1 Middletown, Connecticut June 2016/Iyyar-Sivan 5776 GERMANY CLOSE UP by Rabbi Haaz I am thrilled to announce that Adath Israel has been selected as a partner for an organization called Germany Close Up and that our synagogue will be bringing a group of young adults to Berlin in November 2017 for a ten-day trip that concludes a few days before Thanksgiving. Germany Close Up is funded by a grant from the German Government s Transatlantic Program and aims to encourage German-Jewish- North American dialogue, strengthen the involvement of the North American Jewish community in transatlantic relations, and enable participants to develop their own perspectives on Germany through individual experience. There is a generous scholarship available for all young adults age which covers flights, accommodation in Germany in a double room, most meals, transportation within Germany, admission fees and event tickets. Each participant is responsible for paying a participation fee, which, based on previous trips is approximately $900. While each participant pays for his or her own flight, the cost of the flight is charged against the participation fee. There may be opportunities for additional scholarships available through our syna- (Rabbi Continued on page 2) REMEMBERING THE PAST by Eileen Daling Last month I talked about two projects that will revolutionize Adath Israel profoundly into the future. The first is the installation of an Assistive Listening System and the second is the purchasing of our new, modern High Holy Day prayer book, Mahzor Lev Shalem. While these are exciting steps for Adath Israel to take, remembering our past is also an important aspect for us as Jews. Remembering is a big part of what will be happening on Sunday, June 5 following our Congregational Annual Meeting. We will join to dedicate our permanent Holocaust Memorial. Thanks to Michele & Michael Palmer s generous donation in memory of parents, Bertha & Arthur Palmer, we are finally able to reach our long overdue goal of remembering those who were lost to us in a horrific period in our history. This was a labor of love for all those involved as they volunteered to accomplish something long past due. Many have dedicated themselves for months to accomplish this project. I want to take a minute to thank them and I sincerely hope you will also. First, thanks again to Michelle and Michael Palmer for their support and dedication to this pro- (President Continued on page 3)

2 2 (Rabbi Continued from page 1) gogue. Ultimately, this is a fantastic, ten-day experience in Germany for approximately $900. I had the opportunity to participate in a Germany Close Up trip during my final year of rabbinical school and found it to be an incredibly well-organized and well-run program. I am proud to be able to bring a group from Adath Israel to grow together through this experience and bring our reflections back to the community. While Germany Close Up forms the basic structure of their trips, we have the flexibility to set our own focus if we choose. Previous themes have included topics like green energy, the Berlin Film Festival, German-Jewish identity, and interreligious dialogue. Once our participants have completed the application process, we can decide as a group about a particular field of interest. If you are age or have children or grandchildren in that age range, please share this information with them and have them me at rabbi@adathisraelct.org to find out more information and begin the application process. Adath Israel needs a minimum of twenty people, and we can bring a maximum of thirty. Because I want to achieve the minimum to secure the trip with Germany Close Up, I will open the trip up to Wesleyan and other local synagogues. However, our members and families have first shot. I cannot speak highly enough about the quality of this trip and the impact that it will have on those who participate and on our community. Please spread the word and have our young adults reach out to me as soon as possible.. Tikkun Olam/Fundraiser IT S A WIN-WIN-WIN! Save time, aggravation, and the planet while providing funds for important causes by donating your cleaned $.05 returnable bottles and cans. From April-July the money will be donated to Middletown s Relay for Life. From August-November the money collected will benefit the Religious School. From December March the money collected will benefit the Rabbi's Discretionary Fund. In May your efforts generated $40.85 for Middletown s Relay for Life. Please drop your CLEANED cans and bottles off in the designated bucket in front of the Synagogue office. Thank you so much for helping to repair the world (Tikkun Olam) and raise a few dollars as well. Stephanie Meadow

Also to Allison Vitale from Allison Interiors for her help with fabric suggestions and her work to cover the backing board. Thanks to Ian & Melissa Gibson for their donation of old barn wood for use as framing for the project. Thank you to Lynn Bennett for always providing a wonderful array of refreshments for our many events including this one. Finally, as this is my last Kolot article for my first term as your President, I would like to thank all of my committee chairs, all the members of the Board of Directors and my awesome Executive Board for their assistance and hard work in making this year a success for me. I think we accomplished many new things while improving old ones. I sincerely hope you as the members of Adath Israel have felt the same way. With everyone s continued support, we can continue to accomplish extraordinary things. Hope to see you all at our Annual meeting and dedication on June 5. Wishing you and yours a wonderful and safe summer. As always, please remember to check out the rest of this Kolot for more events and other exciting happenings in the months to come. 14 The Interfaith Community Circle of Leadership Fund Inaugural Award Golf is a Game of Faith (And a little bit of practice, of course). You re a golfer. You know that it takes faith that your next round will be good even great. If you re not a golfer, you probably know a golfer and understand that at the heart of every round is not only those great shots, but also the camaraderie generated both during and after the round. For twenty (20) years, the Interfaith Golf Open has been a unique way of bringing together a diverse collection of people who share a common passion: a Church and a Synagogue with the core beliefs of improving the lives of those around them. Many programs and organizations dedicated to improving the quality of life for local residents have benefited from monies raised particularly the youth of our community. You have provided our young people the tools to stand up to bullying and to be Upstanders not Bystanders. At the 2015 Interfaith Golf Open, the committee chairs announced a new addition to the many ways the Interfaith Golf Open gives back to its community. The committee wanted to do even more for the region where we live, work, and play. They established The Interfaith Community Circle of Leadership Fund at the Community Foundation of Middlesex County. The Interfaith Community Circle of Leadership Fund will honor individuals and organizations who embody and promote the values and community commitment of the Interfaith Golf Open members. The first five honorees were Dick Carella, Arthur Director, Buzzy Levin, Irwin Sitkin and Gene Sullivan. Continuing to Do More. Continuing to Give Back to the Community This year The Interfaith Community Circle of Leadership Fund will honor and present its inaugural grant to an amazing group of organizations and its young leaders who not only give back, but who also demonstrate faith and the same values that the Interfaith Golf Tournament has practiced over the past twenty (20) years. The Interfaith Golf Tournament committee is pleased to award its first grant to Welcoming Middletown, represented by two incredible young women, Izzi Greenberg and Reverend Julia Burkey. Welcoming Middletown is a safety net. It is a coalition of over twenty diverse and committed faith based groups dedicated to helping displaced refugee families establish a new beginning in Middletown and, thus turn daily challenges into opportunities. Under Julia s and Izzi s leadership, Welcoming Middletown has expanded to include doctors, dentists, and Wesleyan students. It is simply Neighbors Helping New Neighbors with every day needs we all take for granted. Izzi and Julia have demonstrated leadership and wisdom beyond their young years and have started an impressive effort to make life easier for newcomers. Welcoming Middletown has been touted by many as a model for other groups around the state to replicate. Hats off to these energized individuals and to the entire group of volunteers who truly embody the tenants of the Interfaith Golf Tournament: caring for those in need in our community, regardless of religious affiliation, through donations of time, talent, and treasure; Making a difference in the lives of our youth; and ensuring the long-term health of our community. We are incredibly lucky to know so many individuals who are quiet and unassuming, humble and generous. The Interfaith Community Circle of Leadership Fund, established by a circle of leaders who look for every opportunity to do more and give more, is, we think, A Hole in One! Thank you for your generous ways! Sincerely, David Marc Dave David Dave Director and Marc Levin Congregation Adath Israel 14 Dave Gilbert and David O Brien Church of St. Mary
