Genesis (2011) 36 Having reached the end f Isaac s tldat, we reach an interlude with chapter 36 The next tldat we will study will be the tldat f Jacb Specifically, we ll study the stry f his children The bk f Genesis cntains 10 tldts r genealgies altgether This chapter gives us the ninth tldat Let s remember that the stry f Genesis isn t cncerned with telling an interesting stry r dcumenting the lives f interesting peple It is a very interesting stry and it des revlve arund sme very interesting peple But Genesis is a stry f Man s creatin, fall and Gd s respnse t that fall The respnse f Gd was t prmise a Seed Wh wuld cme int the wrld t save Creatin frm the fall That Seed is Jesus Christ S in Genesis we re fcused n the stries f thse wh are cnnected in sme way t Gd s fulfillment f His prmise Obviusly, the patriarchs are imprtant t the fulfillment f that prmise Abraham, Isaac and Jacb are men wh prduce the natin f Israel And Israel will be the peple t bring the Messiah int the wrld With Abraham and Isaac, Mses fcused n which f tw pssible heirs received the seed prmise In the case f Abraham, Isaac received the prmise and in the case f Isaac, Jacb received the prmise But in bth cases, Mses alltted a chapter t bringing t an end the stry f the rejected sn 2012 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Genesis 36 2 f 13 Chapter 25 was devted t Ishmael And this chapter is devted t Esau After these chapters are cmplete, neither Ishmael nr Esau appears in Mses narrative again But the peple f Ishmael, that is the Arabs, and the peple f Esau, the Edmites, d feature prminently in Israel s histry S these chapters help us cnnect the dts between the events f the patriarch s lives and later events in the natin S chapter 36 is the generatins f Esau As we study the scripture, we are likely tempted t skip ver a chapter like chapter 36 That s understandable, since the chapter desn t cntain much f a narrative It reads mre like a laundry list This is an pprtunity fr us t appreciate the difference between reading the Bible and studying the Bible Reading the Bible is leaning back activity, and in thse time we might skip a genealgy chapter fr gd reasn Studying the Bible is leaning frward behavir when we pick up pen and paper (r cmputer) and dig deep int the wrd Tday we re ging t take tday t study chapter 36 because there are imprtant issues and peple cnnected with it The chapter is actually tw genealgies in three parts The first genealgy runs frm vs.1-8 It describes the wives and sns f Esau brn while he lived in the land f Canaan The secnd genealgy runs begins in v.9 and runs t the end f the chapter It cmes in tw parts The first part is the sns and grandsns f Esau brn utside the land while he lived in Edm, suthern Jrdan 2012 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Genesis 36 3 f 13 The final part describes the varius chiefs r leaders f the clan f Edmites Gen. 36:1 Nw these are the recrds f the generatins f Esau (that is, Edm). Gen. 36:2 Esau tk his wives frm the daughters f Canaan: Adah the daughter f Eln the Hittite, and Ohlibamah the daughter f Anah and the granddaughter f Ziben the Hivite; Gen. 36:3 als Basemath, Ishmael s daughter, the sister f Nebaith. Gen. 36:4 Adah bre Eliphaz t Esau, and Basemath bre Reuel, Gen. 36:5 and Ohlibamah bre Jeush and Jalam and Krah. These are the sns f Esau wh were brn t him in the land f Canaan. Gen. 36:6 Then Esau tk his wives and his sns and his daughters and all his husehld, and his livestck and all his cattle and all his gds which he had acquired in the land f Canaan, and went t anther land away frm his brther Jacb. Gen. 36:7 Fr their prperty had becme t great fr them t live tgether, and the land where they sjurned culd nt sustain them because f their livestck. Gen. 36:8 S Esau lived in the hill cuntry f Seir; Esau is Edm. The genealgy f Esau begins with his three wives Immediately we re reminded f his chice t take wives f the Canaanites, a cursed peple While Esau was wrng simply t take multiple wives, we must remember that his brther tk tw wives as well (plus cncubines) Multiple marriages