2 The Prelude *Chiming of the Hour *Prayer for Renewal of the Church (in unison) Renew your church, Lord, your people in this land. Save us from cheap words and self-deception in your service. In the power of the Holy Spirit, transform us and shape us by your cross. Amen. Welcome and Announcements *The Call to Worship God meets us in our greatest need and satisfies us with divine presence and provision. In gratitude, let us worship the Lord our God. *Hymn Be Thou My Vision UMH 451 The Opening Prayer Life-changing God, you have touched us and transformed us to reach out to all who hunger for what only you can give. Keep our feet in your paths and bless us to multiply blessings to others, through Jesus Christ our Redeemer and Lord. Amen. Time of Sharing and Prayer Celebrations of God s Grace and Prayer Concerns The Prayers of the People/The Lord s Prayer (UMH 895) The Children s Message [Canned Food Offering Collected] *Hymn Sweet Hour of Prayer UMH 496 The Prayer for Illumination All-knowing God, you have satisfied our hunger at sunset and held us close through nights of wrestling. Now let the day break with your blessing. Awaken and illumine us by your Word that we may behold your likeness. Amen. The Old Testament Reading Genesis 32:22-31 p. 51 Special Music Kay Roy
3 The Gospel Reading Matthew 14:13-21 p This is the Word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to you, Lord Jesus Christ. The Message The Feeding of the Five Thousand The Receiving of God s Tithes and Our Offerings Special Music Kay Roy *The Doxology (UMH 95) *The Prayer of Dedication: We thank you, our Father, that you have empowered us to participate in the miraculous multiplying ministry of your Son. Receive now these gifts you have provided us out of your abundance that your miracle ministry may multiply to satisfy the hungry of this world today; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Invitation, Confession, Silent Meditation, and Pardon Let us confess our sins in the presence of the One who blesses us and meets our need. God of compassion, we are sick. We have wrestled all night with worry instead of resting in you. We have asserted our own goodness instead of awakening to yours. We have turned away those hungry for your help instead of trusting you and feeding them from your limitless supply of blessings. Forgive us, heal us, and help us to hold on to you. We call upon you, for you will answer us, O God, through Jesus Christ our Lord. [All pray in silence] The God of steadfast love is our refuge and Savior. In Christ, we who are broken are healed, forgiven, filled, and transformed. Alleluia! Amen. Service of Holy Communion The Great Thanksgiving (UMH 13) Giving the Bread and the Cup *Hymn God Be with You till We Meet Again UMH 672 *The Charge and Blessing: Touched, changed, called, and empowered, go now in the power and provision of Christ to heal the sick, feed the hungry, and serve the world. Christ himself, who holds you in his hands, has blessed you, broken you, and given you as his gift to the world. May the grace of Christ be multiplied to you and through you, now and forever. Amen.

Bishop Cho and our DS, Ted Smith, are challenging all pastors and church members to contribute $10 each toward this fight. How to Give: You can text "Malaria VA" to to make a $10 donation and save a life. (Be sure to put a space between Malaria and VA.) You can also designate Imagine No Malaria on your check and place it in the offering plate.
6 Pack the Backpacks! The new school year will be here soon. We will partner with Sealston Elementary School to Pack the Backpacks. Take a backpack and fill it with school supplies on the list provided by Sealston Elementary. Return the filled backpacks no later than Sunday, August 24 when we will have a Blessing of the Backpacks before delivering them to the school. Middle High/Senior High Sunday School Class: Beginning Sunday, August 31, a Sunday School class will be offered for all youth in grades The class will meet in the Youth Room upstairs. Tina Lauber has offered to teach the class. Any parents and grandparents whose youth are interested in the class might consider joining one of our two available Sunday School classes. Heartwood Offering: Your extravagant generosity has resulted in gifts totaling $790 for this mission outreach of the Fredericksburg District. Each church was challenged to raise $250 to $500 and the good folks at Fletcher s Chapel have exceeded that goal. It s not too late to support this special offering if you haven t already done so. Food for Thought: In the English language, in some contexts, the word "bread" is synonymous with food. In other parts of the world, that's not true. For example, in Eastern Asia, when you say "food," people automatically think of rice. In Malaysia, the same applies to sweet potatoes. For every culture there is a "staff of life." For most it's bread. It's the basic thing you need to stay alive. But all these words - bread, rice, and sweet potatoes - can also refer to the emotional and spiritual basics that keep us alive. There are a few people without whose love and presence in my life, I would find it difficult, if not impossible, to survive. There's one or two I wouldn't mind getting away from a while, just to see how I would do without them, but I need most all of them. And without a faith that receives regular nourishment from the Word of God, all of the Word of God, and all of the people of God, I could not survive. Bread is the biblical metaphor because that was the staple, basic, bottom-line food source of Jesus' day. If Jesus had been from Malaysia, it would have been sweet potatoes, and communion could get a little messy.
