4 the JOURNEY thejourneymag.com A Mind, Body and Soul Connection Summer2017 Issue 87 Words from the Publisher Sometimes during the course of teaching yoga classes, I will make the remark that babies and infants are like true yogis. My comparision is because their breathing is very deep and rythmic. As well as because they are pretty good at letting you know how they truly feel. My observations have shown that if they are happy the little yogis show it with laughter, or perhaps love and affection. On the flip side if they are upset you pretty much will know it as there isn t any hiding it from anyone. As we grow older, it seems, sometimes there is a tendency to cover up our feelings and thoughts. We hide behind the veil, so to speak. Maybe because we don t want to hurt others feelings, are told to be quiet or want to be politically correct. It is my belief that living a true yoga practice relates with living authenticity. Not pretense. I hear the catch line It s all good way too much. Sometimes it isn t good...actually sometimes - it downright sucks. That doesn t mean it will stay there, as we are in constant change. Hiding behind the veil and pretending nothing is wrong does a diservice to not only ones self, but to others. That is not to say we need to attack others if we are out of sorts, but it is a time of self inventory to get to the root of the problem we are living in. Its like the baby crying, usually their diaper needs to be changed, they are hungry or there is an outside stimulus that is making them uncomfortable. Again, find the root and the problem can be changed. Hiding behind a veil only prolongs the problem and does not give that opportunity. May we all lift our veils and live in our tue and authentic selves. Over an 18 year career with WTAE-TV Pittsburgh that began in 1998, Ms. Bell won 21 regional Emmy awards, the Edward R. Murrow award and other awards. The inspiring stories I loved to tell about ordinary people doing extraordinary things started to dry up. ~ 8 ~ My news managers didn t want those anymore. Instead, the 5 o clock broadcast became a nightly crime blotter with a parade of perp walks and horrible headlines no parent would welcome into their living room. And I started to really struggle. My husband thought I was depressed. I lost my appetite for most things and no longer wanted to see my friends. I was at a serious crossroads. And it was scary. The veil had been lifted. The fierce dedication to fact-finding and digging for the truth vanished. It s tough when you see something you care about so deeply change so dramatically. My relentless work studying journalism and ethics at the University of Colorado in Boulder and my master s in broadcasting at the University of Missouri never prepared me for the toilet bowl swirling of my industry s integrity. Gone was journalism s commitment to objectivity and honesty. The fierce dedication to fact-finding and digging for the truth vanished. I was doing a job that had abandoned its ethics. Everything I thought I loved and admired about telling stories and being on the news had changed. Like that. The veil had been lifted. Like a marriage ruined by a cheater. Like a friendship foiled by jealousy. The veil had been lifted. And then I got fired.

9 I was 46. News was all I knew! What would I tell my five sons? How would Michael, Jack, Ryan, Christopher and Bobby react? And more importantly how were my husband and I going to manage with only his income? What would I do now? I can answer all those questions today. Because I didn t just survive it. I OWNED it. I coveted every moment with my boys. I never missed a practice and certainly never a game. I made lunches and dinners. Did laundry and yard work. I played cards with them and helped with homework. I went to mass and snuggled with them. We tried new recipes, hiked into the woods and played corn hole. And for the first time in more than a decade I got to tuck my boys into bed every week night. We d say prayers and I d kiss them softly, breathing in the sweetness of their heads and gently running my lips across their soft cheeks. There was no 11 o clock newscast to race back to. No breathless promotions to shoot. No stories to cover. Just my husband and me and our five magnificent boys. And then it hit me. Thank goodness that veil had been lifted. As I look back on the last year it all makes sense. I get it now. I see. And I m so incredibly grateful for my life s new path. 11 Surviving the Lifting of the Veil by Rebekah Gamble Lifting the Veil can mean many things. In dance, the veil is used to slowly reveal the truth or the core of a person. Mediums might think of the veil as the barrier between the living and the dead. Shamans may think of the veil as the membrane between worlds. Psychologists might think of the veil as barriers within a person s own mind that, as they fall away, help a person have more control over themselves and how they interact in the world. Activists may talk about the veil as illusion or hypocrisy in the modern world. Veils in weddings developed from the tradition of women wearing their hair long at their weddings to symbolize their virginity but became a cultural symbol of spiritually protecting the bride on a day where her emotions make her more vulnerable. Regardless of what veil is used for, it refers to some sort of barrier between what is known and what is not known. To drop, pierce or lift the veil is to never be the same again. Intense changes usually follow, whether that be from insight or from transformation of a more intense kind. Perhaps this happens when someone decides to get very honest with themselves or with others. Perhaps this refers to a spiritual experience that changes them forever. It may even involve a crisis of physical illness or injury. Regardless, the ride after the change can be a tough one. What are some ways to better handle the stress of intense change? Clarity, perseverance, decisiveness, support and courage are some of the most needed personality skills when making intense changes or going through major life changes. When changes are positive but a person has spent a long time in abusive or bad situations it s not uncommon for a person without these characteristics to let the past rule the future rather than influence it. It is incredibly important