Introduction Satan has no friends. He does not distinguish between an adult and a child when it comes to his plan for human beings. He wants to snare us in the trap of temptation and cause as much pain as he can when we give in to sin. Children are often unaware of the traps the devil has laid out for them. Because their eyes are not open and wary, they end up falling into traps of lying, deceit, stealing, revenge, and many other temptations. In this series of lessons, your children will look at the story of the original sin from the perspective of each of the characters involved: Satan (serpent), Adam, Eve, and God. As we examine the story from all of these different perspectives, we will see the range of emotions and impact that the same series of events had on each of these characters. As you teach your children these lessons, your goal is to help them understand that we ALL are tempted and we ALL have to choose how to handle that temptation. In addition, God s response to ALL of us, whether we resist the temptation or fall prey to it, is the same...he loves us and comes looking for us. May God bless you and your ministry! 6 The Elements The DVD: Included on the DVD are the Intro Video segments, Rap It Up Videos featuring Skittles, a fiveminute countdown to begin each service, plus BLOOPERS! (additional countdowns can be found on our Countdowns and Transitions For Kids Ministry DVDs). The Music CD: Contained on this music disc are game songs, the BIG IDEA sound byte, the world famous OFFERING TIME song, plus a bonus song by Skittles. The Data CD: This CD contains graphics and artwork of the Fruit of Failure logo for you to use for promo. Also included are PowerPoint games, slides for use during illustrated sermons, and PowerPoint slides for each Big Idea and Power Verse. You also get Family Devotions that can either be sent home with the children or used as a small group activity in the service itself. Also included are Weekly Student Devotions to hand out to parents each week. The BIG IDEA: This is the main thought you want to get across to the kids during the week s lesson. The BIG IDEA is a simple statement that sums up the entire week s lesson. Sometimes it rhymes, sometimes it relies on rhythm, and other times it is just crazy fun! The plan is to have the kids learn the BIG IDEA by repetition. Included on the CD is the sound byte Hey! What s The Big Idea? (track #1). This is a sound byte that your sound engineer can play as many times during the service as desired. Each time the kids hear the sound byte, they should stand up on their feet and say the week s BIG IDEA. The Intro Video: This video clip introduces the topic we will be tackling each week. Hosted by Parker, these videos are quick and to the point! We suggest you open your service with this segment to help set the tone for the rest of the time. The intro video also teaches the BIG IDEA and POWER VERSE each week! Game Time: Each week a game has been provided. Most of them are themed with the lesson being taught that week. There are also high energy instrumental game songs included on the Music CD. Some of them are 60-second versions (to be used for games with a one-minute time limit), and some of them are extended versions. More music can be found on our Crazy Kids Game Music CDs at Puppet Skits: Use your favorite puppets to perform these skits. Most of them are puppets interacting with humans, which can be you or any member of your team. Names can be changed for each specific church and situation. Illustrated Messages: Because kids tend to learn best if you combine speaking the truth with visual illustrations, we have written an illustrated sermon to be used each week. Materials are listed, and manuscripts are provided. Each illustrated sermon comes with a PowerPoint slide for each main point. The Elements page 2

How TO USE THE LESSON PLAN WORKSHEET The first page of each lesson includes a lesson plan for the service with a suggested order of service that you may follow. On the second page of each lesson is a worksheet with a schedule of events for your service with blanks that you fill in and photocopy for your team of workers. Please note that each lesson worksheet includes Intro Video, Game Time, Illustrated Sermon, and the other lesson segments we provide with the curriculum. Just fill in the blanks as you plan your service and give them to the people who help with your service. How To Use Your Lesson Plan Worksheet page 3

We must always be aware of Satan s desire to cause us to fail! The thief s purpose is to steal, kill, and destroy. - John 10:10 With God s Help, I Know I Can Stomp All Over Satan s Plan! Intro Video Satan s Plan For Your Life Puppet Skit It Could Never Happen To Me! Offering Time Praise Songs Game Time Bite It! We all face temptation. Some are tempted to lie, others are tempted to disobey, still others are tempted to cheat, steal, and hurt others. Satan has a plan to trap us into temptation and draw us into sin. Each day he sets traps to lure us into disobeying God. Sadly, many people do not realize this. If we are going to avoid temptation, we must be aware that Satan is out there. We must be constantly aware of the traps he s laid out for us. If we ever think it could never happen to me, there s nothing to worry about, then we will likely fall into his trap. A strong Christian will be on the lookout and avoid the temptation trap. 11 Puppet Skit Character: Silly Willy is a hyperactive puppet that thrives on scaring the leaders/workers. (You can use any puppet your kids are familiar with in your services.) Leader: What an important lesson we are learning today. (Silly Willy makes some noise over by the puppet stage. When the leader goes to check it out, Silly Willy jumps up and scares them.) Leader: Silly Willy! You scared me! Why do you want to do that? Silly Willy: Cause it s hilarious! Leader: Not to me! Silly Willy: But, it is to the kids! Right, kids? (allow kids to scream their approval) Leader: Well, it s not funny to me. But, anyway, what brings you here this morning? Silly Willy: I heard you guys out here talking about sin and stuff. Leader: That s right. We are going to be learning the story of the Garden of Eden and how Adam and Eve committed the very first sin. Silly Willy: Really? Well, why do we need to learn about what happened to THEM? Leader: Well, so that we don t make the same mistakes and sin. Silly Willy: Not me. I don t have to worry about that. Leader: What do you mean? Silly Willy: I never have to worry about falling into the devil s trap. Leader: What makes you think you don t have to worry about that? Silly Willy: Because I am the best Christian ever. I am immune to sin. I can t sin. I am too good. So, I don t have to worry about watching out for temptation. I am the best. Leader: Now, Silly Willy, I don t know about that. The Bible teaches us that the devil wants to steal, kill, and destroy us. He wants to make all of us fall into sin. That means we ALL must be aware and watch out for the traps he puts out! (CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE) Lesson One - Satan s Plan For Your Life Page 8

