2 What is DALI? DALI is an acronym and stands for Digital Addressable Lighting Interface. This means that each DALI device (ballast, sensor, luminaire etc) receives its individual DALI address on the DALI line It is an international standard that guarantees the exchangeability of dimmable ballasts from different manufacturers. With this standard you will now be able to offer your customer a full system solution (lamp ballast luminaire control unit lighting system). DALI is the ideal, simplified, digital way of communication tailored to the needs of present day lighting technology. DALI has been designed in a joint effort by all leading control equipment manufacturers with the idea of offering a standard to the lighting market that complies with all requirements.

3 DALI advantages Users have the following options when installing DALI - ballasts in their lighting system: Simple wiring of control lines (no group formation, no polarity) Control of individual units (individual addressing) or groups (group addressing) is possible A simultaneous control of all units is possible at any time (built-in initial operation function) through broadcast addressing) No interference of data communication is to be expected due to the simple data structure Control device status messages such as lamp fault, lamp ballasts Automatic search of control devices Simple formation of groups through flashing lamps Automatic and simultaneous dimming of all units when selecting a scene Operational tolerances of lamps can be stored as default values (for example for the purpose of energy savings maximum values can be set) Fading: adjustment of dimming speed Identification of unit type Options for emergency lighting can be chosen (selection of specific ballasts, dimming level) No need to switch on/off the external relay for the mains voltage (this is done by internal electronic components)

4 DALI has been defined for: a maximum of 64 single units (individual addresses) a maximum of 16 groups (group addresses) a maximum of 16 scenes (scene light values) The intelligence of the system has not been centralised for the purpose of defining the DALIinterface for control devices. This means that many of the set points and lighting values are stored within the individual ballast: Individual addresses Group assignments Light scene values Fading times Emergency lighting level (System Failure Level) Power On Level

5 DALI Wiring: Lead length Minimum lead diameter 0,5 mm2 - up to 100 meters 0,75 mm meters 1,5 mm2 - above 150 meters The maximum lead length between two connected systems must not exceed 300 meters. Serial wiring Star wiring Combination of both No termination resistors required

9 DALI as stand-alone: Switch dim from bell press switch This switch dim will control all the DALI devices on that loop. Uses 230v to dim (does not use the DALI protocol) This is switch dimmed via broadcast (all lights on the DALI line dims together. ) No DALI addressing done on this installation Not all DALI transformers has this feature!!!!!

10 DALI as stand-alone: From a DALI rotary dimmer A DALI rotary dimmer can be used on stand-alone installations Uses the DALI protocol to dim all DALI devices on that DALI line Uses DALI broadcast, no DALI addressing is needed in this installation

11 DALI as stand-alone: DALI via broadcast utilising a sensor A DALI Sensor can be used on stand-alone installations This is Master sensor Uses the DALI protocol to dim all DALI devices on that DALI line Uses DALI broadcast, no DALI addressing is needed in this installation Some sensors allow a 230v bellpress switch input on the sensor side, not the on DALI of the transformer
