1 FIRST CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH OF ORANGE CITY UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST Issue 5 May 2017 Sunday, May 14 th 2017 Worship Service on Sunday at 10:30 AM Church Office Open Monday Friday 9:00 AM 1:00 PM firstucc_ocy@yahoo.com Website: No matter who you are or where you are on Life's Journey, you are welcome here.
2 Pray for Peace April 26 th marks the 80 th anniversary of the infamous day when Nazi planes appeared in the skies over the small Basque town of Guernica. For over three hours they bombed and strafed the town, indiscriminately killing men, women, and children, reducing three quarters of the town to rubble. Three weeks later Pablo Picasso would begin painting one of the most iconic images of the 20th century, appropriately titled Guernica. The painting was first exhibited in 1937 at the Paris International Exposition, about three months after the bombing. From there it would be exhibited at various cities in England, and then made its first showing in the US in 1939 at the San Francisco Museum of Art. From there it would move to the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, where it would remain for many years. Following intense negotiations, it was returned to Spain in In 1985, a tapestry reproduction of the painting was hung in UN Headquarters in front of the Security Council room, where, in 2003 it would become an object of controversy when it was covered up just prior to a news conference at the UN by Colin Powell and John Negroponte during the lead up to the beginning of the Iraq war. It has been debated as to whether it was the media or the Bush administration that insisted that it be covered up. Regardless of who ordered it, the fact that it was covered over bears testimony to what a powerful anti-war statement the painting is. Its stark images of people running and crying out, of a screaming mother holding her dead child, as well as a disemboweled horse and a somewhat dazed looking bull (characteristic of Spanish bullfights, so often associated with death) become not only a vivid reminder of a brutal attack on a small Spanish town, but a statement on the horrors of war in general. (Some years ago I had the privilege of seeing the painting while it was still in New York, and can attest to the strong emotional impact it can have on a viewer.) One would think that by this point in history humanity might have matured to the point where conflicts could be resolved in a non-violent manner, but that is far from the case. The 20 th century was the most violent in recorded history, and the 21 st is well on track to becoming just as bad if not worse. With all the violence and saber-rattling taking place at this time it is particularly important that we followers of the Prince of Peace be advocating, speaking out, and praying for peace to prevail on earth. Let us pray for the day when events such as the bombing of Guernica are nothing more than a memory of a distant and much more brutal time in the history of our world. Amen Blessings, David Westcott
3 MEMO FROM THE MODERATOR At a congregational meeting on April 23, June Carlson, Jean Crowley, Doris and Lionel Ford, Patt Kline, Lynn Manz and Barbara Peters were elected to serve on the Pastoral Search Committee for a Settled Pastor. As members of the church, we thank them for their willingness to serve in this very important way and pledge our support to them in the coming months as they move forward in their search. In the Litany for Commissioning a Pastoral Search Committee they pledged with God s guidance and our prayers, to be open to the leading of the Holy Spirit in all they do, say and decide. They will endeavor to establish a harmonious working relationship within the committee; maintain consistent attendance at Search Committee meetings; be open and patient listeners to each other and to the congregation; to listen carefully to our hopes and dreams and consult with the members in the development of a description of our church community and the style of pastoral leadership we seek; maintain strict confidentiality in all they read, say and hear, protecting both the privacy of each other and of potential candidates; to review all profiles with open minds and hearts, treating all candidates fairly and justly; to seek decisions not made by majority rule, but by the coming together of minds, hearts and souls in a consensus that will build a firm foundation for the effective future mission and ministry of this church. As members, we pledge to be patient with the committee and to respect their need to be confidential in their work. We recognize that the work of our search committee is a difficult assignment and will take much effort. We pray for them and offer our support and words of encouragement throughout this time. We continue to look forward and pray that God will lead our church in determining who will minister with us in the future as we continue to do God s work. We offer our prayers and support to the Search Committee and look forward with hope and anticipation. Blessings and Peace, Jo Pritchett

As in the past, the shop will be closed during the hottest summer months. Tentative closing date is June 3. Tentative opening date is Sept 9. To all volunteers who have kept the shop open this spring MANY THANKS. Have a great summer and please plan to help with this project again next fall. March Mission Project.. A Great success!!! Our Church family donated $320 for One Great Hour of Sharing.. an extraordinary example of generosity. Bake Sale The Bake Sale in April was also successful. Sales totaled $134, which was donated to Duvall Homes. The items that were not sold were also sent thre so residents could enjoy homemade treats. Thanks to all who baked, then brought, and then bought. A special Thank You to Errin Brown, who designed the flyer used to publicize the sale. The Neighborhood Center in Deland is dedicated to serving the hungry and the homeless in our area. This assistance is needed especially during the winter months. Nonperishable food items can be brought to JMH at any time, and a Mission Board member will deliver them to the Center for distribution. to the homeless and hungry in our area. May Mission Project Strengthen The Church, one of the five annual projects encouraged by the UCC. The purpose is to build the future of the UCC. It is largely supports youth ministries and full time leaders for new churches in parts of the country where the UCC voice has not been heard. Our contributions will plant new churches, awaken new ideas in existing churches, and develop the spiritual life in many youth and young adults.