Puppet Skit (continued) Silly Willy: You mean, even I have to be careful and watch out for temptation? Leader: That s right. ALL of us have to be careful. We can t think it could never happen to us or else we may let our guard down and fall into temptation. Silly Willy: I don t want that! That would be terrible! Leader: It certainly would! Silly Willy: So, what do I do? What do I do? Leader: You have to always keep your guard up. Always look out for the devil s traps and pray that God will give you the strength to overcome it. Silly Willy: Wow! I sure am glad I talked to you today. I am going to always keep my eyes open to make sure I don t fall into temptation. Leader: Good decision! We ll see you later, Silly Willy! Silly Willy: See you later everyone! Bye! Lesson One - Satan s Plan For Your Life Page 9

Game Time Bite It! Pre-Game: Our suggestion is that you signal it s game time not by saying OK, so now it is time to play a game, but rather allowing the Let s Play A Game song (from the music CD provided) to be the audio signal. As soon as they hear the song interrupt you while you are talking, they will know they are about to experience one of the wildest games of their lives. Items Needed For Game: Twelve apples, 2 baskets or containers, 1 table How To Play: Choose six boys and six girls to participate. Line the boys and girls up in two single file lines facing the table set up across the room. Place the twelve apples on the table spread out. Place one basket (or container) at the foot of each team s starting/finishing point. This is a relay race. When you say go, the music begins, and one boy and girl run to the table. With their hands behind their backs, they have to grab an apple with their teeth and run back to the finish line and drop it into the basket/container. Then, the next person in line goes and so on and so on. The first team to have all the participants complete the task is the winner. Lesson One - Satan s Plan For Your Life Page 10

Illustrated Message Satan s Plan For Your Life! Materials Needed: The Data CD; a fake tree; an apple Preparation: Open the PowerPoint presentation on the Data CD titled Lesson One, begin with the slide titled Satan s Plan For Your Life. There is a slide for each point in the message. The Message: (title slide) Today, I am going to tell you a story that you may have heard before. Over the next few times we get together, we are going to look at the same story through the eyes of the different characters in the story. This story takes place at the very beginning of time. There was no earth, no moon, no sun. Everything was dark and empty. Then, God said, Let there be light. And, there was light. Then, God spoke and created the earth, the trees, the animals, the sun, the moon, and the stars. He looked at it and said, Everything is very good! But, there was something missing...humans. God took the dust of the earth and formed the first man. He breathed life into him and named him Adam. Then, he took a rib from his side and created the first woman and she was named Eve. Adam and Eve had a wonderful life. They had everything they needed. All the food they needed. They had no problems, no worries, and no school. That means no tests, no studying, and no MATH! How many of you think that is a WONDERFUL life! God gave them only ONE rule. (walk over to the fake tree you have set up) He said, You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die. Well, that s pretty easy. Just one rule. (hold up the fruit off the tree) Just don t eat of the fruit of one tree. That s it! Just one rule! How many of you think that would be a great life? (allow kids to respond) Adam and Eve were happy in their new life, but there was one person who was not so happy. His name is Satan. Satan had been watching Adam and Eve in their happy-go-lucky life walking with God and living it up in the garden. He had devised a plan that would ruin their lives forever. One day, while Adam and Eve were walking in the garden, Satan took on the form of a serpent and came up to them. And that s the first lesson I want you to learn today: (CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE) Lesson One - Satan s Plan For Your Life Page 11

