Juneteenth On June 19, 1865, The union General Gordon Granger rode into Galveston, TX to inform the inhabitants the Civil War had ended, two months prior. Although the Emancipation Proclamation, had been signed two and a half years prior, Granger s General Order Number 3 was what finally freed the last 250,000 slaves whose bondage was due to the minimal Union presence in the region. June 19th, or better known as Juneteenth, has become the African-American addendum to our national Independence Day. The Emancipation Proclamation did not render emancipation and the portrayal of Independence Day ignores the existence of slavery. Therefore, Juneteenth promotes the commemoration of African American freedom.
