6 travel tips TIPS FOR TOURISTS The climate in Puducherry is generally humid as it is located in the coastal areas of South India. The climate is mostly warm and plain cottons or cotton /synthetic blends are the most practical and the coolest in summer. It s best to avoid thick clothes that don t breathe. In the summer, a hat and sunglasses are recommended for protection from the harsh sun. When travelling during monsoons, a collapsible umbrella comes handy. Taxi and Auto drivers don t expect tips but fare is not uniform. If they go through a great deal of trouble to get to your destination, they may ask tips about Rs per day, depending on the distance travelled. During the winter months, sweaters and light jackets are required. Trekkers and travellers going on any outdoor adventure should bring a daypack that will hold a sweater, camera, a water bottle. A good pair of binoculars and sunglasses that block out ultraviolet rays are advised. Also carry strong sun block, sewing kit, premoistened towelettes, and pocketknife with can opener, lock and key for each duffel or bag, high-power impact-resistant flashlight, spare batteries (unless they re a popular size). Electronic Gadgets for electric-powered equipment bring a converter and an adapter. The electrical current in India is 220 volts, 50 cycles alternating current (AC), wall outlets take plugs with two round prongs. TIPPING IN INDIA In most of the restaurants or large hotels, a 10% service charge is often added to bills. In smaller places, where tipping is optional, you need only tip a few rupees, not a percentage of your bill. Most major hotels include a service charge of 10%. Waiters, room service boys, housekeepers, porters, and doormen all expect to be tipped. You should pay railroad porters Rs.5 to 10 per bag, depending on the weight. Be sure to set the rate before you let him take your bags. HEALTH PRECAUTIONS AND OTHER RELATED INFORMATION Foreign tourists should carry their Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate conforming to International Health Regulation, if they originate or are transiting through Yellow Fever endemic countries. Health risks Cholera, dengue fever, dysentery, hepatitis, malaria, meningitis (trekking areas only) and typhoid. Travellers with respiratory ailments may wish to take precautionary measures. Health Certificate Citizens and travellers coming from the United States, Canada, or the United Kingdom, do not require any vaccination certificate or inoculations. Though normally an International Health Certificate is not asked for by immigration officials, it s better to carry one. It contains valuable information in case one needs medical attention. VACCINATIONS As a precautionary measure vaccination against Hepatitis B is recommended, if staying for a longer duration. To avoid Malaria, Dengue, carrying mosquito repellents, nets, clothes covering the body and using sprays against insects in rooms is sufficient. A first aid kit carrying adhesive bandages, thermometer, water-purification tablets, antibiotics, antiseptic creams and mosquito repellents is advisable. Drinking only mineral or boiled water curbs down the chances of stomach ailments, thus whenever going out carrying a bottle always comes handy. This will also keep dehydration at bay. If in doubt, one can take a salt-sugar solution 1/2 tsp. salt and 4 tbsp. sugar in one litre of water to rehydrate. AT EATING JOINTS Though sticking to a vegetarian diet is recommended, eating only thoroughly cooked meat is advisable. Avoid Pork Products, Fried food from vendors, Dishes using excessive oil, Road Side Restaurants SAFETY PRECAUTIONS AND EMERGENCY INFORMATION Never leave an unlocked suitcase in a hotel room. Never leave suitcases unattended on airports or train stations. Women travelling alone should never get into a taxi or rickshaw if there s a second man accompanying the driver. Women should also chain lock their door when they are in their hotel room. Everyone should be alert in crowds for pickpockets. Wear a money belt. One should be careful while using his or her credit cards. TIPS TO REMEMBER WHILE VISITING RELIGIOUS MONUMENTS Visiting a religious monument demands respect. With all religions, removing shoes is necessary before entering a shrine, though sometimes cloth overshoes are provided for a small charge. Drinking alcoholic beverages on the premises or speaking in a raised voice is not permissible. Some structures are off-limits to visitors who do not practice the faith. One should not try to force or bribe to enter such places. Be sure to cover your head when you enter a mosque. When you enter a mosque, you are supposed to step right foot first into the courtyard. To enter a holy shrine, women should wear a long skirt, a dress, or trousers.. Travel in a Muslim community calls for even more discretion. Women should consider wearing a salwar kameez, or loose pants and long blouse. In some Hindu and Jain temples all leather products inside a shrine like shoes, belts, handbags, camera cases etc. are prohibited. Many temples also expect visitors to purify themselves by washing their hands and feet under a tap or tank available there before entering. No visitor in a Sikh Gurudwara should keep his feet pointing towards the Holy Book or step over any one sitting in prayer or meditation. 