Today in Haiti, locations of Jolitru Clinic in Cap Haitian and Grace Children s Hospital in Port-au-Prince, there are massive demonstrations and fear among the people. I recently received a Facebook message from a pastor friend who is not able to get to his apartment and many people cannot get out of their homes to shop for food or drink. Gangs have taken to wearing police uniforms and rounding up people and the government has not addressed this problem. (When one part of the Body of Christ suffers, we all suffer). In 2016 Kalaci Khaled spoke of the connection Fanny Gamble had in 1914 by giving money to the Hungarian Methodists to help purchase a building for the beginning of the Methodist movement in the middle of World War 1. Today our brothers and sisters in Budapest are purchasing a building across from apartments to do ministry and we are supporting them with a gift of $3600, just 1% of the cost but a gift of love. (When you know of a brother in need and you can help, do not withhold it). The Champions, who are from Cincinnati, live and minister at the Methodist Seminary in Moscow, Russia. They teach English, ballet and have established a youth group as well. In their ministry of slow evangelism and friendship, they help youth learn of Jesus Christ and God s love. Along with families connected to these young people. In Thailand, we support a couple working to get young girls out of the sex trade. And while we can t tell you where they are, they were here not long ago sharing with us about their ministry and the success in establishing another home for these girls. (Let the little children come to Me). In Islamabad, Pakistan we have sent two shipments of Bibles in the native language to hungry people who desire the Word of God over against the Koran and Islam. Recently there were bombings in churches and people injured for the faith. (Pray for peace that they may continue their witness). In Cuba, Pastor Guillermo Mighty and his church in Havana are taking care of hundreds after a violent tornado swept through Havana. We recently sent money to help them through our connections with Stillwater UMC and are planning a trip there this year. You might want to come along. So what about our community? My Neighbor s Place, Upward basketball, United Methodist Women mission outreaches, Wesmates Fund that supplies over 20 organizations each year with support, our apportionments help missionaries here and abroad as well work in Ohio. Isn t it good to be in a mission church! Rev. Dr. Lee Strawhun is the senior pastor at Westwood United Methodist Church lee@westwoodunitedmethodist.org

I am asked that question several times a day about the status of the gym roof. Yes, it is still leaking and yes, we are at the top of the list for the work to start, weather permitting. Unlike a residential roof there is no sheeting or underlayment for the finished roof to lay on. When the old roof is removed the area is open to the sky. This condition requires that the weather must be clear of precipitation for 3-4 consecutive days. This is a huge undertaking and is a major investment in the future of our church as well as a substantial financial investment. 3 14 Westwood UMC Preschool Classroom Spotlight: BUMBLEBEES Our Bumblebee class is one of our 2 older preschool classrooms where students can graduate to kindergarten. Bumblebee students are 4 5 years old and are at Westwood UMC Preschool 4 days a week (Monday Thursday), with the option to come to our Friday Enrichment class. This Friday class is open to all Bumblebees and Frogs, which gives our students a chance to look more into science (hands on experiments), math (games and art projects) and writing. Bumblebee Classroom Goals: Continue to work on letter and number recognition Learn more about letter sounds Regulate own emotions and behaviors Growing positive social skills Participate constructively with classmates and teachers Increase confidence and independence Messages of Hope at Westwood United Methodist Church 8:30 AM Communion Service, Chapel 9:30 AM Traditional Service, Sanctuary 10:00 AM New Covenant, Chapel 11:00 AM The Modern Service, Thomas Moore was highly successful in his writing and was a huge part in England emancipating Ireland because they saw through the writings of Moore the spirit of the Irish people whom they found to be distasteful previously. Come, Ye Disconsolate has been favorably revised by American hymnist Thomas Hastings. He made it more singable and gave the song a much better lyrical flow. He also gave the text a better logical progression. Joy of the desolate, light of the straying, Hope of the penitent, fadeless and pure! Here speaks the Comforter, tenderly saying, Earth has no sorrow that heav n cannot cure. What students learn in the Art Area: Discover line, color, shape and texture by seeing and