1 Beaverdam UMC Rouzie s Chapel UMC: Two Amazing Churches, One Awesome God 2015 SEPTEMBER Issue 8 Dear Church Family, Emmanuel means simply God is with us. It is one of the names of Jesus given in Isaiah 7:7 and quoted in Matthew 1:23: Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son, and they will call him Emmanuel, which means God is with us. It is not even fully Fall yet, and I am referencing a text we hear most often in Advent the weeks leading up to Christmas. Way ahead of myself? Not really. Although we most often quote and reference these verses around the celebration of Christ s birth, Jesus is our Emmanuel our God with us year round, 24/7, all seasons, all stages of life. Fall and the return of students to school and everyone to a more routine way of life is a great time of year to remember that our God is with us always. God is with us through the scriptures read, through the worship services attended, through the prayers prayed and the songs sung. Fall with its return to routine and schedules is the perfect time to remember and renew our belief that whatever we face, whatever we start, whatever we finish, it all is lived out with our God right there with us. With us through it all. So as you settle into your own return to a more scheduled life, hold to these words that Jesus gave His disciples as he physically left their presence, And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age. (Matthew 28:20) With transforming hope, Claudia CHANGE OF ADDRESS: Please change the address that our pastor Claudia has used from newlife4chs@embarqmail.com to ClaudiaStallings@vaumc.org effective immediately. 6 6 20 The bigger they are, the harder they fall. Here is Bill Perry from Beaverdam UMC at one of our current work sites. The Wood Ministry has been working on this big red oak for several weeks. This giant oak is over 200 hundred years old. The grain in the trunk of the tree goes all different directions making it very difficult to cut and even harder to split. As we cut and split we are also delivering the firewood to our families. It is less work to deliver now than to take the firewood to the wood yard and deliver it later in the fall. No use handling the wood twice. We have been blessed with a lot of good oak wood donations. Peggy May from Beaverdam UMC has also donated wonderful oak to our Wood Ministry. Here it is only the first of September and we have already delivered 20 loads of firewood to our families. Westview on the James The WHWM teamed up with the Hanover Christian Firewood Ministry, our counterpart in Hanover County east of I-95, and Wright s Chapel on August 15 th to go to Westview on the James, a year around Christian camp and retreat outside of Richmond, VA. Eighteen woodsmen showed up at 8:00 in the morning to cut and split wood for Westview. With 5 splitters and numerous chainsaws the crew dispatched every bit of logs into stacks of freshly split firewood for the fall and winter campers. A fellowship lunch with hamburgers, hotdogs, beans, salads and chips made for an enjoyable day on the James. Great camaraderie was had by all. We are looking forward to supporting Westview s wood needs in the future. Want to join the Wood Ministry? If you would like to help with cutting, splitting, and delivering wood to our Wood Ministry families contact Fredy Calderon at , axc609@gmail.com or Dick Lear at , rblear1@gmail.com. Deliveries are usually made on Wednesday and/or Saturday mornings. A couple hours of your time each week could make a huge difference to one of our family s lives. Thanks in advance for supporting our Wood Ministry with your time talent, trucks, chainsaws, gas oil, donations and the camaraderie and fellowship you provide to our group. The Friendship Book One day, I looked up the history of duct tape after seeing a reference to it in a magazine. It was, I discovered invented for military purposes during the Second World War. It became known as duct tape after 1945 when it was used for sealing airconditioning ducts, although it s apparently not ideal for that purpose. It is, however, very useful for fixing things around the home if you don t mind the bright silver finish your DIY will have (it comes in other colors now). Why was I doing this research? Well, because I had just read that in Finland they call duct tape the Jesus Tape. Because, just like Him, it s the savior of all things broken!
