1 the official publication of the broward county police benevolent association The Broward Centurion bcpba.org Volume 11, Issue 12 Charges Dropped Against Deputy State Attorney will not prosecute Lee Martin by Debbie Reggio, PBA Secretary On October 29th charges were dropped against Deputy Lee Martin in the case clearance debacle. That afternoon ASA Tim Donnelly approached the Judge Mily Rodriquez-Powell and nolle prossed the case. This followed Lee s arbitration win in September, clearing the way for his return to work. As I watched all of these clearance cases I prayed that each would end quickly. I would not wish the agony of this process on anyone; it literally tears the deputy and the family apart wondering what is going to happen. I want to thank Deputies Lazzaro Mesa and Shane Campbell for attending Deputy Martin s court appearances to show their support. And thanks again to Lee s attorney, Al Milian, for all his hard work on behalf of our members. We here at the PBA are ecstatic about the outcome and wish Lee the very best in returning to work. Member Killed In On-Duty Crash On November 22 we lost another member of the PBA family. Hollywood officer Alex Del Rio was killed in a car accident while working traffic enforcement. Officer Del Rio was involved in a crash that caused his patrol car to erupt in flames; officers responding to the scene were unable to pull Del Rio from the vehicle. There were no other injuries. Alex was a nine-year veteran of the Hollywood Police Department. The thoughts and prayers of the staff and membership of the Broward County PBA are with the Del Rio family. In this issue... Victory For Sheriff Lamberti... 4 New IRS Rules On Normal Retirement... 6 Are You Being Represented?... 8 Members Receive Commendations What s Up? Letters & Thanks... 12
2 The Broward Centurion The Official Publication of the Broward County PBA (A Charter of the Florida PBA) 2650 West State Road 84 Fort Lauderdale, Florida Telephone: 954/ Fax: 954/ Megan Gordon, Editor The Broward Centurion is published by the Broward County Police Benevolent Association for the sole benefit of its members. Dick Brickman President s Letter Our law enforcement family has suffered another tragic loss. On Saturday night I got the call that one of our members, a Hollywood police officer, was killed in a traffic accident. This type of news should be shocking, but recently we find ourselves saying not another one all too frequently. The tragic death of Officer Alex Del Rio had the entire Hollywood Police Department in dismay. It has been 26 years since the last on-duty death in that city, but it seems like only a few years have gone by. In my first three years on the job Hollywood lost three officers in the line of duty; we became hardened to the fact that losing a fellow officer is part of the job. But now, so many years later, it has not made us tougher but it s brought us closer together as a brotherhood. These are the moments when we reflect on all the good times we spent with those who have fallen and give them and their families the respect they deserve. The way that Officer Del Rio lost his life seems senseless; we cannot lay blame on a individual who took a violent action towards him (as in the case of Chris Reyka), but we can all be proud of him and others who were just doing their jobs when their lives were cut short. This is the time for all those that serve the public to be proud of our profession and to be proud of those who have paid the ultimate price. To the families of those who have passed we will never forget what your loved ones stood for and how they conducted themselves in protecting those whom they served. 4 Victory for Sheriff Lamberti I wish to thank those who showed up for Sheriff Lamberti s fundraisers and press conferences in support of his campaign. The PBA gave our word to him that we would support him in his fight to win the election. I am proud of those who stood with me in support for our sheriff and wish to thank everyone involved in this process. The following employees/members of the PBA and their families helped by holding signs during the early election process or on the day of the election in support of Sheriff Lamberti. Man who shot Deputy found guilty The man who shot Deputy Maury Hernandez in August 2007 has been convicted of attempted first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer. The jury deliberated for over three hours before finding David Maldonado guilty. He could face life in prison when he is sentenced this month. Maldonado s attorney argued that the state couldn t prove that the bullet fragments in Dep. Hernandez s head were from the accused s gun, intimating that the officer may have shot himself. Ballistics experts testified that Hernandez s weapon was fully loaded and hadn t been fired. Maldonado was also convicted of attempted robbery for attempting to carjack an SUV after the shooting.
