Words of Centering So Powerful is the light of unity that it can illuminate the whole earth ~ Baha u llah Introit Grasslands Chant (from The Lion King) [Ines Brookens and Chantal Hayes, dancers] Kwanzaa Welcome (Don t forget to check in on Facebook and/or on Wifi password is ) *Call to Worship We gather on this Christmas Sunday to celebrate new birth. In the birth of Christ there is new hope, peace, love and joy for the world. We gather this Kwanzaa Sunday to celebrate new birth. The principles of Kwanzaa help us to live authentically embracing all of who we ve been, all of who we are and all we hope to become. We gather this day to praise a God of love; one who invites us, with all our diversity, into community. We are God s people. We bring diversity. We seek unity. In unity, let us worship God; for together we can find true harmony. We reach out to each other recognizing the sacred worth of all people and celebrating the gift of our unique identities. We rejoice that in Christ we are one. Harambee! Harambee! Harambee! Song of Welcome Fanga Alafia [Baba Son Drum] * Please rise, in body or in spirit. Bold type within liturgy indicates congregational response. 2

Kwanzaa Principles and Candles The principles of Kwanzaa help us to learn and grow. On the first day the black candle is lit to represent unity living peacefully together as family and community. A red candle is lit on the second day. It stands for self-determination deciding on a course of action and making goals. Collective work and responsibility is the principle of the third day, when a green candle is lit. On the fourth day another red candle is used to symbolize cooperative economics daily savings and owning and operating businesses. Purpose is the principle of the fifth day when a second green candle is lit. The sixth day celebrates creativity making or doing something in a unique way. The remaining red candle is lit on this day. On the last day of Kwanzaa the green candle is lit to represent faith believing in the divine, in oneself and in others. The Kwanzaa feast and celebration commences on the seventh day. It is a time of sharing and rejoicing. Today, here at Broadway, in reverence and care we celebrate all seven principles. Lighting of the Candles As we celebrate the festival of Kwanzaa, we light the seven candles and recall the seven principles. (There will be a short pause after the lighting of each candle.) UMOJA We light the candle of Umoja to symbolize the unity of all people. May God be with us in unity and peace. KUJICHAGULIA UJIMA We light the candle of Kujichgulia to symbolize our right to determine our community s destiny and future. May God be with us in the struggle for self-determination. We light the candle of Ujima to show the need of our community to work together and to be responsible for one another. May God be with us in the struggle of collective work and communal responsibility. UJAMAA We light the candle of Ujamaa to show the need for our community to improve its economic situation by cooperating with one another. May God be with us as we develop a community based on cooperative economic development. 3

NIA We light the candle of Nia to show our community s resolve; its purpose to make our people stronger. May God be with us as we go forward with one purpose, to continue the struggle to be truly free. KUUMBA IMANI We light the candle of Kuumba to symbolize the creative spirit of all our peoples. May God be the light of our lives. We light the candle of Imani to show our faith in God and our faith in ourselves. May God be with us and strengthen us so that we may continue the struggle of liberation. Let us rejoice in the richness of our cultures and traditions before our Creator! Let us all pull together! Harambee! Congregational Song They ll Know We Are Christians by Our Love... FS 2223 Scripture Reading Colossians 3:12-17 Because you are God s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with heartfelt compassion, with kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with one another; forgive whatever grievances you have against one another forgive in the same way God has forgiven you. Above all else, put on love, which binds the rest together and makes them perfect. Let Christ s peace reign in your hearts since, as members of one body, you have been called to that peace. Dedicate yourselves to thankfulness. Let the Word of Christ, rich as it is, dwell in you. Instruct and admonish one another wisely. Sing gratefully to God from your hearts in psalms, hymns and songs of the Spirit. And whatever you do, whether in speech or in action, do it in the name of Jesus our Savior, giving thanks to God through Christ. May God bless the speaking and hearing of the Word. Amen. Story Telling and Reflection [Baba Son Drum] 4

