2 Ash Wednesday March 6, 2019 Thank you for being with us to begin our journey to the cross with our Savior. If you need anything during the service, please speak with an usher. THE SANCTUARY The sanctuary is quiet as worshipers enter and depart. The quietness is for personal reflection and confession. Black is the liturgical color of sorrow and death. Ashes are a sign of repentance. Ashes are also a reminder of our mortality and frailty resulting from the curse of the Fall. We will see the full extent of the shame and guilt of our sins as well as the full extent of the grace and mercy of our God as we journey to the cross. OUR FACILITIES Our restrooms are located to the right as you leave the sanctuary in the Mother s Room and downstairs next to the exit. The members of St. John s believe that families should be encouraged to worship together. (Church, like much of life, needs to be taught to young children.) If your young one needs some time out, we have a video and audioequipped Mother s Room just outside the sanctuary to your right. ASH WEDNESDAY Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, the Christian s 40-day journey with the Lord to the cross and tomb, preparing for the proclamation of Easter. The 40 days are reminiscent of several biblical events: Jesus 40-day fast at the beginning of his ministry, Moses stay on Mount Sinai at the giving of the Law, Elijah s fast on his way to the mountain of God, to name a few. The practice of imposing ashes on the foreheads or hands of Christians gives Ash Wednesday its name. This practice is not exclusive to Roman Catholic Christians; it is also carried out in many other Christian denominations, including Lutheran churches. Ashes remind us of our need for redeeming grace as they bring to mind the rite for Christian burial: earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust. Words that will someday be spoken over our bodies as well. 2

4 M: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. M: Dear friends, let us approach God with a true heart and confess our sins, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to forgive us. C: Lord of life, I confess that I am by nature dead in sin. For faithless worrying and selfish pride, for sins of habit and sins of choice, for the evil I have done and the good I have failed to do, you should cast me away from your presence forever. Like the disciples, I have boldly declared loyalty to you only to fail to proclaim your name; I have foolishly listened to the devil s lies only to be crushed with guilt and shame. O Lord, I am sorry for my sins. Forgive me, for Jesus sake. M: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. In his great mercy, God made us alive in Christ even when we were dead in our sins. Hear the word of Christ through his called servant: I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. PRAYER M: Lord God, you have brought us safely to this hour of evening prayer. We thank you for providing all that we need for body and life. Bless us who have gathered in your name. Forgive our sins. Speak to our hearts. Dispel our sorrows with the comfort of your Word, and receive our hymns of thanks and praise, through Jesus Christ, our living Savior, who reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. OLD TESTAMENT LESSON 2 Samuel 24: David was conscience-stricken after he had counted the fighting men, and he said to the LORD, I have sinned greatly in what I have done. Now, O LORD, I beg you, take away the guilt of your servant. I have done a very foolish thing. 11 Before David got up the next morning, the word of the LORD had come to Gad the prophet, David s seer: 12 Go and tell David, This is what the LORD says: I am giving you three options. Choose one of them for me to carry out against you. 4

5 13 So Gad went to David and said to him, Shall there come upon you three years of famine in your land? Or three months of fleeing from your enemies while they pursue you? Or three days of plague in your land? Now then, think it over and decide how I should answer the one who sent me. 14 David said to Gad, I am in deep distress. Let us fall into the hands of the LORD, for his mercy is great; but do not let me fall into the hands of men. 15 So the LORD sent a plague on Israel from that morning until the end of the time designated, and seventy thousand of the people from Dan to Beersheba died. 16 When the angel stretched out his hand to destroy Jerusalem, the LORD was grieved because of the calamity and said to the angel who was afflicting the people, Enough! Withdraw your hand. The angel of the LORD was then at the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite. 17 When David saw the angel who was striking down the people, he said to the LORD, I am the one who has sinned and done wrong. These are but sheep. What have they done? Let your hand fall upon me and my family. 18 On that day Gad went to David and said to him, Go up and build an altar to the LORD on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite. 19 So David went up, as the LORD had commanded through Gad. 20 When Araunah looked and saw the king and his men coming toward him, he went out and bowed down before the king with his face to the ground. 21 Araunah said, Why has my lord the king come to his servant? To buy your threshing floor, David answered, so I can build an altar to the LORD, that the plague on the people may be stopped. 22 Araunah said to David, Let my lord the king take whatever pleases him and offer it up. Here are oxen for the burnt offering, and here are threshing sledges and ox yokes for the wood. 23 O king, Araunah gives all this to the king. Araunah also said to him, May the LORD your God accept you. 24 But the king replied to Araunah, No, I insist on paying you for it. I will not sacrifice to the LORD my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing. So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen and paid fifty shekels of silver for them. 25 David built an altar to the LORD there and sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings. Then the LORD answered prayer in behalf of the land, and the plague on Israel was stopped. 5

Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. Refrain Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight. Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me. Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. 7 PSALM PRAYER M: God of love and faithfulness, you showed favor to your people by sending your one and only Son to be our Savior. Help us to trust in him as our gracious Redeemer and so enjoy the peace he came to bring, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. EPISTLE LESSON Revelation 3:14-22 To the angel of the church in Laodicea write: These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God s creation. 15 I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! 16 So, because you are lukewarm neither hot nor cold I am about to spit you out of my mouth. 17 You say, I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing. But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. 18 I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see. 19 Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest, and repent. 20 Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. 8 GOSPEL LESSON Luke 18:9-14 M: The Gospel according to St. Luke chapter eighteen. C: Glory be to you, O Lord. 9 To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everybody else, Jesus told this parable: 10 Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood up and prayed about himself: God, I thank you that I am not like other men robbers, evildoers, adulterers or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get. 13 But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, God, have mercy on me, a sinner. 14 I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted. M: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise be to you, O Christ. 8

You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I will tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come. A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so must you love one another. By this, all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another. 9

10 OFFERING THE SACRAMENT The Lord s Supper is a special gift from our Lord Jesus through which he comes to all who partake of it with his very body and blood in, with, and under the bread and wine. Since it is so precious, the Lord gives us a warning to receive it in a right manner (1 Cor. 11:27-28). Participation also expresses complete unity in faith and teaching (1 Cor. 10:16-17). We therefore encourage only individuals who have expressed unity in faith through membership in the WELS or ELS to come forward for The Lord s Supper today. Thank you. M: The Lord be with you. C: And also, with you. M: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them up to the Lord. M: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is good and right so to do. M: It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places give you thanks, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who willingly died under the curse of this world s sin so that we may live forever in the light of God's blessing. 11 PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING M: Blessed are you, O Lord of heaven and earth. We praise and thank you for sending your Son, Jesus Christ, and we remember the great acts of love through which he has ransomed us from sin, death, and the devil s power. By his incarnation, he became one with us. By his perfect life, he fulfilled your holy will. By his innocent death, he overcame hell. By his rising from the grave, he opened heaven. Invited by your grace and instructed by your Word, we approach your table with repentant and joyful hearts. Strengthen us through Christ s body and blood, and preserve us in the true faith until we feast with him and all his ransomed people in glory everlasting. THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen. WORDS OF INSTITUTION M: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take and eat; this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.
