10 th Sunday After Pentecost July 26 & 29, 2018 St. John s Ev. Lutheran Church Stand Opening Hymn 492 Son of God, Eternal Savior 2
Come, Oh, Come, Let Us Sing to the Lord Congregation sings all Be Seated 3
Old Testament Reading Exodus 24:3-11 (NIV) 3 When Moses went and told the people all the LORD s words and laws, they responded with one voice, Everything the LORD has said we will do. 4 Moses then wrote down everything the LORD had said. He got up early the next morning and built an altar at the foot of the mountain and set up twelve stone pillars representing the twelve tribes of Israel. 5 Then he sent young Israelite men, and they offered burnt offerings and sacrificed young bulls as fellowship offerings to the LORD. 6 Moses took half of the blood and put it in bowls, and the other half he splashed against the altar. 7 Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read it to the people. They responded, We will do everything the LORD has said; we will obey. 8 Moses then took the blood, sprinkled it on the people and said, This is the blood of the covenant that the LORD has made with you in accordance with all these words. 9 Moses and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and the seventy elders of Israel went up 10 and saw the God of Israel. Under his feet was something like a pavement made of lapis lazuli, as bright blue as the sky. 11 But God did not raise his hand against these leaders of the Israelites; they saw God, and they ate and drank. Psalm 63 Congregations sings the refrain. Soloist sings the verses. [C] Refrain 4
1. O God, you are my God; for you I long; for you my soul is thirsting. My body pines for you like a dry, weary land without water. So I gaze on you in the sanctuary to see your strength and your glory. [C] Refrain 2. For your love is better than life, my lips will speak your praise. So I will bless you all my life, in your name I will lift up my hands. My soul shall be filled as with a banquet; my mouth shall praise you with joy. [C] Refrain 3. On my bed I remember you. On you I muse through the night, for you have been my help; in the shadow of your wings I rejoice. My soul clings to you; your right hand holds me fast. [C] Refrain Gospel Reading John 6:1-15 (EHV) After this, Jesus crossed over to the other side of the Sea of Galilee (or Tiberias). 2 A large crowd followed him because they saw the miraculous signs he was performing on those who were sick. 3 Jesus went up on the hillside and sat down there with his disciples. 4 The Jewish Passover Festival was near. 5 When Jesus looked up and saw a huge crowd coming toward him, he asked Philip, Where can we buy bread for these people to eat? 6 But Jesus was saying this to test him, for he himself knew what he was going to do. 7 Philip answered him, Two hundred denarii worth of bread would not be enough for each of them to have just a little. 8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter s brother, said to him, 9 There s a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what is that for so many people? 5
10 Jesus said, Have the people sit down. There was plenty of grass in that place, so they sat down. There were about five thousand men. 11 Then Jesus took the loaves and, after giving thanks, he distributed pieces to those who were seated. He also did the same with the fish as much as they wanted. 12 When the people were full, he told his disciples, Gather the pieces that are left over so that nothing is wasted. 13 So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with pieces from the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten. 14 When the people saw the miraculous sign Jesus did, they said, This really is the Prophet who is coming into the world. 15 When Jesus realized that they intended to come and take him by force to make him king, he withdrew again to the mountain by himself. Hymn 566 We All Are One in Mission Sermon Ephesians 4:1 7, (EHV) One Body, One Goal As a prisoner in the Lord, therefore, I urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called. 2 Live with all humility, gentleness, and patience, bearing with one another in love. 3 Make every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in the one hope of your calling. 5 There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all, and through all, and in us all. 7 But to each one of us grace was given, according to the measure of the gift from Christ. 11 He himself gave the apostles, as well as the prophets, as well as the evangelists, as well as the pastors and teachers, 12 for the purpose of training the saints for the work of serving, in order to build up the body of Christ. 13 This is to continue until we all reach unity in the faith and knowledge of the Son of God, resulting in a mature man with a stature reaching to the measure of the fullness of Christ. 14 The goal is that we would no longer be little children, tossed by the waves and blown around by every wind of 6
teaching, when people use tricks and invent clever ways to lead us astray. 15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we would in all things grow up into Christ, who is the head. 16 From him the whole body, being joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows in accordance with Christ s activity when he measured out each individual part. He causes the growth of the body so that it builds itself up in love. Stand 7

Therefore, with all the saints on earth and hosts of heaven, we praise your holy name and join their glorious song: Holy, Holy, Holy Melody from CW474, Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus 1. M: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take and eat; this is my (+) body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink from it, all of you; this is my (+) blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me. The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: Amen. BE SEATED 10

Announcements Pioneers: We are looking to see what the interest is in restarting our Pioneer program. We have objected to Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts and Pioneers is a program our church body has offered for nearly 70 years as an alternative. The program aims at development and can include all kind of activities and skill-building in areas like camping, hiking, backpacking, bicycling, archery, pinewood derby, etc. We can tailor the program as to frequency of meetings/outings based on those interested (It could be separate programs for Boy Pioneers and Girl Pioneers or a joint program. It could be a really active program, like twice a month, or a less frequent thing like a couple of activities a year.) For now, we d like to see what there is for interest from the boys and girls in our congregation (2 nd Grade 8 th grade) and from teens/parents if they would like to be helpers/leaders. If you would like to be in Pioneers in some capacity, please sign up in the narthex. There is a sheet for children and one for teens/adults. WELS Night at Miller Park: Reminder for those attending, payment is now due and may be dropped off in the church office on or before July 29 th. Thank you! Pastor Schupmann s Call: Pastor Schupmann has received a divine call to serve at St. Matthew s Lutheran Church of Niles Illinois. Pastor and his family ask that you keep them in your prayers over the next few weeks as he deliberates where best to serve the Lord either in Dodge County or Niles Illinois. 15 Dear Members, And in a whirlwind it was over. No, our Horicon Grand Opening wasn t blown away by the wind, though it was windy, nor was it rained out, though heavy rain was just miles to our east; as usual events like this come and go quickly though weeks of planning go into them. Solid planning, many helping hands, great food and much enthusiasm helped to make it a success. I really can t begin to name names of those who helped cook, plan, execute and takedown for the event, though I will say I leaned on the Justmann s, Wasmund s and my wife quite a lot, many, many thanks to all. Attendance at the Church Service was right around 100 with possible new members in attendance, like has been the case every week before, a great trend for sure. I really can t say how many were at the get together itself, but 125 seems reasonable. We also cannot overlook the work of the Horicon Committee, whose efforts through the work of the Holy Spirit bore the fruit of this second campus in Horicon, many thanks to them as well. Even though the grand opening as come and gone, our Horicon Ministry has just begun and we cannot lose our enthusiasm for outreach and evangelism, whether it be in Horicon, Juneau or across the seas. God s Blessing To All, Tim Weisensel Chairman 15