2015 Stewardship: Feed Your Faith Call to Offering The Offering of Gifts [Broadway is committed to the financial support of its identity, vision, and ministry by tithing. Consider making an offering this morning of 10 percent of your income from this past week.] The Offering Of Music Sizohamba Naye (arr. Terry D. Taylor) [Broadway Choir; Ruthanne Swanson, soloist] *The Presentation of Offerings *Doxología... (tune # 95) A Dios el Padre Celestial Al hijo nuestro Redentor Y al eternal Consolador Unidos todos alabad. *The Prayer of Dedication Let us pray. God of our ancestors, whose laws are timeless and whose ways empower us, we bring to you the results of our labors. We recognize all our moments and days are precious gifts from you. We dedicate ourselves anew to fulfilling your purposes through all you entrust to us, not just through the portion we return here. Bless all that we seek to accomplish in Christ s name. Amen. Remembering Our Ancestors 5

Libation Statement (South) Leader: May we remember and honor our ancestors and the legacy they left for us as long as the sun shines and the waters flow. All: For our people everywhere, for King Shaka and Queen Nzingka and all the others known and unknown who defended our ancestral land, history, and humanity. Leader: Let us remember those who have gone before us in the struggle for freedom. (West) Leader: On this same sod we will sow our seeds and build and move in unity and strength. Here, too, we will continue their struggle for liberation and a higher level of human life. All: For the Nguzo Saba, a new system of views and values which gives identity, purpose and direction to our lives, and for the children and the fuller and freer lives they will live because we continue the struggle. (North) Leader: May our eyes be like the eagle, our strength be like the elephant, and the boldness of our life be like the lion. All: God be with us in the struggle to build a new world and for the continuing struggle through which we will inevitably rescue and reconstruct our history and humanity in our own image and according to our own needs. (East) Leader: Our fathers and mothers came here, lived, loved, struggled and built here. At this place, their love and lives and labor rose like the sun and gave strength and meaning to the day. For them, who have so much, we give in return. All: For Marcus Garvey, Malcolm X, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; for Harriet Tubman, Fannie Lou Hamer, Sojourner Truth, and May McLeod Bethune, for Nat Turner, Frederick Douglass, and W.E.B. DuBois and the others who dared to define, defend and develop our interests as a people. Leader: Let us remember all those dear to us, who are at rest. [Moment of silence.] *Litany of Benediction Let us continue to strive for justice and unity. The birth of Christ calls us to the struggle, to practice daily the principles of Kwanzaa. May the love of God, the strength of the Holy Spirit and the peace of Christ be with us now and forever more. Let s pull together, Harambee! Harambee! *Hymn of Sending Go, Tell It On the Mountain... # 251 6

*Greeting One Another Postlude Baba Son Drum Baba Son Drum was founded in the summer of 2014 when Ernest and his three sons performed at their block party. They were an instant hit! They went on to perform at the Benefit dinner for the Haitian American Museum and the African Festival of the Arts, and continue to inspire family fun and rhythm at events all over the city. Ernest is a filmmaker, an educator and a musician. He s played for dance classes and performances, plays for his non-profit children s theater group StarDreamers, and has studied with some of the masters of Melinke music. In 2002 his quest to learn more about the music and culture took him to West Africa to study djembe with Famadou Konate in Conakry, Guinea. Ernest has his Masters in Arts Management from Columbia College. He and his wife live in a musical household in Chicago with their three sons. While respecting the traditions Baba Son Drum Likes to take a lighter approach with the West African drums and have fun with the rhythms. Baba Son Drum brings families and rhythm together to celebrate life, rhythm and song. LITURGICAL RESOURCES Scripture from The Inclusive Bible. 10 FEED YOUR FAITH: 2015 UPDATE As of November 30, 2015, Broadway s income was approximately $26,000 short of projected income based on our 2015 budget. ($13k behind in pledged giving; $9k behind in loose offering; $3k behind in building use donations; and $1k behind in planned fundraising income.) Sharing our gifts is a spiritual discipline that helps us grow stronger as the body of Christ. The church s response to those in need is an expression of our faith, a confirmation of our discipleship and a witness to our love for our neighbors. You can express the spiritual discipline of giving by donating to Broadway to help us continue to be a witness for God s justice and love. Thank you! **************************** CREATING ABUNDANT LIFE: 2016 On Stewardship Sunday we pledged ourselves and our resources to the continued ministry here at Broadway.
