G Anglican Chant (Parratt) IVE the King thy judgments, O God,* and thy righteousness unto the King s son. 2 Then shall he judge thy people according unto right,* and defend the poor. 3 The mountains also shall bring peace,* and the little hills righteousness unto the people. 4 He shall keep the simple folk by their right,* defend the children of the poor, and punish the wrong-doer. 5 They shall fear thee, as long as the sun and moon endureth,* from one generation to another. 6 He shall come down like the rain into a fleece of wool,* even as the drops that water the earth. 7 In his time shall the righteous flourish;* yea, and abundance of peace, so long as the moon endureth. 18 Blessed be the Lord God, even the God of Israel,* which only doeth wondrous things; 19 And blessed be the Name of his majesty for ever:* and all the earth shall be filled with his majesty. Amen, Amen. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,* and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,* world without end. Amen.
2 The Epistle Romans 15:4-13 Hymn 76 The Holy Gospel Saint Matthew 3:1-12 Sermon Father Daniels The Nicene Creed The Peace The Greetings (Please be seated.) At the Offertory, Anthem T WINCHESTER NEW Orlando Gibbons ( ) HIS is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him: Who art thou? And he confessed and denied not, and said plainly, I am not the Christ. And they asked him: What art thou then? Art thou Elias? And he said, I am not. Art thou the prophet? And he answered, No. Then said they unto him, What art thou? That we may give an answer unto them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself? And he said, I am the voice of him that crieth in the wilderness: make straight the way of the Lord. The Great Thanksgiving Sanctus and Benedictus The Lord s Prayer The Breaking of the Bread Invitation to Communion Saint John 1:19-23 All baptized Christians are invited to receive Holy Communion. The Sacrament is distributed at the High Altar and, for convenience and accessibility, also at the Chantry Chapel Altar. At the Communion, Agnus Dei and Motet R ORATE caeli desuper, et nubes pluant iustum: aperiatur terra, et germinet salvatorem. Benedixisti, Domine, terram tuam: avertisti captivitatem Iacob. Gloria Patri, et Filio: et Spiritui Sancto. Sicut erat in principio, et nunc, et semper: et in saecula saeculorum. Amen. William Byrd (c ) Drop down, ye heavens, from above, and let the skies pour forth righteousness, let the earth be fruitful and bring forth a Saviour. Lord, thou art become gracious unto thy land: thou hast turned away the captivity of Jacob. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Introit for the Feast of the Annunciation; Isaiah 45, Psalm 85 The Postcommunion Prayer The Blessing and Dismissal Hymn 73 ST. STEPHEN Voluntary Prelude and Fugue in a, BWV 543 Johann Sebastian Bach ( ) Healing and intercessory prayer will be offered by clergy and trained lay volunteers in the Chantry Chapel at the conclusion of today s service for anyone who desires it.

Plainsong (Mode i) Voluntary Fuga sopra il Magnificat, BWV 733 Johann Sebastian Bach ( ) 5:15 P.M. ORGAN RECITAL Kirk Rich Houston, TX MUSIC NOTES Born in Nürnberg in 1564, Hans Leo Hassler came from musical stock. His father Isaac was the local organist, and in 1584 Hans Leo travelled to Venice to receive his musical education from Andrea Gabrieli. Hassler s rich and varied musical output comprises liturgical masses and motets alongside many instrumental works. Displaying a combination of the old and new styles, his Missa Dixit Maria is a classic example of the parody mass, where the main musical motifs used in the Mass are based on the composer s motet of the same name. Taking the text from the account of the visitation of the Angel Gabriel to Mary, the musical lines flow from the inspiration of the Virgin Mary herself: Mary said to the Angel: behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord, let it be done to me, according to your word. The Gentlemen of the Choir will sing the companion motet at Evensong on Saturday, December 10. The greens today are offered to the glory of God and in memory of the following: Arthur Trumbull Hill, Margaret Crane Hurlbut, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Hamilton Kissam and Linda Griffith Vorsanger. Sunday Services: 8, 9, 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday Services: 8 a.m., 12:10 and 5:30 p.m. (The Tuesday 12:10 p.m. Eucharist includes a healing service.) Saturday Services: 12:10 and 4 p.m. Choral Evensong on Saturday, December 10, at 4 p.m. This service will be sung by the Gentlemen of the Choir.