were wrng fr bth men, but Esau s chief sin was t live in unbelief He held n regard fr the prmises f Gd, including the seed prmise He held n regard fr the Lrd s cmmand nt t take wives frm the Canaanites He was a gdless man If yu are ne t ntice details, yu may have recgnized that Esau s three wives have different names Cnfusing matters still further, the name changes invlve ne name mving frm ne wife t anther Originally, Esau had Basemath, Judith, and Mahalath 2012 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Genesis 36 4 f 13 Nw Esau s wives are called (in the same rder) Adah, Ohlibamah, Basemath Adah means rnament, while her riginal name f Basemath meant perfumed Ohlibamah means the tent f the high place, which is a place f idl wrship, while her riginal name Judith meant praisewrthy Finally, Mahlath becmes Basemath After Esau had established his family in the land, he left Canaan and went t settle in the hill cuntry f Seir, which becmes Edm His livestck had becme s numerus, he culd n lnger live alngside his brther Jacb We remember that as Jacb re-entered the land, he met Esau and discvered that Esau was quite wealthy himself Esau lived in the suth f the land but as Jacb arrived, he mved dwn t Seir t find enugh land fr bth f them It s nt merely happenstance that Esau chse t mve utside the land prmised t Jacb Take nte that thugh mst all f Jacb s sns were brn utside the land, the Lrd was faithful t bring Jacb s family back int the land Meanwhile, Esau s sns were all brn inside the land Nevertheless, Esau despised the birthright and was gdless, s he eventually leaves the prmised land Fr Esau, every piece f land was equally valuable s lng as it met his needs Mses reminds us that the the inheritance and destinies f a man f faith and a man f the wrld have nthing in cmmn Gd tld Abraham cncerning Isaac and Ishmael 2012 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Genesis 36 5 f 13 Gen. 21:10 Therefre she said t Abraham, Drive ut this maid and her sn, fr the sn f this maid shall nt be an heir with my sn Isaac. Gen. 21:11 The matter distressed Abraham greatly because f his sn. Gen. 21:12 But Gd said t Abraham, D nt be distressed because f the lad and yur maid; whatever Sarah tells yu, listen t her, fr thrugh Isaac yur descendants shall be named. Gen. 21:13 And f the sn f the maid I will make a natin als, because he is yur descendant. Likewise, Gd has separated Jacb and Esau They were already separated spiritually And they will be separated in eternity And nw they are separated physically If the inheritance that Jacb will receive is nt t appear until the Kingdm f Christ arrives, what difference des it make whether Esau lives in Canaan? Canaan is a picture f the prmised land f the kingdm And Gd pushes bth Ishmael and Esau ut f the land t emphasize that the ungdly share nthing with Gd s children Gd makes makes distinctins between His children and the unredeemed in the wrld But false teachers and ungdly men will tell yu that this distinctin will cmmn appear in the frm f wealth They will lie t yu telling yu that Gd intends believers t be wealthy They pint t the way Gd blesses believers in the Bible at times, like Abraham and Jacb And then they tell us that if we aren t wealthy t, then Gd must be displeased with us But the stries f Ishmael and Esau gives us a perfect examples t disprve such false teaching Bth Ishmael and Esau were wealthy just like Isaac and Jacb 2012 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Genesis 36 6 f 13 In fact, in Genesis 21:13, we read that Gd prmised t make Ishmael a natin Gd made that prmise t Abraham befre he had any children And even thugh Abraham did the wrng thing t prduce Ishmael, nevertheless Gd blessed Ishmael as prmised The truth is Gd blesses bth believer and unbeliever with material prvisin as He chses t suit his purpses Many unbelievers are wealthy In fact, I best wealthy peple are mre ften nt believers But remember that while they may be rich in earthly terms, they are destitute in eternity While we may entertain sinful desires fr mre f this wrld, we shuld remember we have