12 attractions The aesthetic town of Pondicherry represents the confluence of history and geography, of antiquity and modernity. GANDHI MANDAPAM is Asia s biggest Gandhi Statue. Mahatma Gandhi is surrounded by eight granite pillars, which were brought from Gingee, a fort 70kms from Puducherry. Located across the street from Gandhi statue is the statue of Jawaharlal Nehru. It is also flanked by four pillars from Gingee. Location: On the Beach Road. 19TH CENTURY LIGHT HOUSE is still one of Pondicherry s prime tourist attractions. It was built in the year Location: On Goubert Avenue, opposite the Gandhi Statue. DUPLEIX was Pondicherry s most illustrious French Governor. The French Government commissioned his Statue at Pondy to honor him. Location: At the Southern end of the beach overlooking the Children s park. AMBEDKAR MANI MANDAPAM is built in remembrance of Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar. He was the chief architect of the Indian Constitution. He has been honoured with the Bharat Ratna, India s highest civilian award. Visit the Monument to know more about his achievements. Location: On the Beach Road The PLACE DE GOUVERNEMENT or the Government Square includes the XVIII Century Palais du Gouverneur (now Raj Nivas) the old Tribunal now housing the Legislative Assembly, the Cercle de Pondicherry, the Ashram dining hall and the UCO Bank all lined up to form the square. Exquisitely carved monolithic pillars adorn the palace. These pillars, ascribed to the XVII Century were brought from Gingee to Pondicherry after the capture of its fort in FRENCH WAR MEMORIAL is a monument for soldiers who lost their lives in the First World War. Locaton: on Goubert Avenue. Celebration: On Bastille Day, 14th July, the Memorial is well lit and is worth visiting. AAYI MANDAPAM was built in 16th century in Greco Roman architectural style during the reign of Napoleon III, the emperor of France, commemorating a 16th century courtesan named Aayi. It is surrounded by many stately buildings like Raj Nivas, Museum, Pondicherry Art Gallery etc. Location: Government park and opposite Raj Nivas. Timing: 6am to 9pm. Entry: Free. MUSEUM has an excellent gallery with sculptures and the remains of archealogical finds from the Arikamedu Roman settlement. One can go through the legendary French colonial details in the history section of the museum. Location: Rue Saint Louis. Timing: 9.40am to 1pm and 2pm to 5.20pm. Entry: Adult - 10Rs., Child - 5Rs., Foreigners-50 Rs. Monday Holiday. BHARATHIDASAN MEMORIAL displays the eminent son of the soil poet Bharathidasan, known as Paventhar or King of Songs. Facing Cercle de Pondicherry is his statue, while the house he lived in - situated at 95, Perumal Koil Street - has been converted into a memorial. PROMENADE BEACH and the monuments along its length, speak of the rich heritage of Pondicherry. Some of the important monuments of the city are located next to its shores. They include the statues of Mahatma Gandhi, Joan of Arc, Dupleix and the French War Memorial etc. A lot of information pertaining to Pondicherry can be acquired through the tourism information centre on the beach road. BHARATHI PARK also called the Government Park is surrounded by some of the most prestigious government buildings like the Lt. Governor s Palace, the Legislative Assembly, Government Hospital, Ashram dining room, the Cercle de Pondicherry private club etc. The park surrounds the Aayi Mandapam. SERINITY BEACH is a few kms from the city, on the ECR, and characterizes the essences of its name. It has a very calm and serene atmosphere. The sands and the waters are the cleanest ones around Pondicherry. CHUNNAMBAR houses the famous PTDC boat house and is located on the Cuddalore main road. The beach is extremely attractive as the sands are clean and water clear. The beach offers a variety of water sport activities. BOTANICAL GARDEN planned by C.S. Perrotet in 1826, has a good collection of exotic flowering plants from India and abroad. The garden was started in 1826 by the French colonists on an experimental basis to analyze the crops that could be cultivated in the region. Location: Just off the west entrance of the South Boulevard & close to old City Bus Stand. SACRED HEART CHURCH is the work of French missionaries. The interiorsk of the Church are a magnificient combination of Indo- European architecture. Location: 132, Sacred Heart Church, Subbaiah Salai, Pondy 01. P / E. tomant12@satyam.net.in W. THE EGLISE DE NOTRE DAME DES ANGES is also