4 Monday through Friday at 12 p.m. Prayers at the Shrine of our Lady of Fifth Avenue Intercessions may be sent via the website by using the Prayer Request Tab or by leaving a written request in the box near the Shrine itself. The clergy are available to hear confessions by appointment. SUNDAY, DECEMBER 11 - THE THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT (GAUDETE) 11 A.M. FESTAL EUCHARIST Sermon by the Right Reverend Michael Lewis Bishop in Cyprus & the Gulf 1 P.M. CHRISTMAS PAGEANT 4 P.M. FESTAL EVENSONG Sermon by Mr. Horvath, Seminarian PARISH NOTICES If you are a visitor this morning, we welcome you to Saint Thomas Church and hope that you are with us again soon. Nursery care is available for infants and young children of parents attending the 9 and 11 a.m. liturgies. If your child would like to attend the nursery, please ask one of our ushers or staff who will kindly direct you. Once at the nursery, parents will be asked to sign their children in and will receive a silent pager for use during the service. Sunday School is on recess and will resume January 8. Following the 11 a.m. service today, the Choir School Boys are holding a Bake Sale during coffee hour in Andrew Hall. Proceeds from this event will benefit the School. Please stop by to support our Choristers in their endeavors. The Prayer Shawl Ministry s annual Christmas Sale will be held today after the 11 a.m. service. 5 Christmas Pageant: The Saint Thomas Sunday School and Youth Group invite you to attend their annual Christmas pageant on Sunday, December 11, at 1 p.m. This year s pageant is a new production for Saint Thomas, and is an adaptation of the children s story by Henry Van Dyke, The Story of the Other Wise Man. The pageant is free, and all are welcome to attend. The Blessing of the Crèche is a beautiful service designed especially for children and families on Thursday, December 22 at 5:30 p.m. Children will read the Christmas Story and lead the prayers, the crèche will be assembled, and the boy choristers will sing. Children are invited to come dressed up as characters from the Nativity Mary, Joseph, Shepherds, Wise men, Stars, Angels, Animals (Ox, Sheep and Donkey), etc. so that we can make a living crèche. The service lasts under an hour, and there is also story-time the perfect way to prepare for Christmas with your children, grandchildren, nephews and nieces. Year-end contributions to Saint Thomas Church and Choir School. As the New Year approaches, and you consider your year-end gifts, please remember Saint Thomas Church and Choir School. All donations, including cash gifts, must be postmarked by December 31, or received in the Finance Office by noon on Friday, December 30, to qualify as a deduction for 2016 tax purposes. Likewise, gifts of stock must be received in the Church s investment account by December 30, For stock transfer instructions or other questions, please contact Ann Hall Kaplan at akaplan@saintthomaschurch.org or ext 414. This is also a gentle reminder to pay all pledges to the 2016 Every Member Canvass by December 31, (If your circumstances have changed and you are not able to pay off your remaining pledge balance, please contact Ann Hall Kaplan.) All members of the Parish are asked to consider whether or not they know of any boys who would be potential choristers. Father Wallace and Daniel Hyde are making a big push for chorister recruitment following a recent article about the Choir in the New York Times. Please spare a moment to think whether or not you know people with children, or whether you have children in your own families, who may be suitable for a choristership. We are looking for boys with musical potential and not necessarily proven ability. The life of a chorister is a busy one, and alongside the world-class musical education which the boys receive, our Choir School provides a rigorous and balanced academic education which sees our choristers moving on to competitive places at highly regarded high schools. The overall package is second to none, and you are strongly encouraged to put any likely candidates in contact with Daniel Hyde (dhyde@saintthomaschurch.org), and he will invite boys and their parents to meet informally to discuss things in greater detail. Information sheets are available in the Narthex; please take some away with you to pass on to suitable people, and display wherever possible. The Bookstore, located on the first floor of the parish house, is open following this service. Currently in stock is a selection of Advent Calendars, books, Christmas cards and Choir boys and Angel ornaments. Also in stock is the rediscovered and fully illustrated for the first time, The Tale of Kitty-In-Boots, written by Beatrix Potter and illustrated by Quentin Blake and the 2017 Christian Pocket Diary. The Bookstore is also open tomorrow, Monday, December 5, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Tuesday, December 6, from 1 to 5 p.m.; Thursday, December 8, from 1 to 5 p.m.; and Saturday, December 10, following the 4 p.m. Choral Evensong. Major credit cards are accepted. The Soup Kitchen meets every Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. in the parish house to prepare bag lunches for distribution on foot along eight routes in mid-manhattan beginning at 11 a.m. Distribution is completed about 12:15 p.m. You are welcome to join this ministry to the homeless. For further information, please contact Frank Reinauer ADULT CHRISTIAN EDUCATION The sweet scroll and the seventh trumpet. The Sunday morning class takes up the tenth and eleventh chapters of the Revelation of Saint John the Divine on December 4. At long last, John hears the seventh trumpet sound. Given the earthly tribulation that precedes it, what happens next may be surprising. The class meets on the 5 th floor of the parish house at 10 a.m.
6 No Abiding City: The Surprising Realities of Christian Presence in the Middle East. On Sunday, December 11, Saint Thomas welcomes the Rt. Rev. Michael Lewis, Bishop of the Diocese of Cyprus and the Gulf in the Province of Jerusalem and the Middle East. Bishop Lewis talks about the life of the Church in that region in a special lecture offered at 10 a.m. on the fifth floor of the parish house. Bible study continues on Friday, December 9 at 12:45 p.m. on the second floor of the parish house. Young Adults Bring-Along & Sing-Along : If you are a young adult, we invite you and a friend to join us on Sunday, December 11, at 6 p.m. at the Rectory for an evening of caroling and holiday cheer. Please RSVP to Michael Horvath at mhorvath@saintthomaschurch.org by Tuesday, December 6 as space is limited for this event. The Rector s Christian Doctrine Class is a comprehensive introduction to the Christian Faith as understood by the Episcopal Church and based on its catechism. The first session is on Tuesday, January 17 at 6:30 p.m. and lasts one hour. The sessions run every Tuesday until April 4 when there is a break for Holy Week and Easter. Sessions resume on April 25 until May 16. The service of Confirmation and Reception of those from other churches will be on Sunday, May 21 at 11 a.m. The course is for anyone who wishes to explore the faith, for those who want to be baptized or confirmed, those who have been baptized in another church but wish to be received as members of the Episcopal Church, and those who want to refresh their understanding of the faith. Further details are on the website; the classes last one hour and refreshments are provided. The class uses multi-media presentations, bible study, discussion and traditional teaching. If you want to register for a place, please contact our wisdom-year Seminarian, Michael Horvath - MHorvath@SaintThomasChurch.org; anyone is welcome to come to any session. For regular updates on theology at Saint Thomas, jdaniels@saintthomaschurch.org to be included in the weekly distribution list. ASSISTING CLERGY The Reverend Michael D.