Illustrated Message (Continued) 1. Satan Comes In Disguise (slide) Satan didn t come to Adam and Eve and say, Good morning, I m the guy who led a rebellion against God and got kicked out of heaven. Are you hungry? I bet this apple is good. No instead, he comes as a snake. See, we read this story and we already know the bad guy is the snake because we have heard the story before. But, at this point in time, Adam and Eve didn t recognize the snake as anything other than just another of the animals. You see, kids, Satan doesn t announce who he is or what he is planning. That s not the way temptation works. Think about it if he announced his plans up front, no one would follow his plan, no one would be interested in the temptation. Can you imagine if Satan were honest? Hey good morning. My name is Satan and I want to introduce you to drugs. They will kill your brain cells. They will destroy your life, your relationships and your future. You will be addicted. Your addiction will cause you to do terrible things you never dreamed of doing. You will get to go to prison. Your body will be destroyed. You will be hopeless and alone. All brought to you by me, Satan. We laugh because it s ridiculous. Who would fall for that? Only an idiot. That s why Satan comes in disguise pretending to offer you hope, love, and happiness. Why do you buy into the lies? Because you don t recognize Satan for who he is. There is no flashing neon sign that says Watch out Satan Sin. Satan comes in disguise. There s something else the Bible tells us about Satan in this story. It s found in Genesis 3:1, Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. The word crafty means that he was good at what he does and will find ways to get it done no matter what. You see kids Satan Is Smart (slide) Satan is not stupid. Part of what makes the devil the best liar who ever lived is that he is extremely smart. He knows how to trick us. He knows our strengths and weaknesses and the things we like when it comes to sin. After doing these things for thousands of years, he is very good at tricking us and trapping us into sin. That s why Satan doesn t announce who he is. Don t ever think our enemy, the devil, is weak and dumb. Satan knows that what he is trying to get you to do will hurt you. Satan is smart. He wants you to believe it is for your good, not for your destruction. So, he says to Eve, Hey, Eve. You know that one tree that God told you not to eat from? You (CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE) Lesson One - Satan s Plan For Your Life Page 12

Illustrated Message (Continued) really ought to check that out. It tastes really good. But, Eve says to him, But, God said that if we eat of it we will surely die. Satan lies to Eve, You will not surely die. God only said that because He knows that if you eat of this tree you will become just like God. That s not what God said is it kids? (allow kids to respond) Satan is lying to Eve. He is deceiving her. And that s the third lesson you need to learn about Satan today Satan Deceives (slide) Satan is a liar. He wants you to doubt God and then decide that God s word cannot be trusted that God s word is not true. He tells you: Oh, I know God said that you shouldn t steal. But, God didn t mean that. He just meant that unless you really need it you shouldn t steal. It s no big deal to take just a small piece of gum. That s not really stealing. OR I know the Bible says we should honor our Father and Mother, but not when they are wrong. They may have told you not to go to that movie, but they just don t know how fun it is going to be. Go ahead, it s OK. OR It s true that God said you shouldn t lie, but He didn t mean it. It s OK to lie when you are trying to get yourself out of trouble. All of these are lies that the devil tells us just like he told Eve. Sadly, many of us react the same way Eve did. She ATE the fruit. She disobeyed God. She followed Satan s plan for her life instead of God s. How sad. Kids, if we are going to be able to stand up for God and not fall into Satan s plan for our lives, then we are going to have to recognize that Satan comes in disguise, Satan is smart, and Satan deceives. He wants us to fall into his trap. But, with God s help, we can avoid the trap of temptation and not give in. ALTAR TIME: (play soft music) Ask the children if they have been struggling with temptation in their lives. Have them come forward and pray for God to help them recognize when Satan is lying to them and trying to trap them. Pray that God will enable them to always be on guard and watching so that they do not fall into the devil s trap. Lesson One - Satan s Plan For Your Life Page 13

