Mr. Mck ws life-long member of the llnited Presbyterin Church t Nnt Florerce, This Hugh Mck is from the fmily of Mcks from Irelnd who settled in Armugtr, Indin Co, PA. I believe they nmed Ar:mugh for the re in Irelnd from which they cme. They were ll Protestnts. There re lot of Mck fmilies still in tht re. Armugh nd New Florence wene ner the route of the Pennsylvni Cnl on which the Hugh Mck posted evidently worked. Tht cnl ws built from Estern Pennsylvni to Hollidysburg, then over the mountins on the Portge RR to ohnstown, nd then the cnl to Pittsburgh. Most of the workers on the two divisions Cnl nd Portge RR were Irish emigrnts, lthough I m descended from some Germn Stonemsons who cut the stone in whidr the ties on the Portge RR were ttched. The Mck fmily I m interested in goes bck [s fr s I cn trce] to ]ohn Mck who mrried Mry Reilly nd lived in Benningtory Allegheny Twp, Blir County. I cnnot trce him bck further. He ws Ctholic. It is possible he ws not Irish, but Germn, the nme being originllly spelled Muk/Muck. There were some frmers of this nme in Allegheny Turp. Mny of John Mck's descendnts lived in the Gllitzinre. Thereis lsomckfmilyfromsomerset County, nd oseph Mck from tht fmily lived in Ebensburg fot some time, nd hd bout 10 children there. I m not sure if he ws Ctholic, but llthe childrcnwere bptized t Holy Nme Ctholic Church. It might hve been his wife who ws Ctholic. Some of these child-ren moved to Altoon. ' P W Millich <willichs$@hotmil cottt> From Doug Muck We should remember tht thousnds of Gennns were sent to Irelnd in the erly 170Os by Englnd. The Germns were driven out of Germny by mini ice ge nd over one million of them fled to London where they were mintined until Englnd begn sending them to Cnd, the Americn Colonies, nd helnd. I found MAUCK fmily tht immigrted to Knss in the mid 1800's from lrelnd. After L50 yers nd six genertions in heln4 Im sue they considered themselves thoroughly Irish. They would hve intermrried severl times with the Irish nd some my hve chnged religions. I ws interested tht in Chin, our surnme (MAUCK) ws chnged to Chinese chrcters for Chinese documents. The two chrcters hve the sounds MOA nd KER. When they re sid together, they pproximte the sound of MOCK, t lest close enough for the Chinese. The chrcter combintion hs no mening in Chinese...nd tht is probbly good thing. One of those fmily stories, ProPos of nothing in prticulr: My prents lived on narmy post in the 1930s. Next door to them ws the fril, elderly Jpnese widow of long-decesed Army officer. My mother tried to be helpfulto the wornn, who lived lone. When she needed nry mother's help with something, she would cll out from her front porch "Miss Mockie, Miss Mockie!" (our lst nme ws Muk). One dy, my mother herd the fmilir clf looked out t the porch next door but sw nothing. She continued to her the cll nd finlly went next door - only to find tht the ldy's prrot ws "clling" her from its cge on the porch.. Doig Muel{ presmtly rcsiiling in Chin! Der Ancestot Your tombstone stnds mong the rest, neglected nd lone, The nme, the dte, re chiseled out in wetherbeten stone. It redres out for ll to see, it is too lte to mouln, You did not know I would exist you died nd I ws born. Yet ech of us re prt of you, in flesh, in blood, in bone, And in my brest there bets pulse entirely not my own. Der ncestoq, the spce you left those mny yers go Is filled tody by ll of us who would hve lovedyou so. Fll2005 Mck, Colordo Submitted by fnice Tompkins While we wel visiting in Fruit, Colordo,I mn_ ged to find brief history of nerby Mckwhichgvethe nme of the fellow it ws nmed fter. So Mck is sub_ urb of Fruit4 which is suburb of Grnd Junction in Mes County, Colordo, ll of them strung out long I-20 ner the Uth line. This is from the locl informtion prt of the Mes County phone book: MACK. In fr western Mes County is the villge of Mck. It ws compny town, built in 1i04; the Brb"er {.s.nht Pving Compny of phildelphi cquired Gilsonite sem in the rugged Uinth mountinlountrv northwest of Mck. Gilsonite, or unithite, is solid hrd shiny form of petroleum... In 19Ot Brber built the nrrow guge Uinth Ril_ rod to bring Gilsonite to the terminuj t tr{ck, where it ws reloded on the Denver nd Rio Grnde West Ril_ rod. john Mckws the president of Brber nd the little town borrowed his nme... So there it is. The little town ws nmed fter John ftyf yhg ws_president of BrberAsphlt pving of phil_ 49lphi, PA. Is tht enough inforrrition to ide-ntify this fellow? Mck's heydy ws from i.904 to the mid-1930,s, - when the Depression more or less killed it off. Todv there is generl store/gs sttiory n I-20 exit, nd fei houses. Mybe brieems to me tht occsionl semisordid ctivities t the br used to mke our locl pper when we lived t Fruit. Dncing girts mybe? - - As to the Gilsonite plnt (which looked like smll oil refinery), it ws ctive during the 50s, when my hus_ bnd ws growing up t Fruit, untit the grys, when it ws converted to n ordinry refinery then ws slowly dis_ mntled nd then dosed t the behest of ourlocl greenies, who disliked the refinery smell tht occsion$ wfted cross our end of the vlley; of course, the price of oil ws dropping drmticlly too. Gilsonite in the 50s ws used to mke phonogrph records blck nd then hd some uses in mnufcturing btteries (should hve tken better short_ hndnotes);it ws sort of powdery precursorof oil shle.
