1 A Mock Trial based on The True Story of the Three Little Pigs

2 Instructions The class will be divided into three teams: the prosecution team, the defense team, and the legislative team. The prosecution and defense will be given a list of evidence that was discovered by the police. There is enough evidence provided that would work for either side. Your task is to review the evidence and come up with opening and closing statements based on evidence and a line of questioning that will prove the Al T. Wolf is either guilty or not guilty depending on your side. The prosecution needs to prove that A. Wolf murdered both Straw Pig and Stick Pig without a doubt.

3 Instructions The defense team must create doubt that A. Wolf is guilty. They do not need to prove that he is entirely innocent just that he might be! As a team, you will need to sift through the evidence and decide how to structure your arguments. The best way to do this is to string evidence together to create a theory. The legislative team will be creating newspaper articles to promote the court dates and well as completing persuasion maps to ensure that the jury can see both sides of the argument!

4 List of Characters Legislative Team: Judge- Decides which disputed facts (evidence) may be presented to the jury. Provides jury instructions and explains what the applicable law is to the jury. Keeps order in the court. Bailiff- Keeps order in the court. Responsible for making sure that the classroom is run like a true courtroom (i.e. "Everyone rise! The honorable Judge is presiding!) Assists judge. Cop- You responded to the call to the Brick Pig's house. When you arrived, you saw the wolf making a scene and took him to jail. Jury Members- Responsible for establishing pro and con chart saying why the evidence makes them guilty or innocent (5 Pros and 5 Cons)

You told him to "Go away!" but his sneeze was too powerful for your house as well. You ended up dead of a yet undetermined cause.

When the cops arrived, they arrested the wolf at your house. News reporter- You wrote about Al's alleged murder in the local newspaper. He claims that it was sensationalist, but you say it was just the facts.

Instead, you are now being asked to appear in court as a character witness for your grandson. Alexander T. Wolf- Claims to be going to get a cup of sugar for his Grandmother's birthday cake. He also claims to be feeling a little under the weather, so much so that he had to sneeze and blew the straw and stick pigs house down. He says they were dead already and didn't want the meat to spoil, so he ate them.

Begin to review all documents included in your team binder. You need to be familiar with how you will be graded, review the suggestions, and the roles. 3. Begin to review the evidence and brainstorm ideas on a piece of notebook paper. 1. Create your one page opening argument. Remember to use persuasive language. 2. Sort through the evidence to begin to put together your first two arguments on a separate sheet of paper. 3. Complete Witness Statements 1. Create your one page closing argument. 2. Make sure you have a list of questions ready to ask each of the other team's witnesses. 3. Make sure you are prepared for both the cross and direct examination. 4. Finish sorting through the evidence to finish up your arguments.

10 Crime Scene Evidence 1. Straw Pig and Stick pig were both eaten by Mr. Al Wolf. Since Mr. Wolf ate their bodies, there was no crime scene evidence of foul play besides what Mr. Wolf has admitted to the police. 2. There were straw and sticks found matted into Mr. Wolf s hair. It was covered in blood, but so was everything else around it. The doorknob to the brick house had several sets of fingerprints, including Al Wolf s, the policeman s, and both stick and straw pig s. 3. The coroner concluded that pigs had been dead before they were eaten, but without the body could not conclude a cause of death. The three brothers had recently taken out a life insurance policy that named the sole survivor as the beneficiary. 4. The ground around all three homes was covered in pig s blood, but it was also very sticky with sugar granules.

11 Crime Scene Evidence 5. The wolf s footprints were found all over on the sticky floor at the crime scene, along with the footprints of many other people. 6. There was no sign of a break-in at the Straw or Stick House. 7. The jars of sugar were found in the remains of both residences. 8. A bottle of NyQuil: Cold and Flu was found on the path between both houses. 9. The elastic was found to be broken on Mr. Wolf s pants when they were seized at the police station. Investigators concluded that they could not prove when this happened.

12 Other Evidence 10. Al. T. Wolf had a doctor s appointment the week before the crime took place. The doctor wrote him a prescription for allergy medicine, but requested a follow-up with an anger therapist. 11. Stick pig has a long history of being rude to his neighbors. In fact, his neighbor previously filed a complaint with the landlord accusing the stick pig of verbal harassment. 12. Inside Al s home, investigators found a half made cake batter. Its ingredients contained eggs, flour, and bunny ears. There was also an empty sugar package found at the scene. 13. Three days after the death of his two brothers, Brick Pig began selling a tellall novel about his life and how he was coping with their deaths. It was available on his website, The book contained information that was later published in newspaper articles by the reporter..