an inheritance in heaven beynd anything we culd find n earth S Esau mved abut miles suth-sutheast int Seir Originally, Esau s family prbably arrived peacefully But inevitably disputes arse with the peple living in the land And then Esau destryed the inhabitants f Seir by frce as well as by intermarriage Deut. 2:12 The Hrites frmerly lived in Seir, but the sns f Esau dispssessed them and destryed them frm befre them and settled in their place, just as Israel did t the land f their pssessin which the LORD gave t them.) Gd ensures that Esau finds a hme in Edm, just as He ensured Jacb s family wuld find their hme in Canaan Thrughut the rest f scripture, the place f Edm becmes synnymus with evil, ungdly, sinful peple Just as Canaan becmes a picture f the Prmised Land, Edm becmes a picture f Hell and judgment fr the unbeliever 2012 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Genesis 36 7 f 13 Even mre imprtantly, the place f Edm is initially a trmentr f Israel The peple f Israel ften fight the Edmites In the time f Jesus, the family f Herd wh ruled ver and terrrized the Jews were decedents f the Edmites But Gd prmises that ne day Israel will turn the tables n the Edmites The Messiah will fight fr Israel and crush Edm frever Num. 24:15 He tk up his discurse and said, ı The racle f Balaam the sn f Ber, And the racle f the man whse eye is pened, Num. 24:16 The racle f him wh hears the wrds f Gd, And knws the knwledge f the Mst High, Wh sees the visin f the Almighty, Falling dwn, yet having his eyes uncvered. Num. 24:17 I see him, but nt nw; I behld him, but nt near; A star shall cme frth frm Jacb, A scepter shall rise frm Israel, And shall crush thrugh the frehead f Mab, And tear dwn all the sns f Sheth. Num. 24:18 Edm shall be a pssessin, Seir, its enemies, als will be a pssessin, While Israel perfrms valiantly. Num. 24:19 One frm Jacb shall have dminin, ı And will destry the remnant frm the city. Therefre, Esau s residence in Seir and his peple s temprary life in Edm becmes a picture Gd uses in scripture Esau himself pictures the unbeliever Esau s family pictures the unbelieving, sinful wrld that hates Gd s wrd and Gd s peple Edmites persecute the Jews, picturing the way the enemy uses unbelievers t attack Gd and Gd s peple 2012 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Genesis 36 8 f 13 Gd permits these peple t live side by side with His children fr reasns that fit His purpse in creatin They serve t chastise the peple f Israel when they sin They becme antagnists fr Israel t cnquer when Gd wishes t shw His mighty pwer in Israel But ne day, the Lrd will have a final victry ver the ungdly in the wrld And the destructin f Edm will becme a final picture f Christ s triumphant return at His Secnd Cming Is. 63:1 Wh is this wh cmes frm Edm, With garments f glwing clrs frm Bzrah, This One wh is majestic in His apparel, Marching in the greatness f His strength? ı It is I wh speak in righteusness, mighty t save. Is. 63:2 Why is Yur apparel red, And Yur garments like the ne wh treads in the wine press? Is. 63:3 I have trdden the wine trugh alne, And frm the peples there was n man with Me. I als trd them in My anger And trampled them in My wrath; And their lifebld is sprinkled n My garments, And I stained all My raiment. Is. 63:4 Fr the day f vengeance was in My heart, And My year f redemptin has cme. Israel has always understd that the destructin f Edm was a necessary precursr t the arrival f their prmised King and Kingdm The Psalmist said as much in his psalm remembering the suffering f Israel in the Babylnia captivity Psa. 137:1 By the rivers f Babyln, There we sat dwn and wept, When we remembered Zin. Psa. 137:2 Upn the willws in the midst f it We hung ur harps. Psa. 137:3 Fr there ur captrs demanded f us sngs, And ur trmentrs mirth, saying, 2012 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Genesis 36 9 f 13 ı Sing us ne f the sngs f Zin. Psa. 137:4 Hw can we sing the LORD S sng In a freign land? Psa. 137:5 If I frget yu, O Jerusalem, May my right hand frget her skill. Psa. 137:6 May my tngue cling t the rf f