9am Holy Communion Christ Church, Regent, Whangārei, 15 July 2018 Welcome to our service today. Warm greetings if you are visiting; we re glad to have you with us. Morning tea will be served after the service; please stay to chat if you can. OPENING HYMN: 527 ON JORDAN'S BANK THE BAPTIST'S CRY 1609 Michael Prätorius. Tr Charles Coffin On Jordan's bank the Baptist's cry Announces that the Lord is nigh; Awake and hearken, for he brings Glad tidings of the King of kings! Then cleansed be every life from sin; Make straight the way for God within, And let us all our hearts prepare For Christ to come and enter there. We hail you as our Saviour, Lord, Our refuge and our great reward; Without your grace we waste away Like flowers that wither and decay. Stretch forth your hand, our health restore, And make us rise to fall no more; Oh, let your face upon us shine And fill the world with love divine. All praise to you, eternal Son, Whose advent has our freedom won, Whom with the Father we adore, And Holy Spirit, evermore. 1
Grace and peace to you from God. God fill you with truth and joy. This is the day which the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it. Let us pray Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden; cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, so that we may truly love you, and worthily praise your holy name; through our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen. LITURGY OF RECONCILIATION God has promised forgiveness to all who truly repent, turn to Christ in faith, and are themselves forgiving. In silence we call to mind our sins. Silence In God there is forgiveness. Loving and all-seeing God, Forgive us where we have failed to support one another and to be what we claim to be. Forgive us where we have failed to serve you; and where our thoughts and actions have been contrary to yours we ask your pardon. ABSOLUTION Through the cross of Christ, God have mercy on you, pardon you, and set you free. Know that you are forgiven, and be at peace. God strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in life eternal. Amen. 2
The peace of Christ rule in our hearts The word of Christ dwell in us richly. COLLECT for the 15th SUNDAY in ORDINARY TIME Let us pray: Living God, the prophets faithfully served you, fearlessly speaking your truth; grant us courage to follow their example, and witness to your truth, that we might live lives worthy of your calling. Through Jesus Christ, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God now and for ever. Amen. A READING from the Epistle to the Ephesians Eph 1:3-14 God has chosen his people as adopted children, bringing us forgiveness through Christ. God has given us the Holy Spirit as a down-payment on our eternal inheritance.... Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church Thanks be to God PSALM 85: Let me hear what you will say O Lord: for you will speak peace to your people, to your servants whose hearts are turned to you. 9. For deliverance is at hand for those who fear you: so that your glory may dwell in our land. 10. Mercy and faithfulness have met together: justice and peace have embraced each other. 11. Faithfulness will spring up from the ground: and righteousness will look down from heaven. 12. You Lord will give prosperity: and our land shall yield its harvest. 13. Justice shall go before you: and the path for your feet shall be peace. Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and shall be forever. Amen 3
GOSPEL HYMN - WHAT THE LORD HAS DONE ES243 Reuben Morgan Hillsongs, CMG ccli Let the weak say, I am strong Let the poor say, I am rich Let the blind say, I can see It's what the Lord has done in me (repeat) CHORUS: Hosanna, hosanna! To the Lamb that was slain Hosanna, hosanna, Jesus died and rose again (repeat) Into the river I will wade, there my sins are washed away From the heavens mercy streams, Of the saviour s love for me I will rise from waters deep, into the saving arms of God And I will sing salvation songs, Jesus Christ has set me free...chorus THE HOLY GOSPEL ACCORDING TO MARK Mark 6:14-29: Praise and glory to God King Herod hears about Jesus, and thinks John the Baptist, whom he had beheaded at the request of his daughter, has come back to life. After John s disciples hear of John s death, they take his body and lay it in a tomb. This is the gospel of Christ Praise to Christ, the Word. SERMON INTERCESSION AND THANKSGIVING Let us pray for the Church and the world, giving thanks for God s goodness... The Bidding: It is good to give thanks to the Lord We will sing praises to our God. 4
THE PEACE Kia tau tonu te rangimārie o te Atua ki a koutou. The peace of God be always with you. And also with you We exchange a sign of peace OFFERING HYMN: 221 GOD IS WORKING HIS PURPOSE OUT Arthur Campbell Aigner 1894 God is working his purpose out as year succeeds to year: God is working his purpose out, and the time is drawing near; nearer and nearer draws the time, the time that shall surely be, when the earth shall be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea. From utmost east to utmost west, wherever foot hath trod, by the mouth of many messengers goes forth the voice of God; give ear to me, ye continents, ye isles, give ear to me, that the earth may filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea. How can we do to the work of God: to prosper and increase harmony in the human race the reign of the Prince of Peace? What can we do to hasten the time the time that shall surely be, when the earth shall be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea. (continued overleaf) 5
