If UIS was to change its nickname, do you think it should... # Question Yes No No Opinion Mean be more in line with the new Leadership Lived logo? be more in line with the history of the Springfield community? represent the state of Illinois in some way? change to a more common type of nickname (ie: animal, character, etc)? Please nothing to do with Lincoln focus on strength, rather than friendliness something with dignity and history Something unique I think we need a nickname that ties to the Illiniwek of U of Illinois. That may be difficult, so if not I would suggest something related to Springfield being the capital such as the Capitals, Senators, etc. Lastly, hard not to go the Lincoln route the Railsplitters would be good. Or even Railers. Tough. Prairie Stars is really bad though symbol similiar to a sheild, where the UIS colors represent something such as silver. Silver represents truth, integrity, honest - pick one, then blue... then gold. what about white? athelitcs is wearing white as part of the colors. the eagles anything but prairie stars, damn!!!
4 The Blazing Stars be just as strange and unique as UIS and it's history something noble like "Illini" Sharks Michael Bloom please nothing about Lincoln! Chief Illini Bobcats Something that has a plural -- not something terrible like the Miami Heat or the Los Angeles Dynamo that has no plural. tyrannosaurus rex's something that ignites more school spirit just sounds stupid and no one knows what it is Stars Bulldogs or Running Rebels The Capitals Peregrine Falcon (or just Falcons for brevity's sake but use the peregrine as the model) sells merchandise more intimidating cardinals, or panthers. I don't know. I just don't like the current logo. Stars capitals abe lincoln CAPITALS be a? Prairie Fire Stars Identify with u of i No Change Something about deer Prairie Dogs Railsplitters Axemen "Where we like to destroy any connections our alumni have with our school" Please don't do this. 11 4. Please list below any specific suggestions on what should be the new nickname for the University of Illinois Springfield: Text Response The Prairie Thunder Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunters Sangamoster or Panthers Prairie Thunder! I like the idea of just changing the nickname to 'Stars.' It's different and noticeable without changing too much to completely change the dynamic of our university. Prairie Dawgs The Capitols Being from Springfield and the obvious political influence, I believe we should do something along those lines. I know there are mascots such as these in various other places, but I think we should play off of it somehow. If not the Honey Badgers it is! Pot Bellied Pigs Lincoln Lovers UIS Blue devils, The Capitols, Springfield sabers, or the Springfield knights The nickname/mascot should encompass the Springfield area. UIUC encompasses the state while UIC is inspired by it's location in Chicago. Springfield themes might include: Lincoln (of course), Senators, Statesmen, Capitals. Capitols The mascot should not be changed in any way. It's a part of the history of the school, and it makes us unique. something that has to do with Lincoln or Illinois--Cardinals (state bird), Capitals, Miners, farming/corn affiliated (cornhuskers) Honey Badgers, Bucks(we have tons of deer), Cornhuskers, UIS Sonics, Fighting Lincolns, UIS Riots, UIS Panthers The Honey Badgers I think we should go with something vicious...something...honey Badger Michael Bloom Honey Badger Something like a traditional university (e.g. Illinois is the Fighting Illini, SIUE are the Cougars, &c.) Honey Badgers Michael Bloom It should definitely NOT be more in line with the new "Leadership Lived" logo because that may not be around forever. Hidden Dragons Crouching Tigers GameCocks Whisker Biscuits Horny Toads
12 Stars The Capitols The more I think about it, the more I like Prairie Stars. Capitals or Angry Abe's Honey Badger keep it simple. no more cosmo. The pandas Stars, The UIS STARS, it can play off the old homecoming tagline WHERE STARS ARE BORN. I personally think we need to connect the mascot or nickname to what the pride of Springfield is: the capital city. I like the idea of the UIS Statesmen or Senators. I know that there is a high school possibly that already uses "senators." Either way, I do believe this needs to be changed even if only to generate some school spirit. Wondering why UIS cannot be more associated with University of Illinois - Champaign. At least share the same colors - orange and blue. Waves of Future Angry abes Angry Abes Huskies Capitals or just stars Capitals Hawks, Huskies, Egales Senators, something to do with Lincoln/history/a valuable piece of uis history Senators, Capitols, Bucks Hawks huskies etc Stars! Bulldog (or any dog for that matter) would go well with the current color scheme. A "Blue Devil" cross between arizona st. and duke. For fucks sake, anything is better than a stupid ass. Just don't change the name to something like the "Lincolns". I think the Prairie Stars is a sufficient name. Something more in tune with other schools. I had a hard enough time explaining what a "Shocker" was at Wichita State. Big and mean usually works for a maskot. Prairie Fire, Blaze Springfield Springs, something Abraham Lincoln related. Prairie Plowers, Uiuc rejects I like the Capitals, Rail Splitters, Prairie Dogs Lincoln has the railsplitters, which emphasizes Abraham Lincoln, so something along that line. Now that cougars have been seen in Morgan County, maybe cougars would be good. We have eagles in the spring, hawks year round, deer all over campus, and foxes. Prairie Fire, unless someone who survived a
