3 P R AY E R O F T H E D AY Pastor: Let us pray... Congregation: Amen. F I R S T R E A D I N G 2 Samuel 11:26-12:7a When the wife of Uriah heard that her husband was dead, she made lamentation for him. When the mourning was over, David sent and brought her to his house, and she became his wife, and bore him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased the L, and the L sent Nathan to David. He came to him, and said to him, There were two men in a certain city, the one rich and the other poor. The rich man had very many flocks and herds; but the poor man had nothing but one little ewe lamb, which he had bought. He brought it up, and it grew up with him and with his children; it used to eat of his meager fare, and drink from his cup, and lie in his bosom, and it was like a daughter to him. Now there came a traveler to the rich man, and he was loath to take one of his own flock or herd to prepare for the wayfarer who had come to him, but he took the poor man s lamb, and prepared that for the guest who had come to him. Then David s anger was greatly kindled against the man. He said to Nathan, As the L lives, the man who has done this deserves to die; he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity. Nathan said to David, You are the man! Reader: The Word of the Lord. Congregation: Thanks be to God. P S A L M S A L M 2 5 To You, O Lord 3
4 S E C O N D R E A D I N G Galatians 2:15-21 We ourselves are Jews by birth and not Gentile sinners; yet we know that a person is justified not by the works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ. And we have come to believe in Christ Jesus, so that we might be justified by faith in Christ, and not by doing the works of the law, because no one will be justified by the works of the law. But if, in our effort to be justified in Christ, we ourselves have been found to be sinners, is Christ then a servant of sin? Certainly not! But if I build up again the very things that I once tore down, then I demonstrate that I am a transgressor. For through the law I died to the law, so that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. I do not nullify the grace of God; for if justification comes through the law, then Christ died for nothing. Reader: The Word of the Lord. Congregation: Thanks be to God. 5 H O LY G O S PEL Luke 7:36-50 One of the Pharisees asked Jesus to eat with him, and he went into the Pharisee s house and took his place at the table. And a woman in the city, who was a sinner, having learned that he was eating in the Pharisee s house, brought an alabaster jar of ointment. She stood behind him at his feet, weeping, and began to bathe his feet with her tears and to dry them with her hair. Then she continued kissing his feet and anointing them with the ointment. Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw it, he said to himself, If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what kind of woman this is who is touching him that she is a sinner. Jesus spoke up and said to him, Simon, I have something to say to you. Teacher, he replied, Speak. A certain creditor had two debtors; one owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. When they could not pay, he canceled the debts for both of them. Now which of them will love him more? Simon answered, I suppose the one for whom he canceled the greater debt. And Jesus said to him, You have judged rightly. Then turning toward the woman, he said to Simon, Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave me no water for my feet, but she has bathed my feet with her tears and dried them with her hair. You gave me no kiss, but from the time I came in she has not stopped kissing my feet. You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment. Therefore, I tell you, her sins, which were many, have been forgiven; hence she has shown great love. But the one to whom little is forgiven, loves little. Then he said to her, Your sins are forgiven. But those who were at the table with him began to say among themselves, Who is this who even forgives sins? And he said to the woman, Your faith has saved you; go in peace. Pastor: The Gospel of the Lord. Congregation: Praise to you, O Christ. 5

9 Taking Faith Home CARING CONVERSATIONS Discuss in your home or small group: Recall a me when someone forgave you. How did you feel? Is it some mes hard to forgive others? Why? What does God s gi of forgiveness through Jesus mean to you? Jesus said a person who has been forgiven loves much. How does God s forgiveness affect your rela onships with others? SERVICE Ask each person in your home or small group to name a person who has shown love to him or her. Plan an act of kindness to show love in return. RITUALS AND TRADITIONS In the story of the woman who anoints Jesus feet, Jesus offers a number of examples from his cultural se ng of how to welcome another person into one s home. Hospitality is an important act of love and service, as well as being a Chris an tradi on. Consider any of the following ways of welcoming others into your home: Greet visitors with the words, Peace be with you. If a meal is included in the visit, light a candle and say, Jesus Christ is the light of the world. Read and discuss a Bible passage.
