1 The Bet 1, Peom 1 Composition 1, Letter 1 Part 1 : The Bet by Anton Chekhov ** 1. Why does the banker think the death penalty is more moral and humane than life imprisonment? Because the death penalty kills quickly, but life imprisonment kills slowly. 2. Why does one of the guests think both death penalty and life imprisonment are equally immoral? They both aim to take away life. The state is not God, so it does not have a right to take life. 3. Why would the young lawyer choose life imprisonment over death? Because living anyhow is better than not living at all. 4. Why does the banker regret the bet? Because it was a waste of the man's life and the banker's money, and did not really prove anything. 5. How long does the young lawyer agree to stay in prison? He agrees to stay in prison for fifteen years. Poem 1: I had a dove by John Keats 1. Complete the sentences : 1. A dove is a kind of bird. 2. To grieve is to be very sad about a great loss. 3. Thread is thin cotton used for sewing. 2. Answer the questions : 1. Why do you think the dove's feet were tied? To stop it flying away. 2. Who tied the bird's feet? The writer of the poem. 3. Did the poet care about the bird? He loved the bird but he loved it selfishly. He did not think about the importance of freedom for a bird. Why does the prisoner refuse wine and tobacco? - He refuses wine because it excites desires that as a prisoner he cannot satisfy, and he does not like drinking alone - He refuses tobacco because it spoils the air in his room. 2. Why does the prisoner ask the banker to fire a shot in the garden? Why do you think the banker asks for two shots to be fired? - because he wants to know that his letters in six languages have no mistakes. - Perhaps the extra shot is to congratulate the prisoner. 3. What does the prisoner's reading suggest about his moods at different times? The changes in his reading habits suggest changes in his moods: -first, a need for entertainment and interest, -than, frustration and despair, -then, enthusiastically using his time to study, -and finally, a powerful hunger for deep meaning, knowledge and understanding. 1. The prisoner often wrote all night, then in the morning tore up all that he had written. 2. It was difficult to get all the books the prisoner requested because he requested so many around 600 over four years. 3. The prisoner believed he had mastered six languages because he wrote a letter in six languages, and the shots told him that nobody had found any mistakes in them. Poem 2: If by Rudyard Kipling 1. What advice does the poet give if people panic and blame you? keep your head / Remain calm and think sensibly. 2. What advice does the poet give if men doubt you? Trust yourself, but consider their doubts. 3. What advice does the poet give if things you have created are broken? Build them up again. 4. What advice does the poet give if you lose all your winnings? Start again at the beginning and don't complain. 5. What advice does the poet give if your heart and nerve are gone? Use your will power to continue. 6. What will happen if you follow all the advice the poet gives? You will achieve everything that you want and you will be the best and strongest kind of person Composition 2 " Oil " Its importance to life Oil's products Oil in the future You are Islam. " For many still are waiting / It was their farewell kiss " Why are they waiting? Why was it their farewell kiss? Their loved ones never came home because the war killed them. Composition 3 " Recycling " old methods of getting rid of waste economical benefits of recycling advantages and benefits of recycling Letter 3 You are Wisam. You are concerned with bad environmental problems in your city, that is pollution ( air and noise pollution ) Write a Letter to the editor of Al-Quads newspaper whose office is in Jerusalem, 88 Horria Street. Do the following Describe the problem. Persuade people that action is necessary to solve this problem. Make a proposal for action. While he has been in prison, the prisoner believes that he has gained great wisdom. 4. The banker reads the message and comes to despise himself. Answer the questions : 1. Who do you think is morally better in The Bet, the prisoner who rejects knowledge, or the banker who wants to hide the truth? Can you explain why? I think the prisoner is better because he acts according to what he thinks is right, whereas the banker thinks only of himself 2. What happens to the banker? He feels grateful to the prisoner but he despises himself deeply and hides the truth from others. 3. What happens to the prisoner? The prisoner despises money, people and the world, so he leaves without claiming the money and he disappears. Poem 4: Be Strong by Maltbie D. Babcock You shouldn't dream. You should fight on. You shouldn't faint. You should lift loads. You shouldn't play. You should speak out. You shouldn't fold your hand. You should stand up. 1. drift means something like be uncertain. 2. shun means to avoid or refuse. 3. acquiesce means to accept or allow something. 4. Something which is entrenched is difficult to change. Composition 4 " Technology " Technology leads to development. Technology saves time and effort. Technology achieves welfare and prosperity. Letter 4 You are Jehad. You live in Ramallah, Al-Irsal Street, building No. 4, PO Box 34. You are concerned with an environmental problem in your city that is the quality of water Write a letter to the editor of Al-Hayah Newspaper whose office in Gaza, Ramla Street. Do the following: Describe the problem. Persuade people that action is necessary. Suggest solutions.

State the argument for or against that seemed to you to be the strongest. Both are equally immoral for they both have the same object - to take away life The state is not God. It has not the right to take away life Part 2: Which, in your opinion, were (a) the worst period and (b) the happiest point of the lawyer's years of imprisonment? Explain They worst period was the first year because the lawyer suffered from loneliness and depression The happiest point was the sixth year because he studied philosophy and history and he learnt six language without mistakes. Part 3 : Contrast the banker's thoughts about the prisoner's future and the way the prisoner actually appeared on his last night of imprisonment. The banker imagined the prisoner would get married and enjoyed life but the prisoner actually looked old, weak, thin and pale. Part 4: At the end, how did (a) the prisoner, and (b) the banker feel about themselves? Explain. The prisoner felt wise and superior to everyone The banker despised himself.
