1 Christmas Eve 2014 Family Services 4:00 and 5:30 p.m. Westminster Presbyterian Church 1502 West 13 th Street Wilmington, DE
2 WELCOME ON THIS HOLY NIGHT, we engage one of the deep mysteries of our faith. In celebrating Christmas, we try to push away the cares of the moment and the rush of things to do. As we worship, we create a wide, sweet space to listen, to pray, to sing, and to receive the gift of God s presence. No one will ever make sense of how God, the Infinite, was revealed in the finite. So we tell a story and simply wonder at it all. Welcome to a house of wonder. ANNOUNCEMENTS We welcome everyone to Westminster Church for these Christmas Eve Services. We extend a special welcome to visitors and those who return for the holiday. If you live in the Wilmington area and do not have a church home, we hope you will consider uniting with our church family. You are invited to continue your Christmas Eve celebration by attending one of our Candlelight Communion Services tonight at 8:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. Childcare will be available for the 8:00 p.m. service. 3 TOWER CHIME PRELUDE CHRISTMAS EVE WORSHIP - 4:00 P.M. Sue Spilecki CALL TO WORSHIP Do not be afraid; for see I am bringing you good news of great joy. To us is born this day in the city of David a Savior, the Messiah, the Lord. Angels from the Realms of Glory Angels, from the realms of glory, wing your flight o'er all the earth; you, who sang creation's story, now proclaim Messiah's birth: Come and worship, come and worship, worship Christ, the newborn King! Shepherds, in the fields abiding, watching o'er your flocks by night, God with us is now residing; yonder shines the infant light: Come and worship, come and worship, worship Christ, the newborn King! LIGHTING OF THE CHRIST CANDLE PRAYER We have been watching and waiting and Christmas is finally here! We have lit candles to remind us of the hope, peace, love and joy that we have in Christ. Tonight we light the Christ candle to symbolize God s promise is fulfilled. For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Glory to God in the highest heaven, and peace to all on whom his favor rests. Living God, on this holy night we gather to stand with shepherds, amazed at your glory; to sing with angels, rejoicing in your work; to wait with Joseph, trusting in your promise; to sit with Mary, cradling your love. May the good news of this night inspire us to tell the world of our great joy: for to us is born a Savior, the Messiah, the Lord. Glory and praise to you forever! Amen. O Come, All Ye Faithful O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant; O come ye; O come ye to Bethlehem! Come, and behold him, born the King of angels! Sing, choirs of angels; sing in exultation; sing, all ye citizens of heaven above! Glory to God, all glory in the highest! Refrain: O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him; O come, let us adore him, Christ, the Lord! 3
4 THE JOURNEY AND THE BIRTH Luke 2:1-7 Away in a Manger Away in a manger, no crib for His bed, The little Lord Jesus laid down His sweet head. The stars in the sky looked down where He lay, The little Lord Jesus, asleep on the hay. The cattle are lowing, the poor Baby wakes, But little Lord Jesus, no crying He makes. I love Thee Lord Jesus, look down from the sky, And stay by my side until morning is nigh. SHEPHERDS HEAR THE NEWS Luke 2:8-14 Hark! The Herald Angels Sing Hark! The herald angels sing, Glory to the newborn King. Peace on earth, and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled! Joyful, all ye nations, rise, Join the triumph of the skies; With the angelic host proclaim, Christ is born in Bethlehem! Hark! The herald angels sing, Glory to the newborn King! Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace! Hail the sun of righteousness! Light and life to all He brings, Risen with healing in His wings. Mild He lays His glory by, Born that we no more may die, Born to raise us from the earth, Born to give us second birth. Hark! The herald angels sing, Glory to the newborn King! SHEPHERDS GO TO BETHLEHEM Luke 2:15-20 While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks by Night While shepherds watched their flocks by night, all seated on the ground, the angel of the Lord came down, and glory shone around, and glory shone around. "The heavenly babe you there shall find to human view displayed, all humbly wrapped in swathing bands, and in a manger laid, and in a manger laid." KINGS FOLLOW THE STAR Matthew 2:1-11 The First Nowell And by the light of that same star, three wise men came from country far; to seek for a king was their intent, and to follow the star wherever it went. Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, born is the King of Israel. Then entered in those wise men three, full reverently upon their knee, and offered there in his presence, their gold, and myrrh, and frankincense. Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, born is the King of Israel. 4

12 to GOD CHRISTMAS AT WESTMINSTER 2014 As we near the celebration of Christ s birth, we long for a world more in line with God s vision a world where everyone has a place at the table and plenty to eat, a warm place to call home, meaningful work, opportunities for an education, a supportive community and a less violent world. Jesus said that when we care for people in need, we care for him. Our Christmas Offering gives us the chance to share a portion of our blessings with people in dire circumstances. Will you help those in our community and in other troubled spots around the globe find hope? Our Christmas Offering will support local ministries (70%) and global ministries (30%) that provide food, shelter, education, clean water, and enable peacemaking. Throughout the year, Westminster donates food to the pantries at LCS/St. Stephen s Lutheran and Hanover Presbyterian Churches. They provide food assistance to those in need in our community. One in four Delawareans, half of them children, need emergency food assistance during the year. 20% of your offering will support these life-sustaining ministries, which now include our newest program of fresh produce distribution % of your gift will go to support Sojourners Place. Unlike emergency shelters, which provide a short-term place to escape the weather, Sojourners Place offers homeless women and men a place to call home while they get their lives back on course. A successful graduate leaves Sojourners Place with a full-time job and housing. Another 25% of this year s offering will go to the Urban Promise College Retention Fund, which provides financial assistance for students who have progressed through the Urban Promise mentoring and youth leadership training programs and are now in college. Urban Promise equips children and young adults who live in low income urban neighborhoods with opportunities for academic achievement and servant leadership. 25% of your offering will be shared equally between providing educational opportunities for girls and women in Guatemala and the Congo who have been affected by violence and exploitation in their countries, and our Safe Water in Guatemala (SWIG) water filter project, allowing families to experience life without gastrointestinal distress. 5% will go to Peace Drums, a unique interfaith initiative promoting peace among Jewish, Christian and Muslim youth living in the Galilee region of Israel Thank you for your support! We extend 12 wishes for a joyful Christmas and a wonderful and peaceful New Year to you and your loved ones.
