Patrick Price Office: revpprice@ Director of Religious Education Kathy Smith dre@ Director of Music Christopher Wolff cuucmusic@att.net Church Secretary Connie Meints Office: cuuc-office@ Church Bookkeeper Brandy Nabors Special Addresses Board of Trustees board@ Strategic Planning Committee planning@ Years ago, a church near my home had a sign which said, "Hope is the reason for the season." Over the years, in the lead up to Christmas and the holiday season my attitude has shifted from amusement, to "Bah! Humbug!" to appreciation. At first it struck me as sentimentally quaint. Then as I yearly encounter the difficulties that seem to multiply or just be more stark in affecting the lives of church folks, family and friends, Death, difficulty and darkness also come for the holidays. With our ongoing economic uncertainties and global concerns there is plenty of darkness to go around. As one Occupy Wall Street protester commented, we feel that the light at the end of the tunnel has been turned off. Darkness and struggle and death are important parts of our human reality. They have much to teach us and they cannot be denied or avoided for very long, but, we all have limits as to how much we can deal with. Sometimes I find myself muttering resentfully, "Great! Another growth opportunity. Just what I needed." Unfortunately we cannot exchange these "gifts" from the Universe for a better size or color. So are we left with our pain, and faith, and hope. For Unitarian Universalists our hope is not naive wish fulfillment, but an honest optimism based on a deep faith that we are inherently unique and worthy beings, that we are not alone and that the universe ultimately has meaning. Faith is not based on proof, but on those things we know to be true in the absence of proof. Therefore, I cannot give you proof for having hope, only that we do, and must have it. We need light most when we are in the dark, and faith is the certainty that we have a candle and matches and, if we can only lay our hands on them, we have hope of not being lost in the dark. However it is we who individually understand and symbolize our sources of hope. Whether it is the Christ child, or God's grace though the Hanukah miracle, or the death and return of the Solar year, we all experience our hope through the particular and concrete: a card, a gift, an embrace, a song, a candle in the window. This is the reason for the importance for both human connection and traditions. This is why I am continually thankful for the kindness and support I have gotten and continue to receive in my life, and for that which I see shared generously in our congregations and in our larger community. So this season is not about parties or mindless frivolity and good times, and we should not feel additionally burdened by guilt because we are not "in the holiday spirit." This season is, in fact, a reminder that we have life in the midst of death, and light in the midst of darkness. It is about the possibility of joy in the midst of sorrow and pain. It is a reminder to us as Unitarian Universalists, that all people, including ourselves, are inherently worthy expressions of the Holy and not alone. And in turn we are obligated to share this message of hope in many real ways with others. As great as our own desire is to withdraw and protect our tiny spark, we are, to each other, the bearers of this light and hope. We are the Magi, we are the flask of oil, we are the ones who sing the light back into being for each other. Together we blow bright the embers (continued on page 4)

3 December 2011 Page 3 The President s Corner Tom Reid What Is Our Mission? (And Why Should We Care, Anyway?) You may remember in last month s column, I was talking about not being alone in the UU World, that we are part of a larger set of networks including the North Texas Association of UU Societies (NTAUUS) and the Southwest UU Conference (SWUUC). Last weekend the Community Church Board of Trustees, Minister and DRE attended a SWUUC conference in Glen Rose, TX. We chose to attend the same workshop track entitled, Examining Your Mission Field: Demographic and Cultural Study Tools. So what does that mean? Here s a bit about what it was and what it wasn t. First, I discovered that there are lots of mission statements out there among UU Churches! As a leader in our workshop stated they often begin with something like We are a welcoming and diverse group of loving people dedicated to make the world a better place.yada yada. Here s ours Community Unitarian Universalist Church is a congregation of welcoming, diverse, caring, and committed people. We provide an atmosphere and framework for examining spiritual questions individually and communally; serve by enriching the spirit through words, music, and fellowship; and educate all ages by promoting ethics, a sense of morality and the pursuit of personal and shared truths. We work together to make our world a more compassionate, just, and respectful place. Not bad, but thank goodness this workshop was not about rewriting Mission Statements. We examined whether our church is serving who we want to serve. Are we being who we want to be? Further, are the ways we re doing the service the most effective use of our resources? Sometimes I wonder if we know who we are -- do we understand the basic demographics about the people in our congregation and the surrounding neighborhood? Do we know how to reach people who are most likely to become members? How can we provide the services needed by our neighbors? Here comes the good part the new 2010 census data is available and has already been crunched for church use, at least in a preliminary way. When the BOT went to this most recent workshop, partly because we were the largest group in attendance, the illustrations chosen were from zip codes around our church! How about that for a fortuitous event? Well, we need to refine our investigation and do some digesting of the available data ourselves. Who better, I ask, than the many data analysts in our own midst? Elected Officers President Tom Reid (13) president@ Past President Sarah Reiling (12) Vice President Programs Cyn Blanco (12) Treasurer Janice Hildenbrand (13) Secretary Gail Battista (12) Facilities Dick Hildenbrand (13) Communications Ian Rule (12) Personnel Sandy Farlow (12) entire Board board@ Trustees meetings are held the third Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in Founders Hall. Members, friends and visitors are always welcome. Therefore I m asking for a couple of volunteers to participate with our minister and a few Board Members to do some preliminary data analysis about our church neighborhood and a few of the census tracts where congregants live and where we are delivering community service. me at president@communitychurch.org or call me up. (Continued on page 4)