Offering Time Praise Songs Game Time Higher or lower? Adam gave in to temptation, just as Eve did. He knew better, but he did it anyway. As a result, he paid the price for it. He was separated from God, thrown out of the garden, and forced to work a life of blood, sweat, and tears. So often, we think that we can just go ahead and sin and it won t matter. After all, it s just one sin. Can that really be that big of a deal? The truth is, all it takes is ONE sin for us to have to pay the ultimate price of separation from God forever. It was true for Adam and it is true for us. In this lesson, we will look at the HIGH price of giving in to temptation. It s a price we NEVER want to have to pay. 20 Puppet Skit Character: Mr. Crabbe is an old man puppet that suffers from a bad attitude. Leader: Today we are going to be talking about The World s Most Expensive Apple. (Mr. Crabbe pops up) Mr. Crabbe: What are you talking about? How much could an apple cost? Twenty cents tops! Leader: Hi, Mr. Crabbe. No, we are talking about how high a price it was for Adam to disobey God in the Garden of Eden. Mr. Crabbe: Garden? Speaking of garden, that reminds me of a joke. If April showers bring May flowers, then what do Mayflowers bring? Leader: I don t know. What do Mayflowers bring? Mr. Crabbe: Pilgrims! Silly, don t you read your history books? Leader: That s great, Mr. Crabbe. Mr. Crabbe: Yeah, I will tell you what s great! It s what I did to old man Peterson the other day! Leader: Wait. What did you do to Mr. Peterson? Mr. Crabbe: I pulled a good one on him. I stole all of his carrots. Leader: You what? Mr. Crabbe: I stole all his carrots. I pulled em all up by the root and fed them to the stray dogs. Isn t that hilarious? Leader: No, it s not. That s stealing! Mr. Crabbe: Well, I guess you could call it that. I call it just playing a joke. Leader: But, stealing is stealing. It s a sin. Don t you realize there is a high price for sin. The Bible says that The wages of sin is death. Is that the price you want to pay for stealing? Mr. Crabbe: Well, that s what the Bible says when it s talking about BIG sins, not just one little bitty sin like stealing your neighbor s carrots. Besides, now that the stray dogs ate them carrots they have 20/20 vision. Leader: Mr. Crabbe! That doesn t matter at all. A sin is a sin. It only takes one sin, and we deserve death in hell forever. 21 Puppet Skit (CONTINUED) Mr. Crabbe: Are you serious? Leader: Yes, I am serious. Mr. Crabbe: But, I thought it wouldn t be a big deal to steal if I was doing it for a joke. Leader: Stealing is stealing. No matter what your purpose for doing it. It s a sin that costs a high price. Mr. Crabbe: Boy, I ll say. I don t want to pay that price. What do I do? What do I do? Leader: You have to ask Jesus to forgive you and make things right. Mr. Crabbe: Well, I am definitely going to do that. I don t want to pay that high price of death. That s scary! Leader: I know. That s why Jesus paid the price for us on the cross. He died so we could receive forgiveness from Him and not have to pay the high price of sin. Mr. Crabbe: Boy, I sure am glad for that. Hey, I have a question. Leader: What s that? Mr. Crabbe: Does this mean I probably shouldn t do my other joke? Leader: What joke is that? Mr. Crabbe: I was gonna put super glue on his toilet seat! Leader: Mr. Crabbe! That s mean! Mr. Crabbe: I know, I know! I m not going to do it now! Leader: Good, Mr. Crabbe. See you later! Lesson Two - The World s Most Expensive Apple Page 18

Game Time Higher Or Lower? Items Needed For Game: Several every day items that vary in price range. How To Play: Choose one boy and one girl to play this game. The audience will be able to help them. In classic Price Is Right form, show each item one at a time. Give details about the item including a suggested price. The player must decide whether the actual retail price of the item is HIGHER or LOWER than the price you suggested. The audience can help them decide by yelling Higher or Lower while they think about it. Once they decide, be sure it is their FINAL answer. If they guess it right, they get a point. Once each player has had a chance to guess an even amount of items, the player with the most points wins. Lesson Two - The World s Most Expensive Apple Page 19

Illustrated Message The World s Most Expensive Apple Materials Needed: The Data CD; an apple Preparation: Open the PowerPoint presentation on the Data CD titled Lesson Two, begin with the slide titled The World s Most Expensive Apple. There is a slide for each point in the message. The Message: (title slide) Have you ever been shopping with your Mom or your Dad? Don t you hate it when you see a toy you REALLY want and you ask your parents to buy it for you. They look at the price tag and say the four words every kid hates to hear: THAT COSTS TOO MUCH! What a bummer, huh? You really wanted it, but the price was too high. Well, today we are going to take a trip back to the Garden of Eden and jump back into our story about the first sin. Adam finds out that the price for giving in to temptation is a HIGH PRICE indeed. You remember from last time that God created Adam and Eve and put them in the Garden. Life was perfect. They had everything they needed. All the food they needed, no work, no problems. He gave them only ONE rule. Don t eat of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. God gave Adam clear instructions and told him that if he disobeyed there would be a high price to pay. Just like Adam, we also have clear instructions from God on how to live for Him. The Bible tells us clearly what we are to do and not to do. Just like Adam, we have to learn that disobeying God comes with a price. Let s look at the story today to see the price that Adam had to pay. Adam and Eve are walking in the garden one day and Satan comes to them in the form of a serpent and tells them, Hey, it s OK if you eat of the fruit of this tree. I know God said you would surely die, but that s not true. Eve ate of the fruit, then offered some to Adam. Adam knew that God had told him not to, but he did it anyway. He disobeyed God. 1. When I Give In To Temptation: I Disobey God! (slide) When we give in to temptation and do something God has told us not to...it s not just making a mistake. It is disobeying God. Too often, we want to pretend it is no big deal. It s just a simple mistake. The truth is...it is disobedience. We have CHOSEN to go against what God has told us not to do. We do it, and Adam did too. (CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE) Lesson Two - The World s Most Expensive Apple Page 20

