1 PACKAGE 6: BBC HISTORY CHRISTIANITY IN WORLD HISTORY: CHRISTIAN ORIGINS IN THE MEDITERRANEAN Conflict about who Jesus was started immediately with the disputes between Peter and Paul. CHRISTIANITY IN WORLD HISTORY: MEDIEVAL CHRISTIAN EUROPE The barbarians who conquered Rome were gradually transformed by the scholarly and monastic traditions of St. Patrick, St. Benedict, Charlemagne, Hildegard of Bingen, and St. Francis of Assisi into a Christian civilization. CHRISTIANITY IN WORLD HISTORY: THE REFORMATION TO MODERN EUROPE The advent of science and printing pushed the medieval world toward modernism and individualism. But, it was Martin Luther who triggered the upheavals that led to Calvin, Loyola, Wesley, and later, Bonhoeffer and Vatican II. CHRISTIANITY IN WORLD HISTORY: EASTERN & RUSSIAN ORTHODOXY The Hagia Sophia temple in Constantinople may have inspired the adoption of Eastern Orthodoxy by Russia. Its influence on iconographic art, Russian literature, and the Russian people in conflict with Mongols and Communism is brought to life. 23: : : :
CHRISTIANITY IN WORLD HISTORY: LATIN AMERICAN CHRISTIAN TRADITIONS Considering the zeal of Spanish conquistadors for extracting conversions, gold, and slave labor from Indians, it is amazing these indigenous people adopted Christianity. CHRISTIANITY IN WORLD HISTORY: NORTH AMERICAN CHRISTIAN TRADITIONS The U.S. has more Christian diversity than any country in the world, yet its Puritan roots were close to a theocracy until the Great Awakening spread religious democracy across the land. CHRISTIANITY IN WORLD HISTORY: ASIAN CHRISTIAN TRADITIONS Christianity came to India with the Portuguese, but also influenced the dominant Hindu culture. How Christian traditions affected China and Korea is also examined in this history. CHRISTIANITY IN WORLD HISTORY: AFRICAN CHRISTIAN TRADITIONS Christianity in Africa had an uneven history after being brought by Europeans: white missionaries, returned slaves, and apartheid did not provide much promise. Yet, in the 20th century, it experienced a resurgence. EARLY AMERICANS IN HISTORY: LINCOLN AT GETTYSBURG Featuring an emotional reading of the complete Gettysburg Address, dramatizes how Abraham Lincoln reconciled the horrors of this battle. The underlying conflicts and the progress of the battle give background to the portrayal of his greatest achievement. 22: : : : :28 4-9
EARLY AMERICANS IN HISTORY: WASHINGTON AT VALLEY FORGE Learn how important George Washington's leadership was in ensuring that the Colonial army would win the Revolutionary War after this crisis. EARLY AMERICANS IN HISTORY: JEFFERSON AND THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE See how Thomas Jefferson was chosen by the Continental Congress, how the Declaration was amended, and how it failed to deal with the issue of slavery. EARLY AMERICANS IN HISTORY: BEN FRANKLIN: MAN OF FIRSTS Using many of the sites and artifacts associated with Benjamin Franklin in Philadelphia, this summary of his life will help young viewers understand his many achievements. EARLY AMERICANS IN HISTORY: BETSY ROSS MAKES A FLAG Betsy Ross, a patriot of the American Revolution, made many sacrifices: two of her husbands died in the war, she made pouches for soldiers to carry gunpowder, and she even had to tolerate British occupation of her house. EARLY AMERICANS IN HISTORY: HARRIET TUBMAN AND THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD The Underground Railroad was a route from south to north taken by thousands of slaves on their dangerous journey to freedom. Harriet Tubman was one of its most courageous conductors. GREAT CAMPAIGNS OF THE CIVIL WAR: FIRST BLOOD Fort Sumter revealed America's will to fight to preserve the nation; Manassas brought home the reality that the war would be prolonged; and Fort Donelson displayed the qualities of leadership needed to achieve victory. 10: : : : : :