In fact, I want us to look at the issue of Church Mission in a whole new way. Our existing Mission Statement is just wonderful and it took a lot of time to craft and refine. But there may be a new way to look at what we are doing and reconsider if it is what we want to do. For example, how much of our resources should we devote to our existing members, to prospective members and how much to community service? Are the services we are delivering both inside and outside the church effective, efficient, and the ones we say we want to deliver? Not enough worship? More adult and children s RE programs? Different community service projects? These are the questions! Listening to representatives from other congregations and from regional leadership is always so stimulating as it leads me to realize how well we are doing in our community but also how much more creative we could be in the process of serving people more efficiently. The Board is having a great time doing this work and we want you to catch some of the energy. By the time you read this you will already have heard more about it at the Fall Congregational Meeting and from the buzz in the hallways. So what s next after some data analysis? No long arduous planning process is needed because we already know what our values are; review the Seven Principles if you ve forgotten! The refocused issues are: Who are we serving? Whom do we want to serve? Are we doing things right and doing the right things? So in closing, here s a twist on an old favorite children s poem: Here is the church, There is no steeple, There are no doors. The Church is the people. See you in Church! TR (Continued from page 2) Patrick s Holiday Ponderings of our souls, and cup the flames of each other's hearts against the winds of despair. We are the ones who spark the light at the end of another s tunnel. Together on this road of struggle and hope let us kindle and carry our festival lights through the shadows of the valley of death, remembering that the reason for the season is indeed hope. Bright blessings be upon you and all people of good will, through this season and the coming New Year. Peace, Patrick.

I hope that your Thanksgiving was wonderful and you are looking forward to the winter holidays. I often hear from busy parents that December would be wonderful, except for all the things that demand their attention, time and money. But the busy-ness that *is* December for so many families is a yearly reminder. Do your rituals and traditions reflect your deepest values? Do you use weekends in December to run from store to store, place to place? Or do you have a plan to build memories and values in your children that will sustain them emotionally and spiritually throughout their lives? Does the heart of the holidays center on what really matters to you? I hope so. My wish for all of you is for a rich, loving, meaningful, and blessedly peaceful holiday season. My hope is that the December programs at Community UU Church add to the richness, meaning and depth of the season. May it be so, amen, and blessed be. In faith, Kathy This Year Our Sanctuary Tree will feature the highlights of 2011 as reflected in our lives. NEW this year Once the tree is up, the RE Board invites church families to add one beautiful, special ornament to our tree that symbolizes something special about this year in your family s life birth, graduation, travel, hobby or passion. Families can be any size or shape. All families are welcome. You need not have young children to be counted as a family and yes, those of us who live by ourselves are families in our own right. Tags will be available to identify your ornament so that you can reclaim it in January. Time will be provided during each worship service in December to add your ornament to our tree. We hope that this will bring additional joy and meaning to our tree this season. (continued on page 7)

7 December 2011 Page 7 REactions! (continued from page 6) Holiday Pageant Worship Service This year s pageant and worship service will be centered around the Christmas Nativity story we will have Mary and Joseph, wise men and innkeepers, shepherds and angels and animals and stars, woven through the elements of our weekly Unitarian Universalist worship service. Most parts are just a few lines long and there are also many non-speaking parts available. Please let me know if your child is interested in participating. Parts will be assigned the first week of December and our first rehearsal will be Sunday, December 4, after the worship service. There will be two opportunities to rehearse during the week before the pageant (Wednesday evening and Saturday morning) speaking parts should plan to be at one or both. There will be a final dress rehearsal on Sunday, December 11, at 9 a.m. For many children (and families), a part in the annual church holiday pageant is one of the rituals that adds depth and meaning to the holiday, while providing many wonderful memories over the years. I hope that your children will participate and whether they participate or not, I hope that your family will enjoy this multi-generational holiday service. Vespers (family-friendly) and RE Props Night Wednesday, December 7, will be a night with several activities for families: a family-friendly vespers service of music and reflection, a rehearsal for the pageant, and an RE Props night devoted to finishing costumes and props for the pageant.
