The Spiritual Works of Mercy are an excellent way to express your faith and gratitude to God for everything that is good in your life. Holy Cross School helps students to prepare for a life of faith in Christ and the grace of God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. In addition, forming one s conscience according to the teachings of the Church and will of God will also prove to be efficacious for all people of good will. Holy Cross School is an invaluable resource for helping students not only properly form the conscience, but also understanding its importance for a life well lived. The Spiritual Works of Mercy are listed as: Counseling the Doubtful Instructing the Ignorant Admonishing the Sinner Comforting the Sorrowful Forgiving Injuries Bearing Wrongs Patiently Praying for the Living and the Dead You can see how these activities are taught and encouraged, and even interwoven through the curriculum. Children who attend Holy Cross School receive the most balanced education possible. It is the duty of every man to uphold the dignity of every woman. Saint John Paul II Catechism Corner * These Q&A items are addressing questions using the Baltimore Catechism: Do you know the Apostles Creed? Say the Apostles Creed: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, Our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell; the third day He arose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, sitteth at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen. [further reading: CCC ] CCC 194: The Apostles' Creed is so called because it is rightly considered to be a faithful summary of the apostles' faith. It is the ancient baptismal symbol of the Church of Rome. Its great authority arises from this fact: it is "the Creed of the Roman Church, the See of Peter the first of the apostles, to which he brought the common faith".

5 We now have registration forms for the school year. If you would like to enroll your child in the CCD program for religious education, please get a registration form from the church s vestibule, or from the parish office and turn it in when completed. We have a tentative start date of August 24 th. Teachers needed We could still use one or two more people interested in working with the grade school aged youth of our parish through our CCD program. Several people have graciously stepped up to replace those teachers who were unable to commit to teaching in the school year. If one or two more (or more) individuals would be able to help as classroom aides or substitutes, we would enthusiastically welcome them aboard. Please call the parish office at if you are interested or would like more information. Ask for Brian. Confirmation Date Announced! We are changing things up just a bit this year and will hold our bestowal of the Sacrament of Confirmation on Sunday, October 23 rd at 4 p.m. We hope this will allow more family and friends to more easily attend this beautiful sacrament. Please spread the word! WYD pilgrims to receive a social doctrine app from the Pope Pope Francis at the General Audience in St. Peter's Square, June 15, Credit: L'Osservatore Romano. By Elise Harris Vatican City, Jul 9, 2016 / 05:52 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- Pope Francis has established a tech-savvy track record as Pope, and now in addition to breaking records on Instagram and becoming the first Pope to use Google Hangouts, he will give World Youth Day pilgrims a new electronic app. From the creators of 2011 s YouCat youth catechism, a new version of the book called the DoCat has been developed, which intends to present the Church's social teaching in a creative style more attractive and comprehensible to youth. The new book will be launched during World Youth Day in Krakow and given to young pilgrims by Pope Francis in the form of an app. The YouCat was first distributed at World Youth Day in Madrid in 2011 as a way to help extend the experience and knowledge of the faith into young pilgrims homes. Why a new version of a book on social doctrine? Christian Lermer, CEO of the YouCat Foundation, told CNA in an interview that they wanted to create something that would make the teaching of the Church readable and attractive, without changing the content. Bernhard Meuser, founder of the YouCat Foundation, said that following the YouCat s publication they received several s from youth in the United States saying, now we know what our faith is. What do we do? Please, do a Do-Cat! Pope Francis himself wrote the preface for the book, which will be launched in Krakow July 23, three days before the July youth encounter. According to Meuser, while Pope Francis preface for the YouCat provided a strong message about work, his preface for the DoCat focuses on the Roman Pontiff s dream of a new generation. With many youth too lax when it comes to living the Church s social doctrine, Francis dreamed of young people who know everything about justice and peace, the Gospel and the love of God, and mercy. Meuser said his hope for the DoCat is that it will be a learning moment in social doctrine.