Illustrated Message (CONTINUED) That s not all that happened. The Bible says, that after they ate of the fruit, they ran and hid from God because they were ashamed. 2. I Feel Guilt And Shame! (slide) Have you ever done something wrong and then felt the guilt and shame that comes afterward. You know you have done wrong. You know you have let God down. You feel so guilty. It hurts. It drives you crazy. Adam ran from God and hid in the garden because he was feeling so guilty. Often, we also choose to run from God because of our guilt. Instead of running FROM God, we should run TO God and ask forgiveness. But, that s not what Adam did. The high price of giving in to temptation didn t stop there. God told him that because he chose to sin that he and every other man to follow would have to work for his food from now on. Then, God turned to Eve and told her that from that day on she and every other woman would have pain during childbirth. So, you see, not only did Adam s decision hurt him, but it also hurt others. 3. I Hurt Others! (slide) When you and I give in to temptation, we also hurt others. We lose our temper and we hurt others with our words. We steal from someone and we hurt them. When we lie to our parents, we hurt them. We can never think that our sin only affects us. That s not true. When we choose to give in to temptation, we hurt others as well. What else happened to Adam? The Bible says that he and Eve were thrown out of the garden of Eden. No longer did they have all of the food they needed. No longer did they have a life of blessing without problems or pain. 4. I Lose God s Blessings! (slide) You see, boys and girls, God can t bless a life of disobedience. When we choose to disobey God and give in to temptation, we choose to give up God s blessings. We never thought about it that way, but just like Adam and Eve we lose God s blessings when we choose to sin. The final price Adam and Eve had to pay was the biggest one. God set them outside the garden where they used to walk with God and spend time with Him every day. God set an angel with a (CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE) Lesson Two - The World s Most Expensive Apple Page 21

Illustrated Message (CONTINUED) flaming sword outside the entrance to the garden so they could never return. They were separated from God and His presence. 5. I Am Separated From God! (slide) When we move ourselves away from God s plan in our lives we move ourselves away from God. Disobedience is separation. It s the cost of what we do when we sin. It isn t God who separates himself from us. It is us who choose to be separated from God. When we choose to live in disobedience, when we choose to sin we are separated from God. That is the price of sin. When we choose to give in to temptation, we disobey God, we feel guilt and shame, we hurt others, we lose God s blessings, and we are separated from God. I don t know about you, but I think our Big Idea for today is right: SIN COSTS A HIGH PRICE! But, you don t have to pay that price if you choose to obey God. You don t have to pay that price if you choose to follow His plan for your life. That s what God wants us to do. Obey Him, receive His blessings, and live with Him forever. ALTAR TIME: (play soft music) Pray with the children who feel that they have been paying the high price of giving in to temptation. Pray that God will help them realize the price of sin and work to never give in to temptation. Lesson Two - The World s Most Expensive Apple Page 22

Learn from Eve s mistakes how to deal with temptation! Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. - Matthew 26:41 I May Be Tempted, But I Won t Give In! Intro Video How To Handle Temptation Puppet Skit Put On Your Sneakers and RUN! Offering Time Praise Songs Game Time Run From Temptation! Eve made a huge mistake, but it wasn t just an isolated incident. There were several mistakes she made that added up to the ultimate mistake of the original sin. As we dive into the story once again, we take things from Eve s perspective and see the progression she went through and the steps she could have avoided. We are all tempted, but we don t have to give in to that temptation. The only way we can handle the pressure is to recognize that rarely is sin an act of the moment. More often than not it is a series of events that lead up to the ultimate act of giving in to temptation and sin. In this lesson, we learn these crucial steps. 29 Puppet Skit Character: Silly Willy is a hyperactive puppet that thrives on scaring the leaders/workers. (You can use any puppet your kids are familiar with in your services.) Leader: I can t wait to find out how you and I can learn to handle temptation today... (Silly Willy makes some noise over by the puppet stage. When the leader goes to check it out, Silly Willy jumps up and scares them.) Leader: Silly Willy! You scared me! Why do you want to do that? Silly Willy: I couldn t help it! Leader: What do you mean you couldn t help it. Silly Willy: It was just too tempting! I love to hear you scream like a little girl! Leader: Well, it s not funny to me. But, anyway, what brings you here this morning? Silly Willy: I heard you guys out here talking about how you can handle temptation. Leader: That s right. We are going to be learning from our Bible story about how Eve made a bunch of mistakes that led to her giving in to temptation. We re going to learn how to avoid falling into that trap. Silly Willy: You re wasting your time. Leader: What are you talking about? How are we wasting our time? Silly Willy: It s impossible to avoid temptation. It s just too tempting to give in to sin. Leader: Well, that s true, it is tempting to give in. But, you and I don t have to give in. Silly Willy: What about the other day when I was in class. My friend dared me to put a thumbtack in the seat of one of the new kids in class. It was so tempting to do it...so I gave in. Leader: Silly Willy, you didn t! Silly Willy: I did. That little dude shot about six feet in the air when that tack hit his bohunkus! Leader: Now, Silly Willy, that is mean. You shouldn t have done that. 30 Puppet Skit (continued) Silly Willy: I know, but I couldn t help it! It was too tempting. Leader: Well, Silly Willy. I understand that temptation can be very strong. And, it can be hard for us to NOT give in. But, that s why God tells us that we should watch and pray so that we don t give in. Silly Willy: Watch and pray? Leader: Exactly. You watch out for the traps, then you pray that God will give you the strength to say NO! and then run from temptation. Silly Willy: Oops. I don t think I was watching and praying when I put that thumbtack in that kid s chair. Leader: I don t think you were either. Silly Willy: Maybe I should pay attention today and learn how to handle temptation just like you guys are. Leader: Good decision! We ll see you later, Silly Willy! Silly Willy: See you later everyone! Bye! Lesson Three - How To Handle Temptation Page 27