feeling objects Express individual thoughts and feelings Engage in conversation by sharing ideas with others Develop problem solving skills, organizational skills, and manipulative skills Respond to storytelling by drawing or painting Experiment with materials to understand cause & effect Throughout the past 7 years, Miss Tracey and Miss Amy have created a nurturing classroom environment that enables their students to grow and thrive as they head towards kindergarten. They make a wonderful team! One reason I love this piece is because of its simplicity and beauty of text. Come, Ye Disconsolate was written by Irish Roman Catholic Thomas Moore. Like many young people today, Thomas had trouble early on figuring out his direction in life. He was sent to Trinity College in Dublin but was not allowed to graduate because of his Roman Catholic affiliation. He later trained as a lawyer but could not bring himself to begin a legal career. Still later he was given an admiralty in Bermuda but he found this to be monotonous and left then decided to devote him life to writing literature. Come, ye disconsolate, where er ye languish, Come to the mercy seat, fervently kneel. Here bring your wounded hearts, here tell your anguish; Earth has no sorrow that heav n cannot heal. Art is an important part of a Creative Curriculum classroom. Every day our students will find a variety of art materials available in the Bumblebee free art area. Free Art gives our Bees a chance to express original ideas and feelings, build on their fine motor skills, learn more about colors and textures, practice writing, nuture their creativity and take pride in their accomplishments by exploring and using art materials. When children are engaged in art activities, we say things that will encourage children to be creative and confident such as, Tell me about your picture instead of, Is that a house you made? This is Miss Amy s 7th year at Westwood UMC Preschool as the Bumblebee Assistant Teacher. Along with Miss Tracey, she participated in the Promoting Resilient Children Coaching program and ongoing professional development. One of my favorite hymns is a hymn that is surprisingly largely unknown to a large number of people. I am referring to Come, Ye Disconsolate UMH 510. I love this piece for a number of reasons. Come, Ye Disconsolate says to all who feel inconsolable, there is comfort, consolation, and a Comforter for your troubles. What man or woman on this planet does not have troubles at some point in their life? This song points people in the right direction in seeking refuge from their troubles. I hope that you find consolation in this song that we will sing together one day soon. God bless you. How do they work towards achieving these goals? Miss Tracey and Miss Amy use Creative Curriculum to prepare their weekly lesson plans and activities. Creative Curriculum is built on theories of development in young children, that all children learn through active exploration of their environment, which plays a critical role in learning. More about our Bumblebee Teachers: Miss Tracey has been a part of Westwood UMC Preschool for the past 19 years. In past years, she has worked in the Star classroom, but for the past 7 years Miss Tracey has been the Lead Teacher in the Bumblebee classroom. Over the years, Miss Tracey completed her Child Development Associate Certification (CDA), Promoting Resilient Children Coaching program, and Greeting dear brothers and sisters of Westwood United Methodist Church! Here see the bread of life, see waters flowing Forth from the throne of God, pure from above. Come to the feast of love; come, ever knowing Earth has no sorrow but heav n can remove. He handed out gifts. to train all Christians in skilled servant work, working within Christ s body, the church, till we are all moving rhythmically and easily with each other, efficient and graceful in response to God s Son, fully mature adults, fully developed within and without, fully alive like Christ. 4 4 What exactly is the Daily Office? The easy answer is a bunch of scripture to read everyday set out in a two year cycle known as Year 1 and Year 2. However there is a great history and tradition behind the Daily Office. It was created for a purpose to bring us closer to God and into a greater relationship with Scripture. I found some great information about the Daily Office and I want to share it with you. It was created to help us obey the greatest commandment to love God (with everything we are). prayers_and_thanksgivings.php The History of the Daily Office: From ancient times worship has been not just a weekly but a daily affair. For devout Jews, daily prayer rested upon the divine command: "Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up." -Deut. 6:4-7 This was taken to mean that the Shema was to be said twice daily