A developer wants to create a theme park in a mountain valley that is classified as an area of outstanding natural beauty. In theory this means it can t be built on, but the area needs money. The local council is going to hold a meeting to decide whether or not to accept the project. Choose a role from the list below and prepare your arguments: local councillor, developer, environmentalist, farmer, local resident(s) 5. Write a guidebook entry Write a description of either a heavenly or a hellish place for a guidebook. Try to use a suitable style and try to include some of the words / phrases from Page 2 of 5

Timing: task 1: 15 minutes; task 2: 15 minutes; task 3: 20 minutes; task 4: 40 minutes; task 5: 30 minutes / homework total: 1 ½ 2 hours 2. 1c; 2h; 3e; 4g; 5a; 6d; 7b; 8f You can t visit the beach on Cedrae because it has been roped off to protect the ancient Egyptian sand. 3. Have students A and B do the dictionary work at the same time. The answers to A s missing letters are on B s sheet, and vice versa. 4. This activity is designed for three groups of five, but it s possible to remove or add local residents to suit larger or smaller classes. Allow 20 minutes for learners to prepare their roles and their arguments and 20 minutes for the meeting. It s a good idea to give out stand-up role cards, so that everyone can see who s who. During the preparation time you ll probably need to circulate, giving ideas and vocabulary. It s interesting (and motivating!) to have each group perform their role-play in front of the class. The other groups can note good points and errors as they listen. At the end, the whole class can compare the differences in outcomes for the different situations Page 5 of 5
