2 Page The John Whitmer Historical Association Newsletter N o. 88. From the New Executive Directors After a decade or so as mere JWHA groupies, the two of us were startled to be chosen to replace Mike Karpowicz and John Hamer as Executive Directors. First of all, no one not even Emma Smith or Porter Rockwell could have gotten a bead on the seamless system by which Mike and John have honored us so well in recent years... the urbanity, the artisanship, the efficiency, the quiet authority. JWHA has surely enjoyed the gold standard in association management. But we have now come into possession of all the spreadsheets, the passwords, the archives, the phone messages, and the boxes in the swept corner of the storeroom. We don t promise all that former elegance and charm... just our dedication to our new task. After all, we can hardly ask more than the opportunity to do what we love for a cause that we love with people that we love. We re looking forward to it. New from John Whitmer Books Mormon Graves in Kirtland: A Biographical Dictionary of Early Saints Buried in the Kirtland Area BY JANET LISONBEE Kirtland, Ohio, was the original gathering place of the Latter Day Saint movement. Home to the first Mormon temple, the Kirtland area is also the final resting place for over a hundred members of the early church. Many of these Saints died in Kirtland during the Mormon period ( ), while others continued to live in the area long after most of their coreligionists moved west. In this essential resource for family historians, genealogists, and anyone interested in early Mormon history, Janet Lisonbee tracks down the burial locations and familial information of these early members. Also included are brief biographies that help to bring their stories to life. ISBN pages, maps, photographs, index, paperback, 9.95 Alexander: Joseph & Emma Smith s Far West Son EDITED BY RONALD E. ROMIG Historian Ronald E. Romig, editor of Emma s Nauvoo and Emma s Family, continues his popular documents series with a documentary biography of Alexander Hale Smith. The third son of Joseph and Emma Smith to live to adulthood, Alexander was born at Far West, Missouri, in He moved to Nauvoo, Illinois, as a child and lived there half of his life. Alexander eventually served as an apostle, a member of the First Presidency, and as presiding patriarch of the RLDS Church. Much of Alexander s missionary ministry focused on the U.S. far west, including California and Utah. He also performed a South Pacific mission to Tahiti, Australia, and Hawaii. He died in the Nauvoo Mansion House in In this accessible new book, Romig paints a vivid picture of Joseph and Emma s Far West son using a wealth of contemporary writings and images.