upon waking and upon going to sleep. There s also evidence that the Temple sacrifices took place twice a day: once in the morning and once in the evening. Those unable to attend the Temple liturgies began to pray at the same hours. As monastic communities developed, they formed their entire lives upon the rhythm of daily prayer. They consisted of prayers, a psalm, appointed Bible readings, canticles, and the Lord s Prayer. The Purpose of the Daily Office: The sanctification of time a reminder that all time is sacred since all time belongs to God and the sanctification of the individual a way to draw a person closer to God. The idea of some set form of Office is based on a realistic assessment of human beings and of our prayer potential. We do not always pray with spontaneity and ease, nor should our prayer depend on the way we feel. Prayer which is so based on feelings is unstable and lacks depth. The Office is a form of prayer which is independent of our feelings, though, of course it is often accompanied by, and arouses, deep feelings and emotion. Kenneth Leech, True Prayer, p So what about that Prayer thing called a Collect? What is a collect? A collect is simply a prayer meant to gather the intentions of the people and the focus of worship into a succinct prayer. All of the collects more or less fit a pattern that was developed and some would say perfected by Archbishop Cranmer in the first Book of Common Prayer (1549). The form of collects is actually quite simple. 1. There is an address to God and to his character or actions in the world on our behalf. 2. There is a request. 3. There is an invocation and doxology. 4. And there is The Amen. An example: The Collect- Morning (1) Lord God, almighty and everlasting Father, you have brought us in safety to this new day: (2) Preserve us with your mighty power, that we may not fall into sin, nor be overcome by adversity; and in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose; (3) through Jesus Christ our Lord. (4) Amen. Bottom Line: Spending daily time with God helps us live out one Shema love God with all we are. 13

5 12 By Beth Strawhun & Beth Anne Crego Father, your call on Westwood is to be Your hands and feet, voice and heart for the people who seek You. Draw 100 into Westwood through our service in your name. Amen We have been praying this prayer as a congregation since April 2018 so what has God done in drawing people into Westwood? Through the collaboration of the Welcome team and Prayer team coordinators (the two of us!), we put together a list of those whom God has brought. It was awesome to look over the list of new members and new regular attendees and visualize a sea of faces spanning the ages (from babies to seniors) as well as singles or married couples without children and also with children. And what or who has God used to draw them here? If asked that question, the answers would vary from close proximity to the church; our website; our church s reputation in the community; attending a church sponsored outreach event and personal invitation just to name a few. As far as numbers go, we counted 45!! Praise God! Isn t it exciting to see God answer our prayers? This definitely can encourage us to pray even more! What about the next 55? We still don t know who He will bring next but it s up to God! And also, how can we be God s hands and feet, voice and heart for the people who are seeking Him? How can we be more open and available to be used by God to bring others into our church family? And once they come through our doors, let s pray we can be the ones that show them radical hospitality that will draw them back. May we be answers to our church-wide prayer as well! Some of us may be wondering it s taking too long it s almost been a year! And others may think wow this is a lot for a short period of time! Regardless, the most important thing to remember is that we don t know how long it will take--it s on God s timetable. Our job is to be persistent in prayer and not give up. 5 Sacrificial Sharing During the Season of Lent, one spiritual discipline we will be practicing is generosity. We will be challenged to give 40 items away to share with our neighbors. Early church communities fasted in order to have enough to share with everyone in their neighborhood. Instead of simply decluttering (which is not bad in itself), let s give extravagantly, as an act of worship, knowing that when we share with the poor, we share with Christ himself (Matthew 25). Here is an article, by Kristen Welch I found challenging on giving our best. (Also if you have clothes that are torn or stained, St. Vincent Thrift Shop has a way to recycle them for industrial use and is a better option than My Neighbor s Place). By Sarah Beach Community Outreach Team Leader Why do we give others-often those in service to the poor or