Why Indigenous Literatures Matter North American Indigenous peoples have long been associated with vibrant oral traditions and storytelling, while their rich, deep and expansive literary forms of expression have received scant attention. This course, given by Daniel Justice, a citizen of the Cherokee Nation, and Professor of First Nations and Indigenous Studies at UBC, offers a broad survey of the diverse history of Indigenous writing in North America. You will learn how to navigate various genealogy websites during the hands on class and how to set up records for each family member. Sunshine Coast History This course will cover the supposed early visits of the Chinese in the 15 th century, the secretive 16 th century visits of Drake and Juan de Fuca, and well documented surveys of the Spanish and British in the 18 th, followed by 19 th century topics, including the important coast surveys of Capt. The history of the piano, demonstrated at the keyboard by concert pianist and teacher, Katherine Hume. 2. The guitar, an instrument with anything from four to eighteen strings, will be presented by Randeesh Goff, blending Caribbean and American lyrics and rhythms in a festive range of calypso, reggae, soul, and more. 3. Dialogue Circles: Toward Reconciliation This is a follow up to the Course Dialogue Circles Toward Reconciliation," held early this year. We ll examine the Truth and Reconciliation Commission s ninetyfour calls to action, and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, as the foundation and framework for reconciliation. We ll hear about changes and new perspectives being taught in Canadian schools as a result of the calls to action. Finally we ll try to gain an understanding of reconciliation challenges for the Shíshálh First Nation, asking the question: How shall we proceed?

Six years of war dramatically altered our country and resulted in the death of 45,000 young Canadians. The course will cover the major political, military, industrial and social happenings of the war from a Canadian perspective with a look at the people, politics and policies that shaped this transformative time in our history.