Game Time Run From Temptation! Items Needed For Game: A baton for each team to be used in this relay game. Setup: Before you begin, say the following: In our lesson today, we are going to learn how to handle temptation. One of the best ways we can do that is to RUN from it the moment we spot it. Our game today is going to get us in shape for running from temptation. How To Play: Choose five boys and five girls (or any number you wish) to play this game. Have them line up single file at the starting line. Place the baton in the hand of each person at the front of the line. When you say Go, one player from each team runs to the opposite side of the room and back, then hands the baton to the next player who does the same thing. The first team to have all of their players back in line and seated WINS THE GAME! Lesson Three - How To Handle Temptation Page 28

Illustrated Message How To Handle Temptation Materials Needed: The Data CD; a pair of sneakers Preparation: Open the PowerPoint presentation on the Data CD titled Lesson Three, begin with the slide titled How To Handle Temptation. There is a slide for each point in the message. The Message: (title slide) Wouldn t it be cool if there was a special computer program you could buy that would keep you from giving in to temptation? We could call it The Temptation Blocker. That would make it easy, right? You know, you re sitting in school taking a test and the teacher walks out of the room for a second. You get the thought to look on your neighbor s paper, but the program turns on and shuts down your neck muscles so you can t look sideways at your neighbor s paper. Whew! Temptation blocked! Or, you are asked by your Mom whether or not you were the one who broke her favorite glass vase. You know you did it, but to try to keep out of trouble you are tempted to lie. Suddenly the Temptation Blocker turns on and freezes your tongue so you can t talk. No talking, no lying. Whew! Temptation avoided! Although that would be great if such a device existed, I am afraid it does not. It s up to us to learn how to handle our own temptations. We learned last time about Adam and the HIGH price that sin carries. Today, we are going to learn about Eve and how we can learn from her mistakes and learn to handle temptation when it comes our way. Let s check it out: God created Adam and Eve and put them in the Garden of Eden. Life was perfect. They had everything they needed. All the food they needed, no work, no problems. He gave them only ONE rule. Don t eat of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. God gave Adam and Eve clear instructions and told them NOT to give in to temptation.. You remember what happened, don t you. Adam and Eve are walking in the garden one day and Satan comes to them in the form of a serpent and talks to Eve, Hey, it s OK if you eat of the fruit of this tree. I know God said you would surely die, but that s not true. He knows that if you eat this fruit you will become just like Him. Satan lies to Eve and tells her she can t trust God. Satan lies to Eve and tells her that God wasn t telling her the truth, that He just didn t want them to become like Him. That s the first mistake (CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE) Lesson Three - How To Handle Temptation Page 29

Illustrated Message (CONTINUED) Eve makes, and it s the first lesson we can learn on how to handle temptation: 1. Don t Listen To Satan s Lies, Trust God s Plan (slide) Satan lies to us all the time just like he lied to Eve. He may not come to us directly with his lies. Many times he uses television, movies, and even friends to lie to us. He tells us that we won t really get in trouble. He lies and says that one sin won t really matter. He lies and says that Everybody s doing it, so it s OK. We have to not listen to Satan s lies because they are not true. God loves us and has a plan for our lives. If we trust Him, we will listen to His words in the Bible and obey Him, not listen to Satan s lies. Instead, Eve listened to the lies. You know, once she heard the lie the story should have ended right there. The story should have read like this: You will not surely die, the serpent said to the woman. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil. And so, Eve looked at the snake and said, See ya and took off running. Eve ran as far and as fast as she could and from then on, whenever Eve saw the snake, she ran. And they lived happily ever after in the Garden of Eden. But, that s not what happened, is it? Nope. Eve didn t run from temptation, she hung around. Here is the lesson we learn: 2. Don t Hang Around - RUN From Temptation! (slide) Kids, do you see these? (hold up the pair of sneakers) These can be your best weapons in fighting temptation. When the devil starts lying to you, don t hang around. Strap your shoes on and RUN! Run as far and as fast as you can. It s hard to give in to temptation when you are running in the other direction. But, Eve did hang around. Worst of all, she ended up eating the fruit that God told her not to. Then, she turns to Adam and offers him some. Here s where we can learn a lesson from Adam. He sees Eve giving in to temptation. He should have spoken up and told her, DON T DO IT! YOU LL RUIN YOUR LIFE! RUN! Instead, what does he do? He takes the fruit and eats some, too. The lesson we can learn is: (CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE) Lesson Three - How To Handle Temptation Page 30

