matter which has mass if you like and there was light which would have energy. And of course Einstein s famous equation, E=MC 2, somehow says, well it is a mistake to think of these as two different entities. My equation now puts them together and relates mass to energy. Now I think that we could actually go deeper than that and in really making sense of all the observations that we see around us, the fundamental entity seems to be neither matter nor energy, but really information. So it is really some kind of structure information that is the root of all the observations that we make so far. And I would say it is this information somehow that gives us a sense of reality behind the whole thing. Harry Massey: But these patterns, they don t just exist in, in our physical reality, they also exist in time. And they therefore actually also exist in our own life patterns and also in the, in the big socioeconomic patterns that we all revolve in. And by understanding how some patterns will scale because they are supported by the universe, and how some patterns don t scale because they are not supported, we can make choices in our lives to choose the things that are supported by the universe to make our lives more easy and successful and also make a difference in the world.

9 Desmond Tutu: instead of sending out vibes of anger you were to become yourself this oasis of peace within yourself and then sending off ripples of that peace. David Hamilton: So we tend to live our lives in a way that reinforces that idea that we are not part of nature. But once we actually embrace the idea that we are and what we see inside even our bodies and the patterns are alive. And the overall patterns in nature, is that we are so much part of nature. And if we are not living in life s pattern, we tend to not live our lives in that kind of way. But when we do live our lives as part of nature, we become more in harmony with nature itself. Open up to.. the Journey of Understanding your World as the Enquirer Dalai Lama: We are part of the human society, any way one way we feel we are too small, but anyway we are part of the community, so, like us, I m sure there are many many millions and millions of people who actually are sharing same our views. But these people in many cases remain silent. So someone who make effort, and more voice, I think more and more people will join.

10 Richard Branson: What we are trying to do is to get a rallying cry of everyone who is working in businesses, which s running businesses to join together and get out there and just make a difference. Some people a small difference, some people a big difference. This informed knowledge helps us to make decisions to benefit not only ourselves but everyone around us.