my muth If I d nt remember yu, If I d nt exalt Jerusalem Abve my chief jy. Psa. 137:7 Remember, O LORD, against the sns f Edm The day f Jerusalem, ı Wh said, Raze it, raze it ı T its very fundatin. Psa. 137:8 O daughter f Babyln, yu devastated ne, Hw blessed will be the ne wh repays yu With the recmpense with which yu have repaid us. Psa. 137:9 Hw blessed will be the ne wh seizes and dashes yur little nes Against the rck. The rest f the chapter tells the genealgy f Esau after he leaves the land He has mre sns and these sns becmes chief and leaders in Edm T finish the chapter, we ll read thrugh the list f sns f Esau and nte a few interesting names alng the way Gen. 36:10 These are the names f Esau s sns: Eliphaz the sn f Esau s wife Adah, Reuel the sn f Esau s wife Basemath. Gen. 36:11 The sns f Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, Zeph and Gatam and Kenaz. Gen. 36:12 Timna was a cncubine f Esau s sn Eliphaz and she bre Amalek t Eliphaz. These are the sns f Esau s wife Adah. Gen. 36:13 These are the sns f Reuel: Nahath and Zerah, Shammah and Mizzah. These were the sns f Esau s wife Basemath. Gen. 36:14 These were the sns f Esau s wife Ohlibamah, the daughter f Anah and the granddaughter f Ziben: she bre t Esau, Jeush and Jalam and Krah. One f Esau s sns is Eliphaz, and his sn is Teman Teman was father f the Temanites One f Jb s cunselrs was Eliphaz, the Temanite 2012 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Genesis f 13 The stry f Jb happened in this area and prbably arund the time f Genesis 36 One f Esau s descendants was Amalek He is father f the Amalekites, wh settled in the Sinai and the Negev desert in suthern Israel These peple were the first peple t attack Israel after they settled in the land They later defeated and ruled ver the natin f Israel in the time f Judges Saul defeated them David attacked them And they were finally exterminated under Hezekiah This cmpletes the list f Esau s descendants In this list yu find a ttal f 13 tribes, just as in Israel Israel has 12 tribes until Jseph s sns Nw we read a marathn f names t end the chapter, lking at the chiefs r leaders f Esau s family Gen. 36:15 These are the chiefs f the sns f Esau. The sns f Eliphaz, the firstbrn f Esau, are chief Teman, chief Omar, chief Zeph, chief Kenaz, Gen. 36:16 chief Krah, chief Gatam, chief Amalek. These are the chiefs descended frm Eliphaz in the land f Edm; these are the sns f Adah. Gen. 36:17 These are the sns f Reuel, Esau s sn: chief Nahath, chief Zerah, chief Shammah, chief Mizzah. These are the chiefs descended frm Reuel in the land f Edm; these are the sns f Esau s wife Basemath. Gen. 36:18 These are the sns f Esau s wife Ohlibamah: chief Jeush, chief Jalam, chief Krah. These are the chiefs descended frm Esau s wife Ohlibamah, the daughter f Anah. Gen. 36:19 These are the sns f Esau (that is, Edm), and these are their chiefs. The clans were lead by chiefs because the initially the peple were nt a natin in the land f Edm Esau s family were tribes with chiefs ver a tribe 2012 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Genesis f 13 The next part f the chapter deals with the genealgy f the Hrites, the native peples f Seir that Esau cnquered Gen. 36:20 These are the sns f Seir the Hrite, the inhabitants f the land: Ltan and Shbal and Ziben and Anah, Gen. 36:21 and Dishn and Ezer and Dishan. These are the chiefs descended frm the Hrites, the sns f Seir in the land f Edm. Gen. 36:22 The sns f Ltan were Hri and Hemam; and Ltan s sister was Timna. Gen. 36:23 These are the sns f Shbal: Alvan and Manahath and Ebal, Sheph and Onam. Gen. 36:24 These are the sns f Ziben: Aiah and Anah he is the Anah wh fund the ht springs in the wilderness when he was pasturing the dnkeys f his father Ziben. Gen. 36:25 These are the children f Anah: Dishn, and Ohlibamah, the daughter f Anah. Gen. 36:26 These are the sns f Dishn: Hemdan and Eshban and Ithran and Cheran. Gen. 36:27 These are the sns f Ezer: Bilhan and Zaavan and Akan. Gen. 36:28 These are the sns f Dishan: Uz and Aran. Gen. 36:29 These are the chiefs descended