to take time for clarity in life. Whether that is a formal meditation practice or simply taking a drive to think from time to time, self-reflection is vital. In alchemy, we set up mirrors near the stills because the devil does not like to see his own reflection. This helps keep our preparations pure. Honest reflection forces a person to face their own devil. Many times, once brought to the light of consciousness, shadows within a person fade or disappear entirely. Moonlight is generally more reflective in nature than sunlight and some find it beneficial to let their hair down and sit in the moonlight when pondering on reflective things. It is easy to be distracted by a person s feelings during reflection but repeatedly asking oneself what outcome is wanted and why until a decision is made is helpful. This conscious decision making prevents unconscious decisions ruled by bodily urges such as an out of control fight or flight reflex or the various cravings humans are prone to. Once committed to a course of action perseverance is needed. When times of action arise, it is necessary to remind the self why that decision was made and then follow through. ~ 11 ~ Once a sailor has decided which way he or she wishes to go, the motion of the wind and waves- the changing circumstances around the issue- are only relevant in order to make adjustments. They are no longer permitted to blow the ship off course because of the sailor s decisiveness, commitment and perseverance. Many times, once brought to the light of consciousness, shadows within a person fade or disappear entirely. To have such perseverance a person needs courage and support. Displaying courage, for some, can be as easy as deciding that they will or as easy as taking on a self-image of being a courageous person. When they shrink back they will ask themselves what sort of person they want to be, a courageous one or a cowardly one. Others find that spending time with roses, which have the energy signature of courage just before they bloom and help support courageous opening of the heart, or meditating on this image to be helpful in building this characteristic. Roses for consumption are best picked in the last twenty minutes before dawn on full moon nights when they are most potent. They should not be picked from near the road. Roses are excellent in salads, oil, tea, or butters and have no contraindications and are safe during pregnancy. It is best to tell the plant why you want to pick the roses beforehand, get permission from the plant, and thank it for its help. When this is done, usually less plant matter is needed for more powerful effects. There comes a time in each person s life where they realize they have reached the end of their ability and they need assistance, especially after or during major changes. Not everyone has a human support system. Though this is certainly useful for some it is not necessary for victory in overcoming and integrating life s challenges and changes. Prayer, personal ritual, meditation, and time in nature are all ways the spiritual world can be a source of strength and support. Those with unreliable human support systems should create habits that include these resources so that they will have more resilience when challenges arise. Often, if a person waits until the challenge is present it is too late to start the habits. Carrying on such habitual fortitude-building behaviors in times of peace also creates a spiritual momentum that can help a person move through challenges more directly and swiftly than if they are not performed consistently.

12 The key to effective habits is they are enjoyable most of the time and they create a sense of connection to the spiritual. What makes a practice powerful is the relationship that s developed rather than a show or an ego trip. The veil lifts from time to time. New worlds are experienced, a new self occurs. By applying these suggestions regularly before crisis, you can be ready for those times and experience them fully and more safely. Blessings on your path. 13 Removing Our Mask By Amanda Bibbo We all wear masks at one time or another in our lives. Some always have theirs on; while some rarely do. Both men and woman alike. Some women wear makeup (even while they sleep) and some men wear toupees. What are we hiding from? Our truth? What could be so bad about that? What are we fearful of? Can t we be confident in our own skin? I must admit, I may have been wearing a mask, on and on throughout my life, as I am still self-discovering all the wonderful gifts I possess. Once I think I know it all and gain confidence in a certain area of my life I quickly realize how much more I must grow. Our egos love to play silly games on us. So, again, I dig deeper. What am I hiding from, fearful of, or ashamed of? How do I heal and conquer? For me to grow I must help others grow. How do I do this? This has been my quest for the past several months. I decided that I wanted to be a conduit of positivity to others. Helping others is in my nature (so much so that I often forget about taking care of myself). Why can t I do both? Well, I discovered, I could! I can really have the best of both worlds. If I believe and set my intentions (write it down), I will not only heal myself, I will heal those whom I love. This makes me think of the quote that is said in various ways, To lift others, we must first lift ourselves. So, I began. I wrote down a list of items that I desired in my life. Specific desires that I thought would make me feel more confident and less fearful, areas I lacked in my current life. Areas that I had my blinders on because I had bad misconceptions about or failed previously at them. Areas that I believed were too time consuming to learn. I needed again to shift my perspective and rewrite my LLP (Living Life Plan). I wanted to transfer all of my mistakes into miracles for me and for those who are always loving and supporting me unconditionally. A few brainstorming questions I asked were the following: What are my fears? Where do I lack? What do I need to be more successful? What really are my goals and how do I achieve them? Where do I want to be in 1, 5 or 10 years? I focused on the 6 life categories (sometimes referred to as the shopping list ) on how to be well balanced: wealth/financial, relationship, career, self, health and spirit. My next task, was to go down my list and pair 1 or 2 people to each area of life I needed to work on, keeping in mind their desires. I did NOT share my list with any of these folks, nor with anyone else. It was private. After all, it is part of my new LLP! I didn t want to hurt any of their feelings in any way. I didn t know the outcome. It was a little test for myself and they were going to reap the benefits. ~ 13 ~ Next to each area, I wrote what I wanted to improve for myself specifically. Then I paired it up with an individual. Then I wrote down the steps I needed to take to help that person (don t panic if you don t have something written down for each person/ area trust that it will come to you when you least expect it.) Below is a short example: 1 year goals: Relationship: I need to work on my relationship with Aunt Sally. We are always butting heads and it is uncomfort able at family gatherings. (My friend, Mary, has been in a troubled marriage for the past few years. Maybe I can introduce new methods of thinking by giving her personality tests or articles to read, in hopes to change her perspective to become more positive and empowered no matter the outcome. In turn, I can use these tools to shift my perspective to help with my relationship with Aunt Sally.) Career: My goal is doing what I LOVE for a living and get paid for it! No more 9-5. (My cousin Tommy works at a dead-end job even though he is so talented. What can I do to support him to help him do what he loves and get paid for it? Maybe I can send him articles, take him to career fairs or invite him to a psychic fair hoping he receives enlightening messages from his angels and/or the universe.) Wealth/Financial: My goal is to save at least $10,000 this year. I have struggled with this as an adult. It s time for me to stop living in la-la-land and come to reality. (My brother, Nolan, is just graduating college and it would be a great idea to help him get his finances on track while I do mine. I am going to pass him some articles about student loans and I read up about them myself.) Where do I want to be in 1, 5 or 10 years? Don t be afraid to try this. Be open and optimistic for change. Don t judge your list or who you paired up with on your list. Just trust it is all divinely inspired. Miracles are wonderful to witness because they always tell the truth. Nothing is more raw and beautiful than the truth. At times, it may hurt, but in the long run it is a gift to see and hear. Something like this (the exercise above) takes time and patience. It s amazing when you finally go back to your list after a few weeks and you realize, whoa! I totally forgot, Mary has been reading her own books and her spirit has really lifted, therefore she has lifted me and my relationship with my Aunt. I really dug down and tried to see from her point of view.

14 How else can we heal? It s comforting to hear real-life people telling their real-life challenges and fears and how they overcame them. I am hoping that I did just that. It always helps to know you are never alone. The person standing right behind you in the checkout line at the grocery could be the very person that needs to hear your story. Don t be ashamed. Why do we want to keep our masks on? So many reasons, unique to each of us. It could be from a past life, it could be from a traumatic event, it could be as simple as not feeling loved while we were a child. However, it is up to you, and only you, to discover why you are hiding behind your veil. Let s remove our masks together! 23 Five Questions for Wendy Bell 1) Who was your greatest role model or influence when you were growing up? My father. I learned charity, humility and honor from my dad. My parents got my sister and me involved in philanthropy when we were very young, and it was through him that I discovered my love of giving. I remember waking up at 2 or 3 in the morning and seeing the light on in the kitchen. It was my father, sitting alone at the kitchen table, with papers spread out all over the place. He helped all our neighbors with life insurance and financial planning and did so gratis. The peace of mind his knowledge and kind-speaking ways gave so many people hit home for me. This whole concept of giving back or paying it forward was alive and well in my home, well before Oprah made it popular. 2) If you had the opportunity, what 3 people would you want to have a conversation with (alive or not) and what would be the first question you would ask them? I d want to talk with my friend Neil Alexander who lost his 3-year battle with ALS in I watched that dreadful disease ravage is body and ultimately steal his breath. I would want to know if, when he got to heaven, God explained to him why he was made to suffer so greatly. I d want to chat with Morgan Freeman. I would close my eyes and listen to his delicious voice tell me stories about travel and culture. Shoot. He could tell me how to boil and egg and I would be completely enraptured with his everything. And I d really like to chat with Shel Silverstein, one of my favorite authors. I d like to sit at a table with him and hear about the motivation behind his many delightful books and watch as he doodles the drawings that accompany so many of his poems. To be a talented writer is a tremendous gift. But to write AND create the drawings that accompany your ideas is incredible! 3) If you could go back in time to any era, when would it be and why? I d like to live in the 50s for a short while. My parents were teenagers then moms stayed home to raise their children, men wore suits and hats (even to sporting events) and there was this civility. This idea of decency and respect. Children obeyed. Families spent time together. There were no electronic distractions. The was no offensive music. I d like to experience that. Even for a day. 4) What is the most important quality you hope to instill in your children? I like to teach my five sons that anything is possible. That if they believe in it, they can achieve it. That no dream is beyond their grasp. And that the worst feeling in the world is regret. Woulda. Coulda. Shoulda. I d rather they fail than be too afraid to try. 5) Do you believe there is fake news? I know there is fake news. And I know America is sick of it.
