ADAMS, JACKSON & VAN BUREN John Quincy Adams loses office after one term to the astonishingly popular Andrew Jackson, who is followed by his disciple Martin Van Buren. HARRISON, TYLER, POLK & TAYLOR As the Westward Movement and Manifest Destiny gained momentum, controversies about slavery, border disputes, and territorial rights were reflected in Presidential conflicts. FILLMORE, PIERCE & BUCHANAN Three Presidents preceded the Civil War. They compromised with southerners, the Dred Scott decision occurred, John Brown led his raid, and the Republican Party was founded. ABRAHAM LINCOLN While he delayed emancipating the slaves and suspended some legal rights during the Civil War, his overriding dedication to keeping the Union intact is considered one of the greatest accomplishments of the Presidency. 12 JOHNSON, GRANT & HAYES The Reconstruction period damaged the Presidency with Johnson's impeachment, Grant's corruption scandal, and Hayes election fraud. GARFIELD, ARTHUR, CAND, & HARRISON When President Garfield was assassinated, few expected Arthur to be the strong reformer he turned out to be. Industrialization, urbanization, and immigration problems led Cleveland to be reform-minded, but he was defeated by Harrison, who became expansionist. CAND, McKINLEY, & THEODORE ROOSEVELT Cleveland was re-elected, but economic problems plagued his tenure. McKinley was lucky to become President during an economic upturn, and he and Roosevelt used growing American wealth to project military power around the world. IN AMERICA S HISTORY: TAFT, WILSON, HARDING, COOLIDGE, & HOOVER Taft began as T.R's chosen successor, but quarreling split the party, allowing Wilson to become the first Democratic President of the 20th century. His Republican successors Harding, Coolidge, and Hoover promoted the business boom of the 20's, but economic and military shadows increased internationally. 10: : : :

13 FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT FDR s character, as well as his wife's, affected his era. Moving documentary footage creates an experience of history both sweeping and personal. TRUMAN, EISENHOWER & KENNEDY Truman ended WWII with the atomic bomb, and then was re-elected to conduct the Korean War and continue the Cold War during the McCarthy Era. Kennedy succeeded and represented welcomed change, but assassination cut his promise short. JOHNSON, NIXON & FORD Johnson's legislative skills helped him win passage of the Great Society and the Voting Rights Acts, but he was defeated by the Vietnam War. Nixon tried to end the Vietnam War, however, the Watergate affair made him the first President forced to resign. CARTER, REAGAN & G.H.W. BUSH Ford kept the nation intact but lost his election bid to Carter, whose tenure was weakened by growing problems in the Middle East. Reagan, despite a recession and the Iran Contra scandal, reduced domestic spending and increased military spending. CLINTON & G.W. BUSH Clinton was elected due to unresolved social and economic problems, however, his Presidency was undermined by an apathetic public, a conservative Republican legislature, and personal scandals. 14 TWENTIETH CENTURY HISTORY: : WORLD WAR I This programs traces European military alliances, the annexation of Serbia- Herzegovina, and the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand and his wife. Ultimately this results in a declaration of war on all sides. The importance of this westward moving frontier to American values is made clear. 18 RENAISSANCE: THE SCIENTIST Copernicus, Kepler, Galileo, and Paracelsus struggled to create a new vision of the world, a vision which is still evolving. The activities of astrologers, artisans, and natural philosophers in late medieval times combined to create the practices of science. These early scientists all reacted differently to the threats of the Inquisition. RENAISSANCE: THE WARRIOR Traces the evolution of the image of the warrior as medieval knight into the more destructive, mechanized soldier of the modern era.