frm the Hrites: chief Ltan, chief Shbal, chief Ziben, chief Anah, Gen. 36:30 chief Dishn, chief Ezer, chief Dishan. These are the chiefs descended frm the Hrites, accrding t their varius chiefs in the land f Seir. The Hrites were cave-dwellers (the name means cave-dweller) They lacked frtified cities, and s they were relatively easy fr Esau t defeat He then intermarried with them and in the uniting f Esau and the Hrites, a natin f Edm was frmed Esau s family cntrlled that land Prir t that merger, the peple f Seir were ruled by chiefs ver clans much like Esau s familiy The land f Seir was nt a single natin but a regin f individual clans After Esau cnquered the peple f Seir, the natin frmed with kings ruling ver all the peple Gen. 36:31 Nw these are the kings wh reigned in the land f Edm befre any king reigned ver the sns f Israel. Gen. 36:32 Bela the sn f Ber reigned in Edm, and the name f his city was Dinhabah. Gen. 36:33 Then Bela died, and Jbab the sn f Zerah f Bzrah became king in his place Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Genesis f 13 Gen. 36:34 Then Jbab died, and Husham f the land f the Temanites became king in his place. Gen. 36:35 Then Husham died, and Hadad the sn f Bedad, wh defeated Midian in the field f Mab, became king in his place; and the name f his city was Avith. Gen. 36:36 Then Hadad died, and Samlah f Masrekah became king in his place. Gen. 36:37 Then Samlah died, and Shaul f Rehbth n the Euphrates River became king in his place. Gen. 36:38 Then Shaul died, and Baal-hanan the sn f Achbr became king in his place. Gen. 36:39 Then Baal-hanan the sn f Achbr died, and Hadar became king in his place; and the name f his city was Pau; and his wife s name was Mehetabel, the daughter f Matred, daughter f Mezahab. Gen. 36:40 Nw these are the names f the chiefs descended frm Esau, accrding t their families and their lcalities, by their names: chief Timna, chief Alvah, chief Jetheth, Gen. 36:41 chief Ohlibamah, chief Elah, chief Pinn, Gen. 36:42 chief Kenaz, chief Teman, chief Mibzar, Gen. 36:43 chief Magdiel, chief Iram. These are the chiefs f Edm (that is, Esau, the father f the Edmites), accrding t their habitatins in the land f their pssessin. These last verses becme a clsing recrd t finish the discussin f Esau and his families It s likely that this list ends with thse wh were in pwer in Edm at the time Mses was writing Genesis It s interesting that the kings didn t appear t cme frm a single family dynasty, like in Egypt Instead, the thrne mved arund frm family t family, perhaps based n military pwer r an electin Edm is never said t have a capital city because the thrne mved frm tribe t tribe Als, it s clear tward the end that the Canaanite pagan gd Baal had made his influence knwn One f the last kings, Baal-hanan, name means that Baal is gracius And f the 81 names in the list, nly tw have the name f Gd (el) in their name Further cnfirmatin f the ungdly nature f Esau s psterity 2012 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Genesis f 13 Finally, it s interesting that Mses mentins that Edm had kings befre Israel Remember, when Mses wrte this bk, Israel had never had a king nr sught fr a king S hw did Mses knw t say that Edm had kings befre Israel? Simply, the Hly Spirit inspired Mses But we als knw that Gd had prmised t Jacb that his family wuld have kings S Mses wuld nly need t knw the prmise given t Jacb t understand that ne day Israel wuld have kings Even if that day were still in the future Next week, we turn ur attentin t the lives f Jacb s sns, and Judah and Jseph in particular. The study f Jseph is prbably ne f the mst famus and pwer stries recrded in all f Scripture Thrugh Jseph we see a clear picture f Christ, as many have taught A man f supreme patience and trust in Gd But we als see an even clearer picture f Gd s pwer and svereignty, f His unchangeable purpse and His lve His wisdm and pwer t keep His prmises using even the sin f men t accmplish His will With this stry, we enter the hme stretch in the bk f Genesis 2012 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.