the poor themselvessomething we wouldn t keep or give ourselves? Somehow collecting clothes for immigrants has become the perfect opportunity to get rid of stuff we don t want and gathering baby items for new moms is the perfect excuse to toss out stained and worn clothing we wouldn t dare use again. I ve packed suitcases with beautiful donations, but mostly I ve pilfered through piles of junk donated in the name of Jesus. It s time to stop giving poor quality to the poor. There s nothing wrong with used or second-hand. It s often my first and favorite choice. Many organizations and ministries depend on used gifts. But if we give used, it should be our best. I m not saying when we clean out older clothes or toys or things we don t use any longer and donate them that this is wrong. I am saying if we give it away, it should be something we would use ourselves. The poor may not have wealth, but they have dignity. I ve met people without electricity or running water who swept their dirt floors daily, pressed their clothes neatly, walked miles to work on muddy roads, dodging sewage and never had a speck of dirt on them. They value their own worth, we should too... It s time to think about not only what we give and how we give it, but also why we give it. Just because it makes us feel better (and cleans out our garage at the same time), doesn t mean it s the best for those in need. Perhaps we should look a little deeper into our hearts and wallets when we can say, I don t have money to give to the poor, but I have a lot of stuff. Maybe we need to buy less stuff, so we have more to give? We re not giving what we re called to give, unless that giving affects how we live affects what we put on our plate and where we make our home and hang our hat and what kind of threads we ve got to have on our back. Surplus Giving is the leftover you can afford to give; Sacrificial Giving is the love gift that changes how you live because the love of Christ has changed you. God doesn t want your leftovers. God wants your love overtures, your first-overs, because He is your first love. -Ann Voskamp There have been times over the years, I ve gasped and grinned at the beautiful items I ve sorted and packed for the impoverished. When we give our best, we are living our best. We are saying with our donation, you are valuable. We are whispering with our gift, you are worthy of the best. We have the opportunity to speak self worth when we give generously. It s a promise for them. It s a promise for us. Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his deed. - Proverbs 19:17 The next time we have the opportunity to share what we have with someone who is in need. let s give from the pile we want to keep, not from the one we want to throw out. The next free WESTWOOD COMMUNITY DINNER will be 6:00 pm, THURSDAY, MARCH 14 at MNP. Contact Sarah Beach, sarah@westwoodunitedmethodist.org or the WUMC office to see how you can help with this fantastic mission. This dinner is open to all, so plan on stopping by for a great meal and wonderful conversation.

6 6 11 HISTORY OF UNITED METHODIST WOMEN The beginning of UMW can be traced back to an 1869 meeting of eight women on a stormy night in Boston. These women met to specifically learn about women s health and education needs in India from missionary wives on itineration in Boston. These eight women called another meeting, wrote a constitution, and organized the Methodist Women s Foreign Missionary Society. Within the year they sent missionary Isabella Thoburn and Dr. Clara Swain to India to care for women. Please welcome Leslie Rich, our Children's Ministry Team Leader. Leslie, her husband Bill and their two children, Liam (10) and Theodore, aka Theo (8) live in Westwood. Leslie is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati and deeply invested in Westwood. Leslie was a part of the team that brought Young Life to Oak Hills High School in the late 1990's and was active in children's ministry at Grace Lutheran Church and Gloria Dei Lutheran Church leading both Sunday School and VBS. Before joining the team at Westwood United Methodist Church, Leslie spent 16 years on the professional staff of Girl Scouts of Western Ohio. During her time at Girl Scouts, Leslie uncovered leadership in public housing complexes throughout Cincinnati, Hamilton and Middletown, created outreach programs serving girls with incarcerated parents and directed summer day camp programs in partnership with the Cincinnati Police Department and the Cincinnati Fire Department. In her most recent role with Girl Scouts she led the volunteer support and retention team in Cincinnati, Dayton, Lima and Toledo. Leslie also co-founded and currently serves as the Executive Director of Westwood Works. She serves on the boards of My Neighbor's Place and Gamble Nippert YMCA and enjoys