Thank you to the teachers and volunteers who are leading Sunday School, Junior Worship, Youth ministry, evening studies, and much more! Thank you to those who gave of their time, their resources, their energies to making our 50 th Celebration engaging and memorable. We were grateful to have Rev. Paul Beal and Rev. John Capper join us, along with their families. As we linger in the memories of the church s history, might we gain strength from the saints who have passed before us in order to look to where God is now calling Greensburg UMC. Saturday, September 30, we started vision work with members, leaders and staff of the church and Rev. Dr. Tim Morrison. Working together, the group worked on community makeup and the personhood of their church following examining statistics from Mission Insite Data and doing the personhood activity. The homework will be to connect with 100 Non-GUMC residents within a one mile radius; Police, Fire, Mayor, School Principals and Social Workers along with any community non-profits to ask them their perceived need of the community. The next Vision work session is Saturday, October 13, 9am to 12 noon, followed by our final meeting January 5, 9am to 12 noon. All are welcome to be part of this development and treasure hunting for the good works God has placed before Greensburg UMC in the community (Ephesians 2:10). Page Seven Church Calendar If you have any questions or want to join the vision adventure, please connect with me. I look forward to this journey with Greensburg! 2 A Disciple s Path Stewardship and New Members Class October 14 November 18 Starting Sunday, October 14, Greensburg UMC will be experientially venturing through Prayers, Presence, Gifts, Service, and Witness (with labyrinths, Spiritual Gifts Inventory, Special All Saints Sunday, etc.). This will also double as the New Members Class, with members joining Sunday, November 18. Lessons will be taught during the service, and a time for reflection and conversation will happen with Rev. Katie during the 10am Sunday School hour in the Parlor. Whether you are interested in the New Member aspect or simply want to engage in conversation, all are welcome to come and share in time together. If you are interested in becoming a New Member, please contact Lynne Wisard in the main office by Friday, October 12. Altar and Worship Space Designers and Helpers Needed! In various seasons, altars help us connect with the beauty of living into the Spirit. With upgrades to the Fellowship hall and the beauty of the Sanctuary, it is time to unleash expressions of God's movement into worship. Rev. Katie needs designers and helpers - those who love Pinterest, love to craft, love to create - to work on altar and worship spaces for each service in these next months. October: World Wide Communion Sunday (October 7) and A Disciple's Path Series (Prayer, Presence) November: All Saints' Sunday (November 4 - Witness) and continuation of A Disciple's Path Series (Gifts and Service) December: Advent Conspiracy - Worship Fully (combined New (Christian) Year's Brunch December 2 at 10am in the Fellowship Hall - worship, then brunch around the table + communion) Spend Less, Give More, and Love All Not much time is needed here at the church, except to set up - unless we decide to go big. Any age, any gift, any skill offered will be beneficial to all in worship! Talk to Rev. Katie today! A Way Forward and Special Session of the General Conference Thank you to those who attended the conversation on A Way Forward Sunday, September 30. We went over the structure of the church and how it functions on each level. We presented what is currently stated in the 2016 Book of Discipline, the three plans being presented by the Commission on A Way Forward (One Church Plan, Traditional Plan, and Connectional Conference Plan), and followed up with questions. The page of information that was handed out at the session will be available on the church website as of Sunday, October 7. If you were unable to attend and would like the exact wording in the UMC Book of Discipline or more information concerning A Way Forward and Special Session of the General Conference, please be encouraged to check out general-conference-2019-special-session. Also, the delegation of our East Ohio Conference for this session are offering listening posts. These five posts allow the delegation to hear the thoughts and concerns of clergy and laity into the 2019 GC Special Session. At the sessions, there will be a devotion, a brief overview of the process, and a review of the legislation, however the main purpose of these listening posts is for the delegates to listen to the voices of the conference. These posts do require pre-registration (eocumc.com) and are as follows: Tues., Oct. 9 Sat., Oct. 20 Tues., Nov :30pm 9:00pm 10:00am 12:30pm 6:30pm 9:00pm New Philadelphia First UMC Ashland First UMC Aldersgate UMC (North Coast) Please talk with Rev. Katie if you have any further questions and continue to hold the church in your prayers.
