UNIT 10 Reinforcing the New Picture At A Glance Once we have clearly defined the replacement pictures we want, to help us move to the new level of performance or behavior that we want, there is an easy method to reinforce the new picture and make it the dominant picture. We are going to use the same method we ve always used to maintain our current reality to create the new reality we want. Objectives By the time I am finished with this review, I will: reinvigorate my imagination to design my future. imprint I x V = R in my mind as a tool for reinforcing the changes I want. let go of simply admiring someone, to defining what it is I like about them, and then assimilating those qualities into myself. We are going to take ourselves into the future, using first-person, present-tense imagery. Lou Tice Alumni Review 1
Unit Concepts Belief(s): an emotional acceptance of a proposition, statement, or doctrine Forethought: the ability to foresee a possible future and plan for that future; unique to human beings I x V=R: Imagination times Vividness equals Reality (in the subconscious) I use my imagination to vividly see the future I want, and I repeat it over and over until it becomes my new reality. FUTURE PERFECT THINKING : Alumni Review 2 The Pacific Institute, Inc.
Reflective Questions 1. From my list of life areas where I want to shift to a new level of being, I define: Area Current Reality New picture of what I want (be specific!) 2. Whom do I admire? 3. Why? What qualities does this person possess that I would like to be a part of me? 4. What would I look like if I had those qualities? FUTURE PERFECT THINKING : Alumni Review 3 The Pacific Institute, Inc.
In Brief One of the tools naturally available to each of us is our imagination, or forethought, which seems to be unique to human beings. We can think forward to prepare for events in the future. We can plan for events in the future. And we can use this forethought to imagine a new picture of the future that we want to become our new current reality. Forethought allows us to project into the future, beyond today s current reality. This is a valuable piece of information, because it allows us a shortcut to our desired futures. There is a formula for this shortcut: I x V = R. I stands for Imagination. V stands for Vividness, or a clear picture with emotion. And, by repetition, we get R or Reality on the subconscious level. This ability is not something anybody invented. It is the way humans think naturally, and it is the way our current present reality was created. We are going to use this natural ability to envision ourselves at a higher level of performance, responding with the appropriate emotion and allowing us to move into ever-growing comfort zones. Now, we need to be able to see ourselves into this new level. It won t do any good to admire another person. This does not cause that gestalt inside us, that out of order that causes our creative subconscious to go to work to close the gap. We need to define what it is in others that we admire, then assimilate those qualities into ourselves. We must see ourselves having the new job. We need to see ourselves driving that new car, or see ourselves on vacation in that exotic location. Each of us is a creative genius inside. We will invent the way to achieving our goals. We will find the way. Remember the three dimensions of self-talk: words, pictures and emotions. We need to talk ourselves into our new futures and reinforce the pictures with I x V = R. FUTURE PERFECT THINKING : Alumni Review 4 The Pacific Institute, Inc.
Lou s StorY The Boxing Ring Back when I was teaching high school, I decided to put on a boxing match. These kids were going to fight each other anyway, so the school might as well make some money on it. (Those were different times ) I sold about 2000 tickets, and the fights were less than a week away. I still didn t have a boxing ring. I was teaching an adult night-school course and was still selling tickets. One guy said he d fought in the Pacific during the war and that he d like to come. Well, that was like the baby s cry to a mother to me! I asked him if he knew of anybody with a boxing ring. He said he had a friend in Kent, so after class, we called him. He didn t have a ring, but he had a friend in Auburn who did. It was 10:30 at night, but when you need a boxing ring as badly as I did, time didn t matter. I got a hold of this guy and he agreed to loan me the ring for $50. But I told him, no sense bringing the ring if he couldn t provide a referee. He said he d ref. Then I told him I needed boxing gloves too. He asked, What do you have? I told him the tickets sold and the kids to fight. So, if you have the bell they ring, the helmets and the stools to sit on, he d better bring them too! How many people would have given up finding the boxing ring and just given back the money? Boxing rings are trivia until you need them. Declare a new significance, and it is amazing what you will find. FUTURE PERFECT THINKING : Alumni Review 5 The Pacific Institute, Inc.