known as Church of the Capuchines. The locals call it Caps Church and also Pink Church because of the color. It was built in the year Prayers are still conducted here in French. Location: Rue Dumas. MANUKULAR VINAYAGAR TEMPLE is dedicated to Lord Ganesh. The temple is assumed to be constructed nearly 5 centureis back. Location: Manakular Vinayagar Koil St (behind Raj Niwas). Contact: Dharshanam Timing: 5.45am to 12.30pm & 4pm to 9.30pm. Abishegam Time: 6.30am and 11am (Mon to Thu). AUROBINDO ASHRAM was founded in The dynamic character of the ashram community reflects the life-affirming aim of Sri Aurobindo s Yoga. Location: Rue de la Marine. Web. ashram.org. Time: 7am-10pm. AUROVILLE is a small village 30 mins drive from Pondy on the ECR towards Chennai. The Matrimandir is the finest attraction of Auroville. Entry passes can be obtained for free at Auroville Visitors Centre, after watching a short introductory video on the Matrimandir. Passes are issued from : 9.30am to 1.00pm and 1.30pm to 4.00pm. Just 30 mins drive from Pondicherry will bring you to Arikamedu. The place is historically significiant, as recent excavations at some sites have unearthed Roman coins and wine jars establishing it as the earliest Indo-Roman trading centre (around 2nd century AD). A few kms further is Chunnambar, the PTDC boat house. There is a resort and restaurant to facilitate tourists. Boating here is a wonderful experience as a short cruise away is the sand bar that will make you feel as if you are on a remote island. WEST 15kms away from Pondicherry is Ousteri Lake, the largest fresh water body in the region. Ousteri has been recognized as one of the important Wetlands of Asia by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN). Climb onto the rocks and continue southwards until the pier for some great photo opportunities THINGS TO DO IN PONDY Pondicherry is a small town whose list of attractions can be 'covered' in 2 days if necessary. However you might want to look beyond the guidebooks and discover a side of Pondi which goes well beyond the French architecture and quaint streets. 1. For starters, walk the 1.5 km promenade stretch by night which is well-lit and vehicle-free. Here is your chance to spot the renowned French General Monsieur Dupleix, Indian patriots - Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, and the demure Joan of Arc under the dreamy orange streetlights. Catch a glimpse of the Pondicherry Secretariat, the War Memorial and other attractions. Along the way, you could stop by for a coffee at the 24-hour seafacing Le Cafe. 2. Go clothes shopping at the street stalls at the Mission Street-Nehru Street cutting. Prices can be as low as Rs. 100, some prices marked. Bargain hard if they're not marked. If you don't mind factory rejects with small glitches, then the styles and cuts of some pieces on display will surprise you. 3. Visit the Shri Aurobindo Paper Factory, a hidden gem that will prove to be educative and fun. Don't miss out on the stunning ranges of gift wrapping paper; some of them are truly cosmic with 3-imensional, surreal textures. Lovely, leafy gardens to stroll through too. 4. Walk through the Tamil quarter that lies on the other side of the canal. A strange mélange of French and typically Tamil architecture is quite apparent with the ground floors displaying Tamil elements and the top floors, French elements. If you look closely, you will notice that most temples manifest similar architecture - the pot-bellied, moustached idol of man perched along the corners of the roof. 5. Pondicherry's promenade doesn't end at Mr. Dupleix's statue. Climb onto the rocks and continue southwards until the pier for some great photo opportunities. If you happen to be in Pondi during the full moon, capitalize on this chance to watch a spectacular moonrise above the Bay of Bengal. 6. Weave your way through the mazes of the local Goubert Market where you could spot a meter-long, beady-eyed fish sitting prettily at the feet of a fisher-woman. This place is a riot of colors, sounds, smells and flavors, and a great place to shop for fresh fruit. 7. Sunday evenings could mean a free film screening at the Alliance Française auditorium so check with them. Sunday's are also a great chance to experience some serious shopping frenzy of locals thronging the weekly market along M.G. Road. 8. Foodies can indulge in a bout of "foodhopping" along Mission Street. Start with Baker Street that's close to the south end of Mission Street and then work your way past Choco La, Juice Wagon, Surgurus, Don Giovanni, Cafe xtasi and others. 9. Finally, just pick up a bike from the bike rental shops at Mission Street (close to the temple). Head down to the Bodhi Beach which is a few kilometers away, on the same route to Auroville but closer. On a good day, you might just bump into a bunch of surfers; some with their surfboards and others who prefer 'body-surfing'.