GREAT CAMPAIGNS OF THE CIVIL WAR: THE CONFEDERATE RESURGENCE Lee now appeared on the offensive, but other major leaders appeared and several major battles led up to Gettysburg and Vicksburg, when the war finally turned in the North's favor. GREAT CAMPAIGNS OF THE CIVIL WAR: THE KILLING GROUNDS 1862 was the worst year of the war. Massive numbers of men were killed and wounded, and Lee seemed to be on the verge of victory, when Lincoln changed the nature of the war with the Emancipation Proclamation. GREAT CAMPAIGNS OF THE CIVIL WAR: THE TURNING TIDE AND THE FINAL PEACE With Grant now in charge of all the Union armies and Sherman marching through Georgia, the South begins to crumble. Lee soon realizes surrender is his only alternative. GREAT CIVILIZATIONS OF THE ANCIENT WORLD: SEVEN WONDERS OF THE ANCIENT WORLD Discover why the seven wonders of the ancient world were built and how they dazzled the ancients. GREAT CIVILIZATIONS OF THE ANCIENT WORLD: ANCIENT ISRAEL & JERUSALEM The Israelites evolved into a civilization when King David captured Jerusalem from other Semitic peoples. GREAT CIVILIZATIONS OF THE ANCIENT WORLD: ANCIENT ROME Discover how Rome spread its culture from England to the Persian Gulf to North Africa. 29: : : : : :
GREAT CIVILIZATIONS OF THE ANCIENT WORLD: POMPEII Relive Mt. Vesuvius' volcanic eruption, its devastation of the people and town of Pompeii, and the later excavation of this retreat for wealthy Romans. GREAT CIVILIZATIONS OF THE ANCIENT WORLD: ANCIENT ATHENS Discover the golden age of Athenian Greece and the history behind the Acropolis, the Parthenon and the Erechtheion. GREAT CIVILIZATIONS OF THE ANCIENT WORLD: ANCIENT GREECE Discover the Temple of Poseidon, the city of Corinth, the Temple of Zeus, Delphi's Temple of Apollo, and the island Santorini, perhaps the site of the Atlantis myth. GREAT CIVILIZATIONS OF THE ANCIENT WORLD: THE PYRAMIDS & ANCIENT EGYPT Discover how the great pyramids evolved, and what these tombs symbolized for ancient Egyptian civilization. GREAT CIVILIZATIONS OF THE ANCIENT WORLD: THE CITIES OF THE PHARAOHS Egyptians developed a nation along the Nile that lasted longer than any other ancient civilization. Karnak and the Great Temple of Abu Simbel are examples of a culture where dying was made into a glorious rite. MEXICAN INDIAN CIVILIZATIONS: OLMECS TO AZTECS The Spanish invaders marveled at Teotihaucan (Mexico City), and Montezuma turned over his empire to Cortez and his band of a few hundred soldiers. 23: : : : : :
MEXICAN INDIAN CIVILIZATIONS: THE MAYA Discover the pyramids and monumental cities built by the Yucatan people of Mexico, and examine the problems that ultimately led to their demise. GREAT HEARTS OF COURAGE: BILLY GRAHAM America s most famous Christian evangelist stressed a personal, positive relationship with God, or more specifically, with Jesus, using the Bible as his only authority. GREAT HEARTS OF COURAGE: MOTHER TERESA She was sent to India, became a teacher, then a nun, and after considerable struggle, founded a new order, The Missionaries of Charity, in the most poverty-stricken city in India, Calcutta. GREAT HEARTS OF COURAGE: ELIE WIESEL Despite his experiences in concentration camps and the loss of his family to the Nazis, Elie Wiesel remained a spokesperson for reconciliation and peace across all human divisions. GREAT HEARTS OF COURAGE: MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a Baptist minister who led some of the first Civil Rights actions in the 1950s, such as the Montgomery Bus Boycott, and later received the Nobel Peace Prize. GREAT HEARTS OF COURAGE: C.S. LEWIS C.S. Lewis, widely known today for his children's book series, The Chronicles of Narnia, was also one of the supreme Christian apologists, adult novelists, and literary critic-historians of the 20th century. 25: : : : : :
GREAT HEARTS OF COURAGE: ALEKSANDR SOLZHENITSYN Even though he joined Soviet organizations and the Russian army, Solzhenitsyn grew to despise Stalin. When his letters exposed his feelings to the Communist leaders, he was sent to the Gulag Archipelago prison system. GREAT HEARTS OF COURAGE: NELSON MANDELA Mandela spent 27 years in prison, but was such an example of non-violent prisoner leadership, that worldwide demands led to his release. THE ARK OF THE HEBREW COVENANT Mandela spent 27 years in prison, but was such an example of non-violent prisoner leadership, that worldwide demands led to his release. THE BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG Moving between the personal and the epic, this reenactment realistically shows how this battle, which started accidentally, changed the course of the American Civil War. BUILDING THE PANAMA CANAL Despite insurmountable odds, rough terrain, blazing heat and tropical diseases, the Panama Canal was completed in Theodore Roosevelt drove this patriotic project, which made the U.S. a world power. CZAR NICHOLAS II & THE ROMANOVS Nicholas II, ruling by divine right, has no sense of the impending disasters of his country. World War I and the Russian Revolution destroy his idyll. 29: : : : : :