7 The Most Important Communication and Social Skill Ever by Pastor Greg Baker 7 There are so many things that could go on a list of important skills to develop when building or establishing a relationship. I've been counseling for over ten years, and all of the supposed words of wisdom that I've uttered since that day pale in comparison to the good that this single skill has accomplished in my counseling and personal relationships. What is the most important social skill? Here it is: the art of listening. There have been innumerable times, it seems, that people have stepped into my office with a problem that they don't know how to handle. They sit down with a defeated air, a strained expression, and hopeless eyes. I begin, "What can I do for you?" And they begin to talk. They talk. I listen. So many times they stand up after the session is over with a completely different attitude. "Preacher," they say, "you've been so helpful. Thank you so much. I feel so much better." I may have said all of a dozen words, but just having someone who was interested in their problem did the most good. Just having someone willing to listen is all that most people need. Recently, a very distraught young lady called me with a problem. The problem was with someone else in our Church, and she began with the statement, "I can't go back to that Church anymore." I asked her if she'd like to talk about it. She indicated she would, so I scheduled a time for her to come on down when my wife would be around. She arrived and I asked her, "Could you tell me about it?" She did, and as she talked everything changed. She went from 'that Church'to 'our Church' by the time the conversation was over. I talked some, but mostly I just listened. She decided she didn't want to leave after all. Finding someone who will listen, and I mean really listen, is a very rare skill now a days. We seem to want to say our peace, give our opinion, and insert our notions into a conversation. Few people know how to turn the mouth off and the ears on. There is significantly more to listening than merely hearing what someone is saying. I'd like to give you a few suggestions and tips, if you'll hear me out, that'll help you develop this essential social and communication skill. LOOK THEM IN THE EYE How many times have you sought to talk to someone who was looking somewhere else? Frustrating isn't it? We often demand that our children look at us when we talk to them, because if we can't see the eyes, we feel they aren't listening. Look someone in the eye when they are talking to you. Give them your undivided attention. It'll do wonders for how people perceive you. LOOK INTERESTED Nod in the appropriate place, or shake your head when it is called for. Add a helpful, "Wow," or a, "That's interesting," or a, "I'm sorry," comment here and there. Make sure that your facial expression reflects the fact that you are listening. Don't stare off into the distance, or fiddle with your fingers, or tap your foot impatiently. Look patient and interested. Give them your full ear and attention. ASK SMALL, CLARIFIYING QUESTIONS This is important. When someone is talking, only ever interrupt to ask small, clarifying questions that demonstrate your willingness to listen to them. Doing this also accomplishes two other very important things. First, it shows them that you care. People who don't care, don't care enough to ask questions. When someone cares for you they inquire after your health, or ask about your family, or ask your opinion on something. When listening to someone ask questions that show how much you care. People always gravitate to that. Secondly, it steers the conversation towards the best resolution. When someone is hurting, excited, or struggling they often can't see the problem clearly. Since you don't have as much of an emotional stake in the issue, you will probably see it better than they do. That being the case, your questions gently steer them towards the obvious resolution. Most people know what needs to be done with a problem. But while under the emotional impact of the problem, they become paralyzed or befuddled in their thinking. Asking these questions helps steer them to what they know they should do. Many times I just end up agreeing with their final analysis after asking some very appropriate questions that gets them to think better about the issue. The art of listening is an essential skill for anyone who wants to help build their relationships, endear people to them, and foster trust between two people. If married couples would take the time to listen to each other they would find a significant portion of their problems evaporate. A good listener makes people feel secure, loved, cared for, and accepted. Give it a try. You'll like it. 8 Beaverdam and Rouzie s Chapel United Methodist Church P. O. Box 67 Beaverdam, Va JUG s CORNER Hi Boys and Girls, The pastor has been preaching about different people in the Bible and it has been quite enjoyable. Acts 20: 7-12 tells of a young man who fell to sleep much like some of us would if the preacher spoke as long as Paul did. Paul came to Troas on the first day of the week to speak and break bread just like our communion. He was going to leave the next day and he had much to say. He probably talked for hours and indeed, he talked until midnight. A young man named Eutychus fell asleep and since he was sitting in the widow, fell to the ground, which was 3 stories high and obviously, was knocked unconscious. Well, everybody thought he was dead, except Paul. Paul went to the lad and told all not to be alarmed for he was alive. Did the story end there? No! Paul went back and talked until daylight. The morals to this story are several but the best is to Laugh, Love and Pray often and don't sit in the window sill after eating. Have a good week. Love.