3 D ear Church Family, It s been a rough struggle, but I am getting better. I would like to thank Evelyn Ward and Betty Gross for their visits and the church for their prayers. T Marlene Hays hank you for sending me to Wanake Ranch Camp. I had so much fun and learned more about God. It was truly a blessing to get to go to camp. Thank you so much. Love, Georgia Martin We Are Family Picture Collage! To help celebrate our 50th Anniversary and look to the future of ministries here at Greensburg UMC, we are using our theme this year, WE ARE FAMILY, to do a collage. Bring a copy of a picture (so that we can add it to the collage - it may need to be adjusted to fit) of your family interacting with one of our programs. Our goal is to have the collage to be filled throughout the year with new ministries to show us that every ministry at Greensburg UMC - whether it be Potlucks, Mountain T.O.P., Youth Ministry, Children's Ministry, VBS, Adult Sunday School, Camps, Good Neighbors - is one ministry, and together all of us as a church are one family. The Very Latest from Green Sibshops BOTH of them! We ll be putting on our dancin shoes on Saturday, October 20 at a combined Green Sibshop and Sibshop for Teens from 10:30am-1:30pm. We re combining for this event to make it more fun to learn and practice a little line dancing! A very talented and generous individual has agreed to join us to show us how, and we re really looking forward to it. We re blending our groups to make it more fun and having a little mini-reunion in the process. With these sibs of kids with special needs, it s always fun, so we know we ll have a good time. There are many very talented and caring people in our church, and you don t have to be a master at whatever it is you have fun doing in your spare time. So please consider taking a little time on one Saturday morning to share a bit of what makes you special with a group of very special and appreciative kids. You ll have fun guaranteed! We are excited that the Scholastic Book Fair will be coming to GUMC/Loving Hands Preschool from Sunday, October 21 to Friday, October 26. We hope you will stop in the Gathering Area between 9:45-11:15am and check it out!!! Loving Hands Preschool earns up to 40% of all book sales towards new books/equipment for the classrooms. There will also be a great selection of Christian books if you would like to make a donation to the church's Children's Library. The Book Fair will also be held during the Preschool Open house on Wednesday, October 24 from 5:00-6:30pm. On Tuesday, October 30 and Wednesday, October 31, Loving Hands Preschool will be celebrating Halloween. Feel free to come to the church at 9:00am or 12:30pm either day to see the children dressed up and parade around the church!! If you would like to pass out a treat, please make sure that it is nut-free or small trinket toys always work best, too!!! LOOKING AHEAD: Our Christmas Programs will be on Monday, December 10 and Tuesday, December 11 at 11:30am & 6:00pm. If anyone is available to volunteer, we are looking for help serving our families refreshments after each program. Contact Shannon Miller at or smiller1950@sbcglobal.net if you would be interested in helping!! Good Neighbors Annual Christmas Program Distribution Green Good Neighbors is in need of volunteers to help with setup from 8:30am-Noon on Monday, December 3 and with distribution of gifts from 8:30am-Noon and/or 6:00-7:00pm on Tuesday, December 4. Lunch will be provided both days. Call Wednesday mornings in October/November to help. If you would like to give monetary help, we could use the following items: New toys, sports equipment, games, books, and gift cards to Walmart, Kohl s, Target or fast food restaurants. We will be distributing grocery food cards on Wednesdays December 5, 12 and 19. We need grocery gift cards (in increments of $10, $20, $30, and $40) or cash would be appreciated. Thank you for supporting the Green Good Neighbors Christmas program! 3

Friends, this year we have some really fun things in store, and we would really love for you to be involved. What is one way that you as a family can connect to God s love this week? October 14 Who is in your family? What is one thing you as a family love doing together? Try to spend time together in an activity you all love! October 21 (Psalm 133:1) As a family, look at how good and pleasing it is when families live together as one! October 28 What s one thing your family does to keep you safe? Boy Scout Popcorn Time Is Here! YUM-YUM!! Troop 335 and Pack 3335 will have popcorn available after each service on October 7. Pop the seeds yourself in a pan or microwave, or buy ready-to-eat popcorn! Can t decide on a flavor? Buy one of each! Regular, caramel, cheese, jalapeno, chocolate, butter, kettle corn and more! 5
6 Youth Group Time Change Starting October 7 5:00pm-6:30pm Sunday evenings for families and families with youth can be jam packed. The weekend is winding down, homework and projects have waited until the last minute, there are often sports or jobs or Boy Scouts. Sunday evenings can sometimes be the hardest time to gather. Yet Youth Ministry is often the foundation to any Christian's spiritual journey. With this in mind, we at GUMC will be changing our youth meet time to 5:00-6:30pm for a youth dinner and youth ministry for 6th through 12th grade. Be on the lookout as well for opportunities for age specific small group gatherings that are going to be formed this year. We hope that this change will help all our families. 6