Illustrated Message (CONTINUED) 3. Don t Follow The Crowd - Do What s Right! (slide) Kids, let me tell you something. When everyone else around you is choosing to do wrong, you do what s right! If everyone around you is going the wrong direction, you do what s right! Set the example! Follow God s plan! Speak up! Don t let them believe Satan s lies. Don t follow the crowd! Do what s right! It s so sad what happened to Eve. And to think that she didn t have to give in. She could ve handled temptation the way we talked about today: 1. Don t Listen To Satan s Lies Trust God s Plan 2. Don t Hang Around RUN From Temptation 3. Don t Follow The Crowd Do What s Right That s the plan that you can follow, kids. If you want to handle temptation and not give in, just follow those three simple steps. ALTAR TIME: (soft music playing) Now, that you have laid out the steps to avoid giving in to temptation, recognize that many of the children in your group have given in to temptation even this week. Allow them to confess their sin to God. Then, pray with them that God will help them follow the three steps in the plan to handle temptation. Lesson Three - How To Handle Temptation Page 31

Does He plot revenge? Does He say, I told you so? So many people (adults and children) have the idea in their mind that God is sitting in Heaven with one hand on the zapper and one foot raised in the air just waiting to STOMP on us when we sin. Through the story of Adam and Eve, we see God s heart and how He really responds when we fail Him. When we run from Him, He comes looking for us and gives us a chance to make it right. (Mr. Crabbe pops up) Mr. Crabbe: Oh no! What am I gonna do? What am I gonna do? Leader: Well, hey there, Mr. Crabbe. What are you going to do about what? Mr. Crabbe: He s gonna kill me! He s gonna kill me! Leader: Wait a second! Who? Who s going to kill you? Mr. Crabbe: You know exactly who! I have so messed up, now! Leader: Mr. Crabbe, I have to be honest. I have no idea what you are talking about. Mr. Crabbe: Well, you remember how I told you that I stole Old Man Peterson s carrots, right? Leader: I remember. Mr. Crabbe: Well, today he asked me if I had anything to do with it. Leader: Ok, and... Mr. Crabbe: I told him I didn t know anything about it. Leader: Mr. Crabbe, that is lying. Mr. Crabbe: I know it is! (starts to really freak out) And He s GONNA KILL ME!!!!! Leader: Now, Mr. Crabbe. I know that Mr. Peterson is probably going to be upset for you stealing his carrots and lying to him, but I am sure he is not going to kill you. Mr Crabbe: It s not Mr. Peterson that I am worried about killing me, you crazy nincompoop! Leader: Well, then who are you worried about? He s gonna string me up by my toenails and electrocute me with a cattle prod! Leader: Mr. Crabbe, whatever gave you that idea? Mr. Crabbe: Well, I learned before that the wages of sin is death. I sinned, so now I am going to die! God s gonna kill me! Leader: Mr. Crabbe, God s not going to kill you. You know, it is true that the wages of sin is death, but did you know the rest of that verse says, But the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord? Mr. Crabbe: Eternal life? I don t get it. Leader: You see, Mr. Crabbe. God hates sin. It hurts Him so much when we sin. But, He doesn t get mad at us and want to kill us. Instead, He gives us a chance to ask forgiveness in the name of Jesus Christ, His Son. When God forgives us, we no longer deserve death as a payment for our sin. We receive eternal life in Heaven from Jesus! Mr. Crabbe: Well, why didn t you say so in the first place? That s awesome! I don t have to be scared of God. He loves me and wants to forgive me. Leader: He sure does. So, don t ever think that God is out to get you. Mr. Crabbe: I won t. That was pretty silly of me, huh? Leader: Sure was. But, you know Mr. Crabbe, after you ask God for forgiveness, you really ought to go tell Mr. Peterson the truth. Mr. Crabbe: Oh, I will. I promise. I don t want to sin anymore! Leader: Sounds great! See you later, Mr. Crabbe! Mr. Crabbe: Bye! Bye! Lesson Four - God s Response To Failure Page 36

Game Time Hide and seek Items Needed For Game: Twelve prize envelopes sealed and filled with pieces of paper with various point amounts written on them. Setup: Before you begin, say the following: Kids, in our lesson today, we are learning how God doesn t let us just run away from Him. When we are ashamed of our failure and run and hide from Him, He always comes looking for us to give us a chance to make it right. Our game today is going to have us looking for some things that are hiding. Before the game (preferably while no one was looking), hide the envelopes in various places all over the room (taped under chairs, behind doors, in plants, etc.). How To Play: Choose three boys and three girls (or any number you wish) to play this game. When you say, Go, all the players will run around the room frantically looking for the hidden envelopes. Explain to them there are only twelve envelopes, but that all of them have different point amounts in them. They ARE NOT ALLOWED to open their envelopes until the game is over. Choose one of the 60 second timed game music songs on the Fruit of Failure Music CD. Tell the children they have ONE minute to find as many envelopes as possible. Once the music is over (or all envelopes have been found) invite the kids to bring their envelopes up to the front. One at a time, open the envelopes and total the number of points each team has earned. The team with the most points wins! Lesson Four - God s Response To Failure Page 37