the opportunity to be a room parent for both of her boys' classrooms at Dater Montessori. In her free time she enjoys singing, hiking, skateboarding, reading and gardening. She looks forward to supporting the children's ministry team as they demonstrate God's love to children and their families at Westwood United Methodist Church. In the period of , women in the Methodist and Evangelical United Brethren traditions organized home missionary organizations which worked to change situations for women and children within the United States. Highlights of some of the activities of note in UMW history: 1939 Woman s Society of Christian Service Wesleyan Service Guild, The Methodist Church 1952 The first Charter for Racial policies adopted 1954 Support for the historic Supreme Court decision (Brown vs. Board of Education) 1955 Policy statement on school desegregation adopted by The Woman s Division of the Evangelical United Brethren Church 1956 The General Conference of the Methodist Church approved full clergy rights for women Passed resolution in opposition to the Vietnam War 1972 Organized around the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment 1984, 1988 Sent resolutions to General Conference in opposition to apartheid in South Africa 1990 Delivered 10,000 postcards signed by Assembly participants requesting President Bush to sign the child care bill 2018 United Methodist Women members delivered almost 2,000 letters and met with Chevron staff pressing them to sign on to reducing methane gas and leaks through to gas supply chain United Methodist Women celebrates 150 years with 800,000 members.

7 P A G E 1 0 P A G E 7 Beloved in Christ Jesus, As I write this, the General Conference is within a half-hour of adjournment. I want to offer a few thoughts as we move forward. Your prayers have sustained the West Ohio delegates, all of the delegates, the bishops, me and Cynthia. Thank you. I encourage you to continue to be earnest in prayer for The United Methodist Church, the mission and your local church. Over the next 48 hours I will be sorting out and analyzing what the General Conference actually adopted along with the decisions of the General Conference and the effect of those actions on our common life. I will not be doing this in isolation, but with other bishops and with our delegates and other leaders in our conference. I hope you will be at one of many locations for the simulcast on Saturday morning March 2. This will give me a chance to share a first summary of where we are and answer a few questions. The cabinet will be meeting with me 3 of the next 7 days to continue the process of analysis and communication. Your District Superintendents will be moving among you in the month of March. I will be determining in the next several weeks the places I need to be and the conversations I need to host with multiple audiences.. This has been a robust General Conference. The attention to prayer and worship has been inspiring and helpful. There have been bright moments and there have been dim moments. There have been words and speeches that have soared with poetic Spirit inspired oratory. There have been words and speeches that have done harm to people, especially our LGBTQ sisters and brothers. I lament this and our lack of capacity to hold the whole together and keep the unity of the spirit in the bond of peace. That said I am more sold out to Jesus and the Good News he embodied. I am more committed to the mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world and doing everything in my power in WOC to start new churches to do this work and encouraging all churches that are doing this work now. I am resolute that I/we have been called to be the church together. The Bible, many resources within the Christian tradition, and our book of polity all call us to unity for the sake of mission. You can expect that I will continue to both curate and provoke, to be a pastor, prophet, and priest among you. I have confidence in our future together because I am sure God is not through with The United Methodist Church. Our greatest influence on the future of the UMC will spring primarily from how we embody the mission and ministry in West Ohio. Because I move forward in hope does not mean that I move into the future unclear that there is a challenging road ahead of us locally and globally. We have work to do, a charge to keep and a God to glorify. We have work to do and our work is never uncontested and that is precisely why we place our hope and trust God. Now may the God of Hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing so that you may overflow with Hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13 FRIDAY, MARCH CHRIS & LAURIE McBRIDE S HOME We are celebrating our youth students who courageously ripped out the stinky carpet in the youth room. Wow!