D-DAY & WORLD WAR II Nicholas II, ruling by divine Peaceful, contemporary scenes of Normandy's idyllic beaches are contrasted with documentary footage of the D-Day landing, one of the decisive events of World War II. THE DEAD SEA SCROLLS Scrolls found in caves near the Dead Sea turn out to be one of the greatest finds in archaeology; older than any existing Bible manuscripts, they corroborate certain of its passages and events. THE DESTRUCTION OF POMPEII Descriptions of the haunting beauty and exotic details of historical Roman town Pompeii precede a dramatic reenactment of the Mt. Vesuvius eruption that buried it and its people. THE FIRST ASCENT OF MT. EVEREST On the same day Elizabeth II became queen, Edmund Hillary and his Sherpa guide, Tenzing Norgay, became the first men to reach the top of the world and return. HENRY VIII & ANNE BOLEYN King Henry VIII, though married, courts Anne Boleyn, then declares himself head of a new church when Rome refuses to grant him a divorce from his first wife. PEARL HARBOR & WORLD WAR II A sense of impending doom builds with a live action reenactment of the peaceful life on Oahu as Japanese planes wing toward it. 8: : : : : :
PHARAOH TUTANKHAMEN Explore the mystery of why Pharaoh Tutankhamen's tomb remained hidden and unplundered for so long. Historical records and forensic evidence suggest Tut was murdered and secretly buried. THE TAJ MAHAL & SHAH JAHAN Shah Jahan was a Mughal who married a Persian princess, and their self-indulgent but romantic life together impelled him to build a monument to love when she died. THE TITANIC SINKS A cautionary tale of the hubris of modern civilization, the Titanic's tragedy is also that of the architect who knew he had failed when he went down with his ship. IN AMERICA S HISTORY: THE MAKING OF AMERICA S PRESIDENCY America grew out of the independent thinking of its early colonists and citizens, and required a new kind of leader who respected the rights specified in the Declaration of Independence and Constitution. GEORGE WASHINGTON Washington's establishment of Presidential dignity with democratic forbearance, and his voluntary relinquishing of power to a successor, remain his greatest historic legacies. JOHN ADAMS & THOMAS JEFFERSON Adams and Jefferson had different temperaments, yet were able to handle the crises of their times and still transfer power peacefully. 9: : : : : :
MADISON & MONROE These two Virginians, the last Presidential veterans of the Revolution, dealt with foreign threats and the slavery question as the country continued to expand. J.Q. ADAMS, JACKSON & VAN BUREN John Quincy Adams loses office after one term to the astonishingly popular Andrew Jackson, who is followed by his disciple Martin Van Buren. HARRISON, TYLER, POLK & TAYLOR As the Westward Movement and Manifest Destiny gained momentum, controversies about slavery, border disputes, and territorial rights were reflected in Presidential conflicts. FILLMORE, PIERCE & BUCHANAN Three Presidents preceded the Civil War. They compromised with southerners, the Dred Scott decision occurred, John Brown led his raid, and the Republican Party was founded. ABRAHAM LINCOLN While he delayed emancipating the slaves and suspended some legal rights during the Civil War, his overriding dedication to keeping the Union intact is considered one of the greatest accomplishments of the Presidency. He is remembered for his great writing and tragic character. 12: : : : :
JOHNSON, GRANT & HAYES The Reconstruction period damaged the Presidency with Johnson's impeachment, Grant's corruption scandal, and Hayes election fraud. GARFIELD, ARTHUR, CAND, & HARRISON When President Garfield was assassinated, few expected Arthur to be the strong reformer he turned out to be. Industrialization, urbanization, and immigration problems led Cleveland to be reform-minded, but he was defeated by Harrison, who became expansionist. CAND, McKINLEY, & THEODORE ROOSEVELT Cleveland was re-elected, but economic problems plagued his tenure. McKinley was lucky to become President during an economic upturn, and he and Roosevelt used growing American wealth to project military power around the world. IN AMERICA S HISTORY: TAFT, WILSON, HARDING, COOLIDGE, & HOOVER Taft began as T.R's chosen successor, but quarreling split the party, allowing Wilson to become the first Democratic President of the 20th century. His Republican successors Harding, Coolidge, and Hoover promoted the business boom of the 20's, but economic and military shadows increased internationally. 10: : : :
FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT FDR s character, as well as his wife's, affected his era. Moving documentary footage creates an experience of history both sweeping and personal. TRUMAN, EISENHOWER & KENNEDY Truman ended WWII with the atomic bomb, and then was re-elected to conduct the Korean War and continue the Cold War during the McCarthy Era. Kennedy succeeded and represented welcomed change, but assassination cut his promise short. JOHNSON, NIXON & FORD Johnson's legislative skills helped him win passage of the Great Society and the Voting Rights Acts, but he was defeated by the Vietnam War. Nixon tried to end the Vietnam War, however, the Watergate affair made him the first President forced to resign. CARTER, REAGAN & G.H.W. BUSH Ford kept the nation intact but lost his election bid to Carter, whose tenure was weakened by growing problems in the Middle East. Reagan, despite a recession and the Iran Contra scandal, reduced domestic spending and increased military spending. CLINTON & G.W. BUSH Clinton was elected due to unresolved social and economic problems, however, his Presidency was undermined by an apathetic public, a conservative Republican legislature, and personal scandals. G.W. Bush took office, despite losing the popular vote, and focused his attention on terrorism. 10: : : : :
TWENTIETH CENTURY HISTORY: : WORLD WAR I This programs traces European military alliances, the annexation of Serbia- Herzegovina, and the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand and his wife. Ultimately this results in a declaration of war on all sides. TWENTIETH CENTURY HISTORY: : THE GREAT DEPRESSION A worldwide economic collapse that began in 1929, the Great Depression lasted more than a decade, ending only with the onset of World War II and its need for military production. TWENTIETH CENTURY HISTORY: : THE COLD WAR The Yalta Conference divided Europe into Eastern and Western sections and ultimately created Iron Curtain politics and the Cold War. When the Korean War lasts much longer than expected, a national phobia of Communist takeover erupts in the United States. COLONIAL LIFE: FAMILY & WORK IN REVOLUTIONARY AMERICA The relationships of children and parents, of husbands and wives, and how the role each person played affected colonial life, is reenacted in this program. COLONIAL LIFE: PIONEER LIFE IN REVOLUTIONARY AMERICA The difficult, yet free life of the first wave of settlers to cross the Appalachian Mountains is colorfully recreated. The importance of this westward moving frontier to American values is made clear. COLONIAL LIFE: SOCIAL CLASS IN REVOLUTIONARY AMERICA Even though the availability of land gave American colonists more self-determination than their European cousins, there were still class divisions. How these differences were overcome as the Revolution approached is explored in this program. 30: : : : : :
COLONIAL LIFE: VALUES IN REVOLUTIONARY AMERICA The powerful influences of family, social class, religion, and self-government in the colonies created a unique set of values. This program uses historical vignettes to reveal those values on the eve of the Revolution. COLONIAL LIFE: ROANOKE: THE LOST COLONY This live-action program features realistic reenactments, both in Elizabethan England and America, and at the beginning of the European settlement in the New World. U.S. HISTORY FIELD TRIP: HAIL TO THE CHIEF: PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS Presidential Elections bring the electoral process to life. Students will learn about political 'platforms' and party 'tickets,' as well as fascinating facts about former presidents that will stimulate classroom discussion. U.S. HISTORY FIELD TRIP: ROSA PARKS AND THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT Discover the life of Rosa Parks, from the days of Jim Crow laws, which allowed for segregation in schools, on buses and trains, to her involvement as officer of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. U.S. HISTORY FIELD TRIP: ROAD TO REVOLUTION: HISTORIC BOSTON In 'Historic Boston,' students discover how events in the at city set the colonies on the road to revolution and independence. U.S. HISTORY FIELD TRIP: ROAD TO REVOLUTION: HISTORIC PHILADELPHIA In this program Benjamim Franklin describes what really went on behind closed doors as our founding fathers hammered out the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. 20: : : : : :19 4-8