Illustrated Message God s Response To Failure Materials Needed: The Data CD; a large magnifying glass Preparation: Open the PowerPoint presentation on the Data CD titled Lesson Four, begin with the slide titled God s Response To Failure. There is a slide for each point in the message. The Message: (title slide) Over the last few weeks, we have been looking at the story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. They made some HUGE mistakes, disobeyed God, and ended up committing the very first sin. In case you forgot, let me remind you of the story: God created Adam and Eve and put them in the Garden of Eden. Life was perfect. They had everything they needed. All the food they needed, no work, no problems. He gave them only ONE rule. Don t eat of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. God gave Adam and Eve clear instructions and told them NOT to give in to temptation. Adam and Eve are walking in the garden one day and Satan comes to them in the form of a snake and lies to Eve, Hey, it s OK if you eat of the fruit of this tree. I know God said you would surely die, but that s not true. Eve eats the fruit. Then, Adam eats the fruit. They have both just disobeyed God and committed the first sin. Today, we are going to look at the rest of this story from God s perspective. How do you think He felt when Adam and Eve sinned? What is he going to do to them? Have any of you ever seen the movie, The Ant Bully? (put the slide on the screen) It s the story of a boy who is so mean to ants. He drowns them, he burns them with a magnifying glass much like this one. (hold up the magnifying glass) You want to know something sad? Many people have this idea that God is a lot like The Ant Bully. They see Him sitting up in Heaven looking down with this mean look just waiting for us to mess up. And, when we do, He just lifts His foot and STOMPS on us. But, as you are going to see in our story, God is not like that. Let s finish the story picking up in Genesis chapter 3 verse 9: But the Lord God called to the man, Where are you? To me, this is the most amazing part of the story. Adam and Eve had failed. They disobeyed the only rule God had given. But, God doesn t stay up in heaven and ignore them. Instead, God comes down to the Garden, looking for them. How does God respond to failure?... (CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE) Lesson Four - God s Response To Failure Page 38

Illustrated Message (CONTINUED) 1. He Comes To Me (slide) That s how much God loves you. Even though you have failed, God doesn t see you as a failure. He loves you. He wants to be in relationship with you. So, He comes looking for you. It s not that God doesn t know where to find you, it s that He wants you to see that He is coming to get you back. He doesn t want you to stay away. A few verses later, God asked Adam a question. Genesis 3:13 says, Then the Lord God said...what is this you have done? Does God really not know what they did? Of course He does. By asking them what they have done He is giving them a chance to confess their sin. 2. He Gives Me A Chance To Make It Right (slide) That s what our Power Verse teaches us today. But, if we confess our sins to Him, He is faithful...to forgive us That s really pretty amazing. God says, I know you failed. Now, if you ll just confess your sin. If you will tell me about that failure, I m ready to forgive you and cleanse you from that sin. What else does God do? He gets mad at Adam and Eve, right? Well, He does get mad. But, not at who you would think. Listen to what the Bible says happened next in Genesis 3:14. So the Lord God said to the serpent, Because you have done this, cursed are you WOW! Instead of getting mad at us He Gets Mad At Satan (slide) Isn t that awesome? Satan is cursed for what he did to Adam and Eve and for what he does to you and me. When we sin, God isn t mad at us. He is mad at the devil. The devil is a liar and is always trying to trick us. So, God gets mad and curses Satan. Wow! We are getting off pretty good right about now, huh? God isn t mad at us, he comes looking for us, gives us a chance to make it right...everything is perfect, huh? Not so fast. Even though God loves us, He still knows that we must learn a lesson from our mistake. (CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE) Lesson Four - God s Response To Failure Page 39

Illustrated Message (CONTINUED) 4. He Allows Me To Suffer The Consequences Of My Sin (slide) In Genesis 3:23 the Bible says, Then, the Lord God banished him from the Garden You see, even though God loves us and isn t mad at us, He knows that we will never learn our lesson if we don t suffer the consequences of our sin. That s why your parents may forgive you for lying to them, but they still ground you from video games for a week. It s not that they are mad at you. They love you and want you to learn your lesson so that you never make that same mistake again. That s what God did to Adam and Eve. That s what He does for us. He allows us to suffer the consequences of our sin and learn from our mistakes. And, so that is ALMOST the end of our story. You say, Well, I thought that was the end. God kicks them out of the Garden forever. Isn t that the end? Not quite. The story really doesn t end for another 2,000 years or so. What s God s final response to failure? 5. He Makes It Right! (slide) You see, boys and girls, because of that one sin Adam and Eve, you and I, and everyone who has ever lived and has sinned deserved death in Hell forever. But, God didn t want that. So, He sent His Son, Jesus, to die on a cross for us so that we could be forgiven of our sins. Sin costs a high price, but Jesus paid that price for us. That s how we can be forgiven. Romans 6:23 says, The wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Through Jesus sacrifice, God made it right for us to be forgiven forever! ALTAR TIME: (soft music playing) End the service with a time of confession, giving children a chance to make it right with God. Don t forget that there may possibly be children in your service that have never accepted Christ. Make a clear presentation of the Gospel and lead them in the sinner s prayer.
