1 THE ANGLICAN CHURCH OF ST JOHN THE EVANGELIST, GORDON THE EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY 4 OCTOBER 2015 ANNUAL CHURCH FÊTE IN 6 DAYS SATURDAY 9AM TO 2PM Dear Friends, There have been some exciting new developments in the diocese recently that I am not sure everyone is across. The first is that the Rector of Turramurra, Dr Michael Stead, is to become the new Bishop of South Sydney. This is a great appointment. Michael is a wonderful man of God who is well organised, thoughtful and wise. He will be a great adjunct to the bench of bishops. Please pray for Fr Michael, his wife Felicity, and their children as they move. Please also pray for the parish of St James, Turramurra as they seek a new priest. A new priest has come to our namesake church in Balmain. Fr Peter Yeats was inducted Thursday. He is a friend of mine and also a great friend of Bishop Michael. Please pray for Fr Peter and his wife Karolina as they commence their new ministry in Balmain. Please also keep myself, Jen Lum and Charles George in your prayers as we prepare to attend Synod. Fr Keith W O R S H I P S E R V I C E T I M E S I was glad when they said unto me, We will go into the house of the Lord. 4 SIX DAYS UNTIL THE FÊTE SATURDAY FROM 9:00AM T0 2:00PM A Suggested Pre-Fête To-Do List * Place your FRUIT AND VEGETABLE order today, using the order forms in the narthex. Although later telephone orders, to Alan Tilley, , are welcome, pre-orders will be discounted 5%. * SPREAD THE WORD by taking FÊTE FLYERS home with you to letter box drop in your street, to post on bulletin boards at your place of business, and to hand to every friend you run into between now and the Fête. Even a dozen flyers distributed per family would be beneficial publicity. * The CAKE STALL and CHOCOLATE WHEEL are two attractions that too often have had to shut down early due to running out of stock. Let s keep them TRADING LONGER this year. Cake boxes and trays are in the narthex. Double batches would be greatly appreciated. Ask your children or grandchildren to select prizes for the Chocolate Wheel. * Could you loan the Fête a few CHAIRS, folding or otherwise, for the FAMILY RELAXATION AREA? TINY TABLES AND CHAIRS for very small people would also be welcome. Contact Cynthia Keithly. * Drop off your RAFFLE TICKET STUBS and payment during the week. This is to allow the raffle ticket team to unstaple books of tickets, check that names are written on every ticket, and fold all tickets. * Stop by the BANK for small change for your booth s float and for plenty of walking around money. *Take your NAME BADGE home with you today to wear at the Fête and obtain a FÊTE WORKER BADGE from Pat Gaudry on the day. * Help is needed on Thursday from 1:00PM for SET-UP and Saturday after 2:00PM for DISMANTLING. Many hands make light work. * PRAY for good weather, a good turnout, and a chance for conversation with visitors. Questions, problems, offers of help Pat Gaudry, telephone , patgaudry@yahoo.com. On this our big day, our biggest fundraiser of the year, our chance to meet and greet people who may be looking for a church home, EVERYONE S HELP IS NEEDED. 4
5 From Sue Dunston The highlight of the St John s Spring Fair will be a presentation by the Barker College Cadets, BRINGING TO LIFE THE STORIES OF THE FOURTEEN AUSTRALIAN SOLDIERS WHO WERE KILLED DURING WORLD WAR AND COMMEMORATED IN OUR CHURCH AND CEMETERY. Kathie Reith and David Wilkins from the Ku-ring-gai Historical Society will be present to answer questions and sell copies of their book Rallying The Troops. If any parishioners or their friends are related to Captain George Concanon, Private Leonard Taylor, Private Reginald Homfray, Private Joseph Bickell, Private Thuiller Cardew, Private Harold Oliver, Private Roy Robertson, Private George Edwards, Sergeant Charles Golding-Howard, Gunner Wilfred Crisford, Private Harold Baker, Captain Nowell Sievers, Captain Dudley Adams or Second Lieutenant Raynes Royle, they may be interested to hear the stories of their ancestors. Presentations begin at 9:30AM and will take the form of a leisurely stroll through the cemetery, stopping at the various gravesites marked with an Australian flag and a large red poppy. The poppies correspond with the mural in the church of the 1,612 knitted red poppies representing those from Ku-ring-gai who served in the Great War. Cadets will give a brief synopsis of the soldier s life, where he grew up, when he enlisted, when he sailed and so on. There will be a booklet on these soldiers and a questionnaire for the children to fill in. It should prove a most interesting, informative and educational morning. Please come and learn more about these soldiers and if you have relatives or friends with you who have not seen the Ku-ring-gai Poppy Project mural, step into the church and show it to them. 5
6 On Wednesday the 23rd, Betty and John Ross Edwards delivered the twenty POZIÈRES KNEELERS to Ms. Jayne Simpson at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, who will send them to Pozières through the diplomatic mail service. Jayne was very happy to receive them and she was quite interested and asked many questions about the project. Congratulations to all those ladies of the parish who worked so hard to bring this project to a successful conclusion. One identical kneeler is also in the Warrior s Chapel here at St John s and another is in progress and will be sent to the Australian War Memorial when finished. 6
7 SUNDAY, 25 OCTOBER IS TRY CHOIR SUNDAY! Members of the congregation are invited to either (1) robe and sing with the Parish Choir for the 9:30AM service (meet at 9:00AM in the hall) or (2) join with the choir singing the motet (hymn 295) (carry your hymn book to Communion, then go to the choir stalls, returning to your seat after the motet). All are very welcome. Why not give it a go or invite friends to come to church who may enjoy it? You are not signed up for life! New members of the choir are always welcome. There is no midweek rehearsal and you are welcome even if your life precludes you coming every Sunday. Donations or pledges toward, or questions regarding, REPLACING THE ORGAN may be directed to Bill Killinger, Reece McCormack or Don Yorath. If you would like to sponsor FLOWERS IN THE CHURCH in memory of a loved one or to celebrate a birthday or anniversary, contact one of the two Jans - Jan Kneeshaw, , jan.kneeshaw@optusnet.com.au or Jan McLachlan, , janmclachlan@bigpond.com. 7
