2 Presidential Welcome J O H N W H I T M E R I am very honored to welcome you to the 36th Annual Conference of the John Whitmer Historical Association the first time our association has ever met in the state of Wisconsin. Wisconsin was an important center of Mormonism in the period from : the Time of Transition for the Latter Day Saint movement that is our conference s theme. Not only was Voree (Burlington), Wisconsin, the original headquarters of James J. Strang s church, but it was also the congregations in nearby Waukesha, Beloit, Yellowstone, and Zarahemla (Blanchardville), Wisconsin, which formed the early nucleus of what eventually became the Community of Christ. We want to welcome all of our presenters, panelists, and participants, but I d like to mention a few highlights. For our Sterling M. McMurrin Lecture, we are excited to have one of the most distinguished scholars in Mormon studies: Roger D. Launius, Senior Curator at the Smithsonian Institution s National Air and Space Museum. Roger will address the subject of Darwinism, Creationism, and the Mormon Experience. We are likewise pleased to have D. Michael Quinn back this year. Mike will tell us about The Ambiguous History of Us-Versus-Them in the Mormon Experience. For those of you new to Mormon studies, I highly recommend Jan Shipps s Introduction to Mormonism, which will take place Saturday morning, immediately prior to our tour of the historic sites of Old Voree. All in all, this promises to be an action-packed, stimulating and enlightening weekend welcome and enjoy! Barbara B. Walden President JWHA
3 The John Whitmer Historical Association : A Time of Transition Our program this year focuses on a critical period in the history of Mormonism a moment when the primary extant branches of the Latter Day Saint movement emerged and also when their different trajectories were set. At the church s Nauvoo headquarters, Brigham Young staked his claim to the presidency based on his position as head of a leading quorum, the Council of the Twelve. In the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), that tradition has been maintained, with the result that the church president has always been the senior-most of the apostles. Young also attempted to extend the Mormonism known to Nauvoo s inner circle in 1844 to all the Saints transforming secret practices like plural marriage into more widespread, public institutions. As the LDS Church moved beyond some of these Nauvoo practices, other Brighamite groups (Mormon Fundamentalists) emerged to maintain them. For the Saints who did not go west, the period from was equally transformative. The majority of these members were scattered across the Midwest and Northeast in hundreds of branches of the church. Exposed to Nauvoo developments only through rumor, these Saints believed in an earlier form of Mormonism as practiced in Kirtland and Missouri. Some, like David Whitmer, longed for the pure Church of Christ he had known in Fayette, New York. Numerous rival leaders and church organizations emerged to vie for the loyalties of the branches: Sidney Rigdon (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, 1844), James J. Strang (Voree, Wisconsin, 1844), William McLellin/David Whitmer (Kirtland, Ohio, 1847), William Smith (Palestine Grove, Illinois, 1847), Charles B. Thompson (St. Louis, Missouri, 1848), James C. Brewster (Springfield, Illinois, 1848), Lyman Wight (Zodiac, Texas, 1849), Jason W. Briggs (Zarahemla, Wisconsin, 1851), and Alpheus Cutler (Manti, Iowa, 1853), to name only the most prominent. Many of these leaders agreed that one or more of Joseph and Emma Smith s sons would eventually rise to church presidency by blood-right. When Joseph Smith III accepted the leadership of Briggs s organization in 1860, he became a rallying symbol for many Midwestern Saints and he also established a precedent for lineal succession that the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints maintained until Opponents of lineal succession, including William Bickerton (1862) and Granville Hedrick (1863) organized their own churches in the wake of Joseph III s affiliation with the RLDS Church.
4 3 6 T H A N N U A L C O N F E R E N C E Strang s grave in Burlington, Wisconsin. JOHN HAMER COMMUNITY OF CHRIST LIBRARY-ARCHIVES James J. Strang. The Prophet James J. Strang James Jesse Strang is one of the most fascinating personalities in Mormon history. Although only a recent convert at the time of Joseph Smith s martyrdom, Strang quickly emerged as one of the strongest claimants in the ensuing Succession Crisis. Of all the rival leaders, Strang s ministry most closely approached that of Smith. He reported angelic visitations, the discovery and translation of ancient records, and he issued new revelations. Thousands of Mormons affiliated with his organization, including a number of prominent early leaders. As many as four thousand Saints moved to the Strangite gathering places at Voree and Beaver Island during Strang s lifetime. After he embraced polygamy, Strang was husband to five wives and father to twelve children who lived to adulthood. Strang suffered martyrdom in On his deathbed, he refused to appoint a successor, telling his apostles to take care of their families as best they could, and to await divine instruction. Strang is buried in Burlington Cemetery.
5 4 The John Whitmer Historical Association Welcome to Old Voree There is a land the Lord hath blessed, A land of peace, a land of rest, He s made a secure abode, To all that love the word of God, A place of knowledge and of light, Of wisdom, glory, strength, and might, Ho! all ye Saints then come and see, It is the City of Voree! William Smith Soon after the death of Joseph Smith, James Strang established Voree as a gathering place for Latter Day Saints. Most of Strang s followers remained in branches scattered across the Midwest and Northeast, but several hundred Saints relocated from Nauvoo, Illinois, and other places to Voree. The Strangite church established a stone quarry and built many fine stone houses, several of which survive. The town included a blacksmith shop, a tavern, a school house and a tithing house. The church excavated a foundation for a large temple and they operated a print house, publishing the Voree Herald (later Zion s Reveille and the Gospel Herald). In 1850, church headquarters was relocated to Beaver Island, Michigan. Strang was mortally wounded there in 1856 and was brought back to Voree, where he died. Old Voree historical marker. 22 SIGNATURE BOOKS A s Joseph Smith enlisted men and women in the cause of polygamy, a pattern of initiation developed, including what might be called courtship and persuasion long walks in the woods, urgent appeals, secrets confided, promises made, and threats to discourage rejection or disclosure. This volume contains a comprehensive scrutiny of available records from Nauvoo, Illinois. Readers will learn how the practice spread among some 200 men and 700 women even before the dispersion out of the city. The author traces a recurring fascination with polygamy back to the sixteenth century and forward to the nineteenth in answer to the question of where the idea in Nauvoo came from.
