1 th 7 t SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIIPHANY COMMENTARY Readings: Levitius 19:1-2, 17-18, Psalm 103:104, 8, 10, Corinthians 3:16-23, Matthew 5:38-48 We are called to the holiness of God. That is the extraordinary claim made in both the First Reading and Gospel this Sunday. Yet how is possible that we can be perfect as our Father in heaven is perfect? Jesus explains that we must be imitators of God as his beloved children (Eph. 5:1 2). As God does, we must love without limit with a love that does not distinguish between friend and foe, overcoming evil with good (see Rom. 12:21). Jesus himself, in his Passion and death, gave us the perfect example of the love that we are called to. He offered no resistance to the evil even though he could have commanded twelve legions of angels to fight alongside him. He offered his face to be struck and spit upon. He allowed his garments to be stripped from him. He marched as his enemies compelled him to the Place of the Skull. On the cross he prayed for those who persecuted him (see Matt. 26:53 54, 67; 27:28, 32; Luke 23:34). In all this he showed himself to be the perfect Son of God. By his grace, and through our imitation of him, he promises that we too can become children of our heavenly Father. God does not deal with us as we deserve, as we sing in this week s Psalm. He loves us with a Father s love. He saves us from ruin. He forgives our transgressions. He loved us even when we had made ourselves his enemies through our sinfulness. While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us (see Rom. 5:8). We have been bought with the price of the blood of God s only Son (see 1 Cor. 6:20). We belong to Christ now, as St. Paul says in this week s Epistle. By our baptism, we have been made temples of his Holy Spirit. And we have been saved to share in his holiness and perfection. So let us glorify him by our lives lived in his service, loving as he loves. 6 BLACK HISTORY MOMENT Featuring Charles Drew Drew was born in 1904 into an African-American middle-class family in Washington, D.C. His father, Richard, was a carpet layer and his mother, Nora Burrell, was a teacher. Drew and his siblings grew up in D. C. s Foggy Bottom neighborhood and he graduated from Dunbar High School in Drew won an athletics scholarship to Amherst College in Massachusetts, where he graduated in An outstanding athlete at Amherst, Drew also joined Omega Psi Phi fraternity. He attended medical school at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, receiving his MDCM in 1933, and ranked 2nd in his class of 127 students. A few years later, Drew did graduate work at Columbia University, where he earned his Doctor of Medical Science degree, becoming the first African American to do so. In 1941, Drew's distinction in his profession was recognized when he became the first African- American surgeon selected to serve as an examiner on the American Board of Surgery. Drew had a lengthy research and teaching career and became a chief surgeon. Blood plasma for British project In late 1940, before the U.S. entered World War II and just after earning his doctorate, Drew was recruited by John Scudder to help set up and administer an early prototype program for blood storage and preservation. He was to collect, test, and transport large quantities of blood plasma for distribution in the United Kingdom Drew went to New York City as the medical director of the United States' Blood for Britain project. The Blood for Britain project was a project to aid British soldiers and civilians by giving U.S. blood to the United Kingdom. Drew started what would be later known as bloodmobiles, which were trucks containing refrigerators of stored blood; this allowed for greater mobility in terms of transportation as well as prospective donations. Drew created a central location for the blood collection process where donors could go to give blood. He made sure all blood plasma was tested before it was shipped out. He ensured that only skilled personnel handled blood plasma to avoid the possibility of contamination. The Blood for Britain program operated successfully for five months, with total collections of almost 15,000 people donating blood, and with over 5,500 vials of blood plasma. As a result, the Blood Transfusion Betterment Association applauded Drew for his work. Out of his work came the American Red Cross Blood Bank. -6- BLACK HISTORY MONTH Visit our display in the lower level Fellowship Hall to learn about: Paul Cuffe, Frederick Douglass, Bill Pickett, Thomas Dorsey, Henry McNeal Turner, Lucille Clifton, Gwendolyn Brooks, Gordon Parks, Kenneth Clark, Maya Angelou, and many more -7-