13 prairie fire would be offended. Our nickname should incite fear in our opponents on the playing field. The Praire Stars seems weak and does not represent what we can grow as a campus into. The nickname should reflect our State and Springfield too. Urbana has the Illini and Chicago has the Dragons, Springfield should be an animal mythical or real. Fighting Lincolns, Senators, Big Blue Mink, Honest Abes, Fighting Lincolns, Politicians (that's pretty scary haha) University of Illinois Springfield Bobcats Wolves, Tornadoes, Lincoln Hats, Prairie Rangers, Bears, Springfield Snakes, Leadership Lions, Big Blue Dolphin, Big Blue Whales, UIS Bullets I think the lack of knowledge of what a Prairie Star is makes the mascot less empowering than it might be. I'd hope for something that has not only name recognition but with some meaning behind it; something that reflects the strengths and spirit of the campus - focus on leadership and social justice, a sense of community, something that the campus can identify with and that represents the school and the students. Owls for wisdom, fireflies for lighting the way to the future, Badgers for independence and tenacity, Beavers for building, creating and stability, Coyotes for resourcefulness would all be possible options. Any animal Michael Bloom Capitals, senators, Lincolns, beards, giraffes, anything besides a. It's not intimidating and I can't in way see how it was deemed a good idea for a mascot. I think something to do with Abraham Lincoln would be best. Lincoln was an animal lover and supposedly the first to pardon a turkey at Thanksgiving which was named Tom...so maybe the UIS Tom Turkeys? If you want to go a different route, he also loved cats and saved birds that had fallen from their nest. Senators UIS Capitals! The current UIS Prairie Star shirts at the bookstore are all ugly. Senators, Capitols No new nickname. Keep it the same. SangaMonsters maybe something that represents the state bird, state tree, or state animal or maybe something that goes along with Abraham Lincoln or the State Capitol. the UIS Hawks. Since there are many red tailed hawks flying above campus. UIS Mountain Lions UIS Flaming Hots UIS Blue Whales Prairie Fire - its a little more intimidating athletics-wise, truly represents the fact that we have prairie burns near campus quite often, keeps alumni connected to the old mascot by sticking with the prairie theme Perhaps after a tribe such as the Illini or even a Prairie Dog. Anything is better than Prairie Star. UIS Hawks or UIS Eagles. Because there are hawks and eagles that are in the central Illinois area.
14 UIS Stars UIS Patriots. Rockets, Capitols, Warriors, Titans it should be something more intimidating UIS Bulldogs Capitals, plain and simple. no social media, commercial, snake oil that attemps to follow currents trends. something that alligns with the currents colors so it appears that the new nickname was always true but was just unofficial. sometihng that reenforces the idea that a strong body of scientificly valid knowledge will prepare you for anything the future might hold. "aeternum inductae" (ever forward) Seekers, Venture, Suns, Smoke, Free-soilers, UIS Huskies Rail Splitters, Lincoln was a rail splitter and it is a little more intimidating than the Prairie Stars. Leopard, Cheetah, Lions, Griffins, Eagles UIS War Eagle Warriors The UIS Buffaloes. Because Buffalo once roamed here. Stars seems a little cheesy, we can do better. Prairie has no business being in there. Can you name the other universities in the United States on one hand that also reference flat grassland in their names? It's local, but boring. Any generic animal would be better, or perhaps a historical reference, like our friends at UIUC. Because we're in the U of I system, I think the nickname should reflect that connection. The Champaign- Urbana and Chicago campus are well known, so highlighting that UIS is involved with that could benefit the school. Porcupines Capitols Rail splitters -- a youthful Lincoln from Springfield comes to mind... Could branch out into other 19th c. railroad symbols, memorabilia, etc. Of course, as a UIUC grad, I'd like to see one or more campuses reembrace the honored CHIEF! Zombies Zombies UIS Stars; UIS Capitols; Prairie Fire, prairie storm, horseshoes. Statistic Value Total Responses 361