6 HOLY CROSS RELIGIOUS EDUCATION 2016 JULY 17, 2016 [Mary] has chosen the better part With whom do you most closely relate in today s gospel? Are you more of a Martha? Or does Mary s attitude more closely reflect your own? This is a challenging passage for so many. On its face, it seems to be saying that Martha s work is in vain. Only by sitting at the feet of Jesus are we fed spiritually. I referred to Mary s attitude, and indeed, that is what she expresses; an attitude of love, devotion and adoration. Does this mean Martha does not also love the Lord? No. Of course Martha loves the Lord as well. We know this because this is not the only passage where these two sisters are mentioned. They are also the sisters of Jesus very close friend, Lazarus. Martha was the sister who came to greet Jesus when he heard that Lazarus had died and traveled to Bethany to raise him up. Remember, it was pointed out a couple of weeks ago that Jesus journey to Jerusalem in Luke s Gospel will take us to the end of Ordinary Time in this Liturgical Year. And so this leg of the journey, which started after the seventy two disciples returned from their inaugural mission trip. Bethany is only a couple of miles from Jerusalem, so the idea that this journey which Jesus resolutely determined to make taking up so much of the Gospel indicates the importance of this trip. I give you all of this as simply additional background to consider as you reflect on this passage. And so now let s step back into today s Gospel and look more closely at the message. Jesus is in the home of Lazarus, Martha and Mary, and is surrounded by those disciples who were also traveling with him to Jerusalem. He is teaching about the kingdom of God and its immanent revelation to mankind. And as he is speaking, Mary sits attentively at his feet listening to a deep, provocative and profound message about love. Of course she s fallen in love with this man, haven t we all? After all, everyone knows to look out for the wolf in sheep s clothing, but have we also forgotten about the Lamb in the guise of a man of suffering (see Isaiah 53:3). Mary is enraptured by the words of this man. THE SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME In the meantime, Martha concerns herself with the comforts of her guests, making sure everyone is being served and her attention is not focused on the one who should be considered the guest of honor. She can t stop thinking about how she has to do everything herself, with no help whatsoever from sister Mary! Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her. As Martha complains to Jesus, asking him to rebuke her sister so that she would be of more help at least that is her expectation when Jesus turns the rebuke gently back to Martha. Jesus explains that she is being a worrywart and that she needs to simply slow down and listen to the message of love God has for her too. And so let s return to the question from the beginning of this meditation. With which sister do you more closely identify? Are the things of the world, food, clothing, income, appearances, trivialities are the things of the world what you find yourself concerned with? I know the vast majority of us are much more closely identified with Martha than we are to Mary. You see, Mary is more like Jesus himself, gone out of the world in conversation with his heavenly Father, only to come back refreshed and revitalized, ready to continue his mission of spreading the Good News across all Judea. He gives example to his disciples so that they too will know how to spread the Gospel. The calling that the Father had for the Son is the same calling the Son passed on to his disciples. And that is the same calling his disciples have handed down through the ages to us today. How are we choosing to answer that call? Do we spend time regularly and often in conversation and contemplation of our Lord? Does that time in prayer then lend itself to a life of loving God and neighbor as we have been shown by Jesus himself? After ashes are spread in the shape of a cross on our foreheads at the start of Lent, we hear the minister say Repent and believe in the Gospel or Remember man that you are dust and to dust you shall return. Repent and believe. That is our mission. And if we truly believe we will be able to begin to see others through the same eyes of love as was the custom of Jesus our Savior. And that is the better part. Like us on at by Brian Corrigan

7 HOLY CROSS CHURCH SUNDAY, JULY 17, 2016 MENDOTA, ILLINOIS Meditation: Mercy s Gaze: Quotes from the Diary of St. Faustina Write this for the benefit of distressed souls; when a soul sees and realizes the gravity of its sins, when the whole abyss of the misery into which it immersed itself is displayed before its eyes, let it not despair, but with trust let it throw itself into the arms of My mercy, as a child into the arms of its beloved mother. These souls have a right of priority to My compassionate Heart, they have first access to My mercy. Tell them that no soul that has called upon My mercy has been disappointed or brought to shame. I delight particularly in a soul which has placed its trust in My goodness (Diary, 1541). My Prayer Response: Jesus, I pray for distressed souls plunge them into the ocean of Your mercy. Help them to trust in Your goodness! May trusting souls delight You. St. Mary's Altar Society of Holy Cross Catholic Church extends our sincere thank you to the following group of faithful church cleaners. Please get in touch with Mary Ann Brunner if you have time to contribute to this ministry. Thank you. Officers: Kay Brunoehler, Betty Meznarich, and Jean Simkins TRASH BAGS May Jesus be always with you and may He be pleased to make all redeemed souls worthy to be received one day into the kingdom of glory.