All we can do is nothing worth unless God blesses the deed; vainly we hope for the harvest-tide till God gives life to the seed; nearer and nearer draws the time, the time that shall surely be, when the earth shall be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea. PRESENTATION OF THE GIFTS THE GREAT THANKSGIVING The Lord is here God s Spirit is with us. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to offer thanks and praise. All are seated as we pray It is right indeed that we should praise you, God of love, our source and our fulfilment, for you create all things, and in you we live and move and have our being. Your glory is manifest as the waters cover the sea. When the times had at last grown full and the earth had ripened in abundance, you made us in your image for yourself. And even though we turn from you, again and again you call us to yourself, and in every age, promise liberation. As a mother tenderly gathers her children, you embraced a people as your own to raise us in your way of compassionate love. From your own being you sent Jesus among us, incarnate of the Holy Spirit and born of Mary, our sister. Jesus revealed your care for all you have made, and showed us your way of reconciliation. 6
Looking forward to the joy of new life Jesus suffered the pangs of the cross and in rising again became the first-born of the renewed family. You sent your Holy Spirit and gave birth to us your church. Your Spirit stays to nurture and to guide us. Now we gather around your table, and with all creation we hymn your praise for your unending love, as we say, Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. To you indeed be glory, almighty God, because on the night before he died, your Son, Jesus Christ, took bread; when he had given you thanks, he broke it, gave it to his disciples, and said: Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you; do this to remember me. After supper he took the cup; when he had given you thanks, he gave it to them and said: This cup is the new covenant in my blood poured out for you; do this as often as you drink it to remember me. And so in this great sacrament we celebrate and proclaim the mystery of our faith. Dying, you destroyed our death, Rising, you restored our life. Lord Jesus, come in glory Therefore, loving God, recalling now Christ s death and resurrection, we ask you to accept this our sacrifice of praise. Send your Holy Spirit upon us and our celebration, that we may be fed with the body and blood of your Son and be filled with your life and goodness. Strengthen us to do your work, and to be your body in the world. 7
Unite us in Christ and give us your peace. Through your Holy Spirit, burning as a flame, gentle as a dove, may we who receive these gifts live lives of justice, love, and prayer, and be a voice for those who are not heard. In union with your whole church we worship you, O God, in songs of everlasting praise. Blessing, honour and glory be yours, here and everywhere, now and forever. Amen. THE LORD S PRAYER We sing and pray Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen. We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, for we all share the one bread. All are welcome to receive the bread and wine of Communion or to request a blessing. If you prefer gluten-free wafers, please come to the right-hand altar rail, and indicate by extending your left hand. 8
AFTER COMMUNION Truly, the Lord s salvation is very near to those who fear him, that his glory may dwell in our land. Ps 85 Together we pray Faithful God, in this communion you increase our faith and hope and love. Lead us in the path of Christ who is your Word of life. Amen. A BLESSING May God bless you with discomfort, at easy answers, half-truths, And superficial relationships. May God bless you with anger at injustice, oppression, And exploitation of people. May God bless you with tears to shed for those who suffer pain, Rejection, hunger and war. And may God bless you with enough foolishness to believe that you can make a difference in the world, And may the peace of God Amen CLOSING SONG: FACING A TASK UNFINISHED (tune 636 Aurelia ) Samuel Wesley. Words Frank Houghton OMF. Facing a task unfinished That drives us to our knees A need that, undiminished Rebukes our slothful ease We, who rejoice to know you Renew before your throne The solemn pledge we owe you To go and make you known Where other lords beside you Hold their unhindered sway Where forces that defied you Defy you still today With none to heed their crying For life, and love, and light Unnumbered souls are dying And pass into the night (continued overleaf) 9
We bear the torch that, flaming fell from the hands of those Who gave their lives proclaiming that Jesus died and rose Ours is the same commission The same glad message ours Fired by the same ambition To you we yield our powers O Father who sustained them O Spirit who inspired Saviour, whose love constrained them To toil with zeal untired From cowardice defend us From lethargy awake! Forth on your errands send us To labour for your sake DISMISSAL It is time to go out and share God s secret purpose which has been disclosed in Jesus Christ. With God s help, Amen! Share that secret with others by the way you live: with the words on your lips, by the deeds of your hands, with the prayers in your minds, and through the love in your hearts. With God s help, Amen! And so, go now to love and serve the Lord; go in peace. Amen! We go in the name of Christ. Eucharistic Prayer Bosco Peters ( 10
