The text The Revised Common Lectionry s gospel text for this week is Luke 22:14 23:56, or Luke 23:1-49. The first option is fr too much to cover in single Bible study with ny depth, s it begins with the Lord s Supper nd ends with Jesus buril, including ll the intervening events. The second text is lso chllenging, s it begins with Jesus being brought before Pilte nd ends with his deth on the cross. It is more mngeble, however, nd will be our choice. The Snhedrin The Snhedrin, which Luke clls the ssembly of the elders, ws the supreme governing body of the Jewish people t tht time. It consisted of seventy-one priests, scribes, nd elders nd held, under Rome, wide-rnging powers of self-government. The ruling council found Jesus worthy of deth, but Rome did not grnt it the power of cpitl punishment. Herod The re we think of s Isrel ws ruled by Herod the Gret from 37 BCE until bout 4 BCE. Herod ws ppointed by Rome s client King of Jude round 40 BCE, but didn t gin full control until 37 BCE. He ws known s gret builder hence the nme Herod the Gret but lso s prnoid ruler who coldly ssssinted nyone he perceived s thret, including his Jewish wife Mrimne nd her sons. After Herod died, his kingdom ws divided mong three of his sons. The northern nd estern res of Iture nd Trcheonitis were llotted to Herod Philip, perhps the most competent of the three, nd he ruled there from 4 BC to 34 CE Herod Antipter (better known s Antips) ws given chrge of Glilee, which he ruled from the city of Tiberius, which he built on the western shore of the Se of Glilee, from 4 BCE to 39 CE. Antips fmously divorced his first wife nd mrried his brother Philip s wife, Herodis, fter she divorced Philip to mrry Antips. John the Bptist shrply criticized the rrngement, nd lost his hed s result (Mtt. 14:1-4). Herod Archelus ws put in chrge of Jude nd Smri, but ruled only from 4 BCE to 6 CE. Archelus ws so cruel nd incompetent tht the Romns deposed him, mde Jude procurtorship, nd ultimtely put series of prefects in chrge of Jeruslem nd the surrounding re. Pontius Pilte ws the fifth of these, ruling from CE. Thus, when the Jewish leders in Jeruslem brought Jesus before Pilte, who didn t relly wnt to condemn Jesus, he tried to defer his cse off to Herod Antips, who ruled Jesus home re of Glilee. 5 Nurturing Fith April 14, 2019

The lte Mlcolm Tolbert observed tht mny genertions of Christins hve voided the implictions of the cross by blming it on the Jews, while filing to see tht the people who killed Jesus were no different thn we re, preferring to silence the voice of God nd tke over the world for ourselves. This, he wrote, is the ultimte idoltry. In this sense the crucifixion is not only something tht hppened long time go; it tkes plce every dy in our own world ( Luke, in the Brodmn Bible Commentry, Vol. 9 [Brodmn Press, 1970], 178). How do you rect to this sttement? Simon of Cyrene Cyrene ws city in northern Afric, locted where Tripoli, the cpitl of Liby, is tody. Mrk tells us tht Simon ws the fther of Rufus nd Alexnder, who must hve been known to his reders in the erly church (Mk. 15:21). Prdise The word for prdise seems bit unusul, given tht we would expect Jesus to ffirm tht the thief would join him in heven, or in the kingdom. The term trnslted prdise (prdeisō) is derived from n Old Persin word mening enclosure, with the extended mening of grden or prk. Jesus prediction of Jeruslem s destruction ws peppered with comments designed to intensify its impct. Tht dy would bring such suffering to them nd their children tht they would clim brren women most blessed, turnround from the norml view (v. 29). They would cll for the mountins to fll on them nd bring quick end, for they would be better off ded thn fcing wht cme with the end of the city (v. 30). Finlly, he sid For if they do this when the wood is green, wht will hppen when it is dry? (v. 31). This verse hs puzzled interpreters for yers. Some hve sought connection with the wood of the cross, but tht is unlikely. The sying is probbly proverbil nd subject to ppliction in different circumstnces. The most common view is tht here the green wood represented Jesus nd the dry wood represented Jeruslem. If such suffering could come upon the innocent green wood, how much worse would the disster be for wood tht is guilty nd spiritully dry, like sesoned firewood? A relted interprettion suggests tht if Jesus trgic deth could occur when Jeruslem ws reltively peceful (like green wood), wht trocities might hppen if tensions rose nd it becme like tinderbox?