U.S. HISTORY FIELD TRIP: PLIMOTH PLANTATION This program takes students on an adventurous journey back to 1620 and Plimoth Plantation to see life as it was lived by the Pilgrims who settled there. U.S. HISTORY FIELD TRIP: COLONIAL S Students take an educational and entertaining journey back to Colonial America to learn what life was like in the original thirteen colonies. RISE & FALL OF ROMAN CIVILIZATION: VILLAGE TO REPUBLIC Explores the birth of the Roman Empire, from Romulus and Remus to the Romans' rebellion against their Etruscan rulers, creating a new republic based on democratic principles. RISE & FALL OF ROMAN CIVILIZATION: MILITARY CONQUESTS Witness the expansion of Rome as it extended from central Italy to beyond the entire Mediterranean region, as well as how internal and external forces began to threaten it. RISE & FALL OF ROMAN CIVILIZATION: THE EMPIRE Julius Caesar seizes power, but his assassination fueled a fight for succession, which continued even after Emperor Augustus' reign of peace. RISE & FALL OF ROMAN CIVILIZATION: IMPERIALISM & SLAVERY Population growth, the rise of slavery, barriers to further geographic expansion, and economic crises all began to slowly erode the foundation of the Roman empire by the 1st century A.D. 24: : : : : :
RISE & FALL OF ROMAN CIVILIZATION: DECADENCE & DECLINE As Rome began its decline, several attempts were made to preserve it. War, persecution, and the division of the Roman Empire were all tried, but in 476 A.D. the last Roman emperor stepped down. RISE & FALL OF ROMAN CIVILIZATION: THE RISE OF CHRISTIANITY When disease, invaders, and cultural decay threatened Rome s foundations, the population sought spiritual alternatives, and Christianity became the state religion. RENAISSANCE: A WORLD REBORN This overview ties together themes explored in depth in the other programs in the Renaissance Series, which are based on the most important archetypal individuals of this period: the artist, the dissenter, the prince, the scientist, and the warrior. RENAISSANCE: THE DISSENTER The actions of Jan Hus, John Wycliffe, Martin Luther led to the Reformation, and its affect on the whole of Europe in the late Renaissance are dramatized, primarily in the devastations of the Thirty Years' War. RENAISSANCE: THE ARTIST Through the trials and triumphs of Brunelleschi, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Titian, a great cultural change from craftsman to rebellious artist took place in Renaissance Europe. RENAISSANCE: THE PRINCE European thinkers such as Niccolo Machiavelli and rulers such as Cosimo de' Medici, King Philip of Spain, and Queen Elizabeth of England left a legacy that continues to influence statesmen and politicians. 28: : : : : :
RENAISSANCE: THE SCIENTIST Copernicus, Kepler, Galileo, and Paracelsus struggled to create a new vision of the world, a vision which is still evolving. The activities of astrologers, artisans, and natural philosophers in late medieval times combined to create the practices of science. These early scientists all reacted differently to the threats of the Inquisition. RENAISSANCE: THE WARRIOR Traces the evolution of the image of the warrior as medieval knight into the more destructive, mechanized soldier of the modern era. The advent of gunpowder during this period in Europe hastened this change, making codes of chivalry seem antiquated. 29: : "CCC! Streaming Media s BBC History has been an amazing supplement for science and history. One of my children is a visual leaner. We read about a subject then watch a quick video or vice versa. Access to the huge video library has significantly enhanced our classes - absolute value added! We love it and recommend it!" - M. Bess, Co-op Member
